Mascara Monday: Lancome Oscillation Powerbooster primer

| August 31, 2009 | 9 Comments

So I reviewed the world famous Lancome Oscillation mascara primer here. And I absolutely loved it. Is Powerbooster a nice little addition? Or a nice little rip off?

Check out the review….

Lancome Oscillation
Powerbooster mascara primer

Price: 2 out of 5 (around $39.00 )

Packaging (Brush Wand): 5 out of 5
Overall: 4 out of 5

What it claims:

“* Conditions: to fortify and strengthen lashes
* Primes: to prepare and improve lash surface, separates, defines for a perfect smooth lash surface. Vibrations: Wraps lashes with formula up to 360°, to reinforce separation and coverage; formula is coated onto lashes to allow for mascara to glide
* Boosts the appearance of natural lash growth: healthier base
* Maximizes mascara lash results: maximized effects of mascara applied over it – you will see immediate results; Powerbooster intensifies color, longer lasting mascara

Results are spectacular: visibly stronger, fuller, longer day after day.” (source)

The truth:
It’s kinda pricey for a primer…..I can’t even lie. But for extreme EXTREME lashes, I guess it’ll do the trick.

What I loved about it: It has a wand just like the regular Oscillation!

I love this wand! It is great at getting allll of those lashes. The Powerbooster has a bit of a curved look to it. I’m not sure if I damaged it or if it’s supposed to be that way. Hmm, it is also a tad bit more flimsy than the original Oscillation. This isn’t bad per se but I prefer a super sturdy wand for more control. Still not complaining because the bristles are phenomenal!

What I didn’t like: The price still bothers me. I know Lancome is a higher-end brand but $40 on a primer is…..wowsers.

Overall: First, let’s give props to Lancome to rolling out with another innovative mascara. I mean, the vibrating mascara had me at “hello” but a vibrating primer? Now that’s just too cool for words.

Let’s compare the two for a minute….we know that both are similar, if not identical. And if you put them side-by-side, they look that same from those angles too.

See!

So no major changes there. The formula of most primers are usually creamier than a mascara’s formula. Not a bad thing–simply an observation.

The key to primers is applying mascara on top of them before the primer dries. This isn’t too much of an issue with Lancome’s. So yay in that department! I purposely waiting a good 4-5 minutes before applying my mascara and my lashes remained primer-coated without any stiffness.

Now check out my lashes before I applied Powerbooster.

Womp womp…not bad but could be better, right? Check out what I get with one quick run through of Powerbooster on my lashes.

Whoooooa! Not so bad for just a primer right?

And then with one coat of the regular Oscillation, I got this:

I kinda like the look of my lashes with just the primer. HA!

I have mixed feelings about a vibrating primer. On one hand, I love it. It really gets my lashes OUT THERE before mascara application. On the other hand, it seems semi-pointless with the fabulousness that is Lancome Oscillation mascara. Buuuut, is it great with other non-vibrating mascaras. Yes!!

Do you need both the vibrating wand AND the vibrating mascara? I don’t think so. Tell me if you can tell a difference between the above photos and the ones below.

This time I used Oscillation by itself WITHOUT the primer.

Lashes without mascara
(did NOT curl lashes)

Lashes with 1 coat of mascara

Ummm, yeah…..I don’t see THAT much of a difference. So I really am on the fence.

Would I recommend it?: I think Oscillation Powerbooster is a great little splurge if you have the money but I’d much rather spend my money on the regular Oscillation. And even if money wasn’t an issue, I would still go with Oscillation.

Unless of course you’d like to use the primer with many different mascaras.

So what do you think? You want it? Got it? Love it? Hate? Tell me!

  4. Phyllis Bourne says:

I like the primers… but not sure I'd use 'em enough to justify the purchase.

Wow! you paid 40$ for a mascara primer!?, can someone say addicted?? that could've gotten you clothes or something considering how mascara expires in 3 monthes lol and how others mascara like most you've tried give you the same result… but it still looks ok.

I don't know. I'm not sold on either one – the mascara or the primer. I'm basing my opinion off of Maybelline's version of the oscillating mascara though so I could be totally wrong. Also, I think comparing the pic of you with primer and without, the mascara only seemed to give you more lash density. Either way, you have pretty eyes Brittany! Thanks for the photos and the review!!!

Just ran across this on the HSN website. It's $39, with flex pay available (2 payments of $19.50). Don't know how long that will last, but it's there now.
