Busting Beauty Myths + Giveaway!

So girls (and the handful of guys that read this blog)…let’s talk about beauty myths, shall we? I could probably write a book on ’em because there are just THAT many. The sad thing is, when it comes to skincare and my obsession with trying to have and KEEP clear skin, I’ll probably try anything. Except dab pee on my pimples.

Naw. I can’t get down with that. I don’t know if it’s a rumor within the family or not but my girl cousins have this running joke that Grandma has always had clear skin and her “liquid output” is the reason why. Everyone is too afraid to ask her. And to try it. I mean come on, dude. I’m comfortable with my body but I’ve gotta draw a line somewhere.

Check out my list of beauty myths…

Black don’t crack.
Yeah no. Everyone gets wrinkles.

Good skin is all genetic.
Not always. Good skin is also determined by lifestyle and diet.

Water is important for hydration but it won’t necessarily lead to healthier skin.
So not true. Our skin contains a good amount of water and hydrated skin is healthier skin.

Black girls don’t need sunscreen.
Yeah no. The sun don’t discriminate, mamacita. EVERYONE needs protection from the sun.

Going a day without washing your face never hurt anyone.
Pfft! Lies! I can’t be the only who has gone to sleep without washing their face only to have pimples greeting me the next morning. It’s good to get in the habit of always washing the face before bed.

Eucerin skincare

My favorite Eucerin skincare products for when my skin needs that extra hydration.

Myth: If you wear sunscreen, you won’t get enough vitamin D.

    • marymay

The sunscreen one makes me so mad. Everyone needs sunscreen!

  • Shirley Monroe

Expensive cosmetics and skincare products are better than drugstore products…yeah not true.

  • Kelly

Oh, popping the small pimples won’t scar your face. LIES! LIES I tell you.

  • Imani

I remember my great aunt telling me that pulling on/rubbing my eyes would give me wrinkles and being terrified to do so for many years. Now I rub my eyes when I feel like it because I realize it’s a beauty myth. Now the only thing I worry about is forgetting I’m wearing makeup and getting mascara in my eyes!

  • Sienna

craziest? mayonaise hair mask. i tried it, and yuck!

  • The craziest beauty myth I ever heard was that you don’t have to wash you brushes!

  • Lauren W.

That there are rules… besides washing your face and drinking enough water, people have different skin needs. I need extra exfoliation and moisture, whereas my guy only needs soap!

  • Good tips! You are right about the whole not washing your face thing…one night and I’m covered with zits! My tip that I’m going by right now is Biotin…its not so much for my skin, but its doing crazy wondrous things for my nails and hair.

  • Janet

Biggest myth? That popping zits makes them heal up and go away! Nuh-UH.

  • Rafia

That using a cellphone gives pimples. One, a cell phone is on your EAR (and I never heard of ear acne) but even if it was touching our face I don’t think we’d just bust out with zits.

  • Mary Happymommy

My mother has lighter skin than me and I have a darker complexion like my father. I definitely remember as a kid my mother saying she had to wear sunscreen and a hat but that I didn’t have to worry about it because my skin is darker. Now I’m the one with the hat and sunscreen, hiding under a beach umbrella.

  • Ada

Bless. Sometimes I feel jealous of people buying expensive skincare products, but then I just slap myself and say that so long as I wash my face, slather on the SPF and moisturizer, and drink plenty of water, my face doesn’t look half bad. =)

  • I think the craziest thing I’ve heard is that your diet doesn’t impact your skin, when it clearly does have a huge effect.

  • Nataly Carbonell

“popping zits will help get rid of them” I don’t think this is true lol

  • tiffany

My boyfriend in high school said that his grandmother rubbed baby pee (from a diaper) on her face to keep it smooth….yeah.

  • Maria J.

One of the craziest beauty myth I’ve ever heard is that you’re not supposed to wear sunscreen if it’s raining or cols outside during the day. Which is not true because during whatever Weather it may be during the day I always wear sunscreen.

  • Kerri

    The ones I always hear:
-Shaving makes hair grow back darker and thicker
-Brush your hair 100 times a day
-You must wash your hair every single day

My hair became so much softer once stopped doing the last one!

  • Cristine

Hmmm … I don’t pay attention to beauty myths much, but when I was a teenager first dealing with acne I thought people putting toothpaste on their pimples was weird. Why!? I thought it would bleach my skin lol.

  • chocopina

i loathe hearing people say that pricier products are superior to more economically priced products. so not true, its all about the ingredients. quality ingredients = quality product regardless of price point.

  • Ann

try lots of different products rather than sticking it out with a product that doesn’t initially seem to work.

  • Kaarin

myth 1: G’ma would always tell me (as I was going thru puberty) to sleep with a bra on so I wouldn’t have saggy boobies when I got older. LoL…I say the sagging is due to genetics :-)

Myth 2: put butter on burns and it wont leave a scar…hmmmm but it sure left me greasy!

  • Fer

A beauty myth i can’t get my mom to understand must be washing the face in the night, or that you only need to wash it and that’s all! I had a pretty bad case of red cheeks, so bad we even thought it was rosacea, but i started washing my face with a different soap (actually TWO different soaps) and now it looks normal. Also, that wearing a moisturizer with sunscreen isn’t bad in the night 😐 i desperately need a good moisturizer for the night but my mom keeps insisting that the one i use for the day is good enough 😐 it’s too heavy!

  • Austin Baroudi

Shaving makes you hair grow back thicker is a pretty ridiculous one.

  • Rachel S.

That lemon juice removes freckles! ha! As a little girl, you do not know how many times I rubbed lemon juice on my face! As an adult, I have embraced them, love them, and realize they very much make me who I am!

  • Jessie C.

The fish pedicure is one crazy beauty myth.

The biggest myth I remember is to use rubbing alcohol on your face! OUCH

  • biggest myth..pluck a grey hair and 10 go the funeral. thank you God that’s a no.

  • Shanelle

Myth: Oil is the best moisturizer for dry skin. I have a funny combo (dry/oily) skin. After years of trying different products, I have realized I should use oil-free moisturizers and the areas that are oily will produce their own oils. I’m currently using Mario Badescu Oil Free SPF 30 Moisturizer. LOVE!

  • The most prevalent one is that it costs a lot to look good. SO not true.

  • Melonie Simples

    Preparation H deflates puffiness. Umm…so NOT true….LOL!!

  • Suzanna Gonzalez

Rub a lemon on your face! My grandma used to say, after the burn & sting was it worth :)

  • Mary W

Myth: You can get rid of cellulite. Fact: You can spend a ton of money on products and still have cellulite. There is no proof or science to back up the claims of cellulite products.

  • Joanna

Cutting/ trimming your hair on certain moon with either grow it longer, thicker etc. Yea did not work for me at all.

  • It’s funny you mentioned the pee rumor. When I was younger I had really horrible acne and so one of my great aunts suggested to my mother to put a “loaded” babies diaper on my face. What the what? So yes putting baby urine was an old wives tale in my family as well and people still say it works. Not sure if it does , and I’m not trying it to see either. I’ll stick with regular facial products.

  • S Carter

I have heard that plucking gray hair when you start to get them will make the rest of your hair turn gray faster. Silliness

  • Carm

That anything can help my undereye circles! They are from very thin skin three generations have them. I will stick to concealer unless I can afford cosmetic surgery.

Truth= Starving yourself is a bad thing

  • Renee

You don’t have to wear sunscreen if you do not normally burn

  • Melissa

You already covered it. I haven’t read all the comments so, I don’t know if someone else mentioned it. But, people of color need sunscreen. I used to work in two different derm offices and one year 90% of one of their patients that had skin cancer were Black and Asian. I’m Black, and also had a skin cancer scare. I am also not surer (and kind of scared) of the oil cleansing method??

  • Esther

If you pop pimples on and around your nose area, puss from it might enter your bloodstream and travel all the way to your brain.

  • Juli Hutcheson

Brushing your hair 100 strokes will make it shine is a myth. It will only break it with that much brushing.

  • Jen

Myth: Women over a certain age should cut their hair short because long hair is aging. I don’t think anything could be more aging than the cut that many women get because of this myth, the short straight sides with the puffy curled top.

I think women should judge for themselves and/or consult with a good stylist for a look that works with their hair condition and face shape.

  • Tessa

Myth: That one application of sunscreen lasts all day

  • I was told to never even TOUCH pimples that are on your forehead in-between your eyebrows. Bcause there is a vein there that runs straight into your brain and if you get any kind of skin infection there, the infection will go straight into your brain and you will die and be instantly dead.
I was tweleve and told this by a worldly 16 year old, so it terrified me for years. Still, good advice on the no pimple popping but terrible on the whole death thing. :-)

  • My mother used to tell me that if I continued to pluck my horribly large (she never said that) Brooke Sheilds-esque eyebrows that they would never grow back. This has always been one beauty myth that I wished would come true!

I currently work as a Beauty Advisor at Walgreens which means I had to watch a variety of videos and do a small series of tests about beauty in terms of skincare, suncare, haircare, cosmetics, etc. And one of the things that reeeeally annoyed me was that, for the question pertaining to how to choose the best concealer for someone’s undereyes, the only “right” answer was to choose a shade one or two shades lighter than their foundation. Now, I’m not saying that that’s a myth per se, but I’d definitely say that it’s a personal choice and the idea that one can’t choose to go with a brightened undereye area or a simply camouflaged one really annoyed me…as does any hard and fast “rule” of makeup. πŸ˜› One of the reasons I really enjoy the “But Black Girls Can’t…” series.
