FOTD Friday: Hot Pink Runway Look

It’s Friiiiiiday! And I’m glad because this week was a yucky week for me. With Tropical Storm Faye dumping a ton of rain and me getting very little sleep because of my obsession with watching the Olympics, I was a little “out of it” this week.

But leave it to Friday to put a little pep in my step….a smile on my face…and a twist in my hip. I made that last one up because I figured it would sound okay since it rhymed. Kinda? Maybe?

No? HA..okayyyyy.

Today’s FOTD Friday is definitely a runway look. I got the inspiration from visiting Sephora.com and came across this banner.

I was really loving the pink winged liner so of course I had to try my version of it.

But first….who would have thought Wet ‘N Wild would have such a pretty Kohl eyeliner?

Beautiful!! I will definitely be picking up some more of their pencils. The staying power isn’t half bad. It was only $1.99. I don’t know why I’m acting like Wet ‘N Wild is new. It’s funny now some of us beauty folx try to get all siddity and get to purchasing liners for over $10 when the cheap ones work pretty well.

Ya know?

I wanted to focus on 3 things for this look:

*The pink liner with crazy
dramatic lashes*

*A super nude lip*

*Pale pink cheeks*

So here’s what I used:

EYES:
MAC Fuschia pigment
Stila glitter liner
Wet ‘N Wild Turquoise Kohl Eyeliner
Dior DiorShow mascara (revisted—I’m likin’ it more!)

FACE:
Cargo Blush in Lyon

LIPS:
MAC Soft Lust lipstick
Stila Brown Sugar Lipglaze

NAILS:
Sinful Colors San Fransisco

My before…

Tis was fun. I like to play around with everyday looks, runway looks and everything in between! What do you thiiiiink? I will be crazy busy this weekend preparing for my business trip to Chicago early next week. But no worries, I will have scheduled posts. Most will be articles and random ramblings than series’ posts. So I will still be around!

Have a happy weekend, beautiful people!!

Cult of Cherry: Bing’s a Winner!

Cult of Cherry

So as I mentioned in this post, I had the chance to attend a Cult of Cherry release party at MAC last week. I had a wonderful time! I don’t drink alcohol but the Godiva Lacquer drinks were delicious. I spent 30 minutes actin’ a fool with my favorite make-up artists Sophia and Thai at the Orlando PRO store and gazing at the new products.

I won’t do the list of all of the products as I try not to get too caught up in posting collection product rundowns but I have to say that everything was absolutely beautiful. I have not been impressed with a MAC Collection in quite awhile but I had a great vibe with Cult of Cherry.

Did it make it want to buy the entire collection?
Um…no. But when have I ever purchased an entire collection? LOL! If yall don’t know by now, your Head Newb here is cheap. I can’t spend that much money on make-up despite the obsession.

I found the palettes to be dupe-able. My girl Sophia goes, “Brit, don’t you start….” because she knew I was thinking of similar colors that the palettes’ pans resembled. I can’t help it!

The lipsticks, however were divine. I had similar colors of most and the blushes did not look to be flattering on a dark skinned brown lady. Not to mention I have enough blushes to last me for a lifetime.

So here is what I got:

Mattene Lipstick in Bing

…and Lip Glass in Jampacked

Being that dark lips is IN for the Fall, I had to cop these two lippies. I was ambivalent for a minute though. Burgundy is one of those colors I always thought Black women needed to move away from. Who remembers how prominent burgundy lips was in the 90’s?

Check out this video for a reference:

But I am learning to except dark lips again. And not just for a Halloween/goth look. I’m thinking that we can rock a pretty dark lip anytime! Check out Bing by itself:

Bing goes Goth

Bing goes Glam

Bing goes mean

Bing’s night out!

I love love looove this lipstick. It is the best thing in my life right now. I think every woman needs to have a vampy burgundy lipstick in their collection.

“But Briiiit, OMG, it isn’t me!”

….if you are thinking this, you need to step out of the comfort zone and be a little daring. Life is short, honey bun. Live a little!

I give Cult of Cherry, the collection a thumbs up. I will be rocking Bing all up and down October and November. I even went vampy on the nails.

O.P.I’s Catherine the Grape is lovely!

….are you excited for Cult of Cherry? Likin’ the fall vampy look? Or not so much? Whatchu say?

Mascara Monday: Stila Major MAJOR last mascara

Happy Monday, pretty people! I hope that you all had a wonderful weekend. I am shocked at how fast these days are and weeks are flying by. I have only a few words for this mascara. Not because I didn’t like it but because I found that it was just a regular ole’ mascara. Check the review.

Price: 2 out of 5 ($22 from StilaCosmetics.com, Sephora.com or Sephora and Ulta stores)

Packaging (Brush Wand): 2 out of 5

Overall: 4 out of 5

What it claims: “Our long-lasting, plush formula is still the best in the business, known for leaving your lashes looking extra long and luxurious. MAJOR major lash mascara is the one you need to leave a MAJOR lasting impression.”

The truth: It’s good. I mean, it’s a really good mascara.

What I loved about it: The volume and length is definitely there. It is rich and black and even after several coasts it doesn’t weigh down the lashes.

What I didn’t like: Yikes, the brush was a bit messy. And I think it is a little overpriced. It is a little on the clumpy side but nothing too out of control.

Overall: I’m impressed but I’m not doing cartwheels. I don’t see anything unique about this mascara but its performance is up to par.

Would I recommend it: Hmmm…I guess. Although I do think you can find similar mascaras with the same volume and length factor that Major Lash has for a cheaper price.

Prefer a video review? I got cha covered!

What do you think about this mascara? Have you tried it and liked it?

FOTD Friday: Browns ‘N Pinks

I am really starting to love FOTD Fridays. No, really….I spend most of the week just thinking about what look I’m going to share with you wonderful people.

This week’s inspiration comes from Too Faced. I can not express to yall how much I loooove this company. Check out the Mocha Meteor yummy eyeshadow.

Oh uhhh, don’t mind the Obama button. Don’t know how that got there. *wink* I thought for the longest that it makes sense to have a lighter color on the lid and a darker color in the crease. But I decided to switch some things up. I applied Mocha Meteor on the lid and this….

….on the crease. MAC’s Passionate: a lovely hot pink matte eye shadow. I could not imagine trying to make this color work on the lid but it applies beautifully on the crease.

So here’s what I used:

EYES:

Too Faced Shadow Insurance
Too Faced Mocha Meteor Eyeshadow (lid)
MAC Passionate (crease)
MAC Sketch (outer-V)
Clinique Almost Peach (highlight)
Milani Liquid Eyeliner
Maybelline Unstoppable eyeliner
Neutrogena Healthy Volume mascara

FACE:
Cargo Bronzer
NARS Taj Mahal Blush

LIPS:

MAC Tendertone Hot ‘N Saucy (OMG, I looooove this!)

And I’ve been all over China Glaze’s Second Hand Silk.

Loves it! Have you ever played around with concepts that you thought wouldn’t work but did? Like cream blushes on the lips? Or concealer as a highlight? …tell me some! I’m excited about this weekend. One of my girls from college is coming in town and we are going to hit City Walk and act like tourists. Have a beautiful weekend, lovelies! Shoot me any questions, suggestions or comments at Brittany@ClumpsOfMascara.com. Happy Friiiiday!

Let It Clump: HairPlay goodies!

Hola chiquitas. I want to share with you some products that actually work ooooon…

POW!! Hair like this! I have 4/B type hair which means I have tight tight tiiiiight curls (hell, or naps…hehe!). My hair tends to get dry and requires a ton of maintenance so it is a rarity when something besides a natural concoction actually works on the Mother fro here.

I had the opportunity to try two products from Hair Play.

Description: Set doesn’t discriminate against any hair texture. Natural, curly, straight, colored, frizzy your SET. Flexible and weightless as a setting lotion, and easy like a mousse. Use right after shampooing as a detangling leave-in conditioner, enjoy more control with your natural texture or blow dry silky smooth.

Ummm, so it actually works for the fro. I used it after no-pooing and conditioning my hair. I found that it was not sticky but pretty thin in texture. I distributed evenly on my hair and twisted my hair in 2-strand twists. I didn’t get any flakes and it wasn’t extra STIFF either. Who remembers “Pump It Up” spritz? That spray was like liquid metal, mayn. It definitely isn’t on that level. I was surprised that it actually slicked my hair down and stayed in tact. Yikes, I could have down without the parabens in the product since I’m a natural nut when it comes to my hair but other than that, for $19.50 Hair Play’s Set isn’t bad at all.

Don’t even ask me why that picture is extremely pixelated. Ha! After twisting my hair I dabbed a bit of serum in my palms, rubbed them together and applied SEAL alll over the twists. I loves this stuff! It gives me a great deal of shine without being too greasy. Ain’t nothin’ worse than layin’ your head on the car window to to later see a big grease spot. Ewww…doesn’t quite happen with Hair Play’s Seal so I can dig it. I think $22 is a bit steep for the tiny bottle but a little goes a long way.

SO YAY TO HAIR PLAY!

I’m glad that Fritz Clay, the creator of Hair Play recognizes women have different hair textures. I swear, 90% of hair companies out there just don’t understand that. He says, “my salon discriminates against no one. We are the experts in straight hair, Asian hair, Black hairstyles as well as styles for Latina hair, no texture left out of coarse after all we’re Hair Play.”

Alriiiight! Check out these and more products by Hair Play at HairPlayProducts.com.

The finished twisty look!

Stay beautiful!!

Let It Clump: Magazine Fab!

Time for a Let It Clump post! This series where we stop talking about make-up to explore other areas of beauty and beyond. That’s anything! Nails, hair, fashion, jacked up love lives..anything! Any suggestions? Let me know at Brittany@ClumpsOfMascara.com.

So let’s talk magazines. Growing up I was an avid Seventeen and CosmoGirl reader. I also stole….I mean snagged my parents’ Ebony, Essence and Jet mags. But I never felt like I related to those magazines. Seventeen was great for reading on airplanes or on long road trips and Ebony felt like it was geared more to “grown folx”.

I am currently subscribed to Allure magazine but mainly just to keep up with the newest beauty fads and products on a commercial level. Yet I still don’t FEEL a connection with that magazine.

I even copped that highly coveted Vogue Italian Black Issue.

I agree with Seymone. The sistas are baring it a little too much for me. And yes the ads…well, let’s just say I forgot it was the “Black Issue”. HA! But it is what it is. I’ll save that rant for the personal blog.

But there is one magazine that I adore. I mean…I am truly in love with this magazine. It incorporates everything! Fashion, beauty, hair, culture, hobbies and lifestyle by and for the modern Black woman.

Let me introduce you to……

Colures Magazine;
a UK publication

I purchased this copy at a Borders in Los Angeles and have struggled to find another one since!

Colures is impeccable. Check out some of the spreads…

do you see the abudance of nappturals sistas?
WOW!

Ahhh, look at the make-up! That silver glitter on the lips is hottttt!

….and the ads aren’t bad either.

And some culture talk too?

I flippin’ love this magazine! But can’t find it anywhere in Florida. Urgh! Anyone else familiar with Colures?

I went to MAC’s Cult of Cherry party at my MAC Pro and had a ball. Of course I leave my camera but I’ll post some pictures of my 1 lippie and 1 lip glass haul on the laters. I would have loved to snag some of those palettes but yall know I’m the dupe queen. I think everything is a dupe. But I’m all over the vampy burgundy matte lipstick.

And a random video posting…

I know this is a jam packed post. My bad, beautiful people! Have a wonderful hump day!

Mascara Monday: Neutrogena Healthy Volume Mascara

It’s Moooooonday! I had a wonderful weekend with my lovely Ari over at Fashion Devotee. Her blog is on a little hiatus but she’ll be back soon. Now let me share with you the most recent mascara review!

.
.
.
.
.
.
Neutrogena Healthy
Volume Mascara

Price: 5 out of 5 (under $6 regular price)

Packaging (Brush Wand): 3 out of 5

Overall: 5 out of 5

What it claims: “This lash-enhancing mascara instantly builds lash volume by 400%. The patent-pending formula with a touch of olive oil penetrates and helps plump the core of each and every lash. The Visible Volume Brush coats and builds even the smallest lashes with rich, volume-building color. No clumps, smudging or flaking!” (source)

The truth: Wow! This is seriously a great mascara! I am extremely impressed.

What I loved about it: This mascara being on sale at Target for less than $5 is really what inspired me to purchase it. That and the the claim of making your lashes 400x fuller. Now I know I exaggerate everything, but Neutrogena was straight trippin’ making a claim like that. But do you get some volume? Absolutely!!! I noticed a serious difference after applying the first coat. And even after applying 3 coats, I didn’t get any clumps. It is the truth!

What I didn’t like: Wah waaaa, I’m such a stickler about my brushes so of course I would have loved if the bush was smaller but whatev. I can’t complain because of the performance that this brush gives.

Would I purchase again?: Sho nuff! (who else says this…lol?) And those looking for extreme volume should too. It is definitely a great budget buy! I love when you can find cheap mascaras that work well. Go buy it nooooow!

The pictures below aren’t the BEST but it shows the BEFORE and AFTER of applying one coat of Neutrogena’s Healthy Volume Mascara.

I took them while giving my hair a deep conditioner. I couldn’t find my shower cap so ya girl had to uhhhh, do some improvising. Ha!!

That picture should probably be embarrassing but whatev. You folx know I love keepin’ it real.

So who would have thought that Neutrogena would have such a great mascara? I’m sold! Have you tried this? Or would you be inclined to try it? Now that I think about it….Neutrogena has quite a cosmetic selection. Anyone own anything from them? Keep sendin’ me reviews at Brittany@ClumpsOfMascara.com.

FOTD Friday: Flashback & Contest Winners

It has been a super long week, yall. I have had A LOT of good news, most of which I will share later, but I have also had my share of exhausting busy-ness. But I can’t complain. I’m the type that feels “funny” when my life isn’t in overdrive.

To continue on with the Mascara Monday rewind, I decided to post some of my boldest FOTDs. Most of these were done when I was living in Los Angeles and playing in make-up really became not only a hobby, but….a friend. I spent hours every night trying to come up with some creative ish. My skills weren’t so hot but this was really when I looooved eyeshadow.

My first week in LA….I really had nothing else to do but do craaaazy bold looks.

Ahhh, the Jigsaw piece. I had so much fun doing this.

Sunshine seriously consisted of 3 products. Loved this look!

Who remembers MAC Mi’Lady mineralized duo?

Awww….this is my FIRST all MAC look. I got addicted to MAC during the C-Shock era last summer and was all over that Wondergrass paired with Humid. And you couldn’t tell me nothin’ about those 3D lip glasses. I can’t believe that was only a year ago and I’ve moved 4 times since then!

That nude lip is sick! I’ve got to try to do that again. Loved this look….around this time, I started to tone down the BOLD looks and focus on pretty pinks/purples and neutrals.

If you remember these looks, you are serious a vetern Clumps of Mascara viewer! And I loves you for it!!

Now for the 2 winning Stila
Lipstick Contest Entries:

“I vote because i’m scared that if I don’t i’ll be paying 20 bucks a gallon for some gas in a matter of months. lol jk…

It’s important to vote because not doing so would be single handedly snatching away our voice. No vote…no voice. No voice…no song. I sing my song for the woman with sore feet who went against the rules and sat at the front of the bus. I sing my song for young children that got sprayed with fire hoses. I sing my song for abused & dominated women. I sing my song for shackled slaves. I sing my song for ME, and most importantly…for my future children.”

-Kenya

AND

“It is sooo important to vote, especially in this day and age. Many people, especially women, have fought for our right to vote and have a say about the future of our country. As women, we are always affected by who our President because many issues affect us and our children – gun control, abortion rights, education, health insurance – the list goes on and on. If we don’t cast our vote and choose – we are being complacent and currently, letting men make decisions for us. Vote, vote, vote!! Especially this time – we need change so we can get out of the recession, improve the economy and spend money on important stuff – like makeup!”

-Shefali

I love how these ladies touched on so many issues in just a few words. True beauty lies not in this make-up bit we talk about but our cognizance of worldwide issues; and how they will affect our future. I love yall!! Shoot me emails so I can send off your lippies. Thank you to all of the submissions.

Support Stila cosmetics and VOTE!!!!!

……and be my friend. :)

Stay beautiful!
