Beauty Review: Maybelline Lasting Drama gel eyeliner

Gel eyeliners! Gel liners are seriously a lot like mascaras in that I love to buy them to see if they are better than the previous ones I’ve tried. Once upon a time, gel eyeliners used to be hard to find in drugstores. But thanks to L’Oreal HIP and now Maybelline, you can now grab the ‘used to be high-end only’ liners at your nearest CVS, Walgreens, Duane Reade, Rite Aid, Longs, etc. Hollerz!

Now..let’s take a look at Maybelline’s Lasting Drama

The packaging makes some pretty serious claims. 24 hours? Really?

Let’s take a closer look at the packaging.

Waterproof? Check! Smudgeproof? Check! These are qualities that I NEED in a good gel liner. Well y’all, I am proud to say that Lasting Drama is a phenomenal drugstore gel liner. It isn’t too thick and cake-y (like L’O HIP’s) but it isn’t as watery (like Clinique’s) either.
I snagged the color in Charcoal but it isn’t as dark as I normally like my black liners. Still, it isn’t too shabby for drama-less work appropriate looks. It also comes in a brown and purple and with a liner brush.
If I were you, I’d trash it and go with a better angled brush. Two cookies for effort, Maybelline but I’m not sure if this is the best kind of brush to use with a gel liner. BUT…if someone finds success with it, please let me know!
MAC Fluidline in Blacktrack and Maybelline’s Lasting Drama liner…

So is it a good dupe for a higher end brand gel liner? I think so! I got it on sale for $6.99. The average luxury gel liner costs anywhere between $13-$25. So if you do the math…well, do you even need to? Lasting Drama is an incredible deal with great performance.

Eye see you!

Yep…it has my eye of approval. Okay, I’ll stop it with the ‘eye’ jokes. Eye promise.

Have you tried this yet?
Whatcha think?

Good to know! I love my Bobbi Brown liner, but if I can save $11 for the same effect I'm jumping ship :-)

  • What’s The Rage

Oh! hmm my L'oreal HIP eyeliner dried up within like 10 days ahah. I am going to try this or the MAC.. probably both!

  • Martha

I see the little wing you did with the liner and I love it! I use L'oreal HIP and since I so rarely need a gel liner it works great for my purposes. Though, the one by Smashbox is the BEST of the brands by far in my opinion. But good to know there's more options for the gals!

I've NEVER used a gel liner. Can you believe that?

It just seems like such a hassle. Liquid eye liner seems faster to do…

I might try this though! It looks good!

That's actually their Gray liner, that's why it isn't black. The black one is Blackest Black :)

    Thanks for the review 😀
I haven't seen the liner where I live but I hope I've just missed it 😛 Or that it'll come out here eventually 'cus you've made me want to try it 😀

You have an uncanny knack for reviewing things I've been wondering about. I just saw this liner in an ad this past week and thought "Ooh! But I'd better look up some reviews first…" Now I know I can buy it without hesitation! Thanks!

I snagged this not long after I saw it hit the shelves and I fell in love instantly. It was my first gel liner so I couldn't compare it to anything, but I think it's the bomb – tick tick. lol! I even liked the brush, I tried it with my SK bent eyeliner brush and that didn't work so well, maybe I should be using another type brush?? IDK, but it worked out ok for me. But again I'm a gel liner virgin so what do I know. :-)

  • Milan

Been looking for these! Gonna grab it when I find it. Thanks for the review! :)

  • xmattmac

The brush that it came with, I had an idea; you could use it as a lip brush! It looks like it would work even if it won't be the best for gel liners.

Just a thought :) Thank you for this review! 😀

Just be sure not to use the WnW gel liner. It's AWFUL! It stained my brushes and wouldn't spread on my lid at all. Waste of money, that one. Maybe I'll try this one. I'm using Stila's Smudge Pot right now, and it does a fantastic job, but not on the waterline. How does this hold up on the waterline?

Uncanny for REALZ!!! I went on the only mission between last Thurs & Fri looking for this in black…finally found it @ the 4th Walgreens I went to (no black @ Ulta, Target or Wally World). I am LOVING IT!! I find it to be much easier to apply than liquid eyeliner, and it truly lasts. I have SUPER oily eyelids and it has smudged just a teeny bit. Oh, and as of last Thursday, there was a $2off coupon on the Maybelline website.

  • The Red Lip

I love gel eyeliners, so it's good to know that there's a good drugstore one. I'll probably try them out if I ever run out of gel eyeliner, though they tend to last me quite a while. :)

Eye totally think this is a great product LOL…off to Walgreens to treat myself again. Love your site and your reviews. Keep 'em coming!

  • Divadebbi

Thanks for the review…I was on a Bobbi gel liner kick for a long time but got away from it. HATED Hips version…that went right back to CVS. The Maybelline sounds pretty terrific for the price and I still have the expensive brush I had to buy to get decent application from the BB.

    Thanks GlamourSquad Sister!

Hi Debbie darlin'—> Yeah, HIP's was definitely one of the worst I've tried. You can get Maybelline's even cheaper if you wait for a sale. Walgreens is known to have 40% off of all Maybelline products from time to time. Let me know if you try it and like it. :)

  • Pumps and Gloss

I am going to try this one. My HiP took awhile to dry out, but I moved on Shu Uemura's version, which I love!! Nice to have a cheaper option.

  • Ambreen

I've never used a gel liner before. Is it hard to use? I've used liquid liner & that takes me a while.

  • Meagan

I bought this today, after reading your review of it. I've never tried gel liner before, but I'm now in love. I haven't had any troubles with the brush. I kind of like it.

love maybelline's but i have the most oily eyelids on earth, so im thinking of trying out mac/bobbi brown… i need it if it works… but im really used to maybellines brush, never used an angled brush in my life!

  • Ashley

Thank you for this review! I never wear eyeliner because I could never find one that went on right or that stayed on. I'm definitely going to try this one :)

  • Yashuragi

Charcoal is a grey-based colour, not black!
Blackest black is their ‘true’ black colour. You should check it out! It’s VERY dark and black.

I personally use the free liner brush that comes with it. I actually like it. It can easily make thin crisp lines with it.

  • amanita

Love this product.First time w/a gel.No problems with the brush either. Its sort of like a soft felt tip pen.Too bad the colors are so limited tho..All in all,Ill buy it again. Thanks for the review!
