5 Reasons Why You Should See THE BEST MAN HOLIDAY

It’s been forever and a day since I had a real Girl’s Night Out. Between Esposo working crazy hours and not having a sitter on hand, getting out at night is practically impossible. But the stars aligned, a babysitter was hired and on Tuesday night some girlfriends and I were out to see THE BEST MAN HOLIDAY. I received a whole kit of goodies to ramp up the excitement…

Screen Shot 2013-11-13 at 7.35.47 PM

You remember THE BEST MAN, don’t you? Best movie everrrrr. I have it on DVD and pretty much know it word-for-word.

The cast.

How they managed to get ALL of the original cast members is beyond me. This NEVER happens. But it did for THE BEST MAN HOLIDAY and the women are still gorgeous and the men are still fine, honey. How have Sanaa Lathan and Nia Long NOT aged? How is Morris Chestnut’s chest still so perfectly chiseled? Whooooa!

It’s a roller coaster of emotions.

Some movies are mostly funny. Others are mostly sad. Some are thought-provoking. THE BEST MAN HOLIDAY is a roller coaster of so many emotions. The up and down almost made me want to go home and have a glass of wine to collect my thoughts. Good acting really makes you feel the emotions of the characters and my girls and I were all over the place emotionally.

It makes for great discussion.

My girls and I couldn’t stop talking about the movie after we left. You know a movie is good when you get invested with the characters so much that you keep talking about them as if they really exist!

It isn’t overly Christmas-y.

Some of y’all are against the Christmas EXPLOSION that happens in November and December. Personally, I could be in the Christmas spirit year round but I’m lame like that. For those that suck their teeth over Christmas songs, movies and decorations, you folx will be happy to know that the movie isn’t heavily Christmas-fied.

It’s always good to support the brown people on the big screen.

Let’s face it, seeing people of color on the big screen is such a rarity. I’m all for diversity and it annoys me that Hollywood doesn’t have more people that look like me on the silver screen.

Go see THE BEST MAN HOLIDAY! You will love it. Looooove it!

A Month of Thanks 2013: Day 14 – Mis padres

DSC_1959

Mis padres means “my parents” in Spanish. Oh, how I love my parents. I grew up in a house where my parents weren’t friends. They were parents. It wasn’t always easy talking to them. Or understanding why they did certain things but the older I get, the more I understand their lessons. Being a parent is flipping hard. And nothing can prepare you for it.

My parents did the best they could and for that, I’m thankful. I’m thankful for the sacrifices that they made for me. I am thankful for their pushes, their understanding and their encouragement. It was crazy embarrassing but I am thankful that my Dad, who was a speaker at my college graduation, made me stand up in a sea of hundreds of fellow graduates so that he could have everyone clap for me. I am thankful that when I was in a bind and had no car to get around my Mom simply gave me hers and got another one for herself. I moved away at 18 but I am thankful that I have two 2 houses that I can still call home.

I am my parents’ favorite child. I am the oldest and therefore the best. Obvs.

Both pictures were taken at my baby shower last year.

A Month of Thanks 2013: Day 10 (Breast pumps) and Day 11 (Esposo)

You  like how I combined days 10 and 11, huh? I just knew I would fall behind on the daily posts. I knew it! I’m proud that I’m not too far behind though so yeahhhh.

Day 10: Breast pumps

Breast pumps

The whole “Elle not effectively latching despite my attempting every day for 3 months thing) devastated me and made those first new months of motherhood so so hard. But thanks to the modern conveniences of electric breast pumps, I’ve been able to exclusively pump for Elle for 10 months now. I’ve pumped in hotel rooms, cars, airports, conference rooms, restaurants…the list is endless. I hate it. Pumping sucks. But at least I’m able to give my baby that nourishing breast milk. And I’ve been able to give milk to a total of 9 babies. That includes 3 friends, 2 foster babies, a family who adopted a baby and 2 babies in NICU. I am beyond thankful to thee ole breast pump.

Day 11: Esposo

Today Epsoso and I celebrate 2 years of marriage! I’m a bit bummed out that we didn’t get to spend it together since he’s out of town working but I know he has big plans for when he returns. Marriage is crazy hard. There are some days where I can to punch my darling husband in the throat. But he’s my best friend. My #1 fan. My biggest supporter. My lifelong partner. I love him, will continue to love him and I am thankful to him and our marriage.

A Month of Thanks 2013: Day 9 – The Chance

My new job

I took the above picture in my car last Friday before a job interview. I wasn’t nervous. In fact, I felt confident and powerful. I knew I would rock the interview. I do very good in them. I was just grateful to GET an interview. I feel like I look good on paper but securing an interview is always a challenge.

But today I am thankful because I landed that job. It was offered to me the following day. I get to work for a company that I actually like. I get to be creative. I get to be in control. I get to be independent. I get to work away from a desk from time to time.

I couldn’t be more thankful for this financial burst that our family so needs. And I am so thankful that someone gave me a chance.

Question of the Week:

B says, “I’d love to be a product developer. I would help with marketing and targeting products and packaging to women of color. Woot! “

See you next week!

Let’s Talk A Little Bit About #MascaraProblems…

Mascara wands

This is a collaborative post is all about mascara. And its potential woes…

Mascara can be a wonderful thing – a desert island essential and the one thing most women won’t leave the house without – it makes us look awake and opens up our peepers to give us that pretty, girly look. However, mascara can also be the beauty bane of our lives and when it goes wrong, it really goes wrong. Here are some of our most common #mascaraproblems…

The Eye Poke

You’ve slept in, you’re blurry eyed and you’re trying to balance throwing on some clothes with gulping down a scolding hot coffee and doing your makeup – it’s never going to end well. How it often does end, is with a mascara wand being prodded into your eyeball, blinding you for a good few minutes and consequently making you even later for work. Not ideal.

Over-Zealous Hairdressers

A trip to the hairdressers is supposed to be a relaxing experience, but often, that’s just not the case when you’re at the mercy of an over-zealous hair washer. Not only do you leave with an aching neck after being sat over one of those hellishly uncomfortable sinks, but you’re also subjected to several face-fulls of water as your hairdresser carelessly tries to rinse the conditioner from your locks. Ten minutes later you’re left with black smudges around your eyes and streaky foundation, and there’s absolutely nothing you can do about it. Hairdressers, take note: invest in more comfortable sink seats from Capital Hair & Beauty and be more careful in future!

The ‘Les Mis Effect’

Anybody who saw Les Miserables at the cinema will be well aware of what I’m talking about here. Going to see a sad film at the cinema will inevitably result in you walking out looking like a clown; tear-stained foundation and panda eyes, anyone? It’s happened to all of us, but seen as Les Mis has to be the biggest tear-jerker we’ve ever come across, we’re dubbing this the ‘Les Mis Effect’. Mascara lovers, be warned!

Won’t-Budge Waterproofs

On the other end of the spectrum, the problem isn’t getting some mascaras to stay on, but rather the issue lies with getting them off. Some waterproof mascaras are so determined never to run, smudge or budge, that they’re actually impossible to remove. You can try oils and all the best eye-makeup removers in the world, but you can never quite get it all off. In the process of trying though, you end up with sore eyes and a few less eyelashes than you had when you started. You just can’t win!
