Beauty Challenge: Politically Pretty

Yess! Another Beauty Challenge! Every once in awhile (okay, we’ve only done it once) us beauty bloggers like to unite through challenges. Our very first challenge was an 80’s challenge in which we had to create an 80’s look.

The turn-out was amazing! 14 bloggers participated and we all had a wonderful time sharing our creativity with each other and our blog readers.

The time has come again for us to bring forth yet another challenge!!!

In the wake of one of the most historic presidential elections ever, we challenge you to a political-esqe FOTD (face of the day). Whether you want to represent suffrage/voting rights, a party of your choice, democracy or just the political times… interpret that theme in a make-up look. Be as creative as you want, use any products and don’t feel as if you have any limitations. Do whatever comes to you! Don’t forget the details and explain what your sentiments/reasonings were behind the look.

Leave your name either in this comment box or over at Yummy411 so that we know you are participating.

Deadline to post FOTDs is Friday, October 3, 2008!!!!! That means participants not only post their looks on October 3, but also provide links to the pages of other participants as well. You can see an example of this by the “80’s challenge” link above.

What if I don’t have a blog?

No problema! You can still participate. Of course you would have to email your photo(s) and statements to us. And then we would showcase them in a separate post on October 4, 2008. Please make sure to send us your photo(s) and snippets by Thursday, October 2!!!

What if I am not in the United States?

Still no problem….show us an FOTD sportin’ your country’s colors and/or designs. Don’t forget to tell us what everything means so we can learn a little somethin’ too.

Get your brushes out and VOTE!!!!!

[NOTE]:
Can I just say how excited I am about this? I don’t know whether to dress up as Michelle Obama (j/k…kinda) or paint an American flag on my face. *shrieks* Can’t wait to see what everyone comes up with!

Brown and Blushin’ Series: Purple on the cheeks?

I know, I know. I haven’t done a post from this series in quite awhile, uh? I’m so sorry, chicas. I’ve been behind on keeping you lovely up on blushes from my brown skin beauties. I am still enamored with blush and my collection has grown from 3-5 blushes to almost 20! I’m tellin’ you….when I like somethin’ I really like it! And while I haven’t purchased a blush in awhile, I still enjoy revisiting everything from my NYC blush in Desert Rose to my Stila Convertible color in Rose and Grandma’s trusty Fashion Fair Warm Sand blush.

But what happens when a lady loves what she loves but still wants to try something different?

THIS!

Who remembers MAC’s Mi’Lady Mineralized shadow? This baby came out last fall and I honestly haven’t touched it in quite awhile. While I think it is divine on the lids this beautiful combo of mineralized goodness doesn’t quite fit in with my daily work-appropriate looks. But I still wanted to see what I could do with ole’ girl.

I mean, look how pigmented she is…

So you know what I had to do, riiiight? I grabbed the trusty MAC 187 brush and…

Who would have thought that this color is pretty dern decent on the cheeks?

A little too sparkly for my liking but perhaps with a lighter hand and a cleaner brush I would have ended up with a beautifully flattering purple cheek that doesn’t LOOK crazy.

I was a little heavy on the cheeks but that didn’t stop me…I pulled out my purples quad and…

Yes, I swirled the brush in all 4 colors. The results?

(say hi to the crater on my face!)

Still a little too MUCH so I definitely want to play around with purples on the cheek but with a lighter hand. And yall know me, I ALWAYS get carried away….Mi’Lady on the lips, B? Really?

Wait is that my washcloth in the background that I forgot to crop out? Clumps of Mascara strikes again! LOL!

So what say you, people? Would you rock purple cheeks? Or on the lips? Hmm…maybe I will refine this look a little more and present it in this week’s upcoming FOTD Friday?

Whatcha think?

Mascara Monday: CoverGirl Lash Exact

Happy Monday, pretty people! I hope that you all had wonderful weekends. Between checkin’ out Tyler Perry’s newest movie, shoppin’ at Ikea (OMG, I loooove that place), studying for the GRE and workin’ out, I was able to stay pretty busy. And I doubt I will ever love Mondays except for no other reason that Mascara Mondays. Yessss!!! Check out what we have this week.

CoverGirl’s Lash Exact Mascara

Price: 3.5 out of 5
Packaging (Brush Wand): 5 out of 5
Overall: 3.5 out of 5

What it claims: “No clumps on the brush means no clumps on the lashes for a DEFINED and LONG lash look.”

The truth: Hmm, it’s not bad. I didn’t get any clumps so it stands up against its claim!

What I loved about it: I really like the brush….but then again, I’m becoming a fan to the 3D wand since I’m learned how to use it efficiently.

What I didn’t like: Ummm, I would have liked if it gave me a little bit of curl. But I got nada. And even after I pumped the lashes with an eyelash curler a few times it was still didn’t a hold a “decent” curl.

Overall: I know this mascara isn’t new. It was reader requested by a lovely reader. Hey Claire! CoverGirl has since released LashBlast so LashExact is a bit on the “throwback” tip. But can I say something? Um….the wand, beautiful! You all know that I am a sucker for packaging so it was pleasant to have this baby girl in the mascara stash. As far as performance, hmm….it’s okay. I was able to achieve a good amount of volume. Length was pretty decent too. I didn’t get much of the flaky-flaky and was impressed with how well it stood up all day. Snagged this baby for about $7. Not too shabby.

Would I recommend it: Hmmmm….if you have something decent, stick with it. If you want to purchase this mascara just for experimental purposes, go for it. Otherwise….I say let it slide.

FOTD Friday: Les Nubians

Happy Friday!! Gosh, this week was not too hot for me so I am excited for Friday. And I am diggin’ this week’s FOTD. It was surprisingly effortless. The ladies of Les Nubians were quite the inspiration!!

I love everything about this look. The dark burgundy lip. The springy green/blue eyes. The hot pink cheeks. And those mysterious white dots. I mean—wow. I tried to mimic this the best way I could but nothing does the original justice.

When I play around with theatrical dramatic looks I pull out something that I neeeever use:
…..foundation!

Well, not quite foundation. Bobbi Brown’s Tinted Moisturizer is as close as I get to using actual foundation. I forgot how wonderful this stuff is. It created the perfect canvas for the look. Along with that I used:

CHEEKS:
MAC Full Fuschia (PRO)
Bobbi Brown Shimmerbrick in Brownie
EYES:
MAC Shimmermoss
Maybelline Unstoppable eyeliner
Dior Diorshow Mascara
Milani brow pencil
NYX White eyeliner

LIPS:

MAC Matte Lipstick in Bing

Gosh, lining those dots up was NOT easy.

..okay, I got a little too ANTM on that last one.

Me with a more “me” look.

I love love looooved doing this. It took me all of 8 minutes and my Sonia Kashuk fluffy brush was responsible for the wonderful wash of color on the lids. I want to try to do this look on someone else.

What do you think about this look? A little much? Creative? Funky? Would you try something like this?

Happy Fridays, mijas! Enjoy your weekends and stay beauuuuutiful!

Beauty Review: Citrus & Spice All Natural Body Scrub

FACT: Your Head Newb here is a fan of bathing.

Granted I hope you ALL like to bathe but what I mean is I truly enjoy soaking in a hot bubble bath after a sweat fest at the gym or particularly stressful day. As a matter of fact, as I type this post on my lunch break I am already looking forward to a nice warm bubbly.

But what can take an all ready blissful experience to the next level? An exfoliant to scrub off of those dead skin cells to reveal beautifully smooth and luscious skin. And not just an kind of exfoilator. Many contain hash ingredients that do more bad than good to your skin. Some are too harsh while others aren’t grainy enough.

Face it, finding a great exfoilator isn’t all THAT easy.

Let me introduce to you:

INGREDIENTS Ultra-Moisturizing, All Natural body scrub by M.B. Carey & Co. Ltd.

Everybody say “Ohhh” and “Ahhhh”! The line-up is as follows.

Citrus & Spice, Lavender/Mint, Patchouli/Pine – MSRP: $40.00 – 19 oz. /538.5 gm. Tub

Citrus & Spice, Lavender/Mint, Patchouli/Pine – MSRP: $6.00 – 2.5 oz. /70.8 gm. Jar

I used the Citrus & Spice and wa-wa-wooow….I would have never thought of actually using cinnamon in a scrub but it works out beautifully. I used it in a bubble bath and wanted to just sleep in the tub for hours. It was wonderful!

Is it just me or does this look….edible? Yum!

The scrub consists of only a few products: coarse sea salt, mineral oil, petrolatum, cinnamon, clover and Sweet Orange essential oil. I’m finding that using SALT in an scrub as far better than sugar because not only dissolves but it isn’t sticky. See the dissolving action?

SCRUB ALONE

SCRUB with a bit of water

I was a little weary with the scrub containing mineral oil as mineral oil can be a property that clogs pores. However, Mommy the herbalist said that its use in small doses is not harmful. I found that I didn’t even need to apply lotion after using it so I definitely understand its purpose in the scrub!

Overall: A+ from B. You too should pamper yourself with this and other wonderful products from M.B. Carey & Co. Ltd. Visit their website at:

Wednesday Ramblings

Hi gorgeous people! I am a bit behind this week and in some crazy pain because of this cavity filling but I couldn’t let Wednesday (it’s not Friday, yet?) go by without droppin’ you the skinny on one of the gift bags at Fashion Week. Check out this beaut.

Are you drooling yet? Apparently those attending the Philip Lim show at the tents in Bryant Park (at New York’s fashion week) were able to cop this lovely parting gift. Inside is:

AVEDA Dry Remedy Shampoo

AVEDA Dry Remedy Moisturizing Treatment Masque

Aveda Dry Remedy In

NARS Duo Eyeshadow in Persepolis

NARS Blush in Penny Lane

NARS Lip Gloss in Chihuahua

NARS Eyeliner Pencil in Kitty

NARS Perfecting Powdered Sheets

NARS Mini Body Glow

Wow!! Amazement, uh? Has anyone tried any of these products? That Lip Gloss in Chihuahua looks like it would create a beautiful nude lip.

And wow…I found my inspiration for this week’s FOTD Friday.

Can you dig it? Les Nubians are just beautiful and the make-up action is just out of this world. Continue having a wonderful Hump Day, peoples. To keep up with my fabulous life (or lack thereof, hehe) follow me on Twitter.

Stay beautiful!

Beauty Review: Broadway Real Life Nails

Happy Tuesday, lovelies! As I mentioned yesterday, this week I am going to be cranking out some beauty reviews. Everybody say “yaaay”!

*crickets*

Mmmkay, let’s move right along. My darling little sister has decided to review Broadway’s Real Life Nails. I really don’t know how the sample made it to my Mom’s house and not mine four hours away, but I’m sure Ms. C didn’t mind.

Courtney, say “hi”!

Wonderful! Now on to the review:

Broadway Real Life Nails

Okay, so my sister is doing her little make-up thingy on her website and it’s doing really well…

***Snaps for her***

Okay, so back to me—because she is doing so well, people send her things for her to review .Well, some stuff got send to my house. **Big Mistake*** I asked her if I could try the Broadways Nails.

When I first got it I was like, “Come on…who is gonna wear the stick on nails when you could go and get yout nails done?” but as a new college student I know that “the cheap way is the best way” LOL! These nails are really cute and easy to put. If you are putting them on correctly then you won’t get the glue all on yourself. Aside from being really cute they last a good little minute I wore them to a party this weekend and got many compliments because they look like an actual full-set.

I love these nails! They are great for a week or two but not something I would wear like a full set. What’s great about them is that do not interfere with everyday activities like driving or washing dishes. I mean, I did poke myself in the eye and it hurt like heck, but I guess that was just me being clumsy.

Only my sister would pose with the butterfly on her hand. LOL! I’m lovin’ it. So what do you folx think? I seriously thought that packaged nails was so “8th dance-ish” but I am shocked at how beautiful they look on Courtney’s nails. Not bad for under $7, uh? As a lady who does her own manicures, this is something I would consider investing in. Although I do love solid colors on my nails moreso than french manicures.

What say you, chicas?

Mascara Monday: Wet N Wild’s MegaVolume Mascara

Happy Monday, people!!! I hope that this upcoming week brings you a ton of joy. Especially if you are one of those fortunate people to be in New York City for Fashion Week. I’m not there, but I am staying up on all of happenings through Twitter. Loves it!

Okay, soooo…this mascara is definitely one of a kind. Check it:

Wet ‘N Wild’s MegaVolume Thickening Mascara

Price: 5 out of 5 (it was a $1.99..seriously the cheapest mascara ever)

Packaging (Brush Wand): 3 out of 5

Overall: 0.5 out of 5

What it claims: “Turn it up! Incredible lash-thickening mascara formula dramatically enhances the volume of even the most soft-spoken lashes-and babies them with conditioners, too.”

The truth:

Well, uh….at least you aren’t paying TOO much for it.

What I loved about it:

I’m the type that tries to find the silver lining in everythiiiiing. But honey, I can’t even lie to you this time around. I didn’t love anything about this mascara.

Overall:

Oh geez, where to start? Well um….it has this smell. Problems 1-4. And while the wand is that of an average wand, I find that when trying to apply this mascara it was just one big glooby mess. After applying one coat, my lashes seemed to laugh at me. I didn’t notice any type of length or volume. After two coats, I noticed a little somethin’-somethin’ but it was very subtle. In attempts to give this mascara a fair chance I wore it all day only to find it flaking with every glance in the mirror. And by the end of the day I didn’t even need to use make-up remover for it had decided to magically remove itself by---disappearance. Yes, I’m not kidding you. The mascara just disappeared from my lids. Now if that ain’t innovation, I don’t know what is!

Would I recommend it:

If I had to choose between this or wearing my natural lashes, I would definitely choose the latter. Shoot, I’d rather pour sand in my eyes than wear this stuff here. Okay, that was beyond dramatic, uh? LOL!

Has anyone else tried some of Wet N Wild's mascaras? Did I do something wrong or do you really get what you pay for? Your thoughts....

....please excuse the lack of videos/pictures for this Mascara Monday. Ya girl was a little swamped this past weekend. But don't fret---this week Clumps of Mascara is going to be featuring a ton of reviews! Stay tuuuuned.

...and stay beautiful!
