Mascara Monday: Maybelline The Rocket by Volum’Express mascara

Oooooh yeah, Maybelline has a new mascara in town. I’m mad late on reviewing it but ya know…that whole “having a baby” thing kinda threw me off a bit, ya know? 😎 But alas, here we are with a review of one of the most popular mascaras to hit shelves this season.

Price: $5.94 at Walmart and
Packaging (brush wand): 4 out of 5
Overall: 3 out of 5

What It Claims: “Maybelline Volum’ Express The Rocket Washable Mascara’s patented supersonic brush with micro bristles loads on big, sleek volume instantly. Its fast-glide formula keeps lashes smooth. Maybelline Volum’ Express The Rocket Washable Mascara: The most explosive, beautiful lashes ever, 8x bigger, Explosive volume in rocket time, Smoother Zero clumps” (source)

The Truth: It’s not my absolute favorite Maybelline mascara but it’s okay.

What I Loved About It: Super awesome wand that helps with separating wonky lashes. .

What I Didn’t Like: It didn’t volumize the way I really needed it to.

Overall: This mascara totally took me by surprise. I felt like I just reviewed a Volum’Express mascara not too long ago and then along comes The Rocket. The hype didn’t seem to be as prevalent with this one than with other Volum’Express releases. I mean, think about it – the Falsies was everywhere. This kid? Not so much. The thing is, Rocket’s claims aren’t all that spectacular and she isn’t toting any special tricks. She’s just another ‘VolumExpress mascara that promises volume and a pretty awesome wand to boot.

And the wand IS awesome.

It’s an awesome wand if you really need to separate your lashes. I mean, this baby gets them out there. This is actually my favorite kind of mascara if my lashes are doin’ crazy thangs and looking all wonky. Which, by the way, is all the time. And as great as this wand is when it comes to separating, it isn’t so hot in the volumizing department. Plusher wands are better in this regard.

But that doesn’t mean The Rocket sucks. She doesn’t. I just think her volumizing power is mediocre. Lengthening too. Her strength does lie in longevity though. I didn’t get the waterproof version of this mascara but I found that it did a darn good job at lasting throughout the day without any flakes or smudges. Which is always HUGE in my book.

So if you’re bored enough and just want to try something new, this is a great mascara to holla at. But if you’ve got huge expectations, meh…brace yourself to be a tad bit disappointed. Or, Maybelline’s the Falsies mascara. That kid is truly the winner in the Volum’Express department.

Do I recommend it?: Only if you reallllllly want to try something new.

Whatcha think? Have you tried this mascara yet? Is it just me or do some of the other ‘VolumExpress mascaras seem to do a better job?

  • I love your blog so much and love your mascara reviews! I’ve been dying for you to review a certain mascara and haven’t seen it here yet so I want to recommend it to you :) You need to try Rimmel Scandal Eyes Show Off mascara. It has that ball thing at the end of the wand that allows you to “pull and grab” onto your lashes and I think you will love it!

It might just be me, but I love this mascara. For me, it does a great job of volumizing my lashes. I like the fact that its a drier mascara, so I have less time to wait for my lashes to be dry. For me this has taken the place of Lash Blast as one of my go to mascaras.

It’s not just you – I’m absolutely head over heels with this mascara! A definite new drugstore favourite :)

I find that it really volumizes my lashes and makes them look all long and awesome. But from what I’ve seen, it is definitely a love or hate mascara in the beauty world :)

  • gio

I love tha packaging, so eyecatching and colourful! But what the shame the mascara didn’t provide more volume.

  • I hate when a new mascara doesn’t go as expected. I usually need to give it a week or so and then it starts to work better. How many times have you tried this one?

    • Brittany

I’ve been wearing it for some weeks now.

  • YJ

Wow, this review is quite different from the others. A lot of people seemed to love this mascara, but I guess it doesn’t work for short, sparse lashes. Thank you so much for the review! I was about to try this mascara, but since it doesn’t really give much volume, I will stay away from it since I have short, straight and sparse lashes.

  • Liz

Tried it, didn’t like it at all. Returned it back to CVS a week later. I think I’ll stick with The Falsies you recommended. :)

  • JaNelle

I actually like this one.. And I’m totally a volume girl. It gave me great volume and length. And it doesn’t smell icky to me like the falsies.

  • Simone

    For me, this worked amazingly!
My first HG, in fact, and I’ve tried ’em all. Well, all DS mascaras, and many HE.

I’ve got short sparse lashes, but they’ve got a decent curl, if that helps anybody.

I’d definitely recommend at least trying this one! It’s the only mascara that gives me both volume and length! It’s the first time in my life I haven’t found the need to double (or triple) up!!

  • I tried so hard to love this mascara and it ain’t working out for me. :( Falsies is still my favorite from Maybelline… Boo! I thought I was going to enjoy this one.

The waterproof formula of this mascara is awesome!!! Waaay better than any H20 Proof mascara that I’ve ever tried besides Chanel Inimitable. I have super wimpy blond lashes and virtually all mascaras are too heavy and make them fall/droop, even when I use a lash curler (Chanel or Shu). But the Rocket Waterproof is perfect. Super hard to find a waterproof mascara that makes the cut. Hard to find waterproof mascara reviews in general. Regular mascaras no matter how long wearing or transfer proof or curl keeping they claim to be always make my lashes fall. Waterproof’s are drier and seem to do the trick. Thanks for your site :-)
