Beauty…and the Male: An Open Letter

CLUMPERS,

I want to thank you all for the love on my first ever blog entry. Frankly, I wasn’t sure if I would get calls for an encore or pumpkins thrown at me! But, I am excited about a new opportunity to bring a different view and perspective to what COM is already? So, after kicking it around with COM’s Founder and EIC, I figured we would do like the song says, “give the people what they want!” This is your chance! Write in and tell me what YOU want to see? A monthly review of a male product? Q&A column done bi-weekly? Tell me what YOU want to see from the newest male beauty blogger!

Guest Blogger: Hairstyle Trends for Summer ’09

Summer is the perfect time to try a new style. Warmer weather means more style freedom, so don’t be afraid to try a new trend. Spice up your current look with a celebrity-inspired ‘do.

Bold, Dramatic Color
Jennifer Hudson and Meagan Good Hair
Celebrity Inspirations: Jennifer Hudson, Meagan Good, Chrisette Michele, Keri Hilson
Summer is a great time to try a new, lighter. It doesn’t have to be as dramatic as Christina’s, but a good dye job can get you feeling like a new woman. This season, choose a deep brown with auburn highlights like Meagan Good and Jennifer Hudson, or go for a touch of golden blonde like Rihanna or Keri Hilson. A few highlights, especially around the face, will brighten your complexion.

Crop Tops
Estelle and Chrisette
Celebrity Inspirations: Estelle, Dawn, Chrisette Michelle
The reign of the weave is over. This Summer it’s all about the cropped ‘do. For those worried that their face “can’t pull of a short look,” just look at variety celebs who have gone short and how fab they look. From Chrisette to Estelle, the short looks great!

Ethnic Styles
Ciara Cornrows
Ciara, Alicia Keys
Protect your hair with corn rows or braids. It’s a high fun, low maintenance hair style perfect for a beauty on the go. Who says “ethnic” styles can’t be chic.

Severe Bangs
Solange and Tyra Banks Bangs
Celebrity Inspirations: Solange, Tyra
If you’re not quite ready for the big chop or dramatic color, then a blunt bang might be a perfect compromise. Bangs will give your look some drama, but keep you looking work appropriate.

Center Part
Tyra and Alicia
This Summer, keep it sleek and sophisticated with a center part. The seemingly simple look will amp up your sex appeal. To keep hair silky smooth, I recommend using Biolage Smooth Therapy Smoothing Serum while straightening.

Tweezers Anonymous

Hey Clump beauties… Its Tamar your resident try any product once type of gal! I’m bringing you my latest find. If you don’t check your local Marshalls for the discounted beauty products you really should. I think you’d be pleasantly surprised. Check it out….

I have entered a 12 step program for my addiction. No its not drugs or alcohol…. Its tweezing!

I don’t know how this started or when it became a problem but my brows look sparse and lonely for fullness and sophistication. A couple of weeks ago while checking the cosmetic department at Marshalls I found this…

It’s so cute and when I saw the brand Anastatia (eyebrow artist to the stars)I got excited! It claimed to save my brows from my plucking hands! Look at the case it comes in…

This kit includes stencils (to help you figure out your brow shape)

Brow comb and brush duo (for blending and maintaining) Brow powder for brunette and blond women and enhancing serum to fill in those spots that just wont grow….

Now the serum is something like clear mascara at first glance…

You apply it day and night after you cleanse your face. I’ve been using it faithfully for about 2 weeks. I can’t say that they are growing out but I can say that my brows seem full of life now.

In case you were wondering yes it did come with a list of 12 steps and my favorite is #3 I made a decision to turn my will to tweeze over to the care of tweezers anonymous. After research I found that this kit retails for 55.oo at Sephora. (I paid 29.99 at Marshalls)

So am I alone? Is there anyone else out there that is guilty of over plucking/waxing? If so what steps have you taken to correct your brows? Please share!

NYC Mobile Post

Hey family!

I’m just shootin’ you some quick photos of my time so far here in NYC. I so wish I could spead all of my photos out instead of ALL of them ending up at the top.

Ah well…

All pictures were taken with my Blackberry so if they look a little fuzzy….that’s why!

First photo is of New York City, of course! I was hangin’ out at a cafe off of 42nd and Lexington. Or something like that. Ha!

Next up is a darling little flower ring that I got from a wholesale shop for only $3. Actually…..I got A LOT of little goodies for only $2-$3. Blame those purchases on Miss. Yaya from I’ll Be My Own Judge; fellow beauty/fashion blogger.

My hair is LOVING Carol’s Daughter’s Hair Milk. I will do a formal review on this one but I just wanted to share with my family how much I love it. I am also supporting a mani I got done at Avanti Spa with Adina from KraseyBeauty.com. Nail polish fans…can you guess the color? Hint: it is a OPI color. And you thought it was Zoya’s Malia, uh?

Can you believe I only brought TWO palettes with me on this trip. What can I say? The NARS Bridal palette and Urban Decay (omg, what is it called again?) palette have everything I need! And as far as that Dove deodorant. Wow!! Stay tuned for a review and giveaway of that baby!

….and then of course, it’s me throwing up the deuces. Why do people do that? And why do you feel like you have to wear shades when you do it? Lol…craziness!

Today I will be at Saks off of 5th Avenue swooning over the work of celebrity make-up artist Pat McGrath. Right after is the Blogger Preview at The Makeup Show. And after that? Who knows? Sushi? Thai? Shopping? I’m up for anything!

I hope that you all are having a great weekend!!

Special love to my girl Tamar is has been holding down Clumps beautifully!

Stay beautiful,

Brittany

Beauty and……the Male

A Clumps of Mascara first: Beauty from a male’s view.

Check out what Kenneth has to say about “The M-word”.

When it comes to societal norms, one thing that I have never quite grasped is why it is largely socially unacceptable for men to take care of their bodies—inside and out. I am thoroughly convinced that one of the reasons that women, in some circumstances, do not end up with men that they are happy to be with is because some women really don’t know what they want in a man. On one hand you say, I want a “manly man” who exhibits all of the macho images in the media. Then you turn around and denigrate those men who do dress nicely and take care of themselves in special ways. You leave men to wonder, “which is it?” What I find even more curious is that some women who say that they want a “manly man” feed into this stereotype.

What I have never quite grasped is why any woman would want to be with a man who is less than clean, neat and well put together? Someone, somewhere has come up with a list of items that “manly men” are not to engage in. And it seems like every day the number of “unmanly” things increases. To date, here is just a small list of what women have told me manly men should not do:

-Pluck or manage their eyebrows

-Shave their underarm hair or chest hair

-Get a facial, pedicure, or massage

-Use chap stick on their lips

-Applying lotion daily

-Have soft hands

-Dress nicely

-Smell nicely

-Eat a salad (yes!)

The list could certainly go on, but you understand what I am getting at. Now, ladies, close your eyes and think for a moment about the “manly man” who is a result of not taking care of himself by doing none of these things. He has eyebrows going every which way, hair growing out from under his arms, his nails are jagged, his lips are chapped, his skin is chaffed, and he is an overall disaster. Now pucker up to kiss this Adonis of a man!

The point might be made that men, themselves, also play a role in this quandary. I do not disagree. Once I was reading a book on etiquette and a male friend of mine called me the dirty M-word,“Metro.” I find these men to be just plain jealous, or “haters”. Many of these men do not want to take the time or energy to be neat, clean and dress nicely. Why? Beauty doesn’t just happen after all, you have to work at it!

Let me be clear on this. I am all for men playing their natural role in society. Yes, there is such a thing as taking it over the top on beautifying oneself as a man. However, we have taken it too far as a society when we refer to a man as the dirty “M-word” for exfoliating his skin or using lip balm. We, as men, must play our part to not allow the stereotypes to keep us from taking care of ourselves. Exfoliating your skin says nothing about your manliness, your sexual orientation or your ability to play the natural role that God has ordained men to play in our society. “Clump” readers, the paradigm shift begins with you. Begin to celebrate and appreciate those men that do take the time to take care of themselves, and hope that you end up with one!

So ladies Do you want your man groomed? When he takes the initiative do you call him the “M” word? Would he take offense if you did?
