Congratulations to the Reader Appreciation Week winners!

From the bottom of my heart, I really appreciate all of the support from Clumps of Mascara readers and supporters. From a comments to emails, ya’ll don’t know how much it means to me. Reader Appreciation Week was my THANK YOU. And I know everyone couldn’t win but I loved seeing the enthusiasm about the giveaways.

The best has yet to come so to keep the enthusiasm going on, I will continue to have random giveaways without notice.

That whole, “Giving is better than receiving,” thing….it’s kinda true.

Congratulations to the following ladies!

Mabel in the Dominican Republic Judith in Colorado Juanita in Missouri Sara in Sweden Xuxa in North Carolina Monique in Michigan Ashley in D.C. Aimee in Illinois Sarah in California

….and a special thank you to my youngest sister Imani…..

…she randomly selected each and every winner! A tough job for a 10-year old, but my girl held it down.

Thanks again for a successful Reader Appreciation Week. The next one will be bigger and better!

And a quick tag! Milan from Milan Rouge tagged me with the Sexy Blogger Award. Thanks sis!!

Rules: List 5 things that are sexy about yourself and then tag 5…

1. My kindness. Sounds lame but in a cruel world, I think that genuine kindness is sexy!
2. My legs. I love how sculpted they look.
3. My lips. They are full and soft!
4. My confidence. It has gotten me a loooong way.
5. My humor. Or lack thereof some may say. I take pride in being a cornball and somehow I think it’s sexy!

….I’m horrible at tags because I always seem to re-tag the same people. So I’m tagging YOU!

What makes you sexy?

Newbie Post: Cheap Brushes 101

Ahh yes….it’a another post for “Newbie News”. Brushes!! One of the most common questions I get is, “Where can I get good and cheap brushes?”

Giiiirl, lemme tell you. I know some may say that MAC Cosmetics brushes are the best and that else nothing is comparable, but I don’t think that’s true. While I do love the quality and overall performance of MAC brushes, I think that there are other phenomenal brushes for half the price.

Say hello to my babies…
(from left to right)

-EcoTools retractable Kabuki brush ($7.99)
-Eyebrow grooming comb and brush (I don’t know where I got this from, hmmm…)
-Sonia Kashuk blending brush ($7.99 from Target. Get it HERE)
-Studio Tools concealer brush (around $3 from Target)
-Sonia Kashuk small eyeshadow brush ($9.99 from Target. Get it HERE)
-Studio Tools eyeshadow brush (around $3 from Target)
-The Body Shop lip brush (under $10 from The Body Shop)

First up….

Ecotools retractable Kabuki brush

EcoTools, the company and products will always have my heart. I have yet to be disappointed with any of their products. This Kabuki brush is absolutely wonderful. It works great for an all over face powder and if you squeeze the bristles, it functions well as a blush brush. Got sensitive skin? Don’t worry….these bristles are so amazingly soft. Using this brush is such a treat. And it’s under $10!!

Eyebrow grooming comb and brush

I don’t know where I got this baby from but I know it didn’t cost me an arm and a leg. For my naturally bushy brows, this is must! Yes, my comb lost a few teeth…lol, don’t yall laugh at me!

Sonia Kashuk blending brush

Oh yes! This blending brush rocks! It is super soft and does a good job at….blending. With a light hand you can get a nice distribution of color on the crease. With a heavier hand, you can bang out a sexy smokey eye. I also find that it is good at giving me a nice wash of color under the browbone.

Studio Tools concealer brush

Honestly….I don’t see why you would even need to spend an insane amount of money on a concealer brush. This is the only one that I have ever had and it works perfectly! I depend on concealer since I don’t wear foundation and I love that this brush applies smoothly. Rinse it out thoroughly and it can be good at foiling (used wet) shadows or pigments. Heyy!! Yall know I love multi-purpose products.

Studio Tools eyeshadow brush

Any time I wear eyeshadow, I am usually applying it with THIS brush. For it to be so cheap, it applies shadows flawlessly. I usually take this one with me on my travels.

Sonia Kashuk small eye shadow brush

I think this was one of my first brushes! And I’ve still got her around. This brush is perfect for ladies with smaller lids. Or perhaps you like applying shadows on the inner-V. This brush gets it done!

The Body Shop lip brush

This was my first (oh wait….it’s my only) lip brush and I got it on sale at The Body Shop for a good $5. I love it for when I really want to make lips the focus of a look. It allows me to blend my liner and lipstick as well as applying MAC Tendertone balms on the lippies.

There’s my little guide to cheap but amazing brushes. My entire stash of brushes?

The travel brushes are stashed in the traveling case. They apologized for not being able to make a guest appearance. HA! I don’t see myself investing in any more brushes…..at least not for awhile. If you have good and long-lasting ones, you won’t need to!

Do you have any of these brushes?

Do you normally spend a nice chunk of change on your brushes or do you like ‘em cheap?

[EDIT]
Readers/Twitter fam also suggest the following cheap brushes:

-E.L.F. brushes
-Coastal Scents
-Crown Brushes (co-sign!! I have some of these that I love…they are so cheap!)
-Sigma Brushes

Amor de Lacquer: Simple Nail Art

Welcome to another post of Amor de Lacquer….the series all about nail polish and nail care! Send me your requests, suggestions and ideas to Brittany@ClumpsOfMascara.com.

Okay, I will be honest.

I’m really not IN to nail art. I can admire it all day. I may even play around with it a little but at the end of the day, I really prefer regular ole’ painted nails. Call it the conservative side of B if you want. I attribute my sentiments to nail art to having gone overboard with them in high school.

I had nail designs for EVERY holiday back in ‘tha day. I had looks for Christmas, Valentine’s Day and I even got my nails done in gold and green for my high school graduation.

Now and days, I don’t dabble into the nail design so much. In fact, the most I will do is this:

*snore* I know.

And even though I have products like these in my stash…

…I rarely touch them. I even did a nail art tutorial for Amor de Lacquer week, but trust me when I tell yall it is a JOKE. Instead, I found a beautiful YouTube-r who does beautiful nail art designs and her video is easy to follow along.

….and if you really want to see some dynamic nail art, check out my girl Nikki over at Ask Me Whats.

Whatcha think? Are you into nail art or not so much?

Polish Pretty,

Mascara Monday: Max Factor Vivid Impact mascara

Happy Monday! If you celebrate it, I hope that you all had a wonderful Resurrection Sunday! The dawn of Easter always REALLY reminds me that it is Spring time. And the weather here in Central Florida says just that.

Thank you ALL for your support and involvement in Clumps of Mascara’s Reader Appreciation Week. I know everyone couldn’t win something but it was exciting to see all of the entries and overall excitement in the giveaways. Yay!!

This mascara is one that has been requested several times. And I am just now getting to it. Yikes!! This post will be picture heavy because I wanted to show each detail of this groovy mascara. Is it really vivid or a bust?

Max Factor Vivid Impact mascara
(blue & pink)

Price: 4 out of 5 ($10 from Ulta.com )
Packaging (Brush Wand): 4 out of 5
Overall: 4 out of 5

What it claims: “Dual color mascara that combines a traditional solid color base coat with an iridescent highlighting top coat to add a hint of color to lashes. Delivers sophisticated, bold and unexpected eye looks.(source)

The truth:
Pink lashes? That’s unexpected alright!!

What I loved about it: I love the versatility of this mascara. You can create many different looks. Whether it be the pink highlighting top coat just on the tips, all over, or just on the lower lashes. Such fun!

What I didn’t like:
For whatever reason, the mascara was a bit hard on the lashes.I mean….harder than most mascaras.

Overall: If you are lookin‘ for a mascara that will give you a “different” look or add a pop of color, this is it! I had so much fun playing around with mascara. I mean, think about it….pink lashes? How fun is that? As far as the performance of the mascara, I found that the blue basecoat gave me good volume. I’m talkinMax Factor Volume Couture-kinda volume.

The pink highlighting top coat, however, isn’t the same consistency as the mascara. It is a little thinner than a creamy eyeshadow. It takes quite a few strokes to get the color ON the lashes. And even then…it may appear a little streaky at first. I would imagine the color would really POP on lighter lashes but since my babies are dark brown….it is a little hard to see the pink.

Check out the wands:

The defining basecoat

The highlighting topcoat

Lashes without mascara
(did not curl lashes)

Lashes with 2 coats of mascara

First, I am applying two coats of the defining basecoat in blue. You can hardly tell that it’s there, uh? But I do get a good amount of volume and length.

Next I applied the pink highlighting top coat with the tip of the wand.

You can see the pink up close and personal. But what about outside?

So it really does work. I love how it looks with a purple eyeliner. Reader Sabrina was really the inspiration behind me finally purchasing and reviewing this mascara. Look at how beautiful the gold mascara looks with her pretty blue eyes!

Hotness!!

Would I recommend it?: Everyone should have one of these babies in their mascara stash. Fun-kaaaay!! Speaking of “funky”….count how many times I use that word in the video review. It’s pretty funny.

Enjoy your Monday, family!

Beauty Event: Johnson’s Body Care Cause Party

It’s Saturday!

…..and very rarely do I post on Saturdays but I just had to let y’all know of an amazing event coming up. Johnson’s has asked me to host a Johnson’s Body Care Cause party!

I am thrilled! On Sunday, April 26 around 3 p.m. a few of my girlfriends (and some fellas too) will come together to marvel over Johnson & Johnson goody bags, play a few games of Taboo and just enjoy each other’s company. The real purpose of the party is support a charity here in Orlando, Dress for Success. This was the charity that I selected and I am honored to be able to give to an organization that helps disadvantaged women.

Singer, Ashanti, has also gotten in on the Cause party fun! A few weeks ago, I was able to chit-chat with her on a phone conference with other beauty bloggers and pretty much found myself wanting to be Ashanti’s BFF. She is so down to earth! She too hosted a Cause party and gave us fellow hostesses some tidbits. One which included inviting sexy men over to give massages to the ladies! Okay honestly…..how can you not love her?

Ashanti told us her favorite Johnson’s products which include the Johnson’s 24 Hour Lotion and Wash and Baby Oil gel with Shea & Cocoa Butter.

Ohmigoodness, you all have not lived until you have tried these products!! The Body Wash alone is such a spa-like treatment. You NEED them in your life.

I will definitely be taking pictures of the party. How exciting is this! I love being able to incorporate two of my passions…beauty and helping others.

Now that’s pretty!! Have a wonderful weekend, fam!
