Comb Breakin’ Memories

Orange Nail Polish

Knock Knock

Who’s there?

Orange….

Orange Who?

Orange you glad it’s summer time!

Now yall know I’m a cornball, so don’t even trip. Hehe…but seriously, orange is the business this summer. I’m not even kidding. Yes, something doesn’t become the “it” thing until a celebrity is spotted wearing it but I’ve never been hesitate to wear orange nail polish. And I know orange isn’t one of those colors that you can wear freely if you have a professional job, but bustin’ them on the toes is also an alternative. I’m wearing OPI’s Cajun Shrimp now on my tootsies.

I’ll spare you the feet photos this time. I felt rather odd uploading them. But seriously….I swear it’s the prettiest color I have ever laid eyes on. And yes it’s brown girl friendly. I actually think that most fingernail polishes go well with brown skin. So whoever told you they you can’t sport yellow polish, tell them the Head Newb at Clumps of Mascara thinks otherwise. Ha!

I can’t seem to find OPI Cajun Shrimp anywhere in stores and my lady who did my pedicure wasn’t trying to sell it to me either. Turns out that I have some pretty beautiful orange polishes in my little collection….you ready?

Fingerpaints ($2.99)…this color doesn’t have a name, but I think it is the closest “work appropriate orange” we are going to get. It has a few shimmers (one day I’ll learn polish terminology) and is a gorgeous rusted orange.

TKC Mandarin. I purchased this from the nail salon so I’m not sure where they got it from but it has more of a matte finish and is truly the color of a mandarin. It is such a beautiful orange. I’m rockin’ this color on my nails this weekend!

Isa Dora Orange (copped this one on sale for $2 so I’m not sure of its retailed value). This is my 2nd favorite orange polish. It is a beautiful muted orange and I think its subtlety really pops out on brown skin. Clumps of Mascara strikes again with the smudged nail!

Milani Juicy Glo ($3.99). This polish has a similar matte finish to that TKC and in terms of colors, they are almost identical. Milani’s Juicy Glo has bit of “neon”. Ohhh yess, I adore this. I would definitely wear this on the fingers and toes. Grrr, and excuse the blur on this one. I promise I will learn how to successfully take nice polish and fingers pictures.

And the best thing about these orange polishes is that they can all be found at your local drugstore. And look out for buy 1, get 1 free deals on Milani and Fingerpaints. I love french pedicure on the toes like every other girl, but step it up a notch with some color, girlfriend!

Orange you glad that you can be fab on a budget?

Okay….I’ll stop. But I really wanna know your input….yay or nay to the orange polish?

Coastal Scents brushes

There has been a lot of buzz in the online beauty world about Coastal Scents brushes. I’ve seen Kia over at Yummy411 give a review, Kenya at Virtuous Blue did a wonderful video review of the brushes and my online make-up guru/teacher, EnKore has been raving about these brushes for awhile.

I can’t believe I’ve been snoozing on these, folx!!

Not only are the brushes are affordable (think $2.99) but many are saying that they are comparable to MAC brushes in look and performance. Now that sounds good to me and I’m sure to my other broke beauty sistas of the world.

I love brushes but I don’t feel as if I need to have 2 or more of the same thing so it was rather difficult trying to find a brush that I actually “needed” from Coastal Scents. But here’s what I ended up getting:

Pink Kabuki ($4.99)—Now granted I have the MAC 182 ($45) kabuki and I adore it. I find that it works great with blushes and mineral foundations. I even use it with my bronzers and I love how I can squeeze it to change its shape. But who can beat a pretty pink kabuki brushes? How gorgeous is this? I just haaaaaad to order this.

Deluxe Buffer Brush ($4.25)—These brushes are great for those that use mineral foundations; which are my foundations of choice. I have been going foundation-less for some weeks now and will be until I get my face in check BUT….I can’t wait to start using this with my mineral powders. And if it doesn’t work, chile….I won’t even care because it was less than $5.00.

Pink Kolinsky Lip Brush ($2.79)—Kenyah over at Virtuous Blue says that this is a great brush. I only have one lip brush that I hardly use but I would love to have a retractable one. Can’t wait to see how this works out.

My Dear Newbies, if you have been trying to invest in brushes without breaking your wallets, I’m thinking this is the way to go. I will be sure to do a review of my brushes the minute I get them. For those of you that own them or have heard great things about them, let a sista know!

Clinique’s High Impact Mascara review

It’s another Mascara Monday, ladies. Mascara Mondays is when we show tribute to the star of the blog in attempts to find *drum roll*…..the best mascara ever! Today I will be reviewing Clinique’s High Impact mascara. With a name like this….you would think that it would live up to its potential.

Price: 3 out of 5
Packaging (Brush Wand): 1 out of 5
Overall: 2 out of 5

What it claims: Volumizes and lengthens lashes for a lusher, plusher, bolder look. Pure, deep colour adds impact.”

The truth: High impact? I’m not too sure about that. Maybe medium impact. I have medium length lashes that need a GREAT mascara to make them pop. This unfortunately did not do this. Not only that but it didn’t even last throughout the day.

What I loved about it: I love the rich black color that this mascara provides. And that’s about it.

What I didn’t like: It just doesn’t live up to its name. It did not give me much volume and only a little bit of length.

Overall: I’m not a fan. The bristles aren’t defined so it is very difficult for me to run it through my lashes. It also gets a bit flaky and definitely didn’t stand up to the little crying spell I had the other day. Perhaps Clinique should re-name this macsara “Some Impact Mascara”. Plus, the price is not where its at for a broke sista like myself. $14.00 for a mascara is pushin’ it. I doubt that I would try this mascara again.

What do you think about this mascara? Have you tried it and liked it?

Stay tuned for next week’s Mascara Monday when I review a drugstore brand mascara.

Fam looks

Hi gorgeous people!

A few weeks my little sister was in a debutante ball. It was one of those affairs where each participant is asked to raise money for ads. The money is then given to the “winner” in form of a scholarship. Meanwhile, the high school aged girls are taught etiquette skills and how to conduct themselves as young Black women in today’s society. Then they are introduced to family in friends at a big ceremony. It sounds like a good idea, but seeing what my Mother and sister went through, I’m not sure it was worth it. Plus, it’s just too showy in my opinion.

Nonetheless, I supported my family like a good “ran away from home at 18″ child does. I was also asked to do my sister and Mother’s make-up. Which made me nervous. I still think my skills are only decent. I never deemed myself as a make-up artist and don’t think I have the skills enough to go around applying make-up on others. Buuuut, I did the best I could and they both turned out beautifully.

Here’s what I used on Courtney:

EYES:
UDPP
Artifact P/P
Pink Venus (from Fafi) e/s
Hepcat e/s
Sketch on crease
Vanilla pigment
Blacktrack fluidline
L’Oreal Voluminous mascara
Some glittery stuffs to make the highlight pop

….I let her do her own foundation and swiped MAC’s Sweet as Cocoa blush on her cheeks.

She also did her own lips.

At first I was hesitate at the idea of her rockin’ pink lids with a white wedding dress-ish piece, but it turned out beautifully!

….and then my Mother wanted me to do her eyes and I was like, “Oh Lord…” This woman had found a Maybelline trio of bright turquoise colors and was seriously wanting to rock that look with a turquoise dress. I did the best I could and was a little afraid at first but my Moms is so fine.

I seriously think I have the best lookin’ 50-year old Momma anyyyyywhere. She is so beautiful!

As anyone else been approached with asking to do make-up? And I’m not talking about you cosmetic school students or those who have been in the make-up game for awhile. Any newbies experience anything like this? I can play around on my eyes all day but when asked to do a look for someone else, I always choke. My newbie nerves are always shot, yall!

Have a beautiful Sunday!

Spring time, baby!

Dear Newbies,

Spring is here. And being that I am a native to Florida, I love love love it! I get to spend more time outside by the beach, pool, at theme parks and festivals and just enjoying the weather. This makes Year 2 of my make-up/beauty obsession and I have to say, I have learned a TON since last year. Here are my Top Spring/Summer Tidbits for Newbies.

Wear Bronzers

I’ve stopped wearing face make-up but that doesn’t mean that I don’t want some kind of glow. My new Bobbi Brown Shimmerbrick is perfect for a Springy/Summer glow.

And I know it’s a bit on a pricey side (ahem, $42) but yall gotta trust me on this one. Such a great investment! And I’m sure there are better dupes out there (namely Milani) but I’ve been having dreams about this Shimmerbrick since December of last year. I swirl my MAC 182 brush in this and lightly brush it on the apples of my cheeks. A little goes a long way and it gives me a noticeable but subtle shimmer. I love it! I didn’t think that darker skinned women could pull of bronzers, but honeyyyyy, we sho can. I’ll show you in the FOTDs to come.

Minimal Eye Shadows

I already have oily lids so going through the hassles of putting on 1-2 bases and 2-4 eye shadow colors on just isn’t something that I look forward to in the summertime. Instead, I just sweep a highlight under my brows. I still look “made up” but with little effort. Vanilla pigment is my HG highlight and looks great when applied with a fluffy brush.

Pretty Pouts

My lips aren’t always so hot in the winter time because they tend to be drier. But during spring/summer, I love bustin’ pretty and rich colors. Yes, girl…even at the beach while sippin’ a pina colada. Pretty lips give the face instant glam! And lip products don’t even have to be top of the line.

Ya feel me? $1.72 for N.Y.C. Gotta love it!

Fab nail colors with cute sandals

And when I say fab nail colors, I mean alllll colors! Orange, green, yellow, pink, purple, fire engine red….any and every color. And I love designer shoes like a lot of females but I also love to save some money and get twice as many pairs at Payless. Shooo…..I ain’t shame. I think these are mad cute for only $10.

And with colors like these….

(thanks Yums)

You couldn’t tell me anything…

So, see, newbsters…spring/summertime is great for us! Last year I spent a lot of time coming up with make-up designs with my terrible skills. This post is a great example of that. This time around I plan on taking it easy on the face, checking out new collections and perfecting liner on the lower lash line. That’s my project of the season!

What’s yours? Do you have any tips/suggestions for fellow newbies? Share them!

Yessss, I got tagged!

Aaaand, here we go! Another “tag” session. Love these! And with them come random pictures. Yall know how silly I am, so brace yourself. First off….I want to send some love to my fellow beauty bloggers.

Love love love yall! Here are my top quirky ‘but they make me me’ tidbits..

1) I love to people watch. And not just “watch people walk by”. I seriously look at their facial expressions/movements, listen to them and begin developing story lines about them. I’ve been doing these since I was a little girl and have even developed short stories inspired by strangers. That’s kinda Lifetime movie stalker-ish, uh?

2) I have a problem asking for anything. Seriously….and I’ve been this way for as long as I can remember. I’ve gone hungry because I have been too proud to ask for a piece of bread. I’ve slept in my car because I hate invading peoples’ spaces. I know….is that not crazy or what?

3) I’m superwoman. I’m serious….I can lift a ton of bags, carry things up and down stairs and have this crazy strength. It’s strange but hella useful when living in a 2nd-floor apartment and having to carry 7 bags of groceries in the rain.

4) I pretend to like weaves when in reality I loathe them tremendously. And on anyone. Braid extensions are one thing but weave ponytails, lace fronts, tracks, etc….ugghhh, it’s a mess and always so obviously fake to me. I just think everyone needs to wear their own hair…..you know, if they can.

5) When I was younger, I used to have my own talk show. I had a little jingle and would literally talk to myself on an entire 60 minute cassette. Sometimes I would have a featured guest (my babysitter or friend) and would even do my own commercials. A mess.

Told yall…I’m a straaange person. But most neo-hippies are.

Check me out on my first time on a city bus in Philly…

That experienced me braced me for takin’ the Metro in LA. Boyyyyy, you can take the girl out of the ‘burbs, but…

And more recent…

Why does my Little (I’m in BigBrothers, BigSisters) ALWAYS take the best pictures of my figure? Had I had anyone take this I would have looked like a hippo. Love it!

Don’t ask me WTF that means because I made it up myself.
HAHAHAHA!

Adult Acne, get thee behind!

Hi beauts.

Can you believe I only took 2 pictures while in New York?

Beautiful, uh? I think I’ve been enough times to not have to play “tourist” anymore. I’ve also been tagged by some of my blog sistas and I’m still working on those. Yall know I looove doing them! So much fun!

Today’s post makes me sad but everything isn’t so beautiful in the world of beauty. Adult acne, being one of them. This is something that I have been struggling with for about a year and I am super close to seeking dermatological help. I’ve tried everything from fasting, to dis-use of products, keeping my hands away from my face, drinking a ton of water, natural/herbal treatments, vitamins and my oh my….the list goes on. So I’ve purchased my first Acne Treatment skincare products by Murad.

Have any of you heard about this line? I asked one of the lovely ladies at Sephora about this and she raved on and on about it so I decided to give it a try. But in order to see how well it will work, I have to show you the BEFORE pictures.

Now yall know I like to keep it real with my readers. I’ll show you a make-up less picture of me any day but I feel like I dead in these shots and with my face lookin’ like this, I’m just….a bit insecure. But Clumps of Mascara is all about mistakes and whatnot, so here goes!

I get pimples like this popping up on my face at least every other day.

And clusters of little bumps forming close to the hairline.

This is the worst….chin pimples! I finally got some of them to go away, but then they left ugly scars. Boo!

Daily pimples poppin’ up on my cheeks…and scars are left behind.

Okay this is a full “ain’t washed my face yet” picture. And excuse the Color Purple braids. My skin is relatively smooth and soft but a pimply horror!

My Mom says my face isn’t “that bad” but compared to how my skin used to look, it is. It is rather disheartening, actually. I am hopeful that these products will work. But if not, off to the derm, I go.

Any one else suffering from adult acne? Do you have any suggestions or recommendations for me? Let a sista know. I’ll keep yall updated!!
