Mascara Monday: L’Oreal Double Extend Eye Illuminator mascara

Alright L’Oreal. We haven’t seen each other since that Million Lashes mascara.  A Clumps reader told me about this one and I was a wee bit shocked at my not seeing it for many weeks. To keep up with the trend, L’Oreal is giving us a dual wand mascara. I know, I know. Are you sick of these yet? But wait…it not only has two wands, but it also promises to illuminate your eyes. Oh gosh. Y’all know how I feel about those claims. Let’s take a look see…

Price: $10.99
Packaging (brush wand): 3 out of 5
Overall: 3 out of 5

What It Claims: Per the packaging.

The Truth: I really don’t like these little glitter specs in “illuminating” mascaras. Pfft.

What I Loved About It: It does a pretty good job at lengthening.

What I Didn’t Like: Those glittery specs that ended up falling in my eyes. Oww!!

Overall: Oh gosh, I have just about had enough of these dual-wand mascaras. It’ starting to become a wee bit annoying at this point. Especially from L’Oreal since it seems like they have done several in the past year or so. But alas, here we go…

The primary wand is okay.

Remember, it’s a lengthening mascara so we’re not looking for volume. But with two coats, I only got a little bit of length. The spherical part of this wand can be used to apply the illuminating mascara from root to tip or just the tip of your lashes  to the tips.

I really wanted to see how much bling bling was in this mascara and uh…wow.

It’s intense. And not in a good way. The crazy thing is…I didn’t see much of a difference in my lashes when I used this wand. But what I did notice was glittery specs reflecting on my lashes. My eyes stayed irritated due to those specs constantly falling in my eyes. And maybe it’s just me. I’ve always had a problem with these kind of mascaras. Aside from them just not working for me, they irritate my eyes somethin’ serious.

Bare Lashes

Lashes with 2 Coats of mascaras

Lashes with 1 Coat of Illuminating mascara

Can you see any illumination? I can’t. And to make matters worse, the mascara flakes throughout the day. Granted, the length is there with initial application but it flaked away and virtually disappeared by the end of the day.

Would I recommend it?: I always think it’s just me when it comes to the irritation that these “illuminating” mascaras bring. And for that reason, I’d recommend it to others. But strictly for the need of wanting to try a new mascara. That whole illuminating thing doesn’t really exist. Sorry barbies.

Whatcha think? Have you tried this mascara yet?

thanks for the review, I saw this one in the store but I was iffy. Flaky mascara and contacts don’t mix well together, I will def pass on this one

    • Brittany

Yep, flaky mascaras are so not the business.

  • Kym Robinson

    Hey Britt,

Well I can see at least 3 pieces of glitter. lol I can see that this mascara flakes from the bits on your last photo. Maybe they will get it right sometime this decade. SMH

Make it an awesome week on purpose!!!!!

    • Brittany

      Perhaps perhaps. Thanks mama.

  • Lee

I see the illumination but only as specks. I think it might look good if you were on the red carpet or something and wanted a really glam look. Where lots of photos would be taken to create a flash back effect. Otherwise I’m not a fan either.

    • Brittany

      Womp. Me neither.

  • OMG! I’m so glad you reviewed this when you did. I just saw the commercial and was ready to buy it first thing tomorrow morning. But the flakiness and wearing my contacts will drive me crazy! Thanks for saving me! 😀

  • I have to admit, I’ve never quite understood the sparkly mascaras.. maybe for a party, NYE or something? Seems like it would compete too much with other eye make-up. Colored mascaras- sure, I get that- but sparkly? Also, I’ve always found that a nice volumizing jet black fits the bill for emphasizing, haha! Do you really notice a difference with all of these tricksy mascaras? (And zomg they’re sphere applicator SUCKS. They need to start back at square 1!)

Side note: When I was experimenting with matte eyeshadows, I noticed that they really made my eyes stand out, in a sense that the only thing glistening was literally my eye, haha! So, in my head at least, a matte mascara would emphasize your eyes more than a sparkly one?
…That being said, I will never give up my shimmery eyeshadows. 😉

    Thanks for the review!!

    • Brittany

YEah, the sparkly mascaras never made any sense to me either because I find that they just don’t SHOW UP. I haven’t tried a matte mascara in a while. I find that some of those tend to clump up super quickly.

      • Actually, come to think of it, the only matte I’ve tried is the Falsies “Drama” or whatever the name is, lol. I can see the clumpiness, though!

Thanks for the review!! I was all set to buy it based on the commercial. I thought my eyelashes would be all blinged out, but guess not.

    • Brittany

Kinda sad how those commercials give us false hope, uh? LOL

  • *jumping outta lurkmode*

YAY!! Thank you Brittany! I didn’t think you’d get to it so fast!! I’m a contact lens wearer so I don’t think I’ll be holding on to this one. I’m going to get my $$ back..I’m a little annoyed that I used a $2.00 L’Oreal coupon on this purchase, ‘cuz I won’t get my cash back…

Anyhoo…I still have my Maxx Factor highlighting mascara and it doesn’t flake (too bad the brand isn’t sold stateside anymore) so I’ll stick to this for now.

    • Brittany

I told you I’d review it for you. 😉 I soooo miss MF. Ugh!

I don’t see how this could be safe for contact lens wearers…you say you got glitter in your eyes? Ouch! That would hurt so much and I wear contacts…I’ve had one fleck of glitter fall in my eyes before and it really hurt and my eyes were all irritated. They should really change that ”safe for contact wearers” claim.

  • pfffft… not worth it. Dang. Your lashes are lookin’ great though :)

  • valerie

I totally agree with you. My friend and me both bought it and the next day when I put it on I was not pleased. My friend on the other hand loved it, I was not surprised since she doesnt really wear mascara or any makeup. I notice everything about mascara, I love mascara! lol
There are some good ones out there though. My friend just bought one and it looks like it works.

  • Angelina

Ahh man I just bought it. I guess I shouldve read the reviews first. Oh well ima try it every outcome is different
