Mascara Monday: L’Oreal Extra Volume Collagen mascara

| May 4, 2009 | 23 Comments

Happy happy Monday! As always….I have another mascara review! This happens to be L’Oreal’s newest. I received a total of 9 requests for this mascara.

Do we have another L’Oreal Voluminous winner?

Check the review…..

L’Oreal Extra Volume
Collagen mascara

Price: 3 out of 5 (I got this for $9.99 at Walgreens but you get can it from Target for $6.49)
Packaging (Brush Wand): 4 out of 5
Overall: 3 out of 5

What it claims: Opps…I threw the packaging away! *cries* And we all know how well these drugst0re brands are at updating their sites. NOT!

The truth:
I mean….it’s okay. Just average. Nothing spectacular.

What I loved about it: I liked the wand…easy to use with minimal excess mascara on the brush.

What I didn’t like: It didn’t give me enough volume. I mean…it was just mediocre.

Overall: Okay…so basically this mascara is supposed to use collagen technology to plump your lashes up 12x their natural volume. 12x is a little dramatic but aren’t all mascara claims? To be honest….this mascara didn’t really impress me. Granted I wasn’t completely turned off by it but it didn’t make me want to throw a party either. It is an average mascara with no spectacular results.

Lashes without mascara
(did not curl lashes)

Lashes with 2 coats of mascara

Would I recommend it?: Not really. I think that there are other great mascaras out there. I would only snag this one if it was on sale.

*yawn* See how excited I am about this baby? Peep the video review:

Has anyone tried this mascara yet? Am I the only one missing the spark or is it really just average? What say you?

The idea of using collagen in cosmetic is, to me, pretty gross, considering it’s body tissue. xD But yeah, definitely an underwhelming mascara. But a great review nonetheless, I was curious to see what your thoughts were going to be. :)

Maybe it’s just the me, but the pictures make that mascara look amazing. It looks like one of the best you’ve ever tried. However, you weren’t as excited as I am, so i guess its just the picture

After watching your video I can say THANK YOU….you saved me from a bad mascara ;-).
    Happy Monday.

Bought it at the same time as the new Revlon crap you reviewed last week. Hated both, but this one is definitely better than the Revlon I guess, as it is actually useable :)

  7. Milan Angel says:

I was seriouslsy unimpressed by this mascara. I don’t see myself grabbing for it again so I’ll probably give it to my younger cousin or let it dry out. LOL!

i HATE this mascara. It's ridiculously clumpy. ew.

  11. Kittieb0o says:

    I've been DYING to try this mascara, & let me tell you, i've found another HG! I have super long (up to my eyebrows) full volumized(two layers hahaha) eyelashes (without mascara!) so i need something that works with that not against it and wont make me feel like my eye is dragging down, and that i could keep adding coats throughout the day. This mascara did everything it said it would AND made me look like i have even MORE eyelashes, (how is that humanly possible with someone with a millionbajillion?);

    Love itLOVEitLOVEIT!!!!

  12. Anonymous says:

I'm in love with it. I think it's one of those mascaras that people either love or hate. I all ready have long eyelashes so I need volume most of the time. I agree with Kittieb0o….this stuff rocks!

  13. Anonymous says:

this is one of the best mascaras, it gives me a lot of volume and length, and its very black and i love it!!

  14. Anonymous says:

Despite your poor review, this is my absolute favorite mascara. I already have pretty long eyelashes, but this stuff doesn't clump and keeps my lashes soft. I LOVE it!

  15. Mrs. Kristen Faber says:

I have super long lashess too, however I found it was extremely smuggy and worked against my eyelash curler. Thought of reviewing those? HG eyelash curler is REVLON! They can at least do that right!

  16. Anonymous says:

I think this stuff is TERRIBLE. It doesn't seem to dry – even after hours, and makes your lashes clump together if they touch. Even after a day of wear.

  17. RaindropzxD says:

I thought this mascara smelt TERRIBLE! Like gone off beer. But, other than that, it was a pretty decent mascara i thought.

  18. I have to say this is a great product! magnifies my lashes unbelievably! Better then false lashes. I can’t believe it! I like it! I have nice lashes but this mascara made them extra long and thick. Like really long! What I have been missing! Love it! I was going to try falsies but picked this instead. Glad I did. I may try that one to compare. We will see. I think this one is the better one. I like the big brush. Gives you much more volume.

  19. malachais says:

I actually really love this mascara, it is just as good as any lancome mascara out at a cheaper rate. Lets face it – if you have very fine short lashes, you can’t expect mascara to somehow make your lashes grow wonderfully and work wonders.

  20. rlbrown@liberty.edu says:

One of the worst mascaras I’ve tried lately. I have thin, short, sparse lashes and I like a LOT of mascara for obvious reasons. I suppose if you already have great lashes, this stuff isn’t that bad, but if you have slight to average lash volume don’t waste your money. The brush is weird, and hard, and the mascara takes FOREVER to build up to anything, and it doesn’t hold the curl. It should definately be marketed as more of a defining mascara instead of a volumizing one.

  21. Kathy says:

I just started using this mascara and I really love it. It takes several coats but it works great and you can see all of my lashes. I think it’s because of the brush design!! It gets an A + from me!!!

  22. Miss Tee says:

I actually love this mascara as far as the formula is concerned. It gives me insane volume when I apply layers of it, but the mascara tends to clump on the wand so be careful and make sure to remove the excess. I’m a diehard Lancome mascara fan, but I will say you can get comparable volume with this as you would with hypnose. Give it a try ladies, u must always keep in mind that each and every eye on everyone is different and what works for me may not work for you.

  23. kelsey says:

this is one of my favourite mascaras to use but what you’ve said is pretty valid but this mascara works excellent as a combination when used with the maybelline xxl lengthening mascara as it adds such volume to an excellent lengthening/seperating mascara.. I find it hard to find a perfect all round mascara thats lengthens and adds volume so i like to mix and match but thats just my opinion :)
