Mascara Monday: L’Oreal Voluminous False Fiber Lashes mascara

Well, well, welllll….it’s been forever and a day since we’ve seen a mascara from L’Oreal. The last one I played around with was Voluminous Million Lashes and that was LAST YEAR. Sheesh. Let’s hope that this kid was worth the wait.

Price: $8.99 from drugstores
Packaging (brush wand): 5 out of 5
Overall: 3.5 out of 5

What It Claims: Per the packaging…

The Truth: Well, it’s not THAT bad.

What I Loved About It: Verrrrry nice wand. Take a look at that.

What I Didn’t Like: It was beyond flaky. And the consistency was just…weird.

Overall: Okay, seriously…what’s with these brands re-using the SAME names? You’ve got L’Oreal Voluminous, Voluminous Million Lashes and now Voluminous False Fiber Lashes. It gets so confusing after awhile. And it doesn’t help that Million Lashes’ packaging looks a lot like False Fiber Lashes. Dag. Come on, L’Oreal. From a consumer and beauty editor’s point of view, me thinks you can be be a little more creative than that. I know it really shouldn’t bug me but it kinda does.

But anyway…

Simply put, this is a fiber mascara. It has tiny pieces of fiber that are supposed to attach themselves to your lashes and help elongate them. Sounds simple enough, uh? Funny thing is, I experienced more volume with this mascara than length. I’m not sure what’s up with the formula on this baby but it seemed to slowly disappear after awhile. I usually experience this with natural mascaras but have never had this problem with a L’Oreal mascara. Literally an hour after I applied 3 coats, the volume and length of my lashes just…dropped. What I was left with was flaky mascara bits oozing down my eyes. So not cool.

The crazy thing is when I applied it, I loved the outcome. I pushed it to the limit and applied 3 coats (I normally do 2) and while it was a bit clumpy dumpy, it looked great. But how could it just disappear like that? Your guess is as good as mine. Oh, and there’s one thing that I don’t like about this mascara. It’s so big!

It’s like an oversized mascara.

Such a whiny complaint, I know, but I don’t like it. It has a weird handle and can make applying a little challenging. The brush is nice to work with. It reminds me a lot of Maybelline the Falsies wand, except the bristles are stiffer and aren’t as spaced out. You won’t run into any troubles with actually applying the mascara. Whether it will last all day or not, however, is another question. The formula is on the thicker side which may be why it looks so clumpy after 3 coats. There’s a Waterproof version of this mascara too. Maybe that one is better.

Bare Lashes

Lashes after 3 coats

Do I recommend it?: Only if you’re itching to try something new. It’s not terrible but it certainly won’t last all day.

Yeahno. I had high hopes for this L’Oreal mascara but the formula is just not up to par.

Have you tried this mascara yet? What do you think?

  • I am shocked that this doesn’t last on you! Wow. I had pretty good results with it. I totally agree with you on the confusing names thing. Because of that, I purchased the wrong one the first time. SMH!

    • Brittany

Crazy L’Oreal. I certainly hope they can come out with less confusing names. Ugh.

    • Tori

Same ! I love this mascara, it’s my fave of recent ! I actually accidentally bought the water proof kind & it works really well & stays on for a good amount of time (unless you sleep on it, obviously, then it starts to flakes). I’ve also noticed that I can apply more coats on a few hours after I initially applied it & it goes on nice without clumping(: Personally, i thought this would be at least a 4/5 stars, but that’s just me & my lashes (:

While I love Voluminous Million Lashes, I really didn’t care for False Fiber Lashes. I couldn’t apply it normally, using my wiggle at the base and pull up through the lashes method. It was so clumpy when I did this I had to comb it out with a spoolie and really work with it. Too much effort if you ask me. It’s almost like it’s too dry of a formula and deposits very heavy on the lashes. And you’re right it doesn’t last very well throughout the day. Won’t be purchasing again!

    • Brittany

Thought I was the only one that struggled with this mascara. Misery so loves company .

  • Darn, I had high hopes for this one. I really like fiber mascaras, my favourite is Dolly Wink Long mascara.. It gives GREAT lengthening and pretty good volume too :) Unfortunately because it’s an import from Japan, it’s expensive!

    • Brittany

Of course now you’ve got me really wanting to try Dolly Wink Long. Where can I get it? I’ll pay pretty pennies to test it out. 😉 The things I’ll do for a good mascara….ha!

  • I was planning to buy one this week. Thanks for the heads up.

I was definitely turned off by the packaging! I was like, why is this in the Million Lashes tube? (Which I never liked to begin with). I probably would have bought it if Loreal would have come up with new packaging for it, maybe in the vein of those cute Japanese drugstore mascaras.
If anything, I wish they would have packaged it in the original Voluminous tube, that one’s way more ergonomic than that huge diagonal Million Lashes one lol

Anyway great review as usual B!

    • Brittany

I looooove Japanese mascaras. Like….a lot! I wish I could review more on Clumps. I need to find a Japanese mascara guru who can be a Clumps ambassador. Ha!

  • hmm…

loreal volumnious had been my mascara drug of choice for years now.

i love the million lashes and just recently got a tube of the false lashes at an event and i love it as well.

but just seeing the word fiber in a mascara makes me a little hesitant.

on another note, your eyes are so gorgeous!

    • Brittany

Fiber usually means a good thing when it comes to mascara. It means you are guaranteed to get some added length. I’m kinda sad that this mascara didn’t really live up to its claims. *le sigh*

  • The whole time I was reading this, I kept trying to get a better look at your nails! Is that Revlon’s Facets of Fuchsia?

    ps- Congrats :)

    • Brittany

You know you’re a beauty girl when….hahaaa! Yep, that’s good ole’ F of F, alright. I LOVE that polish.

And thank you so much, darling.

  • Darn, almost all mascaras smudge on me, so if this smudges/flakes on you, it will almost definitely do the same on me.

I actually think the handle looks pretty cool hahah, but if I had to deal with it every morning (in my half-asleep state), I would probably not be a fan either.

    • Brittany

Yeeeep, this mascara was a total womp for me.

  • I have the waterproof version and I love it. It really grabs on to my lashes and makes then visible. And if I don’t wear a primer, it will never leave my lashes without some serious cleaning.

I really wish I had read this review before I bought this mascara. I had been wanting to buy it so i got it on a whim…. but I dont like it!! I agree with you about the flakiness, the weird formula, and how it just dissappears! :( boo. I was even thinking in the store ” I should see what Brittany has to say first…. naaah I’ll just buy it!” LOL I’ve learned my lesson
