Amor de Lacquer: Zoya Spring 2012 – True and Fleck Effect collections

I love nail polish brands that stay up on the trends. Some choose to ignore them completely and others become annoyingly obsessed with them. Zoya sits right in the middle and still remains to shock us beauty bloggers. I’m shooting you with 2 collections in one post but only because I didn’t want you to have to wait for me to crank out another post.

I’m so nice, uh? And modest too. 8)

First up, it’s the True collection!

This collection is full of traditional Spring-y shades but with a TON of personality to them. Now that I think about it…they aren’t so traditional at all. Which is quite refreshing. I also found that each and every one of these polishes were opaque at 2 coats. Yes. TWO. That hardly ever happens with softer creams. Zoya is boss, yo.

Skylar is a silvered slate blue metallic. It looks a bit muted outside but when some light hits it…oh baby, this blue is the bomb. I don’t think I have a shade like this. The best thing about it is while it does have glitter specs in it, it isn’t difficult to remove. Very pretty. Oh, and I know like 13 kids under the age of 5 with the name Skylar. It’s one of those popular names, ya know? Like Brittany. Pfft.

Bevin is a pale sage green green that looks to be a little on the dusty/gray side. I love it though. It’s so mod and unusual. It is definitely Spring-y in that it reminds me a lot of…well, okay…it doesn’t really remind me of anything. It’s just so darn groovy.

Farah is a latte beige cream. Want to know the truth about this color? I don’t know if I like it or not. I know, I know. I should have made up my mind by now but I just….I don’t know. On one hand, I think shades like this look a little fugly on my complexion and on the other hand, I think it looks classy. I just…I don’t know about you, Farah, darling. I’ll tell you one thing about this kid…she is one opaque mama!

Tru is described as a  gilded purple orchid metallic. Dear heavens this shade is gorgeous. It is so up my alley, y’all. Yes, yes, I know….I pretty much love purple everything but this is just stunning.

Cho is a full coverage, vanilla shimmer metallic and it took everything in me to not remove the C and add a P. P for Pho. I love pho. Anywhoovers, this shade….*sigh* I am still on the fence with it like I am with Farah. I guess I’m not used to seeing these kind of shades on me and so I have to get used to them.

Lotus is a full coverage, light lotus purple metallic and another winner in my book. As the description says, it’s a lighter purple so it isn’t as rich in color like Tru. It has a bit more gray in it and you can see neon pink shimmer in it when it hits the sun.

Must Haves:
-Tru. For reals. Don’t even play around and NOT get this one.
-Bevin. Because have you seen a green so pretty AND so opaque?

Next up is the Fleck Effect collection. Keep in mind that these 3 polishes are intended to go on top of other shades. They are layering polishes. Can you wear them solo? Well, yeah…. No one is going to stop you from doing that. But they REALLY come to life when layered on top of nail polishes. I think flakies look amazing over dark polishes. Ideally blacks, greens, burgundies and murky purples. Zoya is giving us 3 special kind of flakie polishes. What makes them special? They are emerged in a colorful base. I’ve never seen that before! Go Zoya go!

The shades…

Opal – Green tint with mylar green fleck effect
Chloe – Pink tint with mylar green and gold fleck effect
Maisie – Blue tint with mylar green fleck effect

Aaaand, up close.

Just to give you an idea of how they do over light and dark colors, I swatched a nail with each shade. The base for this is Zoya’s Cho.

Not my idea of a good time. The party really starts over a darker base. The base here is Zoya’s Envy, a dark green polish, almost black.

Pretty cool, uh? Please forgive me as I get acquainted with this new lens that I have. Considering flakies are the newest trend, I would definitely scoop these up if I were you. You can never have too many. Maisie and Chloe look a lot alike but if I had to choose one over the other, I’d go with Chloe.

This collection will be available on January 13th at Zoya.com. Get your pennies ready!

Amor de Lacquer: OPI Muppets collection, Part 2

Yes, I’m totally nuts for just NOW posting this but don’t blame me. Okay, yes…blame me but love my anyway, kay? 8) Yay for Part II of OPI’s The Muppets collection. If you missed Part 1 (The Glitters), don’t forget to check it out. The other 6 siblings of the collection aren’t glittery, but they are just as fantastic.

Let’s take a look-see, shall we?

Wocka Wocka really isn’t ALL that unique but it applied beautifullllly on my nails. I’m pretty sure I have a color like this but I can’t put my finger on why I’m so attracted to this deep berry. It is absolutely gorgeous.

Meep Meep Meep is a beautiful fuchsia that has flakies in it! I love spotting flakies in polish. They are so totally rare. This, of course, makes Triple M and a triple threat. It’s a bright fuchsia that has a darling name AND contains flakies. Ooooh yeah.

Designer…De Better looked to be your average silver foil-y polish but a closer look makes it appear as if a little cinnamon was sprinkled in that silver formula. I was quick to write this off as an average silver polish but it’s actually quite fantastic.

Pepe’s Purple Passion. Never mind that I had to do a Google-search to see who Pepe actually was. Known as The Muppet’s Prawn, Pepe used to be a chef until he was mistaken for a meal. Hilarious, right? This shade definitely does Pepe justice. Like Meep Meep Meep, this dark purple will be my Vamp Shade of the Season. Flakies pretty much make everything better.

Warm & Fozzie. Despite not remembering much about The Muppets, I do remember Fozzie. What a cutie pie that guy is. This shade is SO him. This metallic copper actually really compliments my complexion.

Animal-istic. LOL @ how Animal’s name is Animal. That just cracks me up. This bright red contains a few specks of glitter. It’s really nothing out of the ordinary which is a shame because Animal is one unique dude.

Being the glitter lover that I am, I , of course love the glitters most from this 12-piece collection, but if I had to choose some must haves from these babies, they would be:

-Wocka Wocka Wocka: I just can’t explain how beautiful this is. You may have a dupe in your collection, but with a name like this Wocka times 3, you just HAVE to have this one.

-Warm & Fozzie: Chances are you don’t have a polish like this in your collection. It’s so cool!

-Meep Meep Meep: It’s a red polish with flakies. Enough said.

Got your eyes on any of ‘em?

Guest Post: Mimi’s Peacock Nails

I was quite flattered to be asked by Brittany to write a guest post for Clumps, you have no idea! It’s like a blogging celebrity thing. The blogging equivalent to Paula Deen asking you for your macaroni & cheese recipe.

I was Googling around, looking for patterns to inspire some new nail designs when I found this picture of a rug.

It was so simple, yet definitely captured the essence of peacocks (side note- peahens really got short end of the stick. Nature definitely did not leave any beauty for them!).

I freehanded the design. I bet there is probably a nail stamping plate that you could use to easily stamp the light green background pattern, but sometimes there is great joy and satisfaction in doing something completely by hand.

I used:

From left to right: Sally Hansen Fairy Teal, Orly Sweet Peacock, Spoiled I Only Eat Salads and a mixture of Sally Hansen Polar Bare + Ulta Snow White for the base white color.

Second side note: Have you ever seen a peacock fly? Up until recently, I didn’t even know they could, figured they were too heavy, that all those feathers must drag them down. I recently saw a video of one taking flight, it’s quite spooky how graceful and quiet they are. Birds can be sneaky. Never forget that.

Christmas with my Milani JewelFX polishes

You know what I’m going to use as ornaments next year? Nail polishes.

How epic would that be? Epic beyond epic. I’m like Mama Clumps in that regard. I also do themed Christmas trees. I’m not a big fan of random ornaments all over the tree. And considering how much I love nail polishes, I think a nail polish tree would be quite fitting.

Of course I’d have to run that by Esposo but I’m sure he’d be down with it. Kinda. If you’re one of those people that really get into Christmas tree decorations and you know you’ll spending the holidays with a beauty lover, hide some of those lovely Milani JewelFX polishes in and around the tree…

..or stockings.

With darling little Tartan Tips tags attached, you can easily print who the gift is for. I am an enormous fan of these glittery topcoats.

Go Milani go. Of course you can get them at drugstores, Target and anywhere you can find Milani products..

Amor de Lacquer: Orly Holiday Soiree collection

Yay! Another pretty cool nail polish collection from Orly!

Orly is back for the holidays and hitting us with one unique holiday collection. Because nail polish brands have been giving us holiday collections for many years now, they can become a little redundant. Most brands play it safe and stick with different variations of reds and greens. So glad to see Orly step outside of the box. Woot!

Androgynie is described as a black with multicolor glitter and this is perhaps the one shade of the collection that has nail polish lovers going gaga. This shade is absolutely stunning. From hexagon glitter to beautiful holographic glittery specs, this polish has it all. However, because of the thin black base, the glitter just sinks to the bottom of the bottle. Your best bet is to roll this baby on its side or turn it upside down a few minutes before applying. Yeah, that’s a little too much trouble but this polish is worth it.

Ma Cherie is a red creme that has certainly been done before. Although watery, I managed to reach an opaque finish with only one coat. That kinda rocks.

Oui is a purple multicolor shimmer that looks stunning in natural lighting. I can’t wait for my nails to grow back because I think this will look 10x better on my longer nails than on my nubbies.

Au Champagne is described as a white frosted matte and I am in looooove with this shade. I don’t think I’ve ever seen such a beautiful frosty white. It wasn’t as watery as its siblings and while it took a good 3 coats to reach an opaque finish, I absolutely loved the outcome of this. Looks like buttercream frosting on my nails. Yummy!

Ingénue is a pink multicolor shimmer that is the pinker version of Ma Cherie. Even with 2 coats it wasn’t as opaque as I wanted it to be. I can still see my nail line.

Le Chateau is a dark creme green that actually looks black. In fact, the only time it looked green was when I was standing outside. Some people have issues with navy blues and dark greens that look black but it’s never bothered me. At the very least, it’ll make a fab base for layering. I added a coat of Glitter Gal’s Lizard Belly on my ring ringer just for fun.

Must Haves:
-Androgynie: While it takes some work for its true splendor to really shine, this polish is just magnificent. Even looking at the bottle puts me in a trance.
-Au Champagne: Best white polish ever. EVER.

These polishes seemed to be a little more watery than usual. While not a complete turn-off, you’ll definitely want to use very small brush strokes when applying them. Not a bad holiday collection. They stuck with the red and green but added a few gems to the collection and that’s always pleasing to us nail polish lovers. If you catch these in Sally Beauty Supply, they wil probably come with cute ‘n portable nail files. I think they’ll work well as stocking stuffers, but you know this nail file snob only uses crystal nail files.

Amor de Lacquer: butter LONDON’s Holiday collection

Although I haven’t reviewed many of their polishes, I am reallllly loving what Butter London has to offer. Formula-wise, these babies are phenomenal. butter LONDON and Founding Creative Director Nonie Creme are giving us three beauty limited edition shades for the holiday season.

Tart With a Heart is described as the life of the party in dazzling “liquid metal” rose pink. I concur. This is a ridiculously awesome pink chrome. I don’t have many chrome polishes and this one has my heart jumping for joy. It is such an unexpected holiday shade. I love it!

Fairy Lights is described as a pale pink parade of glitter carries a dash of grey to tone down the sugar and ramp up the spice. This polish is opaque at 3 coats and has a gorgeous holographic shimmer. It will also work great as a layering polish and really pops with a top coat.

The Black Knight is described as a dark dazzler with a glitter fusion contains black, pink, blue and silver suspended in a black base. You HAVE to see this in person. It was opaque after only 2 coats and it is one stunning glitter. The pink and blue shimmer pop beautifully. This may be one of my favorite nail polish colors of 2011.

butter LONDON’s price point at $14 is pretty steep and if you don’t want to splurge on all of those babies, definitely go for Black Knight. Or you can get grab butter LONDON Holiday Glitter Trio for $36 at butterLONDON.com.

Fall shades from NYX Cosmetics’ Salon Formula nail polishes

Oh snaps! NYX Cosmetics has always been mediocre when it comes to nail polish but they have just stepped their game up with their new nail polishes. 144 of ‘em to be exact. At $4.00 a bottle, I’m thinking that’s there’s got to be a polish with your name on it. While I’m not the traditional “stick to seasonal shades only” kind of gal, I am just lovin’ some of the fall shades that NYX has. Aaaaand, the formula of the polishes are pretty awesome too.

Gold is well…gold. It leans a bit on the orange-y side and has a nice foil-y finish. It almost looks like a lighter caramel with gold dust thrown in it.

Maroon should really have more of a descriptive name because it’s more than just…maroon. Okay, so yeah it is maroon but it has gorgeous bits of peach and neon purple shimmer. The shimmer doesn’t dominate the maroon shade much but its presence is quite complimentary and gorgeous.

Red Wine is a dark red creme that isn’t terribly unique. But never knock a good dark red. They are fantastic shades for nail designs and konading.

Power Red is just that. It is one powerful red! Despite what people say is professional or not, I’d probably rock a red like this to a job interview. This is the kind of red my Mom wouldn’t let me wear until I was in high school. Power Red has a ton of blue in it and if you aren’t the type to wear something as loud as a fire engine red, this one may suit you better.

I used 2 coats for each polish and even without a topcoat, they all had a nice and brilliant shine. The formula of these are nice but can be a tad bit on the watery side. Thin coats is the best route to take. If you’re in the market for new polishes, these aren’t bad. I think the price point at $4.00 is reasonable too. I can’t wait to try these out some of their glitter polishes. I’m impressed, NYX. You do polishes quite well. Get your shop on at NYXCosmetics.com.
