TMI Tuesday: Wait, you’ve never been to the gynecologist?

I have been getting so many emails about future posts to do for TMI Tuesdays. Some were a little out there (and not in a good way) but most were great discussion topics that I think a lot of us gals can relate to.

Take going to the gynecologist, for example. Linda in Arizona suggested that I do a post on the importance of going to the gyno.

Here’s the thing about going to the gyno…there’s nothing pretty about it. It isn’t like going to the dentist where you may leave with a bag of dental goodies and whatnot. Going to the gyno is a total invasion of privacy. There is nothing exciting or fun about whipping your panties off, sliding your feet into metal stirrups and having your girly parts examined by someone who don’t even know THAT well.

But, my sisters…it has to get done. There’s no way around it. Every woman should be getting pap smears regularly. It makes no sense for us to spend hundreds and thousands of dollars on beautifying our bodies on the outside just to ignore our reproductive systems. Seriously y’all.

I was chit chatting with a girlfriend of mine a few weeks ago about how annoyed I get about having to go to the gyno. I’m all like…

“I hate when my gyno asks me questions while she’s feeling around my cervix. I mean, does she really think I care to answer random questions while I feel her hand on the inside of my stomach? Don’t you hate when that happens?”

Girlfriend of mine goes silent. Which is totally uncharacteristic for her. And then she says it.

“Well,” she says. “I’ve never been to the gynecologist.”

And I’m just like…

…because in some warped world, I think that most women my age have been to the gyno at least once. I get that health insurance is sky high. I also understand the fear of doctors’ offices. However, I know that there are free pap smears at health fairs and clinics. As women, we have got to care about our reproductive health the same way (if not more) we care about new lipglosses, shoes and purses. Unlike a purse or a new hairstyle, investing in your reproductive health can be the difference between life and death.

As a matter of fact, instead of texting your gal pal if to see if she’s seen the newest episode of Keeping Up With the Kardashian’s (gags), keep it real and say, “Hey sister friend, you’ve been to the gynecologist in the past year, haven’t you?” And if she hasn’t, don’t judge her but motivate her to make an appointment with the quickness.

‘Fess up. Are you a woman who has never been to a gynecologist? Or maybe you have gone and have some tips for those who haven’t been just yet. And what’s your preference? A male gynecologist or lady gynecologist? Or does it not matter? While my current gynecologist is a man, I much prefer a lady. I mean, I’m sure he’s seen fifty ‘leven vags in his lifetime and mine is no different, but still….

What say you?

Happy Thanksgiving 2011!

Is it just me or is Fall prettier this year? I didn’t even know Florida had Fall. I’m so used to seeing green trees and green grass but for the first time EVER, I’ve been falling in love with the changing of the season.

Mama Clumps’ house is decked out to the fullest.

…and with just a few Christmas-y stuffs on the horizon.

I so love this time of year. And I so love my Clumps of Mascara and I am beyond thankful for your love and support.

Loves y’all and have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

TMI Tuesday: Aunt Flow’s Baggage

My first capture of leaves changing in FL. Woot!

Okay, I don’t think I’ve ever done a “TMI Tuesday” post, but let’s pretend that it’s a normal act here on Clumps of Mascara, mkay? Although I can be quite prude-ish, I really do enjoy TMI (too much information) conversation. It’s the free spirit neo-hippie in me and discussing things that used to be taboo can be enlightening and informative.

But of course, I’m a little immature so they can be funny too. 8)

One of my favorite TMI discussions that I love rapping with my gal pals is talking about our periods. As much as I haaaaaaate that red monster, I find it fascinating. I think our reproductive systems are just so complex and interesting. I could talk about it all day. Especially since, growing up, I didn’t talk about it much. You know, because everyone was so embarrassed or whatever. I don’t really care anymore. The fact of the matter is, women all over the world have periods, will have periods or had periods. We are all in sync. I’ll be Justin (haha, see what I did there?).

Soooo, while I’ve always been a pad wearer (because tampons are just too painful for me considering I’ve suffered from dysmenorrhea for years), I’m thinking about switching to using menstrual cups. I’ve got my eyes on the Diva Cup. Have an open mind here, okay? There’s nothing particularly attractive about ANY of Aunt Flow’s baggage, but in attempts to green up my life a bit, a menstrual cup sounds, dare I say it….cool.

Some of y’all out there are probably already freaking out and when I first heard about menstrual cups, I was too. I was all like,

“Wait, so there’s basically a cup of blood just chillin’ under my cervix?”

“Won’t it spill or leak out?”

“It’s reusable? But how….”

“Won’t it hurt going in?”

And while I haven’t tried the Diva Cup yet, my apprehension has been eased a bit after reading a very honest blog post from one of my favorite bloggers. In her comment section, many women admit to using the Diva Cup and products like it. Soooo, they are saving a crap ton of money (Diva Cup @ $30 can last for 10 years) and they aren’t exposing their lady parts to chemically saturated pads and tampons. Aaaaand, they aren’t clogging landfills. Excuse me, but with that many benefits, shouldn’t we all be wearing menstrual cups?

Maybe.

The learning curve will probably suck for me but I’m willing to give it a try. And as Caitlin mentioned in her post, she felt using the menstrual cup helped her be a little more connected to her period because she was able to monitor her flow. That part sold me. I’m obsessed with my reproductive health and I like the idea of being able to see what’s goin’ on up and around there. A girlfriend of mine said she used to be squeamish at the thought of it but figured if she could pick her dog’s poop a few times a day, getting that close to her own body’s fluids wouldn’t be THAT bad.

So yeah. I’m going to give the Diva Cup a try.

What do you think? Would you try menstrual cups or do you think you’ll stick to pads and tampons?

Also — let me know what you think about these kind of posts. If you have any ideas for what we can talk about on TMI Tuesday, let a sista know. 8) Or, if TMI Tuesday scares you a bit, let me know that too.

Introducing…Mr. and Mrs. Clumps of Mascara!

Surprise! Most folx have been like, “Is this a joke, B? We didn’t even know you were dating someone!”  What can I say? I’m not one of those gals that is alwaaaays talking about her boyfriend. It took quite some time for The Guy to make his appearance on Clumps of Mascara. Despite sharing a lot of my life online, there is one thing that I like to keep private…my relationship. Don’t get me wrong. Some bloggers do a great job at publicly talking about their spouses and significant others and posting their pictures from time to time. Simply put…

…that ain’t how I roll. Am I head over heels in love with my best friend? Yup. Do I blog about it? Nope. Our love is our love and quite frankly, I think it’s better expressed between us than over blogs and social media. Especially on Facebook. I also kept my relationship status on Facebook hidden. I’m so old fashioned. I don’t believe in telling the world that you’re in a relationship or shacking up. I know. I’m just weird like that.

The Esposo (Mr .Clumps’ official name b/c I HATE the names Hubs and Hubby) is everything I prayed for. He’s a musical genius that is ridiculously talented in so many areas. He’s the one that stayed up until 2am almost every night to help get Clumps rolling again when a virus attacked it. He supports me when I have beauty events. Whether it’s take pictures or helping me brainstorm, Esposo is there to bring about his geeky commentary. Falling in love with him was just the icing on the cake. Marrying him on 11/11/11 just felt….right.

Many young girls and women have fantasies of having huge weddings with a beautiful white dress and being surrounded by friends and family members. I think that’s a beautiful vision. But unfortunately, it wasn’t what I wanted. Aaaaand, let’s face it. Even budget weddings can be pricey. Call me crazy, but I’d rather pay Sallie Mae off then invest a few thousand dollars in a wedding. Sure we could have asked our parents but at the end of the day, we would have much preferred to do something and private between the two of us. And so we did. Plus, what’s more important? A huge wedding or a debt-free life? Um….yeah.

A lot of our friends and family members were offended that we didn’t invite them. Instead of congratulating us, they questioned WHY we were doing it this way. I get it. I get that people wanted to celebrate with us. But at the same time, I hope they realize that the love Esposo and I share trump any overpriced occasion. While we didn’t want to go into debt for a wedding, we also wanted to make something special of our union. I thought I would be bummed out about not having this big ole’ wedding. I thought I’d miss not wearing a wedding dress but I didn’t .

Yep. I wore a t-shirt. Got it on sale for $10. Woot! After our wedding, we went to one of our favorite places…

But of course. I think all brides and grooms (who are big kids) should celebrate their weddings at Disney. The congrats, treats and freebies made the day even better. We were both on cloud nine the entire day. Which is all I could have ever asked for on my wedding date.

I have no regrets and would not have changed a thing. The support of those of us that love us means the world to me. It’s not easy for everyone to understand an un-traditional wedding. Especially in America where many women empty their bank accounts to afford their weddings. I’m glad we did it this way. I like the idea of focusing on a marriage first instead of the wedding. And who says we can’t have a wedding somewhere down the line?  We plan to take couple pictures soon and have a slew of mini honeymoons that we plan to take in 2012. New Orleans and the Bahamas are up next!

I’m happy. And those who have been around Esposo and I can see that. A few years ago I labeled myself as chronically single. I attended the weddings of friends and while happy for them, I questioned if there was someone out there for me. While I enjoyed being a single woman, I also thought about falling in love, getting married and starting a family with that special someone.

It’s funny what happens when you just let go.

It’s mega cliche but things really start happening when you least expect it. God’s love and love from friends and family members is the one thing that kept me going when I wanted to give up.

Let love live.

Seriously.

Oh! And folx have been asking me if we have a registry. I recently did one on Target. Feels kinda weird putting it out there but I’ve always been told to not get in the way of people wanting to give.

XOXO,

B

Highlights from Lucky Mag Dior Pretty Party

Okay, seriously….I had the BEST time at the Lucky Dior party. The BEST time. Even better are the pictures that captured that event. Having a guy that understands your level of geekiness is one thing. But having one that also takes a day off from work to help you take beautiful pictures is something else. We are two peas in and pod who have an enormous passion for photography. I think I’ll keep him.

Ahhh, but enough of the mushy stuff. Let’s jump right on it and talk about the awesomeness that was this party. It’s not everyday that I get the opportunity to host or even attend events like this in Florida. As a beauty blogger, I am forever struggling to find beauty events. The venues exist. The interest is there but alas…Central and South Florida are not big jumping grounds for the beauty industry. Although, I think they should be. When Lucky Mag approached me the opportunity to host a Dior Pretty Party, I quickly obliged. Because, um…who doesn’t love Dior?

I mean, hellooo…..

Lucky Mag said that I could invite 10 of my girlfriends. I have a lot of friends and family members in Miami but most aren’t obsessively in love with beauty the way I am. But I know who is. Beauty and fashion bloggers! I scrolled through my e-rolodex and contacted a few who I knew would appreciate and really enjoy an event like this. I reached out to them and got several resounding “YES!! I’ll come.” responses.

The day of the event arrived and I scurried over to the Dior counter in Bloomingdale’s at Aventura Mall. The makeup artists greeted me with lots of hugs and handshakes. They took me over to a nice little section of the store that was sectioned off us for us beauty gals. The Guy and I took took lots of pics and munched on some delicious cupcakes.

And uh…delicious is a total understatement. They were slammin’! Guests slowly started trinkling in and I greeted everyone with hugs. You know because this is the South…. We believe in huggin’ folx.

Tweets under the hashtag #LuckyDior went a flyin’ and everyone floated around meeting each other. Within minutes we were all giggling like we’d been girlfriends for years. Then our guide Sheba took the stand.

Aside from being my new beauty BFF, Sheba Vignale is Dior’s National Skincare Specialist. She travels internationally hosting and teaching events like this one. She was so so helpful, humorous and her energy radiated throughout the space. While Sheba talked to us about Dior Cosmetics’ Top 10 Products, makeup artists passed around the products and let us play in them.

Some of us got our faces done and others of us did our own faces. I even convinced my college friend Iris to try some red lipstick.

Sheba did my face!

And how she made my brows look halfway decent with that eyebrow pencil is beyond me. With beauty playtime coming to an end, Sheba announced that 10 gals would receive giftcards to be spent at the Dior counter. BUT only to those who answered the beauty trivia questions correctly. Considering there were 12 of us total (I got my own giftcard. Woot!), just about everyone got a card and we headed over to the Dior counter to buy up some goodies. And we posed for pics too.

Ohmigoodness, we had soooo much fun. I am wishing on a star that I get the opportunity to host and attend more events like this in Florida. It’s a rarity yo.

Special Thanks:
-Lucky Mag — Thank you so soooooo much!
-Bloomingdale’s in Aventura Mall
-The Dior counter and their wonderful makeup artists
