Brown Beauties and Sun Protection

This post may be little delayed being that summer is more than halfway over with but better late than never, right? I hope by now you all know the importance of taking care of our skin, but even more so during those hot summer months.

In Florida we have two types of seasons: hot and hotter. I don’t remember putting on a ton a sunscreen growing up as a child; probably because of the idea that “Black folx don’t need sun protection because we are already dark” myth. Oh yes, it sounds funny but I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been to the beach with my girlfriends and they’ve packed everything in their beach bags EXCEPT sunscreen.

So let’s make this clear:

Everyone needs to wear sunscreen

The sun does NOT discriminate so it is important that we all take care of our skin year round but especially when the sun is blazing.

Since becoming a beauty editor, I have become a bit more cognizant in sun protection on my face as well as my body. Para mi cara, I use the following:

Olay Complete SPF 15

This has been my HG moisturizer for some months now. I doubt I will ever switch to anything else. It is wonderfully moisturizing for my relatively dry skin and isn’t so thick to where I feel like it is clogging my pores. When I break a sweat from working out, it doesn’t leave any residue. For less than $10, I can’t ask for anything more in a moisturizer. I tend to use this every day and even at night sometimes.

Clinique Superdefense Action Moisturizer SPF

Now if I know I’m going to be outside more on a particular day I pull out the Superdefense. This moisturizer is a bit thick in consistency but it doesn’t feel “heavy” which I can appreciate. I LOVE it! It has that ‘sun block-y’ smell that I know I most of us can’t stand but it was perfect for jammin’ at Bayside in Miami this past weekend. The price is steep. For $39.50 you only get 1.7 oz little jar but can I tell you a secret? I’ve been using my sample jar for about 4 weeks now. Ha!

I’ve also been playing around with Peter Thomas Roth’s Instant Mineral SPF 30 but I haven’t had the best results being that it gives me that ghostly look. The product says that it is translucent but I object being that it didn’t look too flattering my on brown brown skin. Which made me sad because the concept is ideal; especially with this “mineral make-up” obsession going on in the beauty world.

We’ve covered face, but let’s not forget the body, baby. I have three different levels of SPFs that I use throughout the summer.

Palmer’s Cocoa Butter Formula SPF 15 Body Lotion

I don’t know about yall, but my Momma has been using Palmer’s products for as long as I can remember. What I don’t remember is this particular body lotion. It smells divine! Like a cookie! Now granted, I’m not the type that likes to go around smelling like food. The smell is a bit overpowering for me but pleasant to say the least. I generally use when I’m getting ready for work in the morning and know I will be hittin’ the streets after work for a “every other day” jog. Tis cheap too and provides enough protection without that “smell”.

Peter Thomas Roth Continuous Sunscreen Mist SPF 30

I’m diggin’ this sunscreen each time I wear it. The fact that it is oil-free, water-resistant and has some Vitamin E up in it, well…I mean this is perfect for a quick “walking the outlet malls” hit. I know some people have complexes about aerosol cans and while I don’t use this as much as my other sunscreen products I find that it does the job for when I really don’t have time to lather lotion up and down my arms and legs.

Banana Boat UltraDefense Sunblock Lotion SPF 80

I died laughing when I first saw this product. SPF 80. “Isn’t that a bit extreme?” I thought to myself. But alas the tube of sun blockin’ lube (LOL, I’m a mess) ended up in my basket. I don’t even think about loungin’ by the pool or on a beach chair without this baby here. It provides the ultimate protection for my melanin enriched skin.

….and don’t forget those lippies. It’s a bit on the pricey side but I stand by my MAC Lip Conditioner SPF 15. It is the greatest!

So if you’ve read this far, I’m thinkin’ you deserve the chance to win a sweet treat. I have 3 Lip Butters from Palmers. These glosses come in Dark Chocolate & Cherry AND Dark Chocolate & Peppermint and they taste….I mean feel divine on the lips. First 4 folx to email me the correct answer to the following question WIN!

Where was I born?

…..hint: it’s in Florida and it is a relatively large city. You only get one guess so good luck! Remember to email me, do not leave comments. Readers who have won within the past 6 months are ineligible. As well as personal friends and family members….yes Mom, hate to call you out again but that means you. I will announce the winners on Friday, July 18 during the FOTD Friday post.

Good luck and keep blockin’!

….oh wait, I would love to know what you other brown folx are wearing. Am I the only one that once thought we didn’t have to wear sunscreen? Speak on it!

I used Palmer’s back in the day too! :)

Oh yeah, I usually alternate between Mary Kay, Ambi and L’Oreal when it comes to sunscreen. I was told that too but I’ve always been the one to research. Lo and behold it’s a straight up myth. I also read that when people of color catch skin cancer it’s deadlier because it’s not caught in time. I don’t know how true that is but it’s something to think about.

Hello (I need to take my butt to bed, it’s almost 12am, but anyway…). I am so glad that you posted this. The only time that I wore sunscreen as a child was when I went to the pool, and even then it wasn’t applied properly. Until I started reading my Beauty Bible a couple of years ago I didn’t understand the effects of the sun. I’m the darkest person in my family and they laugh at me when I apply sunscreen all over my body. They seem to think that melanin is natural sun protection. However, my mother has been asking me (because she knows I study the heck out of ingredients) how she can get rid of the spots that she gets on her hand, and I tell her over and over again that she has to apply sunscreen, but she doesn’t. Oh well, at least I got her into the habit of applying it on her face.

Anyhow, as for what I use:
For my face my HG is Neutrogena Healthy Defense Daily Moisturizer spf 30. I love this stuff. I have been using it for about five years and it works great for me.
For my body: Coppertone Oil Free spf 45. I’ve been using this for around four years. It’s great.

The only complaint I have about sunscreen products is that stores tend to not carry my coppertone once summer is over. They act as if just because it’s no longer hot means that the sun doesn’t shine.

Sorry if I am flooding your blog, but great post ^_^

I am so bad with sunscreen…shame on me..especially since I did 2 posts about them and it was my beauty resolution…
    anyways, are you from Tallahassee?

  • Drivi

I love Clinique Superdefense. I have been using it for about 3 weeks now and it has not caused any problems for my sometimes sensitive skin. My skin is oily in some places and this stuff does not make me look super oily.

    :)

  • rmcandlelight

I use the oil of olay complete moisturizer.

I’m probably around your mothers age and as a child we didn’t know anything about no sunscreen and we played out in the sun. I also hear that sunscreen only last so long while out in the sun so you have to keep applying it. So what do you do it you have makeup on? I think you were born in Orlando.

  • xoxo Jaimie

thanks for the sublock advice, pumpkin. I dont stay in the heat to much, but now I know what to get when i do!

  • Brown Girl Gumbo

I use Oil of Olay…it’s the best!!! :-)

Anjela–> What a GREAT point. I know for a fact that my doctors never made it a point to say, “And make sure you use sunscreen.” My Mom is a diiiie hard Ambi fan.

Tashina–> LOL @ melanin being natural sun protector. I like the way that sounds. Too bad it isn’t the case. I may need to check out your Neutrogena Healthy Defense Daily Moisturizer. I think it would be a good idea if I up-ed my SPF level on the face. We seem to carry sunscreen year round here in Florida and I noticed the same thing when I lived in California. But the last time I checked the sun shines everyday everywhere in the world (except in Alaska 1 month out of the year and don’t ask me how I know that….Discovery Channel nerd). You would think they would have sunscreens readily available year round. I guess the best thing to do is to stock up during the winter months or order them online. Thank you so much for your inupt. That was everything BUT flooding, my dear.

Amina–> You better get right and wear that sunscreen, girl. You know better. *cyber frown* And ewwww noooo, let’s go ahead and eliminate that now. Wasn’t born in Tallahassee. Not to mention Tallahassee is about as big as Time Square alone. HA!

Drivi–> Isn’t it great? I’m glad to see you wearin’ the sunscreen on the face too, sis! I may have to break down and eventually purchase this. My sample ain’t gon last forever. :(

rmcandlelight–> First of all, I swear you are the world’s best supporter. Thank you for always supporting Clumps of Mascara. I’ve been meaning to tell you that but I think you are GREAT! Thanks for bringing that up. You DO have to keep re-applying sunscreen. Every 4 hours, I believe and even more if you are dippin’ in the water. I don’t wear face make-up (a dab of concealer and a little blush at the most) so I’ve never had to worry about my make-up running. A friend of mine puts some of her sunscreen in her liquid foundation and applies it that way. Not sure how well that works but any way you can get some SPF on your face, get it there!

Jaimie–> Now you know those Atlanta summers don’t play.

BBG–> Yay!! Join the Olay cult!

I use Olay Complete for my face as well and it is the only moisturizer I have found that has not broken me out! I’m a fan of Neutrogena’s Dry Sunblock for my face though.

  • Afrodite

I used to not pay mich attention to sun protection but now I do. I use that same Oil of Olay moisturizer and it is the businassssss! My mom put me up on that years ago and the rest is history.
