Amor de Lacquer: At Home French Manicures

It’s Amor de Lacquer week!!!! All posts will be related to nail polish and nail care!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MOMMY!!!!

Welcome back to another post from Amor de Lacquer week here at Clumps of Mascara! This is a reader requested post that challenged the mess out of me.

But yall know I love challenges.

Any French manicure fans out there?

I can’t say that I’m one. I used to rock them like crazy in college, though. I would get pink and white gel nails done religiously. See!

Focus on the nails, kids. Ignore the brows and mess dorm room. Here is another French manicure shot.

Oh yes….I wore it out! And I think one of the reasons why I don’t care for the look any more is because I wore it so much. That and I change my polish every day. But I still like to do it on my toes!

There are many ways to do at-home French manicures. While some like to purchase the kits, I find that I can do the same thing that the nail techs do!

Here is what I use:

-White polish…I love Sally Hansen’s InstaDri polish. The enormous wand is great for all-over coverage on the nail.

-Pure Acetone

-A firm brush (I use MAC 212 SE). I got this brush in a gift set and never used it. I found that it works perfectly for french manicures AND polish clean-up.

For this tutorial, we will be polishing these two bare nails.

Start off with polishing the tip of your nails. Don’t worry about neatness here.

Dip your brush into a little acetone…make sure that the brush isn’t TOO wet. You don’t it dripping but make sure that at least the tip of the brush is wet.

At this point, I turn my nails so that they are facing me (uncomfortable, but it works!) and move the brush upward to clean whatever mess I made in my initial application. Because my nail beds are longer, I like to have a significant amount of white on my tips. It just looks better to me.

And viola!

It is really is easy! I think I may play around with different colors on the tips, just for fun. It’s been awhile since I’ve done a tropical manicure and African manicure…the latter really does exist. LOL!

It’s Amor de Lacquer week!!!! All posts will be related to nail polish and nail care!

Welcome to another post of Amor de Lacquer….the series all about nail polish and nail care! Send me your requests, suggestions and ideas to Brittany@ClumpsOfMascara.com.

In honor of Amor de Lacquer Week, I was able to snag some tips from some of my favorite nail bloggers.

Steph’s Closet

What I would give to be Steph’s little sister for a day and rummage in her closet. I would have a field day! Here is what she says is one of the most important tips when it comes to nail care.

“My most important nail tip is moisturize, moisturize and moisturize! A good hand cream (any brand) and cuticle oil (my fave, solar oil) are holy grail products that I can’t live without. All it takes, is a few rubs of creative’s solar oil when you see the first sign of dryness and tada!. It’s amazing! “

Amor de Lacquer: Shades by Barielle, Summer ’09 Collection

It’s Amor de Lacquer week!!!! All posts will be related to nail polish and nail care!

Welcome to another post of Amor de Lacquer….the series all about nail polish and nail care! Send me your requests, suggestions and ideas to Brittany@ClumpsOfMascara.com.

Summer collections already? That’s right! And I couldn’t be more excited. This is my first time playing around in nail polishes by Barielle. Their Sugar Rush collection reminds me of delicious candies and satisfies my chronic candy cravings. And guess what? I am impressed with all of the colors!

And guess what else? There are a ton of creams. Yall know I love cream finishes. Brown girls who only wear different variations of berry colored polishes, brace yourselves for this one. While these colors rock my socks I know others may think they are “too bright”.

I’ll start with the safest color first. LOL!

Cotton Candy

Yum yum! Forget the rides at the fair, just buy me 3 big bags of cotton candy and I am good to go. I am pretty much addicted to the stuff. This color makes me want to lick my nails. HA! I’m not even kidding. It is a fun pink and I thought it was pretty boring in the bottle but it turned out to be fun against my brown skin.

Swizzle Stix

Wow oh wow!! This robin egg blue is the FIRST color like this in my collection. It is absolutely stunning. The application was a little wonky—which can happen with a lot of Big 3 Free polishes but I just adored the outcome. I can’t wait to wear this one on my toes!

Decadence

I wasn’t initially impressed with this color. It looked just “Okay” to me. After rocking it, I have decided that I love it tremendously. What an awesome color! If you can’t quite wear blues or greens, Decadence is the perfect place to start. It isn’t too CRAZY but shows that that you don’t mind “funkin’ up” your polish game a bit. I like it!

Grape Escape

Oh….mi…..goodness! It’s another purple cream, kids. My favorite kind of nail polish ever ever ever ever. Yall hear the echo? Oh yes, this color looks good enough to eat. It seriously looks like a piece of candy. The application of this polish was exceptional. Or maybe it’s because I am bias. I don’t know. Anyway, it is definitely my favorite out of bunch.

Lemondrops

First off, please excuse the application of this polish. There is something about yellows. They always seem to drag down to my cuticles. And clean up is never easy. But honestly, it’s worth it. This color was my official “Makeup Show LA” color. Every time I travel and every event I go to, there is a nail polish color that corresponds with that event. (My birthday-Zoya Tart. Inauguration-Zoya Marry J…see what I mean?) Lemondrops is absolutely beautiful against the brown skin. I think it’s my favorite yellow yet. It’s not TOO bright but isn’t too dull and ashy either. I have to show some colors against clothing or other objects so that yall can see it in a different light.

Go yellow!!

Sweet Addiction

Now this is a different color. I don’t think I have one like this. It reminds me of the ocean. LOL, don’t ask why. Polishes with cream finishes make me so happy. Don’t get me wrong, I am becoming a glitter lover and I can deal with shimmery finishes every now and then but at the end of the day, creams steal my heart. Sweet Addiction is no exception.

I used only 2 coats for each color. I found that some of the polishes were extra thick. I’m not sure why, but it wasn’t fun to deal with. I had to use some polish thinner to get a better formula and once I did that, everything worked out fine! I like Shades by Barielle. They don’t contain any of those yucky chemicals in their polishes (safe for the preggo ladies!) and are $8 a bottle. You can snag them HERE. Expect to see more of their colors from me!

So what do you think? Any of these colors makin’ you swoon?
Tell me!

Your fellow nail polish junkie,

I can’t tell yall how much I love Zoya’s Color Lock Sytem. I love how each product works in conjunction with the other. I love when you use them all together, you can guarantee that your polish will stay put.

What Zoya says about the Color Lock System,

“Use Color Lock System Complete Kit from Step 1-5 to surround and protect great color to make it last! ZOYA’s unique color lock system surrounds polish with a protective barrier against moisture, bubbling, chipping and UV damage.” (source)

In each system you will get one of the following:

-Zoya Remove + nail polish remover (OMG, it is the best EVER!)
-Zoya Anchor basecoat
-Zoya Get Even Ridge filling basecoat
-Zoya Armor top coat & UV block

-Zoya Renew polish rejuvenator

I use each product ALL of the time. I find that they work well with all of my polishes but they work even better with Zoya polishes.

Polish Pretty,

Amor de Lacquer: Strong nails via vitamins

It’s Amor de Lacquer week!!!! All posts will be related to nail polish and nail care!

Welcome to another post of Amor de Lacquer….the series all about nail polish and nail care! Send me your requests, suggestions and ideas to Brittany@ClumpsOfMascara.com.

When it comes to keeping nails strong, sometimes it starts on the inside. Aside from keeping a well balanced diet and working out every day, I also take vitamins religiously. I have been taking multi-vitamins and Vitamin C since I was a little girl. Fish oil pills have been ensuring that I get my omega 3 intake daily amd for the past 4 months or so I have been taking Biotin.

What MotherNature.com says about Biotin,

…..so far, only one nutrient—biotin, part of the B-complex—has been proven helpful for nail health in people who aren’t malnourished.” (source)

I also know that you HAVE to take biotin in conjunction with a multi-vitamin.
Of course you should do some more of your own research and talk with a doctor prior to taking any new vitamins.

Has it been working well for me? I would say so! My nails are finally as healthy as they were pre-acrylic days.

Do you take this vitamin? How do you keep your nails strong?

Amor de Lacquer: First Look at Nfu-Oh Polish

It’s Amor de Lacquer week!!!! All posts will be related to nail polish and nail care!

If there is one brand that nail polish enthusiasts go gaga over, it is the South Korea brand Nfu-Oh. I remember first checking getting a glimpse of these beautiful babies at The Nailphile. I was in total awe. I had to have one. Or two. Or three.

Once upon a time Nfu-Oh polishes used to be extremely difficult to get a hold of. Most were shipped from Hong Kong and you can imagine those shipping fees. Luckily, I have found a little angel who lives in the States that ships Nfu-Oh polishes.

Today I will be introducing you to Nfu-Oh #51. I don’t even know how to describe this color. It has a neon purple/blue base with red/gold/green flecks and red glitter. This is a polish with personality, yall! I mean….just look at it!

But then if you photograph it with light…it looks different.

I will tell you now….it is beyond difficult to catch the essence of Nfu-Oh polishes. They are BIPs to the max. BIP meaning better in person. I’m not kidding. Let’s move on, shall we?

I would be remiss if I didn’t talk about how beautiful the bottle designs are.

The corset style bottles are not only darling but the handle makes for easy application.

Speaking of application, because this particular Nfu-Oh polish is so sheer, I like to layer it on top of a color. The best thing about the flecks floating in this polish is that you can get a dozen different looks depending on what color you use as a base.

For this look I used Zoya’s Colbie-a burgundy polish with beautiful shimmer.

Just watch how the Nfu-Oh transforms Colbie. We will use this finger to watch the transformation.

After 2 coats of Nfu-Oh, look what we have!

You MUST click on the picture above to see all of the 3D-esque dimensions of this polish. More beautiful shots of Nfu-Oh #51 in action.

Are you in love yet? I absolutely love what this polish does and plan on adding more to my stash. You can snag these from Fabuloustreet.com. They are retailed at $12.50 and shipping is free. Click HERE to order #51.

So what do you think? Is this not the most amazing polish you have ever seen?
Not impressed?

Amor de Lacquer: What Scrangie Says….

Scrangie

Aside from being a great nail blogger, Scrangie has the best sense of humor ever. She will not only have you wanting to purchase EVERY polish that she displays, but she will also leave you in stitches with her hilarious commentary. Here is what Scrangie says is one of her most important nail tips,

“Using a glass file is super important. Using lots of cuticle oil for moisture is also just as important. The glass file keeps your nails from splitting and peeling, and the cuticle oil does that as well but adds the benefit of keeping your nails flexible and resilient. “

Of course I had to ask darling Scrange what her favorite glass (crystal is okay too) file is and she says she likes Essie’s Crystal File and OPI’s Glass File.

Polish Pretty,

Amor de Lacquer: China Glaze’s Summer Days

It’s Amor de Lacquer week!!!! All posts will be related to nail polish and nail care!

Welcome to another post of Amor de Lacquer….the series all about nail polish and nail care! Send me your requests, suggestions and ideas at Brittany@ClumpsOfMascara.com.

Okay honestly….I give up with trying to find the BEST Summer 2009 nail polish collection. That’s right, you heard me. No more comparing the collections. They are all simply amazing.

I have been a China Glaze fan before I even got serious about nail polish/care. Their colors always made my eyes boogle and the Summer Days collection is no exception. Even the promo is fierce!!

I was tempted to lick my fingers too when I first tried on my polishes. Out of the six, I purchased three.

Strawberry Fields

I have plenty of pink polishes but this one is probably one of my favorites. The gold glitter has an amazing pop that simply radiates in any light. I wore this color three days straight when I first got it. That says a lot!

Grape Juice

First of all, I absolutely LOVE grape juice, the actual drink. Don’t tell my Mom, fam….but when I was younger I actually looked forward to communion just so I can get a sip of that delicious grape juice. Of course now I know the real meaning but I can’t help but get excited every time I even think of grape juice. I, of course, purchased this polish because it is purple. Instead of having gold glitter, Grape Juice has silver. I don’t like it as much as I thought I would but it is a beautiful little addition to my Family of Purple Polishes.

Orange Marmalade

WOW! If this doesn’t scream, “Paint your toes with me, pleeeease!” I don’t know what polish does. This is a beautiful pedicure color. It screams for attention and looks crazy bling-y when the sun hits it. It has gold glitter and is my favorite out of the bunch.

All polishes applied perfectly and I only used 2 coats for each. I didn’t come across any problems. Grape Juice was a little streaky the first time around but achieved bottle color by the second coat. These polishes have a beautiful jelly-like consistency that don’t even need a top coat.

I got them from Head2ToeBeauty.com for only $2.99. I know for a fact that they are hard to find at Sally’s Beauty Supply’s so just do yourself a favor and get them online. They are cheaper and Head2ToeBeauty ships quickly!

So what do you think? Are these not the best summer colors ever?
