Sista Show-Off: Pieces & Blessings

Welcome to another post from the Sista Show Off series! In this series I like to show some love to other companies, blogs, businesses, organizations or just regular ladies like myself who are paving the way for women everywhere! Let me feature you! Shoot me an email at Brittany@ClumpsOfMascara.com.

I have always been an enormous fan of jewelry. See….most women like diamonds and pearls (I’d like them more if I could afford them, ha!) but I don’t mind funky jewelery. You know the kind where people say,

“Ohhhh girl, your ring is so pretty! I’ve never see anything like that.
Where did you get it from?”

Yeah love the uniqueness that a great deal of my jewels have.

Pieces & Blessings has the following….

-Earrings
-Loc jewels
-Rings

Each piece of jewelery is hand made intricately and with love.

And I must say….working with Samantha has been absolutely wonderful. I received my shipping notification the SAME day I ordered and my package was in the mail within 2-3 days. And yall know I’m not a big fan of waiting for packages to arrive.

Samantha’s Story of how Pieces & Blessings came about:

“Well, I started when my lil girl decided that she wanted to get locs! I was so proud of her. I asked her why did she want them and she said that she wanted to be closer to her heritage. Very impressive for a (then)10 year old. Well, when she did begin to loc I wasn’t able to find many cute things to adorn her hair. I didn’t want her to begin to equate natural with not cute or plain. I wanted her to continue to feel like the same lil girl. That’s when I began to make small jewels and then I made her earrings to match. People began to make comments and request pieces … : ). I am self taught through my love for working with my hands, love for my daughter, fashion, and natural hair.”

Check out my purchases!

I LOVE this ring…I get so many compliments on it. It was only $7.

And my baby locs are supporting jewels too. $5

Right now Samantha is offering FREE SHIPPING!!! Stroll on over to her site and see what looks interesting to you. Rock on, Samantha! You womanprenuer, you!

Peaces & blessings,

Beauty Initiative: The Red Pump Project

Hey family!

I’m not sure if yall know this about me but one of my biggest passions is awareness. And that’s with anything. I like to keep you all abreast of what’s hot in the beauty world but I also like educating any and everyone about any and everything beyond beauty.

Seriously, I strongly believe that education can really save lives.

And so…I can’t say how honored I am to participate in the Red Pump Project
“Wait….’hole up, B. What is the Red Pump Project to be exact?”

Per the website:

“One of the main purposes of National Women/Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day is to encourage women to take a proactive approach in their sexual health. One of the biggest ways that you can do so is to know your status. Nowadays, many health organizations offer HIV/AIDS testing at little to no cost to individuals, and some places even offer rapid and/or needle-free testing.”

Now how can you NOT want to support and be a part of something like this?

I don’t care who you are……
Where you are from……
What you do….

GET TESTED!

Tell you friends to get tested.
Your family members.
Strangers on the street.

Any and everyone.

This disease is taking our our loved one….especially our women.

I have decided to wear my red pumps today in honor of this special day.

Hmmm mmm…my Nine West pumps from DSW. And I also decided to rock a red lippie as well.

This is Stila’s lipstick in Dominique.

…..and let’s disregard the skin, mmmkay? I am still trying to get that breakout under control.

As should you with your HIV status.

You can find out more about this project at The Red Pump Project blog.

Stay healthy family,

Beauty BOGO: L’Oreal HIP’s Color Presso

I just had to pop my head in for a quick second to let you all know about some of the great beauty deals swarming in drugstores this week. I suggest you jump online and check the ads or snag the ad from your Sunday papers because the deals are INSANE this week. I won’t be indulging too much as I am saving up for my trip to Los Angeles at the end of the week.

One deal that I felt was worth mentioning was the Buy 1, Get 1 free on all L’Oreal nail and lip products at Walgreens.

That means that you can get one of these for $12.99…

…..and then get another one! Did you miss my review on this baby? Check it out HERE. It is definitely worth playing around with. Does anyone own any of the Color Presso’s?

If there are any beauty deals that you think I should check out this week, let me know!!

Enjoy the rest of your Monday, family

Mascara Monday: Maybelline Lash Stylist Washable mascara

Happy Monday!!

Did everyone have great weekends? I had a ball hosting a “Beauty 101″ class with a group of 16-year old young ladies. I even put together a little booklet that I will share with the Clumps of Mascara family later on this week. And the weather in Tallahassee, Florida was absolutely divine! The nomad in me is itching to make another big move but I have to admit….it’s going to be difficult to move to city that isn’t as warm as Florida is this time of the year.

Boy, I sure have been on a Maybelline mascara tip for a while, uh? I can’t help it! These older mascaras may be diamonds in the rough and I may not know about it. Is the Stylist one of them? Or just a big bust?

Check out the review…..

Maybelline Lash Stylist
Washable mascara

Price: 5 out of 5 (around $6. I got it as a BOGO buy from Walgreens )
Packaging (Brush Wand): 4 out of 5
Overall: 5 out of 5
Bold
What it claims: “Exclusive V-Styling mascara comb sculpts and thickens lashes up to 65%. (source)

The truth:
Aww look! It’s got a baby comb. How cute! In all real seriousness….this is a pretty good mascara. Maybelline is truly one of the best in the mascara making department, IMO.

What I loved about it:
Obviously the wand is pretty cool lookin’. And not only that it is pretty effective in getting ALL of your lashes out there.

I find that it is easier to use than the traditional mascara wand. It coats each and EVERY lash with ease.

What I didn’t like:
This may be the klutz in me, but I ended up getting a TON of mascara on my lower lash line when trying to apply this mascara. I mean, it’s insane…of course I have learned how to manipulate the brush a little better but my first few applications were a hot mess. LOL, literally.

Overall: To be honest…I kinda wanted to hate this mascara. LOL, seriously. I feel like a broken record when it comes to singing praises to Maybelline’s mascaras. But it’s not just simple adoration for these babies. As the saying goes, “Proof is in the pudding” and I hope that you all see that I’m not exaggerating with the before/after photos and videos. Simply put..this mascara is GREAT! Per its claim, it DID thicken my lashes and gave a crazy amount of length. The volume junkie in me would have liked a little more volume but I think that this is great for every day wear. It is easy to remove, doesn’t irritate or flake and is just a pleasure to work with.

LOL…like it’s a co-worker or somethin’. On to the photos.

Lashes without mascara
(did not curl lashes)

Lashes with 2 coats of mascara

I should probably mention that you really only need one coat of this mascara. Two isn’t at all necessary and I only applied that second coat out of habit.

I like mascaras with the comb! Clinique High Definition Lashes mascara has a wand like this and I found success with that baby too.

Would I recommend it?: Sure do! Especially if you find that your lashes are wild and crazy like me. The comb will set them straight.

Have you ever tried this mascara? A fan? Didn’t find success with it? Do you prefer mascaras with combs? I would love to know your thoughts!

Always,

FOTD Friday: Smokey Eye Attempt #3

Finally! It’s Friday….and after skipping FOTD Friday for 2 consecutive Fridays, I am finally back and in action. My face is still taking its dear ole’ time clearing up. I have become quite used to these break-outs and it can take a little over a month for them to clear up. But once they do, my skin is back to being flawless. Or somethin’ like it. HA!

Okay, so this FOTD Friday is an interesting one. And one that I dedicate to my good friend Jasmin. This is actually only my third attempt at the…..

SMOKEY EYE!

Brace yourself for my first attempt.

Whoa!! Ain’t that something? This was taken in the summer of 2007. When I FIRST got into make-up. Since then I have only done one other smokey eye in the Fall of 2007.

Gothic City, USA, right? I actually didn’t mind this look. Yes, it’s a little scary but with the curly hair, I was rockin’ it!

And I haven’t rocked a smokey eye since then. Have I rocked it this time around? Or is it another bomb? Either way….I enjoyed doing it and welcome any tips as the smokey eye is one look that I still feel like I have yet to conquer.

FACE:
MAC Studio Finish concealer in NW45

EYES:
Too Faced Shadow Insurance
MAC Rondelle e/s (highlighter)
MAC Waft e/s(lid)
MAC Sketch e/s (crease)
MAC Carbon e/s (outer-V)
Urban Decay 24/7 eyeliner in Zero
Maybelline Sky High mascara

LIPS:
Stila Lip Glaze in Peach Cobbler

This smokey eye is probably the best one I have done so far. For once it doesn’t look so dark! But I am still tweaking it. I have NO idea why such an easy concept has always been so difficult for me. Yikes! But I’m gettin’ it. Any smokey eye professionals out there? Please drop some tips or tricks.

Or are you strugglin’ like me?

I am off to North Florida this weekend, family. But I will still have the handy dandy Blackberry so don’t hesitate to email me at Brittany@ClumpsOfMascara.com for random questions, comments or just to say, “Hey B!”

Stay beautiful,

[EDIT]
How could I FORGET to mention my girl Kia from Yummy411 in this post? She is the one that actually set me down and talked me through a smokey eye look. Her looks are sheer perfection and I would have never been able to start understanding how to do a decent smokey eye had it not been her professional assistance. Thanks sister.blogger.friend.make-up artist-guru lady!
