Primers, primers, primers….

So we all know how important primers are.

Or do you?

If I plan on wearing eyeshadow I ALWAYS have to put down a base. My eyelids are greasier than than a mofo….trust me on this one, y’all. They are just a hot greasy oily mess. Eye shadow primers are lifesavers and my shadow colors vibrant and lasting all day.

The above are my favorite.

What kind of primers do you use? Concealer, pencils, gel liners, potions, paint pots?

  • Christie

Primers? I have no idea. My makeup knowledge is extremely limited. I bought eyeshadow for the first time about a month ago. So yeah, I'm clueless.

  • GreenEyedArtist

Urban Decay Primer Potion lasts through my grueling workouts, all night fun, and then some. As for my skin, I have yet to find anything that actually controls the oil, though Smashbox Anti-Shine does an ok job.

  • Alex

I usually just use my concealer, but I don't wear a lot of eyeshadow. I've been thinking about trying Too Faced Shadow Insurance though, or maybe the one from Benefit.

  • Alex

Okay, I didn't mean Benefit, I acutally meant Bare Escentuals Prime Time.

  • Chelle

I use Urban Decay Primer Potion and it works wonders for me! =)

im a too faced shadow insurance girl. if im not going to be somewhere for that long, i just use mac paintpot in groundwork, especially if im doing a nuetral look anyway. when i first started using makeup, i just did a mac shadestick but i dont like those much anymore. i dont know y i bought this last one and now idk what to do with it b/c it's not all that convenient to wear.

  • L. Michelle

My eyelids are greasy too, so I use Shadow Insurance as well for my eyelids.

If I am going out and REALLY want to be cute, I use Smashbox Photo Finish Foundation Primer.

  • thenaturebabe

Urban Decay. I haven't tried many, because for almost 5 years I was not allowed to wear any form of cosmetics to work (yes, even nail polish!!) and now that I can… well, just imagine!! :)

  • Product Junkie Diva

I don't really wear eye shadows but on the rare occasion that I do, i wear udpp. I also have a paint pot from Mac, the popular brown one, i forgot the name.

  • jana

    PJD, do you mean groundwork?

I myself am a UDPP gal, love it and won't leave home without it. I've tried Benefit's Lemon Aid, WASTE of money. Worked for about 6 hours and then went right to oily. When my UDPP is done, i'll try the 2 faced and smashbox, both of which I heard works just as well

  • Martha

My lids too are oily and shadows have been known to crease within as little as 15 minutes! I got Too Faced Shadow Insurance as a sample from Sephora (thinking if it didn't work, no big deal) and it's so amazing! I actually found myself checking my lids every hour to see if it would crease and it never did. Actually, it did… NINE HOURS LATER!! I am quite impressed! I can finally confident in my super dark/smokey eye looks… stuff is pure gold!

  • slackey210

My lids are like an oil slick. I've tried L'oreal Decrease which did work, but it didn't hold up all day. So then I tried the smashbox eye primer and it seems to be working ok. Nothing is every 100% on me because I'm sooooo oily. I have use the L'oreal cream paints as a primer before and it has been just as good as the Smashbox. Only thing is you have to work fast because it dries QUICK! I've heard that NYX makes a good one but I haven't tried it yet. In a pinch, cream shadows work well and a little foundation does too.

I use Mac CCB on my lids with great results…I actually use UDPP on the tailend of my brows….I apply with an angled brush then put my brow colour over that and it keeps my brows on all day :)

  • gio

I use Urban Decay Primer Potion and it works very well for me. Sometimes I use Senna Cosmetics Totally Transforming eyeshadow primer and that works well too, but I prefer UDPP. I get the best color payoff with it.

  • Stefanie

I usually use MAC's paint pots as my base. I do have Too Faced and Urban Decay's primers but usually I don't feel like waiting for them to dry so I just stick to my paint pots. I have Painterly, Groundwork, and Indianwood.

Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion works wonders!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was never able to wear eyeshadow until I started using Urban Decay. It is my makeup's holy grail!

  • Execumama

Uhhh, I am ashamed to say that even though eyeshadow is almost a daily occurrence my life — yes, even on a trip to run errands, I'll don some basic brown/jeweled tone green combo to match my earrings — I had no clue that primer existed!! Aaaw, sookie, sookie now…I'll be testing some primers next week. Thanks, CoM – *Insert cheesy grin and thumbs up sign here*

  • Fly Honey

i used too faced shadow insurance. i've tried the groundwork paintpot and noticed it doesn't have half the staying power of the shadow insurance. my stilife paint by mac is pretty good though.

  • Angela

    definitely have to be udpp

  • Chelsea

mary kay triple action eye enhancer is by far the best eyeshadow primer i have ever tried! i use it every-single-day. works so much better than bare escentuals =\

  • Liz

I have been using the Arbonne makeup primer and I LOVE it. It is pricey at $32.50, but one little pump does your whole face (eyelids included) and your eyeshadow will last 12-16 hours!

  • Sparklecrack Central

I use paint pots and cream shadows – nothing that's called a "primer", though I've known people to rave about them. I also have oily lids – and heavy lids – a nasty one-two combination. Even with a good primer and applied wet, eyeshadows can not last longer than about 10 hours on my lids.

  • Christine

i use urban decay primer potion.. but it starts to crease after a few hours. grr!

  • Gigi

wow im surprised it's not urban decay. i just bought myself my first primer (too faced) and love it so far. my eyelids are also sooo greasy as well as my face.

to the person who said they don't know what primer to use to control the oil, i recommend Proactives mattifying gel which prevents excess sebum. It's a GREAT primer when used in moderation.:) I find it to be cheap for the huge tube you get.

  • shawn

i used to be an udpp girl, but even though the packaging is cute the wand cannot pick up the primer when it gets a little low. at $17 and the waste of product i decided to try another. after reading reviews on makeupalley, i tried E.L.F.'s primer–i figured i couldn't lose for $1. i am not a fan of their products, but this has worked well! i haven't used it working out to see if it holds up as well in this arena as udpp, but i think this primer is a great, cheap alternative. seriously saves me some money!! anyone else tried it??

  • B

Shawn—> Nooo, I haven't tried it yet! But since you've given it a great review, I'm definitely going to check it out.

  • Rachaychay

i just bought Too-faced Shadow Insurance last friday. I tried it for the first time today. All day and even after my basketball practice, my eyeshadow and eyeliner didn't budge. I highly reccomend this product!

  • Anonymous

definately too faced shadow insurance person…doesnt crease & helps w/my oily lids

  • I like Urban Decay’s Primer Potion…oldie but goody!

  • Well, of course I may be a little biased, but I like the Mary Kay Eye Primer. I don’t say that just because I sell it, but because it’s what I like to use. That’s how I got involved with them…I was very impressed with the quality of all of their products. Just another option.. ; )
