New Series and Neo Sci-Fi Electro

I’m totally excited about this new series. And I’m going to have to discuss some issues I’ve already covered. Just for the sake of the series.

And yall know I can’t do this alone so I’m going to need reader submissions, pictures and suggestions.

Check this out.

How are yall diggin’ my funky border? I kinda like it. The purpose of this series to dispel the many myths and stereotypes that have haunted Black women for centuries. Colors we can’t wear, products we shouldn’t touch….it’s getting old. It’s time we start reclaiming our identities and defining our own beauties. Who’s with me?!!

Oh…got a bit excited.

First series post..

But Black Women Can’t…..wear orange lipstick.

As my boy Martin Lawrence would say, “Somebody dun told you wrong.”

I promised myself that I would re-visit Electro from the Neo Sci-Fi collection. I tried it on in the store and wanted to scream. My BFF make-up artist swore up and down that I looked beautiful and I know he wouldn’t lie but I wasn’t convinced. Still, I took that and Pink Grapefruit lip glass home to play around with in my own lighting.

(Is it me or does MAC’s lighting make you feel like a superstar and then you get home to your own bathroom and feel like an Ugly Betty. What kind of bulbs do they have?)

I’m going to keep it real with yall, so get ready for some laughs. I know I was doubled over in tears when I saw this.

Electro with 3 coats.

And I ain’t showin’ yall the full face because it’s awful!

I’m thinkin’ we as Black women (well us darker Black women) CAN wear this orange lipstick. But sheer. Check it with one coat.

See, not as scary.

And when topped off with Pink Grapefruit Lipglass….well, it’s just perfect for summer.

What do you think about us rockin’ orange lipstick? Send all of your suggestions for the But Black Women Can’t series to me at Wanna do a collaborative post? You know I’m down! And as always….send me your pics of you defying those myths!

Happy Friday!!!!

    I think it looks fabolous on you! And girl lemme tell you, I’m an EXTREMELY light skinned black girl, with dark hair and eyes and i feel like I cannot where everything too. Eyeshadow, any color, but sometimes I feel the only lip color I can pull off is sheer pink or clear. Orange? I’d look crazy! But I’mma try cause you said so =}

  • Sass

damn you! now i have to go back and get electro…at least i already pink grapefruit

  • LBIC

I’m not black but I am a woman of color and I know what you mean. It’s such bs that people of any color can’t wear a specific color or use a product. Every person is different and they have to find the shade that fits them best. And that color looks perfect on you.

    Happy friday!

I think the picture of your lips with 3 coats of electro looks good. I love orange I think we can wear it. I’m NW43 old school and I wear orange lipstick from time to time. I have a friend that only wears orange lipstick and i would say shes about NW43 or NW45 the only thing though she wears it with a black liner and thats a no no.(lol)

  • MoxieSauce

I have been a lurker (and a fan) of yours for quite some time. I just *had* to come out of hiding for this one! I am so super duper excited about the new series! I stopped listening to the nay sayers a long time ago. If were left up to typical beliefs, we would be stuck with brown lips and gold shadow. Can a sista get some teal!?!?!

You are looking quite fab in the orange lippie. I like the 3 coats. Work it out then Miss. B!

  • ShanSoPink

    I LOVE this series!!!
I &heart;x10 you for buying Electro! It looks great, I am on a personal mission to get every mac girl I know to buy Electro it’s my new fave!!!

  • PBW

Have to admit I have the Pink Grapefruit lipglass, but passed on Electro.

It looks great on you. So does the red from the Naughty Nauticals collection.

Headed to the mall today…will take another look at Electro.

  • Danyelle

I think the three coats pick looks good on your lips. I wish we could see how it looks with your whole face in the pic….. Still the one coat is very pretty, glossy sun-kissed lips! Love it! I’m off to buy me some pink grapefruit :)

Is blue eyeshadow one of those Black Women Can’t things??? If so, I love my crayola-blue smokey eye and can send you pics… Lemme know

  • Twinkle Twinkle

It’s not just you. MAC lighting makes me look like a monster. It highlights imperfections that I didn’t even know I had.

  • Virtuous Blue

OMG why didn’t we think of this series…its brilliant. I’m gonna go home and really brainstorm a list cause there’s so much that people think is off limits for black women. Def. count Kenya and I in for submissions. Speaking of…I’m not gonna let the weekend end without sending you the blush pictures…And (I know this is a long comment) I bought Electro and was so mad when I got home but I’m determined to make it work. Great post, great series, great everything.

  • Felicity

  • yummy411

also i got one up on you already! i’ve been dying to do pastels on a darker skinned women for a minute, just to prove to YOU my sweets that darker skinned women really can wear those colors!!! when mac’s danse came out, the artists were beating faces i tell you! my area is predominantly black and that’s all they were doing.. the danse collection on darker tones!

i will post… one of these days soon lol!

  • nywele

beautiful!! Electro looks great on you and I should have ordered it online. I just went there and it is sold out!! So now i have to go to Indy for that..

  • Divine Blackness

I’m glad yall are diggin’ the series so far! Yay!!!

Okay okay, I promise I’ll post another picture of Electro-full face. *sigh* Yall ain’t got to cyber-bully me. :) LOL!

We ALL need to get up on the orange lipstick this summer. Everyone needs to buy it!

  • Afrodite

Funny that you say that because the Slimshine I bought in Assertive has kind of a sheer coral color and I love it. I just can’t do the bold orange color.

  • ohsoshy

    That it is HAWT

  • SuzieC

I like the 3 coats of Electro. Puts that on my ever growing list of things to get.

    Love the series!

  • Toya

I think it looks wonderful on you, Mama!!! Black women look fabulous in saturated, juicy colors!

  • YoungBlackBeauty

I love the Electro with 3 coats and with Pink Grapefruit. I don’t know if I can pull it off comfortably, I don’t even like pinks on me.

  • Fashion’s Darling

LOVVEEE IT!!!! I love this series! Kudos! Love the orange lip. I been so darn scared of [any] color. I just got into wearing a really bright pink (Wet n Wild in 111B)

I do hate when mags give advice on using color but for darker skin women they ALWAYS say blue or purple…what happened to the other colors?!?! ***sry…got a bit emotional there***

ummm, I’ve heard black women need to stay away from blush (I never listened to that…i luv my blush)

  • Tonyette

Hi! I found out about your blog through your interview with Toya and the lovely LOAL blog!! I must say, I’d NEVER have thought I could wear orange lipstick…but looking at it on you, definitely doable for me, too! Thanks, hon! I’ll be visiting your site from now on! ;0)

  • Divine Blackness

Afro–> Hush, you can. And just for that I hope you win the Electro so I can cyber-bully you to do a FOTD for us. LOL!

Krys–> See the msg to Afro. Same applies to you. Only I’d bully you in real life. Heheeee.

FD–> I know, right? Someone feels me!! Girl, I’m all over color. And you know how I feel about blush. My BFF!

Tonyette–> Thanks so much for strollin’ through. Rock the orange lippie, sista!

  • LisaMK

I really like this color on your lips, it suits you very well. At the moment I'm "into orange lipstick" and I think it's fabulous! (first I was into bright pink lipgloss, but after three bottles I quit..)
