Things I WON’T do in the name of beauty…

Everyone’s heard that “beauty is pain” right? And to an extent, I’ll agree with that. Threading my brows will never feel good but the outcome is always worth it. However, there are just some things that I find too painful to do. Even in the name of beauty.

First up, I will neeeever

Wear heels on a regular.

Heels have always been painful for me. Don’t get me wrong, I love how they look. I love how they have me at 5’11 and towering over everyone. But physically ,they are PAINFUL. I’ve got flat feet feet and wearing them for hours at a time hurt every part of legs. So no, I’ll take flats over heels any day.

Perm my hair. This is a sensitive topic for most Black women but a lot of us endured quite a bit of pain to get straight hair. For many years I got scalp burns from perms. I can’t remember anything positive coming from chemically straightening my hair and will neeeever do it again. I’ll stick with my natural. Speaking of which, have you ever spritzed floral waters in your hair? That plus argan oil on the scalp feels amaziiiiing.

Rock acrylic nails. Acrylic nails aren’t so bad when you have them on. But the removal process and that period of time AFTER they’ve come off are horrible. My nails would be insanely brittle. So brittle that even peeling a sticker was painful. No way will I ever get acrylics again.

Pierce my nose or belly button. Despite the fact that I’ve done both two times each, the pain endured isn’t worth a third time.

Wax my upper lip. My wonderful threading lady asked if I’d like to get it done (um, were you tryna tell me somethin’, Rashmi? lol) and I thought I could take it. Let’s just say I’d rather get another tattoo on my other wrist than go through that pain again. I’ll stick to trimming the ‘stache with cuticle scissors.

Bleach my teeth. Although I think my teeth are pretty white, I decided to review some whitening strips for Clumps. Welllll, the review never made it to the blog because after using the strip for 2 hours, my teeth were beyond sensitive. Eating was impossible. The pain didn’t go away for an entire day. I’ll stick to baking soda and peroxide.

What are you some things that you just ain’t doin’? Not even for beauty’s sake…

And what’s your preference? Organic skincare products or do you like to grab whatever you can get?

  • Crystalyn

May I ask which whitening product you used that made your teeth very sensitive?

    • Brittany

It was by Crest. I don’t think it’s the brand. I’ve heard from several people that those whitening strips can cause teeth sensitivity.

      • Cinnie

They totally cause sensitivity. Mine ache for about an hour after I take the strips off, then I get odd little pulses of pain for no reason (not chewing or drinking) for the next week.

  • B,
Girl after two lip threading appointments i’m now a pro at sucking up the pain. LOL Great list!

    • Brittany

Really? Oh nooooo, I was sittin’ up in that chair with tears streaming down my face. And I have a high pain tolerance. Can’t…do…it.

      • Ang

I could only laugh at that threading the upper lip comment. It makes you cry and the pain is the worst, but your lip feels like a baby’s bottom when it’s over.

  • Oh what an awesome post idea. I have tried whitening my teeth and also felt sensitivity so stopped. I use Nair’s waxing strips (you heat them up rubbing your hands together) and they aren’t painful at all! I prefer waxing my upper lip because then I don’t have to pluck every two weeks. My eyebrows I like a little fuller so I don’t wax them just pluck occasionally. I agree with all the others :)

    • Brittany

Glad to know I’m not the only one that deals with sensitivity issues when it comes to whitening the teeth.

  • LOL! I hate waxing the ‘stache too. That’s why I bought the Nair tube for the upper lip that comes with the rebalancing moisturizer.

    • Brittany

I can’t even use that because it reallllly breaks my skin out. *le sigh*

  • B,

Love this list! I’m with you 100% on the heels thing (in fact whenever I have to wear them for any extended period I carry a pair of flats in my bag).

I find it odd that you said piercing your nose hurt… I just pierced mine about a month ago and didn’t even feel it.

    • Brittany

I always keep a pair of flats in my car for when I HAVE to wear heels too. And girlfriend, yes…piercing the nose REALLY hurt. The actual piercing wasn’t what hurt. It was the piercer placing the ring in the nose and turning it around to ensure that it didn’t come out. Worst pain ever. Although sometimes I do look in the mirror and miss it. LOL!

  • i know i’m so off topic, but where did u get that hello kitty mirror from? it is adorable!

    • Brittany

Haha, not off topic at all. I got it from Sephora from the Hello Kitty Beauty line.

  • I will never use Nair or a product like it. First degree burns are NO JOKE.

    • Brittany

I used to use Nair growing up but the smell just makes me want to barf. It’s just TOO strong.

  • I will never get a hair weave! I’ve heard that they can hurt and cause rashes.

    • Brittany

I’ve never had a hair weave but that sounds painful!

  • lydia

I agree with you about NEVER getting a relaxer again..I always hated the whole process…I’m so in love with my natural hair I would never every damage it again with chemicals!

    • Brittany

Meeee neither. But I won’t lie and say I’ll never color my natural hair. Gots to have my color!

  • I am terrified of the pain from waxing any part of my body. I use Veet for the not-as-sensitive areas (legs) and shave the rest. haha

I also wouldn’t do any plastic surgery to be “beautiful” =)

    • Brittany

I’m not a waxing gal either. Ouch!!!

  • I agree…I can’t wear heels on a regular basis. My shoes may be cute, but I do want comfort!

  • Cosmolude

I probably won’t relax my hair or wear weaves ever again. My hair and scalp feel better without them. I hate removing acrylic nails, too :-)

I used to wear heels a lot but now I have to wear sneakers for work. I hardly wear heels anymore so I have to re-learn how to walk in them.

I did bleach my teeth two years ago. It did cause sensitivity, but I was knew it was probable because I understood what actually has to happen (enamel and dentin exposure to oxygen) to whiten teeth. I think my teeth are white enough now so I won’t do it again anytime soon.

    • Brittany

Yay for being able to wear sneakers to work! I’ll take comfort over the corn-causing pain heels bring.

  • I am not going to squeeze the best parts of me in Spanx everyday to pretend to be a size that I’m not. I like to breathe!

    • Brittany

That’s a good one! I’m a fan of foundation wear for when I feel like I need to wear it but most days I am #TeamLetItHang. LOL!

  • Kym

I will never wax again. I had my eyebrows done once and almost walked out of the place with just one brow done.

    • Brittany

Ohmigoodness, waxing the brows=never again. Threading hurts too but waxing is just…no ma’am.

  • Stacy

I will never wax my “nether region” LOL!!! Some stuff just ain’t meant to be.

    • Brittany

Since we’re being all personal ‘n stuff…I’ve heard a ton of horror stories from bikini and brazilian waxes. I’ve also heard a lot of positives. With with the skin being extra sensitive down there, I’d much rather find other ways to remove the hair than just ripping it off. Ouch!!

  • I just switched from waxing my brows to threading and I really thought I was the only one! Am I crazy… or does threading hurt MORE?!?!? LOL

In fact, I am due to get mine threaded this week. I’ve been “working late” each night… and I keep missing the ladies over at Eyebrow Zone before they closed! Darn…. but not really! :)

    • Brittany

I agree. Threading definitely hurts more. But it’s over and done with. Waxing lingers and lingers and lingers. Yikes!

  • Love this post.

I detest acrylic nails so I’m right there with you.

Though, I would pick heels over flats any day of the week. I am the exact opposite of you – flats hurt my feet.

I’m all for waxing/threading the entire body. The only place I want hair is on my head and my eyebrows. I’ve gotten so good at it I can do my own waxing and that – TMI alert – includes bikini.

And I support teeth bleaching. Get done at the dentist, in stages…makes for less sensitive teeth.

And…my bellybutton was pierced but I removed it years ago. I got too old for that. LOL.

  • No perms!!! Keepin it nappy!

  • denise

I agree with everything on your list and have to add coloring my hair to my personal list. Up until a few months ago I was coloring and I just could not keep up- the grays came in faster than I could color them. Cut off 12″ of locs and am rocking a salt and pepper TWA and loving it- wash , fluff and go!

    • Brittany

      Oooh yesss, sounds liberating!
