5 Thangs I Don’t Mind Spending A Ton Of Money On

You gals know me. I am the Drugstore Diva. The Frugal Friend. The Cheap Chick. I’m that one person that whenever someone recommends we go somewhere or do something, I’m like, “Wait…how much is this going to cost?” I’ve been this way my entire life and I doubt it’ll ever change. Some things, however…they’re worth the investment. Very rarely will you ever see me justifying a pair of $200 shoes. The only exception? They have to be workout shoes or shoes Ill be getting quite a bit use in. Hmm mmm, I’m not one of those Spent A Ton Of Money On Shoes That I’ll Only Wear Once…Maybe Twice kind of gals. And if you are, hey! – I’m not knockin’ your hustle yo.

I mean, there are sooooome things I’ll spend a significant amount of money on. Ready?

Doctor’s appointments

I’ve played on both sides of the table. I’ve had medical insurance AND there was a brief stint when I was without it. Medical insurance or not, I still made it my duty to get my annual pap smears. There’s nothing attractive being tapped with an insanely high medical bill (the highest I’ve ever seen was $800….gahhh!) but I’d rather know that I’m doing okay than be in the dark about what’s going on in my body. Plus, many hospitals and doctors will work with you when it comes to payment plans so even if you owe a mess load of money after an appointment, you can make small payments each month.

Undergarments

Okay, girl…let’s be honest…ain’t nothin’ tackier than raggedy bras and panties. And I know you’re glaring at the screen all like, “OMG B…don’t you judge me like that.” but I’m serious. In a relationship or not, it is my belief that a woman should take pride in those unmentionables. Does that mean you shell out hundreds of dollars or bra and panty sets? Well…no. But do keep in mind that you get what you pay for and I’m all about investing in my undergarments. Plus, when you’re a member of the Big Bust crew, you pretty much HAVE to spend a pretty penny on bras? Amiright?

Foundation

Okay so yes, I may not wear it often, but I still don’t mind spending a good amount of money on foundation. Every woman needs a good foundation and if you’ve managed to find a drugstore one that suits your needs just fine, they honey…roll with it! However, I’ve found that some of the best foundations that work beautifully for my skin type and tone happen to be at those pricey makeup counters. I usually don’t mind splurging on a good foundation. I mean, can you really put a price on something that makes your skin look freaking phenomenal? Um…noooo.

Skincare products

Sometimes I think I love skincare products more than I love makeup. I could go makeup free any day (and do most days) but I’m always sure to invest time in making sure my pores are in check. Skincare is king, in my opinion. And for that reason, heck yeah I’ll spend a pretty penny on moisturizers, serums and oscillating brush thingies.

Hotels

If you’ve ever traveled with me, it’s pretty obvious. I’m a hotel snob. It’s not my fault, really. You should actually blame my parents for forcing me to have such high lodging standards. Really all anyone needs is a comfortable and safe hotel but when I’m traveling, I’d much rather spend the extra dollars for the extra amenities. Now will I spend more on a hotel than I’d spend on my rent each month? Absolutely not but c’mon…a girl needs her spas, in-property restaurants and mints on the pillows. I’m just sayin’…

What about you? What are you okay with spending a ton of money on?

Neiman Marcus Beauty Blogger Breakfast

The Beauty Bloggers of Central Florida do it again! We managed to get together and have a phenomenal day learnin’ and chattin’ about beauty. When we usually get together, the group, as a whole run the show. This past Saturday, Neiman Marcus in Millenia Mall here in Orlando were so gracious to host us. I know, right? How awesome is that? What we thought would have been us just glancing at pretty beauty baubles turned out to be an experience.

Don’t hate me if you get a tad bit envious looking at these pics. Say you Promise….

That picture is courtesy of my darling sister Courtney over at Phyrra. Okay so yeah – I thought we’d go in the glitzy and glamorous Neiman Marcus, check out their new beauty products and be on our merry ways. Girl no. First they treated us to breakfast complete with mimoas in shimmering glasses…

…and coffee for the gals in need of energy boosts.

Those that arrived early chit-chatted and snapped photos as we waited for the event to get started…

You can’t tell me Su’s nail jewel on her pinky isn’t the hottest thing you’ve ever seen. Hotness!!

The school bell rung and our wonderful beauty principle gave announcements. We would be split up in 4 groups and would circle the beauty department; all while getting mini presentations about several brands. YES!!! But before we departed, we were sent off with notepads…

Cute, ri?

First stop was Lancome, Kiehl’s and YSL.

Of course we all know I love me some Lancome but it was Kiehl’s that blew my mind a bit. How have I never tried any of their products? Fail, B. Fail. And YSL, of course has one of the best mascaras that I have ever tried. Every one of their products scream class. The representative of each brand schooled us on not only the history of each brand, but their newest products as well. These ladies knew their stuff!

Next we scooted on over to Giorgio Armani…

Le Meiter de Beaut…

…and a showcase of some of the newest and most popular fragrances in Neiman Marcus.

First of all, I NEED all of the lippies in Mr. Armani’s newest collection. Secondly, I know I’m not much of a fragrance wearer (not by choice…perfumes usually trigger migraines) but I was thisclose to buying Elie Saab’s newest.

Thisclose.

The bell rung and we weren’t scent (haha, get it?) to third period where we experienced a lil’ Chantecaille…

Estee Lauder…

Bobbi Brown…

…and Kate Sommerville.

Yes finally! I finally know how to say Chantecaille correctly. This brand was perhaps my favorite of all of the new ones I was introduced to because it’s cruelty-free and preservative-free. Both are hard to find among higher-end cosmetics and I respect a brand that can do this while producing superb cosmetics with pretty packaging.

Kate Sommerville is all about skincare. Fancy shmancing skincare at that…

The bell rung and we were sent to 4th period where I was introduced to Tom Ford’s fragrances…

I’ve heard of his cosmetic line (not currently sold in Neiman Marcus) but didn’t know that he had a fragrance line too. Ah-mazing!

Laura Mercier…

Don’t even get me started on the love I have for this brand. Don’t even! I practically shrieked when I rolled up on the LM counter. What can I say? I still find that foundation to be one of the best I’ve tried. Ever.

Chanel…

What an adorable collection. And can you believe that outside their polishes and mascaras, I haven’t tried anything else from Chanel? What the what?

…and we ended the school day with a little Trish McEvoy.

We were then gathered for recess where we all went to take a peek at Deborah Lippman’s newest polishes.

And because I’ve owned three and sing their praises, I took a pic of my skincare BFF.

What a fantastic way to spend a Saturday! I got to hang out with my girls AND learn a lil’ somethin’ somethin’ on the beauty level. I left Neiman Marcus with a Ice Cube smug on my face like  “It was a good day.” Indeed it was.

Shouts out to the Neiman Marcus team who allowed us to the opportunity to do something like this. Being a blogger has its perks but when department stores open their doors early to allow you to get behind the scenes on their products, well, you feel all fuzzy wuzzy inside.

See any brands you like?

Cos Bar now at Target!

Yo yo yo! Where my Target beauty lovers at? I have this ritual. Every Saturday morning after I leave the gym. I go to Target. For no real reason either. It’s own my way home. That’s reason enough, right? I also like to take some peeps at the new additions down the beauty lanes.

If you’re a regular Target beauty shopper, you see some awesome new finds from The Shops of Target. Target has partnered with several business owners of speciality stores to give customers the opportunity to purchase some really cool products. One of those businesses is Cos Bar.

Native to NYC, owner Lily Garfield moved to Aspen and launched Cos Bar. It’s a groovy brand and I’d love to see a boutique with products like these in my streets. The collection includes a ton of beauty baubles including body care products, bath accessories, beauty tools, manicure essentials and cosmetic bags. I’m featuring a few of the goodies from the line.

Oh! And if you’re a budget-conscious gal like moi, each product is under $20. Hollaaaaa!

Skincare wise, Cos Bar has everything from body washes to body butters. This Orange Citrus Body Butter ($6) smells divine…

….a little bit of Cos Bar history.

And ingredient-wise…

I thought this brand would be a little more on the preservative-free side but alas it’s not. :(

But still, it’s a fragrant body butter (and not overly fragrant either) that does a great job at bustin’ ash without the greasy feeling. So that’s good. For zee eyebrows, Cos Bar has these adorable tweezers…

For $4, they do a darn good job at a pluckin’! Careful though…after a few uses, the print started to rub off a bit.

Which made me drop a tear. I get emotional over things like that. Cos Bar also has falsies!

*gulp* I have yet to master the art of applyin’ and rockin’ lashes but I have declared 2012 as the year for when I start rockin’ the falsies. That said, stay tuned for a review of these. A pair of 3 falsies ain’t bad for $9. Am I right?

Cos Bar also has some nail polishes and y’all KNOW I’ve got to check those out. I’m anxious to do some more peering at peering at Cos Bar and since I’m at my neighborhood Target at least twice a week, that’ll be easy. I am so impressed with Target’s ability to show entrepreneurs some love by bringing their products in stores nationwide. As if I needed another reason to love big red. 8)

It’s moving day!

20120518-140949.jpg

Yes again. If you’ve been reading Clumps since 2007, you’ve seen me go through 6 moves in 2 states and 3 cities. Bananas, right? While a lot of people are still in the same home they grew up in, I haven’t lived in the same house for more than 2 years since I graduated from high school.

Which of course means I could probably teach a class on “How To Move Your Life Without Loosing Your Mind”. Seriously. This move, however, is a special once because this it’s “our” first place together. When we got married Epsoso moved in on my former bachelorette pad and when that lease ended we couldn’t move quickly enough to secure a larger house. One that gave me a beauty room and office and Esposo a studio.

So yeah. My arms are beyond sore and how my legs are still functioning is beyond me. Wish me luck!

Oh! And I’ll need lots of advice on beauty room decor so stay tuned for those posts. Have a great weekend!

How do I save on beauty buys? Glad you asked!

I’m cheap. Yeah, I said it and I’m not ashamed. I’ve been a frugal somethin’ ever since I’ve been on my own and I make no apologies about it. And if anything, 4 years of college taught me how to stretch a dollar. Don’t believe me? Give a college student $10 and see how they can manage to put gas in their cars, eat dinner AND rent a movie. Seriously.

And despite being a beauty blogger who loves higher-end products and drugstore deals, I have managed to learn how to save on those beauty goodies. And here’s how….

  • I buy multipurpose products. For realsies. Is my shampoo suitable to also be used as a face wash and body wash? Yup!
  • I shop at my friend’s houses. I have a girlfriend that is forever getting rid of beauty goodies to make room for new goodies. One girl’s trash is another girl’s treasure. I need a new blush and instead of spending $14 on the one I’ve got my eyes on, I shop a girlfriend’s beauty bag and score the one she’s barely touched. Hollers!
  • I only buy things that are on sale or if I have a coupon. I blame Mama Clumps for this one. My eyes usually only target products or stands that have displays with the word “SALE” glowing above them. I don’t care if I’m at a drugstore or department store, I’ll wait a few weeks until my item of choice goes on sale before I even consider purchasing it.
  • I keep inventory. Okay. I know you’re going to laugh at me but this can actually be REALLY helpful. Keeping inventory of the products I have helps me decide what I need and don’t need.
  • I make a monthly budget. No one likes budgets. And you know it’s true. In the perfect world, we’d want to spend as much money as we could without ever going to debt. But this isn’t a perfect world and so as “adult” as they sound, budgets keep me on track. I have finally goten to a place where I really stick to ‘em too. Spend only $50 a month on beauty products? No problemo!

What are some of your budget basics and how do you save money on the everyday things? Tell me!
