Sista Show Off: Nail Polish Blogs

It’s no surprise that I have a slight obsession with nail polish. I always manage to slide in a NOTD (nail of the day) or drop the skinny on nail polish collections that catch my eye. Perhaps nail polish and designs are more attractive to me because of the boredom I have been feeling with make-up collections lately. My “slight obsession” with polish is virtually a lifestyle for some ladies out in the blogosphere. Just when I thought that beauty bloggin’ was where it’s at I stumbled across some fantabulous nail polish blogs. “Oh! Em! Gee!” Check out my favorites!

Scrangie

I looove Scrangie’s blog. Just the other day I spent about an hour looking at her archived posts and kept “Ohh-ing” and “Ahh-ing” at everything. Scrangie keeps you up to date with all things nail-related. Designs, looks, newly released collections, colors, finishes, requests? The good ole’ Scrange has it all. Warning…spend more than 5 minutes on her site and you will be coveting quite a bit.

The Nailphile

Talk about crazy close-ups and beautiful nail beds. In my dreams, I would be able to sport nails this long. The Nailphile is one of my favorite nail blogs because I just love the intensity of the colors she swatches. Just beautiful!

The Polish Addict

More beautiful swatches and fabulous designs! Can’t get enough of this site. I blame her for cyber-making me order that bulk of Misa polishes. And she endorses Obama? Heyyyy!!!

I have these blogs and more in my Google Reader. I’ve been running into so many great nail blogs that I’ve created a blog roll over there to the left of my page.

Check out the looks I’ve been sporting lately…

NYC’s Moten Metal
DESIGN: O.P.I.’s Take Me to the Taj Mahal
and Sally Hansen’s Alchemy

O.P.I’s That’s Berry Daring some
DESIGN: random black and white polishes

O.P.I’s Take Me To the Taj Mahal

I’m finding myself incorporating some funky design to each look I do. While I am currently rocking the latter I can not WAIT until my order of Zoya polishes from the Flourish Winter 08 collection come in. Formaldehyde and DPB free polishes? Yea mon!

Polish pretty!

….and while I’ve officially endorsed Barack Obama a loooong time ago I can’t express to you, my blog family, how excited/nervous/scared/thrilled/proud I am about today. I doubt I will get a wink of sleep tonight. We are watching history and I’m glad to have been able to experience some of it through Clumps of Mascara. Thank you to my readers, fellow bloggers and all of those beauty companiesgetting folx to vote. This election has been more than politics for me. This is a dream that I hope will become reality tomorrow. Enough of the yadda yah! I’ve Ba’Racked the vote and leavin’ the rest up to God.

Beauty Review: Sinful Colors nail enamel

Welcome to day 2 of Week ‘O Reviews. I have dedicated this week to providing your reviews in all areas of beauty….face, hair, and nails!

My love for nail polish and at home manicures and pedicures continues to grow. I can’t help it! Growing up I always had a nice little caboodle dedicated to nail polishes. 60+ polishes later and I am often found with polishes in my purse, applying top coats in my office and moisturizing my cuticles during traffic. I just love nail care and design. And I love doing it myself!

One of my favorite nail enamel companies is Sinful Colors; a brand found at your local Wal-greens. When I tell you the performance of these polishes is amazing….I mean it! They come in a variety of colors, have seasonal collections and check this….they are only $1.99 a bottle! And sometimes you can catch a BOGO! Can’t be that with a stick, as my Mommy would say!

For these polishes to be so cheap, they certainly have fantastic staying power. I’ve been wearing Purple Diamond for 3 days in this picture.

Wait…pause for the cause—I looooove this color. I’m not a glitter fan but the finish of Purple Diamonds is fantastic!

Of course the number of coats is dependent on the color and finish (cremes, glitters, opalescent, etc) but either way, I am always impressed with the initial application. I can’t say how great they are with touch-ups because I am usually changing my nail color every 3-5 days. Are they comparable to the O.P.I, Essie and China Glaze? Absolutely! Here’s my SC family…

(from left to right)

-Coco Diamond (Lumines Que Collection)
-Burgundy Apple
-Purple Diamond (Lumines Que collection)
-Bahama Sunset
-Black On Black
-San Francisco
-Pink Diamond (Lumines Que collection)

-The Lumines Que collection is currently in Wal-greens’ beauty department. However, you won’t find them by the regular stash of Sinful Colors. Check near the door where the “new collection docks” are. <--former Wal-greens employee here, trust me on this, lol!) Online shopper? They do have a website but the polishes run $2.50 a pop. Oh no, I don’t THANK so. ;)

I give Sinful Colors an A+!! Have any of you purchased some of these polishes? Your favorites? Any recs? Oh–while you’re exploring SC, check out cosmetics from Jordana. They are usually located right by Sinful Colors. Jordana has the cheapest liners/glosses ever and they are amazing!

Brown and Blushin’ Series: Petticoat MSF

Good day, beautiful people! I bring to you a requested post from a reader who was just dyiiiiing to get my opinion on one of MAC’s newest collection. Obviously, I’m being dramatical again. :) MAC Cosmetics just recently released a collection called Sheer Minerals; a collection that I really had no interest in. Until of course I visited my girl Safia (MAC Pro Orlando, holla!). She sneakily slid the Mineralize Skinfinish in Petticoat ($25) in my hand.

“Um, what is this?” I inquired.

“You’ll love it,” she exclaimed.

LOVE is an understatement. As I watched her apply this velvet-soft powder with high-frost metallic finish (source) on the BFF’s cheek bones, I knew I had to have it.

This baby just look amazing and I love it just as much if not more than my Bobbi Brown Shimmerbrick in Brownie.

Petticoat is to the left, Bobbi Brown’s Brownie to the right.

Petticoat, still with its subtlety, manages to bring out a certain “POP” on my cheeks. And not with chunky glitter stuffs either. Here’s where I place it.

Yes, that’s an eyeshadow brush….and what? LOL! Yall know I keep it real.

Petticoat brings out those high cheekbones that I thought I DIDN’T have. It truly is amazing.

And yall just KNOW how I feel about multi-purpose items. I can see myself using this as a highlight and even a lid color. Definitely something worth checking out.

And in other news….look who has been inspired to some nail designs. This one’s for you, Nikki! China Glaze’s Avalanche is a fun gunmetal lavender and the crazy black swiggly lines give the nails some character.

Stay beautiful, fam!!

Election Day Pride on the Nails

The following blogs will be participating in our Beauty Challenge:

Yesss!! I am so excited to see so many fellow beauty bloggers joining in and participating in our 2nd Beauty Challenge. It is not too late to register (lol at register…like it’s a conference or something). Post a link to the post staying that you want to participate and Yummy411 and I will add you to the list!

Once again, the rules are simple:

1. Create a political-esqe FOTD (face of the day) that represents voting rights, a party of your choice, democracy or just the political times…

2. Post this look on your blog on Friday, October 3!!

3. Tell us the inspiration behind your look and the products you used. Don’t forget to display the links of the participating bloggers in your post.

Are you excited yet? I know I aaaam! I still haven’t even thought about what I am going to do. Non-bloggers/blog hoppers, you people are in for quite a treat. And I like assume that most of us are but if you or someone you love isn’t please….

A friend and I were talking about a “patriotic nail look” that she wanted to create to rock to the polls on Election Day. I just love how this election has igniting a spark in the younger generation. While I stay glued to the happenings of BOTH campaigns (*looks around*) I can’t help but merge politics with beauty. Why not? We got to thinking about our favorite reds, white and blues. Check out my favorites that made the cut!

RED: Essie Turning Heads Red
WHITE: OPI Fit For a Queen’s Island
BLUE: Misa A Sin Worth Committing

Essie Turning Heads Red

Aside from Essie being my #1 polish of choice in terms of performance, I just loooove this fire engine red. Can you believe that this was only one coat? I remember not being able to wear red polish as a little girl (okayyy, I know I wasn’t the only one) but this polish just screams “Sexy Lady”!!

OPI Fit For a Queen’s Island

When most of us think of white polishes we usually think of the white tips on French manicures. I’ve actually rocked that kind of white on my nails before and it’s just a tad bit harsh. Fit For a Queen’s Island provides a beautiful opalescent finish with pink undertones. The downside? It is extremely streaking but after 3 coats you are able to achieve a gorgeous and elegant look.

Misa A Sin Worth Committing

I can’t say enough about this beautiful navy blue. With just a tinge of shimmer it provides an intense blue look with just one stroke. The finish is amazing and actually “looks blue”. I get so annoyed when dark polishes in colors other than black still end up looking black. I own at least 7 blues and this is my absolute favorite! In fact, I am really impressed with the brand Misa altogether. I will definitely be order 1 or 2….or 12 more polishes from them. Thanks to my site!

What are your favorite political polishes? Got a favorite red? A craaazy white? Or an out of this world blue? Tell me!! Where are all of my nail polish obsessed people at?

Beauty Review: Broadway Real Life Nails

Happy Tuesday, lovelies! As I mentioned yesterday, this week I am going to be cranking out some beauty reviews. Everybody say “yaaay”!

*crickets*

Mmmkay, let’s move right along. My darling little sister has decided to review Broadway’s Real Life Nails. I really don’t know how the sample made it to my Mom’s house and not mine four hours away, but I’m sure Ms. C didn’t mind.

Courtney, say “hi”!

Wonderful! Now on to the review:

Broadway Real Life Nails

Okay, so my sister is doing her little make-up thingy on her website and it’s doing really well…

***Snaps for her***

Okay, so back to me—because she is doing so well, people send her things for her to review .Well, some stuff got send to my house. **Big Mistake*** I asked her if I could try the Broadways Nails.

When I first got it I was like, “Come on…who is gonna wear the stick on nails when you could go and get yout nails done?” but as a new college student I know that “the cheap way is the best way” LOL! These nails are really cute and easy to put. If you are putting them on correctly then you won’t get the glue all on yourself. Aside from being really cute they last a good little minute I wore them to a party this weekend and got many compliments because they look like an actual full-set.

I love these nails! They are great for a week or two but not something I would wear like a full set. What’s great about them is that do not interfere with everyday activities like driving or washing dishes. I mean, I did poke myself in the eye and it hurt like heck, but I guess that was just me being clumsy.

Only my sister would pose with the butterfly on her hand. LOL! I’m lovin’ it. So what do you folx think? I seriously thought that packaged nails was so “8th dance-ish” but I am shocked at how beautiful they look on Courtney’s nails. Not bad for under $7, uh? As a lady who does her own manicures, this is something I would consider investing in. Although I do love solid colors on my nails moreso than french manicures.

What say you, chicas?

Cult of Cherry: Bing’s a Winner!

Cult of Cherry

So as I mentioned in this post, I had the chance to attend a Cult of Cherry release party at MAC last week. I had a wonderful time! I don’t drink alcohol but the Godiva Lacquer drinks were delicious. I spent 30 minutes actin’ a fool with my favorite make-up artists Sophia and Thai at the Orlando PRO store and gazing at the new products.

I won’t do the list of all of the products as I try not to get too caught up in posting collection product rundowns but I have to say that everything was absolutely beautiful. I have not been impressed with a MAC Collection in quite awhile but I had a great vibe with Cult of Cherry.

Did it make it want to buy the entire collection?
Um…no. But when have I ever purchased an entire collection? LOL! If yall don’t know by now, your Head Newb here is cheap. I can’t spend that much money on make-up despite the obsession.

I found the palettes to be dupe-able. My girl Sophia goes, “Brit, don’t you start….” because she knew I was thinking of similar colors that the palettes’ pans resembled. I can’t help it!

The lipsticks, however were divine. I had similar colors of most and the blushes did not look to be flattering on a dark skinned brown lady. Not to mention I have enough blushes to last me for a lifetime.

So here is what I got:

Mattene Lipstick in Bing

…and Lip Glass in Jampacked

Being that dark lips is IN for the Fall, I had to cop these two lippies. I was ambivalent for a minute though. Burgundy is one of those colors I always thought Black women needed to move away from. Who remembers how prominent burgundy lips was in the 90’s?

Check out this video for a reference:

But I am learning to except dark lips again. And not just for a Halloween/goth look. I’m thinking that we can rock a pretty dark lip anytime! Check out Bing by itself:

Bing goes Goth

Bing goes Glam

Bing goes mean

Bing’s night out!

I love love looove this lipstick. It is the best thing in my life right now. I think every woman needs to have a vampy burgundy lipstick in their collection.

“But Briiiit, OMG, it isn’t me!”

….if you are thinking this, you need to step out of the comfort zone and be a little daring. Life is short, honey bun. Live a little!

I give Cult of Cherry, the collection a thumbs up. I will be rocking Bing all up and down October and November. I even went vampy on the nails.

O.P.I’s Catherine the Grape is lovely!

….are you excited for Cult of Cherry? Likin’ the fall vampy look? Or not so much? Whatchu say?

FOTD Friday: Browns ‘N Pinks

I am really starting to love FOTD Fridays. No, really….I spend most of the week just thinking about what look I’m going to share with you wonderful people.

This week’s inspiration comes from Too Faced. I can not express to yall how much I loooove this company. Check out the Mocha Meteor yummy eyeshadow.

Oh uhhh, don’t mind the Obama button. Don’t know how that got there. *wink* I thought for the longest that it makes sense to have a lighter color on the lid and a darker color in the crease. But I decided to switch some things up. I applied Mocha Meteor on the lid and this….

….on the crease. MAC’s Passionate: a lovely hot pink matte eye shadow. I could not imagine trying to make this color work on the lid but it applies beautifully on the crease.

So here’s what I used:

EYES:

Too Faced Shadow Insurance
Too Faced Mocha Meteor Eyeshadow (lid)
MAC Passionate (crease)
MAC Sketch (outer-V)
Clinique Almost Peach (highlight)
Milani Liquid Eyeliner
Maybelline Unstoppable eyeliner
Neutrogena Healthy Volume mascara

FACE:
Cargo Bronzer
NARS Taj Mahal Blush

LIPS:

MAC Tendertone Hot ‘N Saucy (OMG, I looooove this!)

And I’ve been all over China Glaze’s Second Hand Silk.

Loves it! Have you ever played around with concepts that you thought wouldn’t work but did? Like cream blushes on the lips? Or concealer as a highlight? …tell me some! I’m excited about this weekend. One of my girls from college is coming in town and we are going to hit City Walk and act like tourists. Have a beautiful weekend, lovelies! Shoot me any questions, suggestions or comments at Brittany@ClumpsOfMascara.com. Happy Friiiiday!

Let It Clump: Dr. Miracle’s, Miss. Jessies ‘an Essie

Yaaaay, it’s time for a Let It Clump post. We haven’t had one of these in awhile.
This series is where we stop talking about make-up to explore other areas of beauty and beyond. That’s anything! Nails, hair, fashion, jacked up love lives..anything! Any suggestions? Let me know at Brittany@ClumpsOfMascara.com.

Today we are going to rap on two haircare lines and we’ll have a few nail polish shots and just an overall good time in this edition of Let It Clump.

And yesss, I’ve provided a video for you folx who loooove to hear my annoying voice. I try to front like I hate makin’ videos….but really I love it! Heheheeee…

First up we have Dr. Miracle’s.

First of all, I can’t say that I’m a fan of their commercials. I think they are a tad bit offensive and a little over the top. And then of course it has that implication that a big fro-style hairdo is “toe up” but long curls (ahem, or weave) is acceptable. I beg to differ. I’ll save the ranting for my personal blog but if you can get past the commercials you will find some pretty decent products.

Dr. Miracle’s has everything from no-lye relaxers to dandruff serums and hair sprays. I dabbled around in the over 6 of their products and have good reports on all of them! My 8 minute video will tell you what I think. Click the link below to visit.

Mr. Miracle’s and Miss. Jessie’s video review

Next up is Miss Jessies Curly Pudding and if you haven’t watched about video yet I talk about this product as well.

I seriously think this is one of the most over-rated products I have ever purchased. Not to mention it is too expensive. I purchased the sample size for $7.00 which was enough to play around in but the product itself did absolutely nothing for me. BTW: a 16 oz jar is $38.00. *looks around* I don’t think so.

But it does smell good.

And that’s where the joy ended for me. I think that products like these are really for people with wavier textures. If anyone can find products that actually work for people thick and kinky…please let me know because I’m starting to think they don’t exist.

My friend Nicole asked me about Essie’s fingernail polishes. I’m actually new to this brand but I loooove the formula. It’s better than…..dare I say it….China Glaze. *gasp* Yes, I’m cheating on China Glaze with Essie and I’m lovin’ the affair.

Ohh, look at Alligator Purse.
A beautiful “fall” terracotta-like color

I am obsessed with this Pool Boy. It’s like
a muted magenta. I have it on my toes now.

A color both my Grandmother and I can
agree on. Spritzer is the business!

Bahama Mama in the light

Bahama Mama in the dark

So yesss, I’m all over Essie’s products now. I got these from Ulta for buy 2 get 1 free and even snagged that Spritzer for only $2 in the clearance bin.

So we’ve covered a lot. Tell me your thoughts on Dr. Miracle’s, Miss. Jessies and Essie. Any must haves? Any regretted buys? Let ya girl know!

Peace and prettiness.
