The Gorgeous Zoya Irresistible nail polish collection

My nails have finally decided to stop acting crazy and you know what the means…I’ll be cranking out nail polish posts. I received this collection quite some time ago so the excitement for it has died down a bit but not in my beauty room. I’m not the biggest lover of foils and metallics but there’s something about these. They are just so beautiful…

GB and Zoya

See what I mean?

Zoya Bobbi

Bobbi is a hot magenta pink foil metallic. I’m pretty sure I’ve seen a similar color like this from Zoya (then again…Zoya doesn’t really dupe themselves a lot) and if I haven’t, I’m making stuff up. Bottom line: it’s a fantastic super bright strawberry-ish shade. And it looks stunning on the toes. I’ve been wearing it 3 weeks straight now.

Zoya Rikki

Rikki is a fern green foil metallic. I would have loved if this green was a little richer but it’s not so bad. It applies beautifully.

Zoya Tinsley

Tinsley is a rose gold foil metallic and I don’t think I’ve ever seen a metallic like this. Of course we all know how much I don’t like the color pink but this is dainty, girly and just super sweet.

Zoya Hazel

Hazel is a full-coverage, blue green foil metallic. I don’t see much green in it. In fact, it definitely leans more on the blue side and reminds me of a stormy cloud. They should have really named the polish Stormy. Just sayin’…

Zoya Amy

Amy is a lot full-coverage, red orange foil metallic that looks a lot like China Glaze’s Riveting. It’s a stunning and insanely bright nail polish. It isn’t super unique but it is gorgeous nonetheless.

Zoya Kerry

Kerry is a full-coverage, yellow gold foil metallic. I’ve never been a fan of golds but somehow I can get down with yellow golds.

Okay so it’s not my favorite Zoya nail polish collection but it’s nice enough. It’ll definitely appeal to the bright nail polish lovers of the world. My faves? Bobbi, Tinsley and Amy. I think I prefer Zoya’s Stunning collection over this one. Then again I looooove creme nail polishes.

You can grab this collection from Zoya.com for $8/bottle or $48 for the entire collection.

GLOSSYBOX review – July 2013

It’s been a hot lil’ minute since we’ve tangoed with good ole’ GLOSSYBOX. And yeah, I know I’m like a month behind reviewing it but hey, maybe this review will motivate you enough to finally get that GB subscription that you’ve been lusting over for so long. I got this box for review and I think it’s oh so fitting for a summer beauty subscription box.

Glossybox of July 2013

Like all GLOSSYBOX boxes, this one came with a leaflet of what you’ll uncover after ripping the top off of your box.

Glossybox July 2013

I like to review these beauty subscription boxes by the diversity of their products and if their products reach a value of at least $21. That, to me, is very important. Yeah. I’m kinda nutty about it. Let’s get started…

Nail Inc. Baker Street nail polish

Glossybox Nails Inc

This itty bitty bottle of blue polish is fantastic. Nails Inc. is a pretty high-end brand and so even though this isn’t a full size bottle, seeing the baby version of one appear in a GLOSSYBOX is crazy exciting. Plus, this striking cobalt blue is stunning. I mean, dang…

Dr. Brandt BB Matte with Signature Shinerase

Glossybox

I’ve heard of this brand before but I didn’t know that they had a BB cream. Then again, who doesn’t have one? It’s a moderate sample size but they get a fail because the Light to Medium is far too light for me.

Nicka K New York ABSOLUTE Make-up Cleansing Tissues

Glossybox USA

These babies are a bonus item in this month’s GLOSSYBOX. Pretty rad bonus. 10 towelettes is enough to really test the product. They are heavily fragranced so you know they aren’t exactly up my alley.

Figs & Rogue Cherry Blossom Tinted Lip Balm Tube

Glossybox lip balm

Glossybox lips

This gorgeous tube of lip balm was the first thing eyes landed on when I opened up the box. My, what gorgeous packaging! The lip applicator (or lack of one) isn’t all that comfortable when it comes to applying. But this petroleum-free lip balm isn’t strong on the scents and the subtle pink shade will look flattering on everyone. I dig it!

BVLGARI Eau Pafumeé au thé Blanc Shampoo & Shower Gel

Glossybox Bvlgari

It’s a generous sample size but I don’t do perfumes and so even sniffing this gave me a slight headache.

Brazilian Blowout Açai Deep Conditioning Masque

Glossybox hair

For the gals who love keepin’ their do’s in check, this hair masque has enough product to give you a few tests of how the masque may work on your hair. That is, if you don’t have Rupunzel-length hair. I doubt I’ll give it a whirl. I’m just not really into hair products these days.

OVERALL:  This box was definitely worth at least $21. This is the norm for GLOSSYBOX as I’ve come to discover that they are pretty good with giving you products that at least meet what you’ve spent. And like all subscription boxes, you aren’t going to love everythiiiiing but with this one, there is something for everyone. They cover hair, skincare, nails, cosmetics and fragrances and that’s just no easy task. Another win for GLOSSYBOX .

If you haven’t signed up for  a box yet – head on over here  and do so.

Beauty in Mommyhood: NUK’s Seal n’ Go Breast Milk Bags

Okay, so now that I’ve got more time on my hands, I am going to be doing more baby-focused reviews. I know. You’re excited, huh? Every time I turn around I’ve got another friend expecting a babeh and asking me something related to breastfeeding. I can never offer any advice because breastfeeding was a total FAIL for Elle and I but what I do know is pumping. I pump my life away yo. Nuk so graciously sent me some of their breast milk bags to review and I couldn’t be happier.

Breastmilk bags

While I was sent some of these to review, I have also purchased and been giving manyyyyyyyy breast milk storage bags from my moms who I donate milk to. In the 7 months that I have been exclusively pumping I have filled up thousands of breast milk storage bags. So I know a few things about ‘em.

Nuk breastmilk bags

About NUK’s Seal n’ Go Breast Milk Bags:
-100% leak-proof double zipper seal
-Superior oxygen barrier for freshness
-BPA free
-Leak proof double zipper seal protects against leaking

Nuk

I’ve tried 3 different brands of breast milk storage bags and Nuk’s get the job done, mamas. I do more filling up than I do defrosting them but both tasks require having sturdy breast milk bags. These are nice. They aren’t my absolute favorite because I find that the zipper seal can’t be easily sealed but I use them regularly and haven’t experienced any leaks. I like to fill my bags up to 7 oz  and these bags are completely stuffed at about 7 oz. I find that I can get more milk in other bags.

Breast Milk Storage bags

And like all breast milk bags, the measurements on the bag are all kinds of wrong. I usually measure my milk in a bottle and don’t refer to the bag.

And these bags aren’t just great for breast milk. We like storing Elle’s homemade baby food in them too.

Baby food

Esposo and I like to steam and purée fresh vegetables for Elle, put them in ice cube trays, freeze them, pop ‘em in breast milk bags and then take them out when we need them. These bags are fantastic for storing food! The food stays fresh and tasty.

Bottom line: If you’re a lactating mama or a mama who likes to freeze homemade breast milk, you’ll like these bags. Plus, they’re pretty affordable too at only $6.99 for 25 bags.

Food Yum: My newest favorite salad…tabbouleh

I’ve got a little more time in my hands so I think I’m going to start re-cranking out more Food Yum posts. My eating habits have been changing over the past few months and when I tell folx about ‘em, they always want to know what kind of recipes I make.

Long time readers know of Clumps of Mascara know that I don’t make a dang thing in my house. Except green smoothies or sweet potatoes. I also make homemade baby food but actual meals for actual adults? Yeah no. Esposo has been the chef in our house since we’ve been married. Even when we dated, he would come over to my house and whip up delicious meals for me to eat. Lately we have both been on a weight loss mission (sigh…again) and we are both gluten-free. I’ve been dairy-free for 7 months and the thought giving up bread would be the death of me. But actually, it isn’t. Reading the book Wheat Belly really put things into perspective for me and loosing 4 lbs without trying confirmed it. Wheat is no bueno and we’ve been trying to find a ton of alternatives for it.

You’ve heard of tabbouleh, haven’t you?

Quinoa Tabbouleh

This traditional Levantine Arab dish consists of primarily parsley, bulgar wheat and tomatoes. Easy, right? You can spice it up by adding onion, a splash of lemon, garlic powder, salt and pepper but we’ve found that simplest is best. Esposo whipped this up for the first time a few months ago and I’m hooked. He know HAS to make it at least once every 2 weeks.

In this batch we added sunflower greens…our newest and favorite green. I’ve never been much of a salad eater but tabbouleh is addicting. And so so flavorful. And so so  easy to make. To make it gluten-free we swapped bulgar wheat for quinoa. A good batch will last in the fridge for 3-5 days and that’s usually enough for us both to have 2 servings a day.

Tabbouleh

Basically tabbouleh is amazing. Try it soon, y’all. You’ll thank me! Here’s the recipe that we used. I definitely prefer it without cucumbers though. I love veggies but I loathe cukes. Yucky.

Any salad lovers in the house?

The iPad case for cool kids: The Snugg

Once upon a time I used to scoff at the iPad. I thought it was nothing more than an oversized and overpriced iPhone. And then I got my hands on one. And fell in love. The end. I adore everything about my iPad and getting the opportunity to review The Snugg iPad case has me lovin’ it even more.

The Snugg iPad case

You’ve heard of the Snugg, haven’t you? This popular iPad case  performs beautifully. And it’s not just me sayin’ this. Check out their Amazon reviews. But first things first. Let’s go into the features of this case.

Snugg review

-Cost: $34
-Versatile flip stand with two positions.
-Comes with a Lifetime Guarantee.
-Case is made from soft PU leather and is lined with velvety nubuck.
-Includes a convenient loop for stylus pen.
-The cover automatically switches the iPad screen on and off thanks to the in-built Sleep and Wake function on the iPad. When the cover is closed, your iPad will go into sleep move, saving your battery.

That last function is my favorite! I remember when Apple first released their iPad case cover that did the same thing and that pretty much sold me on wanting to purchase an iPad. I hated how that case didn’t cover the entire iPad though. This is why the Snugg rocks.

When it’s closed…

closed iPad

…and when you open it…

Open iPad

Pretty cool, huh? The Snugg is a nice quality case. I’ve been testing it by bringing it in the kitchen to look up recipes, tossing it in my bag for meetings and playing nursery tunes for Elle while I join her on the floor for tummy time. The stitching has stayed in tact and I can easily wipe off smudges with a wet cloth. So parental units…The Snugg is definitely baby-proof.

Snugg

I doubt I’ll ever be doing any presenting with my iPad but if I were to, the little handle in the back is pretty nifty.

I have an iPad 2 case and I noticed that everything matched up well until I noticed the camera hole being a little off centered.

iPad camera

The main reason for this, I think, is because my iPad isn’t snug enough in the case. It’s not a terrible flaw but it’s something to note.

I really don’t have any other complaints about this case. I think the price point is reasonable and the quality rocks. I can use every function of the case without taking my iPad out and that’s a huge plus. I’m a lover of the color orange but the Snugg comes in a ton of colors.

Busting Beauty Myths + Giveaway!

Water

So girls (and the handful of guys that read this blog)…let’s talk about beauty myths, shall we? I could probably write a book on ‘em because there are just THAT many. The sad thing is, when it comes to skincare and my obsession with trying to have and KEEP clear skin, I’ll probably try anything. Except dab pee on my pimples.

Naw. I can’t get down with that. I don’t know if it’s a rumor within the family or not but my girl cousins have this running joke that Grandma has always had clear skin and her “liquid output” is the reason why. Everyone is too afraid to ask her. And to try it. I mean come on, dude. I’m comfortable with my body but I’ve gotta draw a line somewhere.

Check out my list of beauty myths…

Black don’t crack.
Yeah no. Everyone gets wrinkles.

Good skin is all genetic.
Not always. Good skin is also determined by lifestyle and diet.

Water is important for hydration but it won’t necessarily lead to healthier skin.
So not true. Our skin contains a good amount of water and hydrated skin is healthier skin.

Black girls don’t need sunscreen.
Yeah no. The sun don’t discriminate, mamacita. EVERYONE needs protection from the sun.

Going a day without washing your face never hurt anyone.
Pfft! Lies! I can’t be the only who has gone to sleep without washing their face only to have pimples greeting me the next morning. It’s good to get in the habit of always washing the face before bed.

Eucerin skincare
My favorite Eucerin skincare products for when my skin needs that extra hydration.

I could list a dozen more but I’d love to hear some of yours. Are you forever running into crazy beauty myths? How ’bout this…you tell me what they are and you could be entered to win the following:

Three Fabulous Eyeliners That Stay Where You Put Them

Eyeliners

When it comes to my beauty arsenal, eyeliner seems to be poorly represented. I have fifteen varieties of blush, over fifty shades of lipstick and so many eye shadow palettes that I have honestly lost count.

However, I only have three types of eyeliner. Why only three? Because I found the only three I’ll ever need. It can be hard to find beauty products that want to stay where we put them. Lipstick smears, foundation rubs off and eyeliner smudges. I dig the retro cat-eye, but I’ve found that it can turn into raccoon eyes without much prompting. After years of fighting with my eyeliner, I decided to try out something meant to wear a bit longer.

And no, I don’t mean permanent makeup. *shudders*

NYX Cosmetics Super Skinny Eye Marker — $9

What can I say; I absolutely love this eye marker. I get a gorgeous line and it just glides on! Give it a few seconds to dry and you’re set for the day, no matter what activities you have planned.

Pros: Easy to use, great control.
Cons: Only one shade available.

Glominerals Precision Eye Pencil — $16

This eyeliner pencil is great for everyday use. I usually get six to eight hours of regular wear out of it, so it’s ideal for the office or a day spent shopping. It’s available in eight gorgeous shades; my personal favorite is Plum.

Pros: Goes on easy, doesn’t tug, great for sensitive skin.
Cons: Doesn’t wear well through strenuous activities, needs to be sharpened.

Chanel Stylo Yeux Waterproof Long-Lasting Eyeliner — $30

If you’re willing to spend a little more on long wearing eyeliner, this is the one to buy. Waterproof and smudge proof, it’s perfect for lounging in the pool or kicking it at the beach. It’s available in seventeen shades with a built in sharpener on the end.

Pros: Waterproof, variety of shades.
Cons: Expensive.

These three great eyeliners give me a variety of looks and the kind of durability I wish I could expect from all of my makeup. Lipstick, I’m looking in your direction.
