Essence Celebrates Top Black Beauty Bloggers!

Alriiiiight now!

It’s only right to give credit to some of the pioneers of beauty blogging! Some of my favorite brown girl beauty bloggers were featured HERE on Essence.com. This is a huge huge deal in my book. I mean, ENORMOUS! If you ask me, it is high time that publications start showin’ love to bloggers. We work so hard and kudos from the top dawgs is so in order.

So congratulations are in order to Patrice at Afrobella (she’s one of my mentors!), Erin at Scandalous Beauty (have you checked out her new site? Killerrrr!), Tia from Shake Your Beauty and Auntie Julia (because she so has that ‘favorite Aunt’ vibe) from All About The Pretty.

I have had the opportunity to meet all of these ladies in person (except the fabulous Tia) and their personalities are just as bangin’ as their sites.

Please support them!
And rock on my sisters! I’m so proud of y’all!

Amor de Lacquer: Zoya’s Truth Collection

Welcome to another post of Amor de Lacquer….the series all about nail polish and nail care! Send me your requests, suggestions and ideas to Brittany@ClumpsOfMascara.com.

Your resident Zoya girl has returned with another review. This time I’m reviewing the Truth from the Truth and Dare Fall 2009 collection. It’s a 2 part collection 12 polishes….and I’m tellin’ you…there is somethin’ for everyone.

Seeeee….

Ohhhh, how pretty are these babies? I must warn you…my pictures do not do them any justice. I tried photographing them in the light. And I tried photographing them with my camera’s flash. They still come out pretty funky. In fact the most accurate the colors are in the photos above.

Ready? Let’s go!

Penny is described as a golden metallic shimmer. This is one color I didn’t think I would like when I first saw it. I’ve never been a fan of gold nail polishes on warmer skin tones. But Penny works well for me. In fact, I REALLY like her.

Kalmia is described as a red and gold shimmer. Not bad! Quite an interesting color.

Anaka is described as a shimmery hot pink. Of course I love it. This color is awesome!!! She is pretty dupe-able so I don’t consider her a must have but the nail polish addict in me can never have too many colors like this.

Isla is described as blackened red shimmer have always. I LOVE this color. Isla will definitely be one of my Holiday ’09 colors. Simply stunning.

I am missing Drew and Salma. Would you believe these chicks could not be located in time for the personal photoshoots? They were ready to go for the group picture but disappeared soon after. *sigh*

I like this collection. It isn’t my FAVORITE from Zoya but it’s one of those collections that will appeal to everyone. I think Isla is a total must have. Anaka too. Her hot pink shimmer is fabulous!

I used two coats for each and didn’t have any application problems. I mean….do I ever with Zoya? I used Zoya’s Anchor base coat but I did not use any top coats.

Buy these and more for $6/bottle at Zoya.com.

What do you think? Own any of these? Want ‘em or not so much?

Your fellow nail polish junkie,

Dude, what happened to your hair?

A year ago I looked like this:

And now my hair looks like this:

Talk about a transformation, right?

Has your hair gone through any transformations? Cut it all off? Dyed it purple?

Tell me!

I am sharing this post with my sister site LocRocker.com. To see the official post in which I talked about chopping off all of my hair, click here.

Stay beautiful, my sisters (and brothers out there because I know y’all are reading. LOL!)

Mascara Monday: Lancome Oscillation Powerbooster primer

So I reviewed the world famous Lancome Oscillation mascara primer here. And I absolutely loved it. Is Powerbooster a nice little addition? Or a nice little rip off?

Check out the review….

Lancome Oscillation
Powerbooster mascara primer

Price: 2 out of 5 (around $39.00 )

Packaging (Brush Wand): 5 out of 5
Overall: 4 out of 5

What it claims:

“* Conditions: to fortify and strengthen lashes
* Primes: to prepare and improve lash surface, separates, defines for a perfect smooth lash surface. Vibrations: Wraps lashes with formula up to 360°, to reinforce separation and coverage; formula is coated onto lashes to allow for mascara to glide
* Boosts the appearance of natural lash growth: healthier base
* Maximizes mascara lash results: maximized effects of mascara applied over it – you will see immediate results; Powerbooster intensifies color, longer lasting mascara

Results are spectacular: visibly stronger, fuller, longer day after day.” (source)

The truth:
It’s kinda pricey for a primer…..I can’t even lie. But for extreme EXTREME lashes, I guess it’ll do the trick.

What I loved about it: It has a wand just like the regular Oscillation!

I love this wand! It is great at getting allll of those lashes. The Powerbooster has a bit of a curved look to it. I’m not sure if I damaged it or if it’s supposed to be that way. Hmm, it is also a tad bit more flimsy than the original Oscillation. This isn’t bad per se but I prefer a super sturdy wand for more control. Still not complaining because the bristles are phenomenal!

What I didn’t like: The price still bothers me. I know Lancome is a higher-end brand but $40 on a primer is…..wowsers.

Overall: First, let’s give props to Lancome to rolling out with another innovative mascara. I mean, the vibrating mascara had me at “hello” but a vibrating primer? Now that’s just too cool for words.

Let’s compare the two for a minute….we know that both are similar, if not identical. And if you put them side-by-side, they look that same from those angles too.

See!

So no major changes there. The formula of most primers are usually creamier than a mascara’s formula. Not a bad thing–simply an observation.

The key to primers is applying mascara on top of them before the primer dries. This isn’t too much of an issue with Lancome’s. So yay in that department! I purposely waiting a good 4-5 minutes before applying my mascara and my lashes remained primer-coated without any stiffness.

Now check out my lashes before I applied Powerbooster.

Womp womp…not bad but could be better, right? Check out what I get with one quick run through of Powerbooster on my lashes.

Whoooooa! Not so bad for just a primer right?

And then with one coat of the regular Oscillation, I got this:

I kinda like the look of my lashes with just the primer. HA!

I have mixed feelings about a vibrating primer. On one hand, I love it. It really gets my lashes OUT THERE before mascara application. On the other hand, it seems semi-pointless with the fabulousness that is Lancome Oscillation mascara. Buuuut, is it great with other non-vibrating mascaras. Yes!!

Do you need both the vibrating wand AND the vibrating mascara? I don’t think so. Tell me if you can tell a difference between the above photos and the ones below.

This time I used Oscillation by itself WITHOUT the primer.

Lashes without mascara
(did NOT curl lashes)

Lashes with 1 coat of mascara

Ummm, yeah…..I don’t see THAT much of a difference. So I really am on the fence.

Would I recommend it?: I think Oscillation Powerbooster is a great little splurge if you have the money but I’d much rather spend my money on the regular Oscillation. And even if money wasn’t an issue, I would still go with Oscillation.

Unless of course you’d like to use the primer with many different mascaras.

So what do you think? You want it? Got it? Love it? Hate? Tell me!

A crazed mascara reviewer,

    Sephora

I was casually strolling through Sephora this past weekend and look what I found!

A $6 mascara from Tarte? Hey heyyyy! You know I had to pick it up. I’m not sure how long this deal will last so scoop it up while you can. I also tweeted this sale. Oh yes, girl…I don’t just tweet randomness, I tweet deals!

Sales are a little warm this week but I’m not complaining! You got your eyes on anything?
Here’s to a great upcoming week!

FOTD Friday: Power Words

Hi my darlings,

I am skipping the regular face-of-the-day post for this week. I hope you don’t mind. I thought I’d share some random quotes I’ve been tweeting all week.
I am finding that putting out positive vibes does so much for me as it does for others. You should try it.
Remember….Clumps of Mascara is more than just beauty behind mascaras and blushes. Y’all know inner-beauty trumps all of that.
All of these little quotes came from me (unless otherwise stated) and I decided to toss in some throwback photos just for fun.
Peace sisters and happy weekends to all!

Yes, I know it’s a Monday, but you better find something
to be happy about. It ain’t THAT bad.

We really are in more control than we think we are.
Think about it.

Life is short. Follow your passion. And then figure
out how you can get paid for it.

(heard this on the radio!)

Life ain’t fair. This is a fact. You have the ability to do
WHATEVER you want .This is also a fact. Live it and do it, people.

Unless you’re willing to attempt to alleviate it, stop complaining
about the issues in your life. Put up and shut up or change it!

If you have any words or inspirations, feel free to share them!

And if you’re in the TV watchin’ mood–check out how fierce this little lady is!

Acne Sucks, Part I

Well….doesn’t it?

I can honestly say that I am sick of my skin. It doesn’t like me. And I find this devastating because I’ve been nothing but good to it. I have never been a smoker. I never went to sleep without washing it. I always wore sunscreen. I didn’t clog my pores with greasy foundation or greasy food. I mean, I drink a gallon of water a day! I know all of the rules to having clear skin and alas acne is still taking over.

I know there are many women out there with this issue. And it’s frustrating, isn’t it? Especially when you spent the most of your teenage years and early 20’s with perfectly clear skin! I’ve even spent some days looking at myself in the mirror and crying. Jacked up skin makes a sista feel so unpretty sometimes.

Ugghhh!! But enough of the complaining. I have decided to actively make attempts to get my clear skin back. I know hormones and genes play a part in acne but maybe, just maybe there is something that I can do to at least control my acne. Right now I feel as if it controls me!

And so I have decided to involve my Clumps of Mascara family on this journey of mine. It ain’t an easy one and I’m going to need y’all’s support. Attempting to feel beautiful when you average 2-4 new pimples a day is tough. But the motto of this unofficial series is, “Yes I’ve got acne. I’m still fine though!”

Bam! Laugh it up. It’s funny but it’s true.

Here’s what I’m starting with….

That’s right. That’s some raw acne footage for you. And I’m smiling anyway because despite it all…I am still beautiful.

As are you.

We are going to beat this. Or find ways to deal with it. This mini-series will bring tips from fellow beauty bloggers as well as any submissions from readers we get. Feel free to share your story! I will keep you updated with any new products I am using.

We ‘gon be alright, sisters. *group hug*.

The official song of the unofficial series is High School Musical’s “We’re All In This Together”. Don’t act like you’re surprised. Ya’ll know I’m a cornball so it only makes sense. LOL!!

EcoTools has more than brushes now?

Ya’ll know how much of an EcoTools nut I am. I have just about ALL of their brushes. Every time I get an email about brushes for newbies, I recommend EcoTools. It is SO hard to find brushes that are not only that is not only affordable but are great in quality as well. Aaaand….they are green! That is something we can all love.

Well well well…my EcoTools fam is expanding and bringing us body products. I got my hands on the body splash and lotion. Are they up to par? Or should EcoTools just stick to brushes?

Blooming Planet Body Mist

Price: 4 out of 5 ($7, not bad, not bad.)
Packaging: 5 out of 5
Overall: 5 out of 5

What it claims:
“This Body Mist instantly transports you to a blooming botanical garden with a bright and fresh floral scent. Refresh your natural wellness with this captivating blend of elegant floral blooms. Smells great and feel great, inside your world and out.”

The truth:
Not bad…not bad at all!!

What I loved about it: It lasts for quite some time for a body mist.

What I didn’t like:
It’s a tad bit strong so a good spritz or two just do you good.

Overall: I like body mists. But I haven’t purchased one in quite some time. I am more of perfume and body oil kind of gal but I think body mists are wonderful for traveling or right before bed when you want a nice light scent.

I don’t know what it is about me and why I feel like I need to spritz a mist a dozen times. LOL….it’s like I feel incomplete if I don’t spray it a good 5 times or so. So dramatic, I know but this mist really does go a long way. A good pump or two should do you good.

I’m serious. More than that and people will smell you comin’ a mile away. And true to their claim, EcoTools keeps it simple on the ingredient list.

I totally recommend this mist if you are desirous of nice and clean scent.

Sustainable Softness Body Lotion

Price: 4 out of 5 ($7.99)
Packaging: 4 out of 5
Overall: 3 out of 5

What it claims:
“For those seeking intense moisture, look no further than this body lotion that is 98% from nature. Sustainable Softness features nourishing shea butter, which easily absorbs into skin and leaves it feeling silky and smooth. Skin will instantly feel hydrated and sustain your softness.”

The truth:
Hmmm, I can dig it!

What I loved about it: Of course I love the smell. It is very light but has a nice shea butter-y scent that I like.

What I didn’t like: The bottle is a little wonky. It is a little hard to squeeze but I would imagine it will really become difficult when I get low on product. Not the biggest problem. Just something I noticed.

Overall: Way to go EcoTools. I am so proud of you and this lotion. It’s not bad at all! I can be quite the Ash Queen when I want to be. I’m talkin’ elbows so white that it looks like I was playing in flour.

I’m being dramatic again but I like that EcoTool’s lotion can tackle my dry skin. And it is a rich lotion that does on nice and thick.

What’s in this baby, you say?

I hope that in the near future we see butters from EcoTools. They would be perfect for winter! For right now, though, I’ll continue being BFFs with the lotion.
Yay to go EcoTools!! I am glad to see them branch out from just brushes to bring us the fabulousness that is body care products. Who knows…..maybe in the near future you will bring us lipglosses and eyeliners–all green and affordable. The thought alone excites me!
What do you think? Impressed at EcoTool’s newest venture? Interested in trying?
My other EcoTools posts:
You can find these products, including a hand cream and body wash at Walgreens nationwide!
