Mascara Monday: Rimmel Sexy Curves mascara

| April 6, 2009 | 17 Comments

Happy Monday, family! I hope that you all had spectacular weekends! I would like to thank you all again for your support of Amor de Lacquer week. I thought it was a huge success? What do you think? I’d love to get your feeedback on the poll on the main page of the blog.

And for those of yall that were irritated with the non-stop talk of all things nails….your time is coming up! Want to see a week worth of mascara talk? All things blushes? Hair? Lips? Or eyes? Let me know at Brittany@ClumpsOfMascara.com.

OH….and I tell you that there is an official archive for ALL of the mascaras that I have reviewed? The MASCARA BIN tab is also on the main page of Clumps. All mascara reviews will end up there and per the request of readers, I have organized it by rating.

Where will Rimmel Sexy Curves end up? Hmmmm…..

Rimmel Sexy Curves mascara

Price: 5 out of 5 (around $7 from Wal-greens )
Packaging (Brush Wand): 4 out of 5
Overall: 4 out of 5

What it claims: “Lashes look up to 70% curlier with voluptous volume(per packaging)

The truth:
Volume? Not so much. Curl? Okay…..not too bad.

What I loved about it:
Despite it looking a little strange, I actually really like the brush.

What I didn’t like:
Grrr, it didn’t give me the dramatic level of volume I was looking for. I know that most curling mascaras don’t provide a good amount of volume but this one said that it would so….*pouts*…I’m sad.

Overall: If I could give an award to the “Most Passed By Mascara”, I would give it to Rimmel’s Sexy Curves. I have been eye-ing this mascara for months! But for some reason….I never bit the bullet and gave it a try. Until now.

First, let’s talk about the wand.

Rimmel calls this their “triple plump brush” and that it “curves in for volume and curves out for maximum curl.” Um. Okay. I’m not sure what that means and they don’t exactly provide directions for it so I used this wand the same way I would use any other.

Well…I like it! It makes for decent application with minimal strain. I don’t really understand WHY it is made that way but it doesn’t give me any problems, so a sista ain’t complainin’!

In terms of the mascara’s performance….it’ s good! It gave me A LOT of curl. I found that by bringing the lashes up from root to tip and holding it for a few seconds, I got a better hold. Sometimes I feel like curling mascaras should have some kind of spritz in them–just so that they can hold that curl. Not sure how eye-safe that would be but it’s a thought, hmmmm?

So yes, Sexy Curves gave me that curl. It didn’t hold up as much as I would have liked it but such is the case with most curling mascaras. To get the maximum amount of curl I would suggest curling your lashes with an eyelash curler prior to application.

Lashes without mascara
(DID curl lashes)

Lashes with 2 coats of mascara

Would I recommend it?: Sure. But only if you are okay with curling your lashes first. However, if you have bone straight lashes and eyelash curlers don’t work too well for you, this mascara may not work.

Have you tried this mascara yet? What do you think?

I have also reviewed Rimmel’s Glam Eyes mascara.

Enjoy your Monday, family!

Always,

You’re the first person who I’ve seen give this a good review. LOL. It doesn’t look bad to me. I’m not a mascara girl myself, lippies being my thing but I wouldn’t mind trying it. Diggin the “sexy” packaging.

  3. Miss Pretty says:

I think the packaging is cute! I have short straight lashes so I need something that proves true! :)

    thanks for the review!
I’ve recently found that maybelline waterproof Full and Soft holds curl like NO OTHER (provided you curl your lashes first…but you seem to have curly lashes already). Anyway, i was really surprised.
    Have a good monday!

this wand is copying the fairy drops mascara! this is what I hate about Rimmel, they’re ALWAYS copying things from japanese brands! I hope they at least pay them before using their designs (well, I’m sure japanese brands wouldnt let them get away with it!)
    thanks for the review B!

i’m glad i didn’t get it. i kept thinking that the brush looked nice but that it might just be all lies lol

I bought one just the other day because it was on sale at Walgreens for 40% off. I sent it to you on twitter but I guess you don’t get it if you don’t follow me too. I thought it was pretty good considering that I have uber-curly lashes. No curling needed for me!

There was a lady at my Wal-Mart this weekend who was the Rimmel Cart handing out flyers or something. Anyway, this is second on my want to try list after Lash Stilleto. I’ve got to get that one, its BOGO at Walgreens I think this week.

hmm it looks cool. i like that brush. but i don’t think it’ll make my lashes get curvy. i have stick straight small lashes. but its worth a try! thanks for the review!

I bought it because I had heard so many good things about this mascara around the office and how it was great for Asian eyes; it was also on sale. However, I was a bit disappointed with it. I felt that this only worked well after curling and using a primer. Using it alone or only after curling it didn't seem to give much of an effect. I guess I'll be sticking to Maybelline's Colossal for now.
