Aquaphor at the Orlando Runner’s Classic AND a giveaway!

A few weeks ago, the 2013 Orlando Runner’s Classic went down at the gorgeous Orlando World Center Marriott. I’ve attended several conferences at the World Center Marriott, but Aquaphor so graciously paid for my stay the night before the race and I could not have been more grateful.

Orlando Runners Classic

This was my first time hearing about the Runner’s Classic and while I didn’t get a chance to run it this year (oh boy…wait for the story), I will certainly be back next year. I’m no runner but I have run a few 5K’s and I love participating in the ones that are low pressure and have a “fun” aspect to them. The Runner’s Classic is perfect for families of all ages because there’s a little something for everyone. There’s the Move Free 8K, Jif & Smucker’s 5K, Carnation Breakfast Essentials Great Start 2K Walk and Publix Children’s Fun Run. The entire atmosphere is just light, far from intimadating and…fun!

To prep me for the race Aquaphor not only comped my race entry but I was also gifted with an Aquaphor Training Kit. Florida’s weather has reverted back to the high 80’s but last month, it was chilly and the ointment was perfect for slathering on the skin to prevent it from getting chapped during the cooler weather.

Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to run because I suffered severe food poisioning hours before the race. I woke up at 3am with the worse stomach cramps of my life. I compare every bout of pain to contractions and whoa…those cramps were worst than contractions. The pain didn’t subside until shortly after the race started but I managed to make my way down to help cheer on the other racers and to stop by the Aquaphor booth.

Next time, y’all. Next time. Buuuut, on a good note, Aquaphor is so graciously giving me the chance to give away some goodies. One lucky winner will score the following…

Aquaphor

Healing Ointment
Lip Repair
Lip Repair + PROTECT

Don’t hate me but I know some of y’all are out there dealing with some crazy cold weather (meanwhile it’s 85 degrees today in Florida) so these Aquaphor products will definitely come in handy.

Good luck! And if any runners have tips on how to train, let me know. I plan to run a decent amount of 5K’s (and maybe a 10K) in 2014.

This giveaway is closed and the winner was selected. Congratulations to Brenda in South Carolina.

Makeup Wars: 5 Indie Nail Polish Brands That You MUST Try

Indie polishes

My Makeup Wars sisters and I are back and we’re showcasing some of our favorite indie brands. By indie, we mean brands that you probably won’t find in Sephora or UTLA. These brands are typically smaller businesses and they don’t always have a Marketing Department or Sales Department. They are run by real men and women and sometimes out of their own homes. They do it all!

I don’t own much indie makeup but I certainly have my fair share of indie nail polishes. Indie nail polishes have taken the nail polish blogosphere by storm. These brands are giving us nail polish lovers unique shades and finishes and I am so here for it. The bigger brands are obviously keeping their eyes peeled because I’ve seen them come out with shades AFTER an indie brand has released it. That said, check out some of my favorite indie brands!

Cult Nails

Well, obviously Cult Nails would be first. Maria is a good and supportive friend of mine but even if she weren’t, I would still love this brand. Her polishes are AMAZING! She puts serious thought behind each shade and prides herself on stepping outside of the box. I’ve watched Cult Nails grow overnight and I am just so honored to know the woman behind this awesome brand.

My favorite Cult Nails polishes: Flushed, Deal With It, Lamestain and Charlatan

Literary Lacquers

Gotta love a brand that combines 2 of my loves…books and nail polish! Amy reached out to me to see if I wanted to feature her brand on Clumps of Mascara and how could I say “No”? For one thing, I love when nail polish brands seek diversity. And the fantastic polishes are just the icing on the cake.

My Favorite LL nail polishes: More Like Fire Than Light, Green Gables, As The Waltz Was Ending

Cirque

I can’t remember which nail polish blogger prompted me to stumble on Cirque’s nail polishes, but man, I am hooked. I love everything about this brand. The name, their adorable bottles and the shades. Ooooh, the shades! I like how Cirque is always releasing something unexpected. While many brands follow trends, Cirque does not and I love that about them. This one is nail polish brand that always keeps me on my toes.

My favorite Cirque nail polishes: Tibetan Nights, XX, Dark Horse, Cornotion (wish I owned it but it’s $48!)

A. England

I fell in love with A.England at first glance. I don’t know much about the owner or her story behind the brand but I know that she has perfected holographic nail polishes. And this is no easy task. Holographic nail polishes are my absolute favorite and it’s so hard to find good ones. A.England has a slew of gorgeous polishes but they rock at creating holographics. I mean, amazingly so!

My favorite A.England nail polishes: Lady of the Lake, Tristam and St. George

Nailventurous

I believe Floam was my very first indie nail polish. It holds a special place in my heart because um, well…it looks like the legendary Floam! I’m not sure if Nailventurous launches new polishes anymore but when the lady behind the brand was regularly launching polishes…WOW! I loved the uniqueness of these polishes. Also, while other brands have colors similar to Floam, I believe it was Nailventurous who did it first.

My favorite Nailventurous nail polishes: Floam, Sunny Floam, Bumblebee

Keep Those Teeth Beautiful: Tips for Preventing Tooth Enamel Erosion

Keeping the pout pretty is more than just staying up on the prettiest lip shades. This post is brought to you by Darla Scheidt, the Marketing Director for Grove Dental Associates  and she’s going to give us the skinny behind a lovely thing called…tooth enamel erosion.

We’ve been hearing a lot about tooth enamel and what happens when it wears down, or erodes. While most of us are aware of tooth decay, the whole enamel erosion idea has taken some of us by surprise. Though there are many products available to help strengthen tooth enamel, did you know that there are quite a few things that you can do to prevent erosion from happening? Even if you’re already seeing signs of tooth enamel erosion, you can still start now to prevent further damage.

Avoid Consuming the Following

There are quite a few things that wear down our tooth enamel and, unfortunately, a lot of them are our favorite foods:

Soft drinks – If it’s sweet and has bubbles, it’s probably not good for your teeth. The problem isn’t just the sugar, it’s the acids used in making soda pop. If you must drink it, try to stay away from clear, citrus sodas as they typically have higher acid content than their darker counterparts.

Energy and sports drinks – Though we may need these for a pick-me-up, they are as full of acids as sodas. This includes those energy shots and the drinks that athletes use to replenish electrolytes.

Citrus fruit – This makes sense, as citric acid levels are high in oranges, tangerines, lemons and limes. Don’t avoid these completely; rather, try to mix them with other fruits or foods so you can still get the vitamins.

Vinegar – As you may know, vinegar is used as an ingredient in a lot of foods to balance the sweetness since it is acidic. It’s so potent that many people use it to clean their homes! Try to avoid foods with a lot of it, such as salad dressing.

Carbohydrates – These aren’t only bad for your waist, they’re terrible for your teeth! If you eat a lot of refined carbs, you’re eating a lot of sugar, which is adept at wrecking your teeth. Try balancing your Pasta Alfredo with a nice salad (minus the vinaigrette dressing!).
There are some other causes of tooth enamel erosion. Try to avoid having dry mouth—if you need to, keep sugarless chewing gum or bottled water on hand. If you grind your teeth in your sleep, you can wear down your enamel. See your dentist because he or she may have a suggestion for a small mouthpiece to keep you from doing this.

Acid reflux disease (GERD) can also cause enamel erosion. If you have this condition, make sure to discuss options with your doctor as it can also cause problems with your esophagus.

What to Do If You’ve Already Had Enamel Loss

First of all, eliminate as many of the causes of tooth enamel erosion as you can. Quit the sugary foods, sodas and any acidic foods and talk to your doctor about other medical conditions that could affect your enamel.

Using toothpaste with fluoride is good for maintaining and strengthening your enamel, and make sure to floss frequently. There are also products on the market, specifically rinses, that may help strengthen your tooth enamel.

Your dentist may have some suggestions for you, which may include prescription solutions to strengthen your enamel. There may also be some procedures that can help strengthen your teeth.

Bonding is a procedure that has become popular in recent years for cosmetic reasons; it’s responsible for many of those bright, white “Hollywood” smiles. The process involves covering your teeth with a substance that strengthens them and prevents further damage, helping you to avoid tooth loss.

Crowns have been around for a long time and will protect from further damage; they may be an option for you if there has been some loss of the bony material of your teeth.

Vaseline Lip Therapy Rosy Lips – Blinged Out!

I love brands like Vaseline. They are both predictable and unpredictable and I LOVE that. I mean yeah…they’ve been making the same product for many many years. And the product hasn’t really changed! You can get regular ole’ Vaseline practically anywhere. While they stay consistent with that, on the other hand, they’re gettin’ all fancy with releasing spray lotions and colorful Vaseline for lips and all. I mean, dang. You are just too fly for your own good, Vaseline.

On a gloomy very rough day, I received this glorious jar in the mail.

Vaseline Lips

Can you even deeeeeal???? I can’t. I just can’t. Now we’ve seen the bejeweled Vaseline Lip Therapy jars before but how much prettier is she all decked out in her rosy tint? I’m in love. I had to hide it from my Mom and sister because they were itchin’ to snag my jar during Thanksgiving.

I use the regular Vaseline at night because it traps the moisture in my lips and keeps them moisturized at night but wow, I didn’t see a tinted Vaseline a comin’.

Vaseline Rosy Lips Therapy

Bejeweled Vaseline Lip Therapy

It makes sense though! Now to be quite honest, I didn’t see much of a rosy tint in my lips when I applied this.

Vaseline on Lips

I reckon this would do better with a lip liner. The Vaseline Lip Therapy Rosy Lips is also scented! It has a rose/vanilla/berry scent and I don’t know….I found it to be really heavy on the floral side and I’m perfectly okay with rockin’ scent-free Vaseline.

Rosy Lips swatch

Still. You can’t tell me that this baby isn’t gorgeous. The un-bejeweled Vaseline Rose Lips is at drugstores nationwide for only $1.99.

Vaseline Lip Therapy

Her very luxurious older sister is $45 at New Beauty at Fred Segal, Santa Monica or you can call 310-394-8509. But only until Christmas Day 2013 because after that, this limited edition shiny mama of a Vaseline jar will disappear.

Meanwhile I’ll be putting mine behind a glass window. Yeeeeep.

Zoya Satins nail polish collection

I’m glad I swatched this collection before  all of my nails went and broke on me. Figures. When I make very little effort to take care of my nails, they do just fine. But the second I want polish them on a regular, they all break on me. Totally a first world problem, I know, but it sucks. This collection, however…doesn’t suck and I was so grateful to get a press sample of it.

Zoya Satins Collection

Very appropriate shades for a winter collection, right?

Zoya Claudine

Claudine is a striking dark meteorite gray metallic. Applying this baby was a dream and I achieved full opacity with only one coat. And it’s such a stunning color. I’ve seen gray metallics before but never one that has such a beautiful and shimmery finish.

Zoya Channing

Channing is a coppery red metallic and something tells me that one of my favorite fashion bloggers, Channing in the City, would love this shade. When I think of Thanksgiving and fall, a shade like this comes to mind. Very appropriate for the season!

Zoya Mason

Mason is an exciting red violet or “Fandango Pink” metallic. Don’t ask me what Fandango Pink is. I’m far too lazy to Google it, but honey, what a beautiful shade! I don’t get too excited over pinks but this is the kind of pink that I can roll with.

Zoya Maria-Luisa

Maria-Luisa is a pretty gold cellophane accent topper. Of course, this shade is intended to be layered over another nail polish color. I applied it over Mason and it’s just so pretty!

Zoya Giovanna

Giovanna totally photographed somewhat off (my camera sucks at really capturing teal-ish shades) but this emerald green metallic is deep, rich and awesome. It also stains the nails so be sure to use a base with this one.

Zoya Neve

Neve is a sapphire blue metallic and at one glance it looks blue and at another, it looks like a sparkling purple. Such a pretty shade. My mother, being the purple lover that she is, would looooove this one.

Another winner from Zoya. I don’t have any complaints. Each nail polish applied beautifully and I’m loving the unexpected shades. You can snag this nail polish collection from Zoya.com for $48 for the entire collection or $8 for each polish. Check out my review of the Cashmere collection, the other collection that launched with the Satins collection.

That M.Steves Exfoliator Makes My Skin Happy. Very Happy.

My skin has been a wreck lately. And I really have no one to blame but myself. I ditched dairy for almost a year but Thanksgiving did me in and I went on a dairy-overload. Same with gluten. Oh girl, trust me…I wish I could eat dairy and gluten with no problems, but the fact is, I can’t. My body just does better with keeping both out of my diet. I’m not sure if dairy is playing a huge part in my skin’s craziness, but all I know is, after going to town on my husband’s ah-maziiiiing macaroni and cheese, my skin has morphed into something that my 15-year old sister can relate to. It’s a mess.

And I love y’all too much to take pictures of it but I figured now was as good time as any to give to try out M.Steve’s Reviving Exfoilator .

M.Steves Reviving Exfoliator

I received a sample of this a while back and it has been sitting on my beauty bookshelf for quite some time. While I usually like to wait 4-6 weeks before I review something, I couldn’t wait to share this with y’all. This stuff is awesome. I mean, check out the stats…

-No synthetic dyes or fragrances
-Vegan
-No parabens
-No petrochemicals
-No phthalates

And then there’s the list of the things that it DOES include:

-Rose Hip Seed Oil
-Microdermabrasion crystals
-Walnut shell powder
-Glycolic acid
-Dead sea mud
-Fruit enzymes

M.Steves

The exfoliator is fantastic. It feels like something out of a spa. This 2-in-1 scrub not only works as a microdermabrasion treatment that really massages those pores, but it also acts as an alpha hydroxy acid peel. I’ve used it both ways and found that it completely transforms either way that it’s used.

As a microdermabrasion treatment: Easy does it when using this exfoliator on the skin. The microscopic crystals do so well at gently scrubbing the skin. It’s easy to scrub too vigorously so I found myself repeatedly saying “Go slowly, go slowly…” After rinsing, my skin felt reinvigorated and ridiculously soft.

Scrub in pot

As an alpha hydroxy acid peel: After applying all over, I left the exfoliator on the skin for 7-10 minutes and rinsed with warm water. I didn’t notice much of a difference until I woke up the next day. My skin seemed brighter, tighter and smoother.

Scrub on hand

I’m a fan, M.Steves. I’m a fan. Is this exfoliator worth the $48 price tag? I would say so. A microdermabrasion treatment at a spa could easily cost close to $100 per treatment. Having the option to do this at home and get the same results is just…amazing! And what do I use to follow up this exfoliator? That lovely bottle of Ultra-Nourishing Boost.  LOVE!

Pantene’s Truly Natural Custard and Serum

This sponsored post is brought to you by the ever so awesome POPSUGAR. A while back I had the opportunity to review the shampoo and condish from the Pantene Truly Natural hair line. And for the most part, I liked everything. To be honest, it’s so much easier to like hair products when my hair is only 2-3 inches long. I’m lettin’ the hurr grow out a bit longer so I’m sure my opinions will become a lot more rigid, but for now I haven’t really run into a hair care product that I really hate.

DSC_1853

Which is why I have nothing but good things to say about any of these products. But I’d really like to focus on the Defining Curls Styling Custard and the Shine Serum + Argan Oil. But first things first…

I ain’t got no curls. There’s no shame in my game but my hair really only has a defined pattern when it is cut close to my scalp. Since I’ve got a few inches on the wig, my curls are more like…fuzz. This is a true story, girls. I always find that custards don’t work well on my hair when it’s longer.

The Defining Curls Styling Custard promises to define curls (obvs) and add shine. I’ve never gotten any added shine from jelly-type products but I stayed optimistic with this Custard. The key to really get this stuff to work is to make sure to use it on wet hair. And by wet, I mean saturated. I used a dollop of the custard on my freshly washed hair and found it to really work well with my curls/fuzz. My hair didn’t feel crispy and hard hours later and I didn’t have any flakiness going on. Because nothing sucks more than flaking styling products.

DSC_1857

And then there’s the Shine Serum with Argan Oil

DSC_1864

My hair is dry as the Sahara so I love any and everything that has to do with an oil. Especially argan oil! I loved how lightweight this felt. Far too often serums can be insanely greasy but this wasn’t too bad. I found it worked best when I’d rub a bit all over the dome and then cover with a head scarf at night. And whoever thought to put it in a spray bottle is a genius. Love that idea!

So yes, I’m a big of a hair snob but I do have to appreciate Pantene’s attempt at catering to the natural haired girls of the world. I am hard to please but I think the line will work well for the average natural haired girl who is looking for products to cater to her kinks and curls. Fragrance-wise, I have a have a hard time wearing hair products with loud scents (and these scents aren’t exactly soft) but hey, I feel that way about alllll hair and skincare products. Overall, though these budget-friendly hair care products will likely work well for many of my girls with natural hair.

The following FTC disclosure: “Disclosure: This post was sponsored by Pantene through their partnership with POPSUGAR Select. While I was compensated to write a post about Pantene Truly Natural, all opinions are my own.”
