Beauty Review: Carol’s Daughter Hair Milk and Tui Hair Smoothie

I have more Carol’s Daughter products to share with you!

I received an email after the last Carol’s Daughter review that I thought I would answer in this post.

Q: Are Carol’s Daughter’s products just for women with natural hair?

A: Absolutely not! Anyone with any hair type can use these products. My hair is natural AND loc’d. My opinion of these products will probably only benefit other ladies with hair like mine. But I love to review them anyway….just in case something I say peaks your interest enough to make some purchases yourself.

And with that, let’s bring it on!

Hair Milk

Price: 4 out of 5 ($12 from Sephora.com)
Packaging: 5 out of 5
Overall: 3 out of 5

What it claims:
“This lightweight, fast-absorbing lotion for the hair is made with essential oil of lemongrass to stimulate natural oil production and hydrate strands. Infused with a splash of lily of the valley fragrance in a rich base of oils, shea butter, cocoa butter, and vitamins E and C, Hair Milk is ideal for defining natural curls and giving hair loads of shine and bounce.” (source)

The truth:
Hmmm, it isn’t the best on my locs but I could see how it works well for ladies with curly hair.

What I loved about it: The consistency is great. It isn’t at all sticky.

What I didn’t like:
I’m not the biggest fan on the smell. I love lemongrass in my food but not so much when it is the primary ingredient (scent). But it’s a personal thang. I have friends who love the smell!

Overall: I think this product would be divine for ladies with curly hair. My girl Wes over at Honey Brown Sugar comes to mind. It doesn’t work so well with my locs simply because they soak it up so quickly. It is as if I never put anything in my hair. HA! The consistency rocks though.

It isn’t meant to go on the scalp but I used on mine anyway. And it feels good!

Next up….

Tui Hair Smoothie

Price: 3 out of 5 ($19 from Sephora.com)
Packaging: 5 out of 5
Overall: 5 out of 5

What it claims:
“Tui Hair Smoothie is an intense conditioning treatment for normal to dry hair made from a super-rich emulsion of shea butter, cocoa butter, and jojoba oil. Calming chamomile aids in taming of frizzy, unmanageable hair, while the fragrant Tui blend of guava, mango, and passion fruit tantalize the senses.” (source)

The truth:
Wow, this stuff smells delicious….and my hair adores it!

What I loved about it: I love love loooove the smell. Think of a sweet mango mixed with honey and raspberries. Random, I know but this stuff is delicious.

What I didn’t like:
It is a little on the pricey side.

Overall: Wowsers. My hair loves this Intense Conditioning Treatment. Like…..a lot. After shampooing my hair I apply a generous amount of the Tui Hair Smoothie all over and let it sit in a shower cap. Because I have super dry hair, I usually have to apply some olive oil as well. After rinsing out, my hair is soft. And it smells divine!

I wish this you could get this scent in a lotion. Now that would be dope!

Stay tuned for more Carol’s Daughter reviews. This review will also appear on my hair blog: LocRocker.com.

Tried this? Love ‘em? Want ‘em?

L’Oreal HIP Matte and Metallic Shadow Duos

Before MAC Cosmetics came into my world there was L’Oreal HIP. At one point I owned just about all of their eye shadows. You really can’t beat their prices–especially when your local drugstore is running a Buy 1, Get 1 Free sale.

Girl yes….L’Oreal HIP’s eyeshadows are the ish. Especially for my newbies out there.

L’O HIP has recently released two more lines of eye shadows: mattes and metallics. I can dig it! This means more versatility for looks. Because I already have so many bright shadows, I decided to pick up one from each line; both are safe colors but I love them just the same.

Poppy
Matte Shadow Duo

Charged
Metallic Shadow Duo

Both eyes!

….and all L’Oreal HIP shadow duos have the trunk space at the bottom that holds a sponge tip applicator. Back in the day they used to have mirrors. Heyyyy, what happened, mayn?

I primed my eyes with this:

Yes, I LOVE L’Oreal HIP’s Cream Paint in Witty. I actually use this on top of Too Faced’s Shadow Insurance to really make my color POP.

I suggest checking out my video because I feel like the looks look A LOT better in person than they do in these photos.

I am impressed with these duos and plan on purchasing more in the near future—but not until a Buy 1, Get 1 Free sale comes along. I have a long way to go before I master the art of applying matte eye shadows but L’Oreal HIP’s seem to do good job. I didn’t get any fall-out. And the metallic shadows really are bling-tastic.

You can purchase these duos from around $8.99-$9.99 at Ulta and drugstores.

Whatcha think? Would you invest in these babies or not so much?

Beauty Review: Carol’s Daughter Almond Cookie Scrub & Lotion

Hello beautiful people!

If there is one brand of products that I get the most requests for review, it is Carol’s Daughter. Please oh please forgive me for just now getting to that.

But better late than never. In the next few weeks, you will see Carol’s Daughter reviews pop up quite frequently on Clumps of Mascara. I can just feel your enthusiasm. LOL!

Check out the reviews:

Almond Cookie Sea Salt
Body Scrub

Price: 4 out of 5 ($18 from Sephora.com)
Packaging: 5 out of 5
Overall: 5 out of 5

What it claims:
“Smooth your skin with pure sea salt blended with almond, vanilla, and sandalwood for a warm, sweet scent that gets you glowing. This glorious scrub makes layering this delicious scent, pure pleasure.” (source)

The truth:
What a yummy and delicious scrub!

What I loved about it: I love that there isn’t any mineral oil or petroleum in it. I mean…this is great! Mineral oil clogs the pores and petroleum leaves that oily residue that makes for a serious slip and fall in the shower.

What I didn’t like:
I wish the packaging wasn’t so bulky. It doesn’t fit comfortably in the shower and if you don’t latch the top all the way….mess galore!

Overall: At first glance, you may get turned off by the oils sitting on top of the scrub.

But don’t! Sink your hands beyond the essential oils and you will hit the decadent scrub!

I love it. It really really realllly exfoliates well for me. I’m not sure if I would recommend this for sensitive skin gals as it was a bit abrasive but it worked beautifully for me. I love that the smell isn’t too overpowering. It leaves your skin silky smooth with just a faint smell of almond cookies. I have never really been a fan of smelling like food but even I can deal with this! I do think the price is a little hefty but scrubs last for a while so it’s a good investment. And the packaging makes for great storing after the scrub is done!

Next up….

Almond Cookie Body Butter

Price: 3 out of 5 ($28 from Sephora.com-online only!)
Packaging: 5 out of 5
Overall: 3 out of 5

What it claims:
“A rich, luxurious moisturizer for very dry skin, with a delicious scent of sweet almonds, vanilla, and sandalwood. ” (source)

The truth:
Not a bad follow-up to the Almond Cookie scrub! If you can take the super strong smell.

What I loved about it: It isn’t overly greasy! A great deal of body butters are. It’s like, “Yeah….I know I have dry skin but that doesn’t mean I want to be all oil slick-ish.” I love that I don’t get that feeling.

What I didn’t like:
Ohmigoodness….it is strong! I mean, it smells good but the smell is just TOO strong.

Overall: What’s not to love about a beautiful little body butter that has an almond sitting on top of it?

I mean, how cute is that? I almost wanted to eat it. I know, “Eww Brit,” is right. LOL! The body butter feels excellent on the skin. I mean, luscious!

With it being summertime, I probably wouldn’t wear it during the day but it is perfect for pampering at night. And it is exceptional on those dry areas…you know, elbows, knees and feet. It’s great! But as mentioned, the smell is just a little too much for me.

I think both the scrub and body butter are pretty good but if you had to get just one, I would go with the scrub. It is truly an “experience”.

I wish Carol’s Daughter products weren’t so expensive. A great deal of us love the idea of all-natural skincare products but don’t like the pretty penny behind them.

Have you tried any of these products? Snag ‘em now at Sephora!

Oh….I did a quick video 4-minute video review too. Please disregard when I say “Apple”. LOL, so random!

Beauty Review: 100% Organic Shea Butter

Hello Clumpers, it’s Tamar! You are in for a treat today. As I explained in a previous post I have extremely dry skin. I normally just turn to cocoa butter to hydrate my thirsty body but while browsing my favorite beauty supply store I found this…

When I opened it I was kinda grossed out because the color resembles dry mustard

Its very clumpy but glides on really easily

I absolutely LOVE this product! It smells almost like cocoa butter but it almost doesn’t have a smell. I even mix it with my perfume when I’m going out.

Let me run down the uses and description (from the bottle):

Dry skin Moisturizer
Dry scalp
Skin Peeling after Tanning (if you tan)
Blemishes and wrinkles
Itchy skin due to dryness
Shaving Cream
Stretch Mark prevention and treatment
Reducing Acne
Eliminate Scalp Irritation
Restores Luster to hair
Softens Tough skin on feet Especially Heels)

Its really a great thing to have in your beauty closet! For 5.99? You cant beat that if you tried.

If you’re interested in trying it please check out your local beauty supply. I tried finding the company website but I had no luck, I did find a site that sells it here.

Keep it Clumping,

Tamar

Amor de Lacquer: Nubar’s Going Green Collection

Welcome to another post of Amor de Lacquer….the series all about nail polish and nail care! Send me your requests, suggestions and ideas to Brittany@ClumpsOfMascara.com.

Oh. My. Goodness!! That’s it. Nubar has done it. This is probably one of the most creative and beautiful collections I have EVER seen. I’m not kidding. Nubar’s Going Green is so appropriate with the “green” trend we’ve been seeing. And every single one of these greens are highly unique and just gorgeous!! Nubar’s polishes are free of DBP, formaldehyde and toluene.

Reclaim

Nail blogger extraordinaire, Scrangie and I were talking about how fabulous this color is. It’s a holo!! Next to creams, holographic polishes are my favorite kind of polishes. They look like….unreal. Reclaim is absolutely flawless. It’s like a rainbow is trapped in a grass green polish. It has serious bling!

Wildfire

Wow….I have no words for this color. It is incredibly unique. You can’t tell me it isn’t. At a first glance it may look gold. But look closer, darling. It’s green! It looks like golden mustard mixed in with pea green. It is two steps down from a holopgraphic polish and I love it. I have never seen any colors like it.

Forest

I can’t get over how dead on Nubar’s names for these polishes are. Forest really does remind me of….a forest. Aaand, it’s a cream! A beautiful one at that. Look how shiny it is without a top coat. This is a perfect green. It reminds me a lot of BB Couture’s Poison. But they aren’t twins because Poison is a little darker.

Greener

Yes, Greener gets more photos because I think it just looks fan-friggin‘-tastic on my nails. Some colors make your nails look…..amazing. Greener is one of those colors. The only other emerald green that I have that come come close to this one is Sinful Colors’ San Francisco. Emerald green polishes=love.

Earth

“What is Earth you say? It is the place where we rise and fall each day.” –I wrote a poem titled Earth when I was in the 6th grade. That poem was so amazing that I performed it in a contest. Ahem, that I lost. But I digress. Earth is a hunter green with neon blue undertones. That I like. It’s an unexpected kind of green but it definitely holds its place in the collection.

Conserve

Wow! I am just shocked at how different all of these greens are. Conserve almost looks like a lighter version of Earth. Almost. Conserve also has some blue undertones albeit not neon blue like Earth but I love the shimmery effect it gives.

I can NOT believe this collection. It’s just….wonderful. Nubar thought this one out. There is a green for everyone! I would have liked to see a neon green just for fun. Or maybe even a green glitter. I would love to see a “Going Green Again” collection. LOL! Great great job, Nubar! Fantastic! Amazing!

The application for each was good. Forest gave me a few issues with wanting to drag at the cuticles but that is the case with most creams. I forgave him after seeing how beautiful he was. Two coats should do you good although I looooved Wildfire with three coats. I love that this collection has a base and top coat.

I really am a Nubar fan. The polishes don’t smell as bad as most polishes. And they dry hella fast! You can get the entire collection here for $49.95 or purchase single bottles for $7.49. They are highly recommended by me! Expect to see more Nubar in the future. I am soooo eyeing the Pastel Fever collection and the Cleopatra Collection. An entire collection of purple polishes? *faints* Nubar, you have my heart.

Ever try any Nubar polishes? Which green is your favorite?

Your fellow nail polish junkie,

Because the sun doesn’t discriminate…

See this?

This is brown skin. It is melanin-enriched. Many of us brown girls think that just because our skin is darker that it creates some kind of barrier against the sun. And in a sense, it does. So I guess us brown girls don’t even need to wear sunscreen.

“Girl, please.”

The sun does not discriminate. Brown girls have to protect their skin just as much as the lighter girls. And for some reason, most of us did not grow up thinking this. We couldn’t be more wrong. Everyone of ALL shades needs to protect their skin. From the fair ladies to the ebony mamas….protecting the skin is a MUST.

Each summer I experiment with different sunscreens for the face.

Meet the trio!

First up….

Olay Complete All Day moisture lotion SPF 15
($7.29-drugstores nationwide)

Olay Complete is no stranger to Clumps of Mascara. I’ve raved about this moisturizer before. And I won’t stop. My skin absolutely adores Olay Complete. For reasons unknown my skin has been acne-prone beyond belief within the past year or so. This moisturizer does not irritate my skin, clog my pores or leave me with that white film that most lotions with SPF have. Aaaand, it’s okay to wear every single day–which I do! When rubbed in, it looks like this…

Perfecto! This baby will always be a staple in my skin care routine.

Next uuuup

Rx for Brown Skin Protect and Defend
moisturizing sunscreen

($20-click here for more info/purchase)

I am quite the Rx for Brown Skin fan. Products made specifically for skin like mine is right up my alley! When my skin goes through its dry spells, I use this! It is thicker than Olay Complete so I’m not sure how well it would work for oily skin. The good news is, it absorbs well so you aren’t left with a sticky or greasy feeling. I wish it didn’t smell SO sunscreen-y. It is a little overpowering for everyday use but this is something I’m willing to get over to protect my skin. It goes on pretty thick….

But after a good rubbing in session…

…..I am good to go! That white residue from sunscreen drives me up a wall! Don’t have that problem here.

And lastly…

Clinique Sun SPF 50 Face Cream
($17.50-Clinique.com–click here for deets)

Oh yes….when I’m going to be taking in a LOT of sun, I have to bring out the yellow tube with higher SPF. Clinique’s Sun Protection products are a must have if you are a Clinique skincare fan. Which, of course, I am…. This smells extremely sunscreen-y but it’s a smell that doesn’t bother me anymore–simply because I know I HAVE to wear it. Now….this baby is going to take a ton of rubbing in to get rid of the white residue.

And even after it’s gone, it leaves me a little greasy.

But honestly? It doesn’t bother me because it stays put, doesn’t run in my eyes when I swim and my skin doesn’t have any bad reactions to it. So heyyyy!! No complaining from me.

Brown girls….where ya’ll at? Please oh please tell me you are rocking sunscreen EVERYDAY. And if you’re not….do you feel the burn from my cyber side-eye?

I want to hear from everyone rocking sunscreen…what’s your favorite?

Brown Skin Protector,

ETA: ….but is your sunscreen SAFE for you? Thanks to reader Rachel for sharing this link. It investigates sunscreens and tells you what’s safe….and what’s not. I will be making some changes!

Here’s another tip from one of my favorite nail polish bloggers.

Michelle from All Lacquered Up

Healthy cuticles are essential to nail growth & strength. Run, don’t walk, to buy a tube of CND Cuticle Eraser. The AHAs help remove excess skin while apricot oil & aloe moisturize the nail plate and surrounding tissue. it’s a cream so there’s no oily residue. use 2x/day.
