Beauty Review: Organix Hair Products

NOTE: When it comes to hair care reviews, my opinion best fits women who have natural 4B-type hair. I have no way of knowing how well this product will work on other hair types and textures. Find out more about hair types here.

Ahhh yesss, Organix products. I remember first seeing these in Target and immediately being intrigued.

What first drew me to Organix products were their SULFATE AND PARABEN FREE labels. I am extremely picky about what I put in my hair and products with sulfates and parabens in them are definite no-no’s.

Now that I think about it….my loctician would be rather disappointed in me if she knew I was using products without her approval. BUT, something tells me that she would be okay with Organix Vanilla Silk Shampoo and Conditioner.

Uh oh….a closer look at the ingredients forces me to think otherwise.

I am also “supposed to be” -cone and alcohol free.

HOWEVER, my hair seemed to like both the shampoo and conditioner. The shampoo didn’t suck the moisture out of my color treated hair and the conditioner replenished what little was removed. I am surprised!

Because my locs are only 4 months old, I am not supposed to use conditioner as to prevent slippage. I was careful and only applied it to my scalp.

The result?

Shiny and happy locs!

I’m impressed! I think I’ll stick with all-natural method while trucking along on my loc journey but I highly recommend these to other ladies seeking moisture in the hair department.

Organix products are found at most drugstores, Target and Wal-Mart. Have any of you tried any of these products?

Whatcha think?

Beauty Event: Johnson’s Body Care Cause Party, part II

Last weekend I had the opportunity to host a Johnson’s Charity party. I first blogged about the event HERE. It was more than what I ever thought it would be. Aside from having good eats and laughs, the party was able to raise a good amount of money to donate to Dress for Success. You can find out more about this awesome organization here.

I hosted it at my house it would NOT have been as successful as it was had it not been for one of my greatest friends, Ariel. She really helped me out! Here she is sitting by the sign-in table.

Yummy food and drinks…

The sign-in sheet with donation jar. And can you believe EVERYONE actually wore the name tags. Heyyyy!

A total of 16 ladies strolled in and out of my place and I was unable to get pictures of everyone. Shucks! We played Taboo, Apples to Apples and before I knew it, I was giving away a good 30 bottles of polish. Talk about Spring cleaning! My friends were excited to receive my unwanted goods and I was happy to get rid of products that I didn’t even use. Of course everyone had to get get each “deal” confirmed. No way was I giving up Essie’s Mesmerize and China Glaze’s Shower Together. LOL!

Fellow University of South Florida alumnae, Ariel and Ellis rummaging through my blue and green polishes.

Another college BFF…Krystal and her sister Alexis. Many thanks to them for driving from Tampa to attend my little shindig.

Even the law school kids found time to stop by to chit chat and snag a goody bag.

We spent a good two hours screaming and shouting over Taboo. I am a HUGE game board junkie and Taboo is one of my favorites.

The party started at 3 p.m. and people didn’t start leaving until around 8:00 p.m. But they didn’t exactly go home. We all went to…

The fair! Where everyone ended up picking on me because I was too chicken to get on…..everything. LOL! We had such a wonderful time. I mean, honestly….how many times are you able to rally up some of your favorite gal pals, have them donate to great charity, talk beauty and end the night with cotton candy and greasy vinegar soaked fries?

I’ll say it was some party! Thank you to all who attended and a special “thank you” to Johnson’s for making this possible.

A Mother’s Day gift by Carol’s Daughter

Mother’s Day is right around the corner…..and while I know most of us don’t want to get all caught up in another commercialized holiday, if anyone deserves a special day, it is Mom!

Well, at least my Mom. She is greatest. Even when I pulled some crazy stunts.

-Like when I came home with tattoos and piercings after my first year of college.
-And when I changed my major….three times.
-Oh…and when I moved to the other side of the country.

Mom is my biggest fan and supports so many of my ventures. She deserves only the best. But what do you get a woman who seems to have everything? And what she doesn’t have….she makes?

Carol’s Daughter’s Pearls Gift Set

What says this gift set:

Carol’s Daughter Pearls Gift Set allows you to experience Pearls in two forms—a fragrance and a crème. When layered together, the bergamot, lemon, and verbena tinged fragrance lasts longer and has a more vibrant scent. What it is formulated WITHOUT: – Parabens – Sulfates – Synthetic Dyes – Phthalates – GMOs – Triclosan

This is right up my Mom, the herbalist’s, alley. She loves fragrances sans the bad chemicals. And this is probably one of the BEST scents for Spring. And come on girl….you just HAVE to love the packaging.

For $49.50 you get the Pearls fragrance with body creme. My Mom will absolutely LOVE this. And since she is an active reader of Clumps…I know she is somewhere shrieking over ONE of her Mother’s Day gifts.

Love you, Mommy!!

Anyone own this or plan on getting this for that special Mom, Grandma, Aunt, Mother-in-law, friend or sister? You can find out more about this darling little gift set here.

Because Moms deserve it!, Inc.

Amor de Lacquer: Zoya’s Summer 2009 La-Di-Da Collection

Welcome to another post of Amor de Lacquer….the series all about nail polish and nail care! Send me your requests, suggestions and ideas to

Leave it to my nails to start acting a fool around the time these fabulous Summer nail polish collections are being released! I have been breaking nails left and right which has been making swatching virtually impossible. I have managed to grow them out so I can finally show off 1 of 2 Zoya Summer 2009 collections. Brace yourself…these polishes are so not for the weak!

But first…let’s have a photoshoot with the sexy six.

Note: Photographing neon polishes is craaaazy difficult. These polishes are a lot more vibrant in real life. My photos do not do them justice.

First up, Renee. This color is described as an ultra bright pink and honey…it is just that. I know this photo makes it look like it is a “safe for work” pink but it really isn’t. In real life is it is bold and the perfect summer pedi color.

‘ello there Pippa! Yep yep….it’s another yellow. Yellow nail polish is SO the color of the season. Pippa ain’t too shabby. As with most yellows, I endure some kind of application issues, but I didn’t have a problem with this one. And it only took two coats with minimal streaks. Loves it!

Say hello to my favorite polish out of the bunch. Paz is seriously the brightest color I have EVER seen. This ultra-bright neon orange polish had to force its way off of my toes. I rocked this on my toes for a good two weeks before it started to chip. If there is one color you need from this collection, this one would be it. It dries with a matte finish but with a good top coat, you can literally blind people with your toes. Seriously…

Dita is a soft dark pink berry creme. In my opinion this is the most “average” color of the bunch. Non nail polish wearin’ folx….this one is for you. Long gone are the days when colors like Dita make me swoon. Dita topped with glitter, however…..

America! I love the name of this polish. I mean…this is the ultimate red. I’m not a fan of red polishes but I can get down with this one. The creme finish is absolutely flawless. This is the kind of red that I wasn’t allowed to wear as a little girl. Wait—was I the only one who couldn’t wear red polishes until high school? LOL!

It’s my second favorite color of the bunch! Heyyyyy Ali! This color is so BRIGHT! It is an ultra bright neon pink that I found itself on my nails AND toes this past weekend. Ali is like the big sister of Renee. This is definitely a must have too!

Go Zoya! I am loviiiiing this collection. I didn’t have any application issues. Zoya polishes always apply flawlessly for me. I applied two coats for each color and I didn’t seem to have not one problem child. Pippa was a little tricky but that is the case with most yellows.

Mascara Monday: L’Oreal Extra Volume Collagen mascara

Happy happy Monday! As always….I have another mascara review! This happens to be L’Oreal’s newest. I received a total of 9 requests for this mascara.

Do we have another L’Oreal Voluminous winner?

Check the review…..

L’Oreal Extra Volume
Collagen mascara

Price: 3 out of 5 (I got this for $9.99 at Walgreens but you get can it from Target for $6.49)
Packaging (Brush Wand): 4 out of 5
Overall: 3 out of 5

What it claims: Opps…I threw the packaging away! *cries* And we all know how well these drugst0re brands are at updating their sites. NOT!

The truth:
I mean….it’s okay. Just average. Nothing spectacular.

What I loved about it: I liked the wand…easy to use with minimal excess mascara on the brush.

What I didn’t like: It didn’t give me enough volume. I mean…it was just mediocre.

Overall: Okay…so basically this mascara is supposed to use collagen technology to plump your lashes up 12x their natural volume. 12x is a little dramatic but aren’t all mascara claims? To be honest….this mascara didn’t really impress me. Granted I wasn’t completely turned off by it but it didn’t make me want to throw a party either. It is an average mascara with no spectacular results.

Lashes without mascara
(did not curl lashes)

Lashes with 2 coats of mascara

Would I recommend it?: Not really. I think that there are other great mascaras out there. I would only snag this one if it was on sale.

*yawn* See how excited I am about this baby? Peep the video review:

Has anyone tried this mascara yet? Am I the only one missing the spark or is it really just average? What say you?

A crazed mascara reviewer,

The Best and Worse Sunscreens

Happy Sunday, family!!

Ah yessss….just yesterday I took a nap on the grass. There was an Earth Day celebration in downtown Orlando and the weather was absolutely beautiful. I ended up knocking out by the lake. I didn’t anticipate falling asleep with UV rays banging on my skin but my skin was protected! I’ll do a review on my favorite sunscreen later but for right now check out this Total Beauty article listing the best and worse in sunscreens.

What’s your favorite?
The Best and Worst Sunscreens

See which products will prevent your skin from looking lobster-like all summer long

Whether we like it or not, sunscreen is a must for all of us. And according to Heidi Waldorf, M.D. of Waldorf Dermatology & Laser Associates in Nanuet, NY, we need “an SPF of at least a 15 daily.” No one wants to spend all summer slathering on sunblock, but with these reader favorites maybe it wont seem like such a chore.

See sunscreens

No. 14: Ole Henriksen Invigorating Night Gel, $45 average member rating: 6*

Why: Readers complain that it “is too orange” and “the brush bristles break off and shed…”

No. 3: Philosophy A Pigment Of Your Imagination SPF 18, $30 average member rating: 5.5*

Why: Readers didn’t like the “thick and sticky” formula and hue, which “turns my skin yellowish and made me look like I was sick…”

The Best: No. 14: Dermalogica Super Sensitive Face Block SPF 30, $40.50 average member rating: 9.2*

Why: Readers like that it is SPF 30 and that it is “not greasy, doesn’t clog pores or cause breakouts.”

Honey Pot: Mascara Winner & Reminder

Hey chicas! Someone’s Friday is going to get a little bit better!
Remember THIS Mascara Monday where I reviewed Revlon DoubleTwist Volumizing mascara? Oh yeah, girl…..I SO wasn’t diggin’ that mascara. Many of you questioned why I even gave it a “2” when it really deserved a “1”. True, true…but I liked the uniqueness of a wand. Whether it worked or not is another story.

I digress….

One lucky lady will win this mascara and provide us with her own written review (with pictures). I am excited to get a mascara review from a different point of view. According to the winner is:

!!Mary Joyce!!

Congratulations, darling…shoot me an email at and we’ll get that mascara to you. Can’t WAIT to see your review.

I still have one more giveaway going on. Click HERE to get details.

Enjoy your weekend!!
