Mascara Monday: Maybelline XXL Pro Curl Recourber

Next up for Maybelline’s XXL Pro line is the mascara that is all about curl. Curl, baby! Some of us need volume. Some of us desire length. And some of us want curly lashes. I think it’s hard to find a good curl mascara and I seriously believe that to get a good amount of curl, you’ll need to use a eyelash curler.

 How does this baby do?

Price: 5 out of 5
Packaging (Brush Wand): 3.5 out of 5
Overall: 5 out of 5

What it claims:
Per the packaging…

The truth: 45° angle? Uh…I didn’t know there was geometry in mascaras. Help!

What I loved about it: Like…it actually curled. Score!

What I didn’t like: Applying it can be tough because you can’t get much of a grip on the handle.

Overall: I have always been pretty skeptical when it comes to curl mascaras. Their concept always confused me. Like…exactly how can it curl? What is in the formula that makes it curl AND keeps it curled? Talk about a mystery. While I didn’t crack the case on this one, I was pretty amazed at its performance.

First of all, the etymology nerd that is me had to look up what ‘recourber’ meant. It’s French for “to bend”. I wouldn’t know how to conjugate it since my second language is Spanish, pero we digress. Aren’t you glad I cleared that up? Mascara reviews and etymology. Gotta love Clumps!

By George, girls…it curls! I know, I know…I’m am just as shocked as you all are. I really like this mascara and I think it gets the job done. Like all Maybelline XXL Pro mascaras you’ve got a primer on one end and the mascara on the other.

La Primer…

La Mascara…

The curved wand REALLY assists in the application. I used it to press up against my lashes. Like so…

I would hold it in that position for a few seconds and for the same for the next eye. This technique, I think, forces your lashes to curl a bit. Now one of the problems I did run into with this baby was the lack of grip. It was so hard to get good control of the wand because I felt like it kept hitting my face.

Yeah, I don’t know. Maybe it’s just me and my fat face. Ah well!

Lashes without mascara
(did not curl lashes)

Lashes with 2 coats of mascara

First the primer…

…look, it’s already curling!And then…

Not bad at all, uh? Now, hold on just a second…I must warn you. The curl may drop just a bit throughout the day. Especially if you’re in a warm, humid or tropical climate i.e. Florida. Still…what is left is pretty impressive.
Go ‘head, Recouber. I approve!

Would I recommend it?: If you are looking for a curl mascara, this one may do you right!

I wish they'd elongate the wand more, I'd have a hard time applying it when the wand is that short… but it does look curled and natural! <3

  • Askmewhats

that's a nice looking mascara and the wand does look a bit difficult to work on! :) I have almost impossible lashes and mascara that curls..and LENGTHEN is what i love :)

  • Giselle

i have super straight lashes and i'm always buying curling mascaras..including this one, and it really didnt work for me. the primer helped a little, but the actual mascara straightened my lashes back out. i actually think the regular xxl mascara did much more for curling my lashes

I always have to end up re-curling my lashes after a couple of hours, I should try this out!

    Recourber:

    Je recourbe
    Tu recourbes
    Il/Elle/On recourbe
    Nous recourbons
    Vous recourbez
    Ils/Elles recourbent

Spanish is my second language (learned in HS) and I'm currently learning French (3rd year in college). French made me forget most of my Spanish haha.

  • MissSweet♥

Wow! That looks like a great mascara! No clumps either :)

Meagan Elizabeth—> Thanks for conjugating that for me. French conjugation seems to be similar to Spanish…but who really uses the Vosotros/Vous? HA!

I tried out this mascara (waterproof, curl XXL) for a week and each day I would have smudges under my eyes by lunchtime. :O( I tried it in March in TX too – not too hot out yet but can you imagine what I would look like in August when it really starts cookin outside??

Major bummer. I LOVED Maybelline's sky high curves – it never smudged for me, but now that it's discontinued, I've had a hard time finding another mascara that measures up.

Smudges by lunchtime. Need hardcore makeup remover to take it off. And definitely not waterproof. Don’t waste your 12 bucks.

I realize you wrote this review over 2 years ago, but I have been researching curling mascaras because this product is the ONLY one I’ve ever found to REALLY & TRULY curl my long but stick straight lashes and keep them curled. I was heartbroken when Maybelline discontinued it. Just bought 5 of them off Amazon for very cheap, but still have to find a new one that works. So far, I’ve tried Maybelline Falsies Flare (didn’t curl or lift at all), Hard Candy Big Curls Don’t Cry (even worse than the Falsies Flare). Have heard good things about of all brands – Wet-n-Wild’s curling mascara.
