NYX Sheer Tube Gloss

Yo mamacitas…been looking for a bangin’ new lip gloss? Like I really even need to ask that question. 9 times out of 10, us beauty lovin’ girly girls will purchase a lip gloss over any other beauty product. I didn’t conduct a formal survey…such my loca assumption. :) I’ve been rockin’ some of these NYX glosses like a mad woman these days.

(l-r) Pink Caramel, Brilliant, Luscious

You want to see a swatch of that hot pink one, uh? You know you do!

OCC Lip Tars a mixin’

My my my…what more needs to be said about these kids? Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics has wooed me in the nail polish and loose eye shadow department, but I would be a tad bit remiss if I didn’t declare my love for the Lip Tars. I’ll do a formal swatches soon but to tease you a bit, I did some mixing and made my own shade.

A little bit of this and a little bit of that…

And look what I made.

FOTD Friday: How to Wear A Red Lip

Hmmm mmmm, so y’all thought I was done talking about red lips, uh? Nope! You see…there are STILL several brown girls who think they can’t rock a red lip. Seriously, y’all? I can understand not wanting to wear a red lip work or class as it tends to be a little bold in those surroundings. But haven’t you had some moments when you just felt…”bad”? Fearless? Powerful? Some days call for a red lip. And so, my sisters…we’re going to find some ways to ease into wearing one.

You red-y?

First, remember this…if you’re not used to wearing the color red in the first place, it’s going to be mega hard getting used to wearing it on your lips. Take baby steps with the color. If you can’t rock it on the lips just yet, try wearing a red flower.

Yes, I know it’s very Niecy Nash of me but it’s Spring in Florida and this is how we roll, son! Ha! Okay, so even if you’re not down with wearing a red flower in your hair, try red finger nail polish.

Orly’s Poison Apple and Zoya’s America look stunning on the nails and can make you feel a wee bit more comfortable about rocking a red lip.

When it comes to wearing red lips, I always like to have a pretty neutral eye look. For today’s look I only used Urban Decay’s Primer Potion in Sin on the lid and liner on the waterline and lower lash line.

See the difference the liner on the left (my right) eye makes? Oh yeah! The reds we will be using today are MAC’s Port Red and Maybelline’s Are You Red-dy.

Never eeeever judge a lipstick by how it looks on the outside. What looks to be scary and highly pigmented lipstick can really be a moderately build-able lipstick. Don’t be intimidated!

Check out the differences between Port Red and Are You Red-dy.

Do you see how Port Red has a bit of a blue undertone to it? If you’re not used to rocking reds, this may not be the kind of red you want to start off with. One light coat of Are You Red-dy gives the lip a little red tint.

Rock this for a while and then head on other to step two. So you’re red-y (okay, I’ll stop…hehe) to get a little more red in, uh? Careful now. One swipe of Port Red is pretty heavy.

But…wowsers!!

If the red is still TOO red for you, you can always tone it down with a lip liner. Take MAC’s Vino for example…

This liner has a little pink in it and will darken the red. But, my sisters…puhlease do NOT forget to blend. The following is not a good look.

Yes…blend blend blend!

So while this lip is slightly darker than the previous one, it’s still red. I LOVE red lipstick. I’m not the type to wear it all the time but I love it when I’m feelin’ like a bad mamma jamma. So again, I urge my brown girls out there…try a red lip. No, you’re lips aren’t too big and no, your complexion is NOT too dark. There are many ways to rock a red lip. Do what works for you and feel confident doing it.

Love y’all!

Celeb Spotlight: Letoya’s coral lips

I’ve spotlighted Letoya on Clumps twice before. She is becoming one of my favorite celebrities when it comes to rocking beautiful make-up looks. She killed me softly with her purple lip and had me running home to try a nude lip. My girl has done it again with a beautiful coral lip.

Stunning! You see…coral is one of those colors that I’ve never learned to appreciate on brown skin. It never seemed flattering. Letoya has proved me wrong. In its subtly, her coral lip is absolutely beautiful and goes great with her coral dress.

I’ve checked my lippy stash and can’t seem to locate a coral lipstick or gloss. Any ideas? What do you use to achieve a beautiful coral lip?

Natural Beauty: ONE hits Target

I just love how natural products and brands are becoming more widely available. AND affordable. I mean, two years ago you couldn’t find eco-friendly lip balms in your neighborhood Target.

Say hello to ONE.

ONE is brand that not only believes in healthy and natural formulations, but they also package their products in eco-friendly housing.

From the products that I tried, the skin conditioning bar ($6.49) is my favorite. It is full of lavender oil goodness but the packaging is also made from recyclable material.

I’m impressed at the relatively small ingredients list! The bar is amazing. It slathers on like a regular body butter but it isn’t greasy. And I love the fact that the smell isn’t too overpowering.

ONE also has hair products including solid shampoo and conditioner bars ($6.99).

Don’t judge its size. One of these is equivalent to three 8 oz bottles of shampoo. I haven’t tried it on my locs just yet but I will do a formal review soon.

We’ve covered body and hair so what could we be missing? Ah! Cosmetics, of course. ONE has lip butter balms ($2.99).

While I’m not the biggest fan of the scent, this shea butter based balm feels great on the lips without drying them out. The ingredients list makes me smile.

I’m lovin’ it! You can find ONE at any Target location.

Have you seen ONE in your Target yet?

Maybelline ColorSensational: Pinks!

It’s the last (wo)man standing the Maybelline’s ColorSensational color family. We covered Red, chatted with Natural and showed loved to Plum. Time for Pink’s debut. Ready?

But wait…first, let me be honest. I’m not a fan of lighter pink lipsticks on darker skin. In fact remember that controversial post from last year about MAC’s Sugar Sweet collection? Yikes! Light pink lipstick is not up my alley. But perhaps Born With It can change my mind.

Maybe?

Nope. My face says it all. This does not scream flattering to me.

The best way to tone down a lipstick like this is to:
a) Use a darker lip liner.
b) Use a darker gloss.

The glosses that accompany Born With It are other pinks. Surprisingly Raspberry Shorbet did it some justice.

That’s a little better. It is still a wee bit pinker than I would like but I won’t jump off of a bridge over it.

Any pink lipstick fans out there?

Lip balms=love

Have I told y’all how much I love lip balms? They are such staples for me. And I have them everywhere. In every purse. In my car. In my office. In the medicine cabinet. You won’t catch me anywhere without them.

Lip balms do something that most glosses and lipsticks can not do…moisturize. And for that, I can appreciate them. Very rarely will you see me applying a gloss or lipstick without having applied a lip balm first. Many moons ago I reviewed MAC’s lip conditioner here. As you can see, I am still faithfully rocking it. But it’s not my favorite.

My favorite would be Korres’ Lip butter in Jasmine.

Oh.mi.goodness. I have been using this paraben-free $10 lip butter for months. And look at that….I still have quite a bit left. I love the way it smells and it feels just divine on the lips. And then there’s Burt’s Bee’s lip balm..

I’ve purchased about 3 of these. For under $3, they aren’t bad at all. Another paraben-free lip balm that delivers but I hate the packaging. It is SO hard to open. But The Merry Hempster’s lip balm isn’t.

This vegan lip balm so rocks! The peppermint flavor lasts for hours as it conditions. You can find more about this brand (sold at Whole Foods) here. They have so many different flavors. Must try them all! When I’m in the mood to be the little bee that I am, I am all over Oyin’s Honeystick.

This is my third tube. I literally ate the first two. Nah, I’m kidding. But aside from loving to support wonderful Jamyla and family, I just love the way the Honeystick feels and tastes. And when I want people to give me the double look and ask “WTF is that?” I pull out this kid.

The organic EOS lip balm in its spherical wonderment just looks cool, uh? One glide and I can conquer both the top and bottom lips at the same time. It is shea butter based and was a gift from Mommy.

Lip balms made it in my Top Products of 2009 video for a good reason. Ain’t nothin’ sexy about chapped lippies.

Do you wear balms? Which one is your favorite?

Celeb Spotlight: Letoya’s nude lips

Now y’all know I don’t keep up with celebrities too much but every time I see Letoya Luckett, I am just in love with her make-up! Remember when she wore that insane purple lip? She is just absolutely stunning. I LOVE this look on her. Nude lips, volumized lashes and bronzed cheeks. I also detect a little green liner on the waterline which adds a nice unexpected pop of color. Total perfection.

And I won’t even get on how gorgeous her hair is either. She is just one fabulous lady. Rock on. Letoya!

I posted about rocking a nude lip here but mine doesn’t look anywhere near as awesome as Letoya’s. Tips anyone? Maybe I need a super nude glosss. But not too nude because it may too cool for my warm complexion. Hmm…

How do you rock a nude lip?
