Amor de Lacquer: Tracey Reese for Sally Hansen, Spring ’09

Welcome to another post of Amor de Lacquer….the series all about nail polish and nail care! Send me your requests, suggestions and ideas to Brittany@ClumpsOfMascara.com. I really wanted to save this post for the week of Amor de Lacquer but I just couldn’t help it!

Zoya’s Spring collection, Twist, may need to scoot over and share positions as my favorite Spring ’09 nail polish collection. Tracey Reese for Sally Hansen Spring 2009 is sick! I have no words for the beauty of this collection. There is a little something for everyone. For the conservative nail polish wearer and for the lady who doesn’t mind rockin’ crazy colors.

First up, my favorite in the collection….

Night Hydrangea

Well of course it’s going to be my favorite. It’s purple. As I’ve mentioned before…every nail polish addict has a color preference and mine will always be purple. This may be the BEST purple I have ever seen. Seriously. And look how beautifully it photographs. I don’t have any color even close to this so I just love it!

Honeydrew

Ohh, pretty. I actually wore this color a weekend or so back and didn’t even want to take it off for work. It is such a fun color. I can’t wait to rock it on my toes.

Nasturtium

Try pronouncing the name of that bad boy. I love this color! My swatch is a little unclear. I’m not sure why I had so many issues photographing it but don’t let my picture quality discourage you from snagging this one. If this doesn’t scream “perfect summer pedi color”, I don’t know what does.

Forsythia

What’s with the names of this collection, SH? Maybe there is some hidden meaning that I don’t know about. I LOVE this color. I have a thing for yellow polishes. Maybe it’s because they are unexpected. And since I LOVE being the exception to any rule, I just adore this one. Brown skinned babes, you better not utter, “But I can’t wear…” Yes, you can. Didn’t President Obama teach you anything? Okay, I’m lame. Moving on….

Tassel

I don’t like gold polishes. There, I said it. I don’t like their foil finishes. I don’t like how they look against my brown skin. Zoya’s Richelle is almost okay with me but for the most part I don’t like golds. BUT…..if I did, I would love Tassel.

I used only 2 coats for each color and each one applied beautifully–as all of my Sally Hansen polishes do. These babies don’t come out until later this month and when they are released, you better run like a mad woman or man because it is hard as Hades trying to find Sally Hansen’s newest nail polish releases. Of course they are at drugstores and will run you a good $6-$8.

See any must haves? Tell me!

Your fellow nail polish junkie,

[EDIT: Thanks Ma’at for letting me know that most of these polishes are named after flowering plants!]

Sista Show-Off: Pieces & Blessings

Welcome to another post from the Sista Show Off series! In this series I like to show some love to other companies, blogs, businesses, organizations or just regular ladies like myself who are paving the way for women everywhere! Let me feature you! Shoot me an email at Brittany@ClumpsOfMascara.com.

I have always been an enormous fan of jewelry. See….most women like diamonds and pearls (I’d like them more if I could afford them, ha!) but I don’t mind funky jewelery. You know the kind where people say,

“Ohhhh girl, your ring is so pretty! I’ve never see anything like that.
Where did you get it from?”

Yeah love the uniqueness that a great deal of my jewels have.

Pieces & Blessings has the following….

-Earrings
-Loc jewels
-Rings

Each piece of jewelery is hand made intricately and with love.

And I must say….working with Samantha has been absolutely wonderful. I received my shipping notification the SAME day I ordered and my package was in the mail within 2-3 days. And yall know I’m not a big fan of waiting for packages to arrive.

Samantha’s Story of how Pieces & Blessings came about:

“Well, I started when my lil girl decided that she wanted to get locs! I was so proud of her. I asked her why did she want them and she said that she wanted to be closer to her heritage. Very impressive for a (then)10 year old. Well, when she did begin to loc I wasn’t able to find many cute things to adorn her hair. I didn’t want her to begin to equate natural with not cute or plain. I wanted her to continue to feel like the same lil girl. That’s when I began to make small jewels and then I made her earrings to match. People began to make comments and request pieces … : ). I am self taught through my love for working with my hands, love for my daughter, fashion, and natural hair.”

Check out my purchases!

I LOVE this ring…I get so many compliments on it. It was only $7.

And my baby locs are supporting jewels too. $5

Right now Samantha is offering FREE SHIPPING!!! Stroll on over to her site and see what looks interesting to you. Rock on, Samantha! You womanprenuer, you!

Amor de Lacquer: Sinful Colors Canary Yellow

Welcome to another post of Amor de Lacquer….the series all about nail polish and nail care! Send me your requests, suggestions and ideas to Brittany@ClumpsOfMascara.com.

I have gotten a few emails about yellow nail polishes. I have quite a few but the first one that came to mind was Sinful Colors’ Canary Yellow.

First of all, I LOVE yellow polish on brown skin. And not just on my toes as a beautiful summer color. But on my nails on the weekends when I am feeling funky. A few years ago, I would have never worn yellow polish but I am embracing this color even more now.

Here is Canary Yellow in different lighting (no coats).

I konad-ed my pinkie finger; just playing around. I didn’t finish the rest of the nails because that would have been a little too much…..even for me.

Sinful Colors’ can be found at Wal-greens for only $1.99. They aren’t the BEST polishes as they can be a little streaky but for under $2, you won’t catch me complaining. I am almost positive that they contain nasty toxic stuffs i.e. toluene, DHP and formaldehyde. Most of my polishes are “Big 3 Free” so my nose can detect when yucky chemicals are at bay.

But it is a fabulous yellow nonetheless. And I am happy to have it in the my collection of yellow polishes. And I am loving Sinful Colors’ collections. These things pop up randomly and I always manage to catch them on a quick trip to Wal-greens.

Their collection themes are just darling but I wish they would do a better job at updating their website. Grr!

Would you rock yellow nail polish? Or not so much?

You can check out more of my reviews of Sinful Color polishes HERE.

Have a Happy Hump Day,

Beauty Review: EcoTools brushes

Hi darlings!

I am already getting ready to pack my cosmetic bag for my trip to L.A. next week. Yes, I am excited and glad that I finally have travel size cosmetic brushes. I had the opportunity to test drive EcoTools earth-friendly brushes.

Honestly, I have nothing but good things to say about these brushes. I don’t have ONE bad thing to say about them.

-Affordable
-Earth friendly
-Great quality
-Um, did I mention affordable?!

I mean, check out how many products you can get for a little under $30.

Ching ching! Not bad considering some brushes cost $30 alone.

I have already packed my 5 piece travel brush set. How darling are the bamboo handles?

Okay, I only have four sitting here but when I tell you these brushes are incredibly soft, I’m not lying! I have been using the blending brush religiously. Not bad for only $9…for all 5 brushes, I mean.

And then there’s my favorite product out of the bunch, the darling kabuki brush.

Made with recycled aluminum, this retractable kabuki brush retails at $7.99. Ohmigooodness, the bristles are so soft. Even softer than my MAC 182 brush retailed at $45. No exaggeration here, kids. This brush is PERFECT for powder and blush application. And honestly….on days that I don’t wear anything on my face, sometimes I just run this brush on my face because it just feels so good against my skin.

And then there are the cute bamboo mini brushes, powder puffs and sponges. All ranging between $1.99-$3.99 I have these packed in my cosmetic bag too.

I am so impressed with EcoTools, the company and the products. You can snag these babies at any drugstore. I have already hauled some other goodies from EcoTools. I am truly a fan.

Have you ever tried anything from EcoTools?

Stay beautiful….and green,

Skin Break-out Regimen

It’s that time again…..break-out season!

My skin and I have a love-hate relationship. Meaning I ALWAYS love it but it seems to hate me every now and then. For as long as I can remember I have always had break-outs. They are sporadic and usually….bad. I can go a few months without a breakout but when they come, they are AWFUL.

Lately I have been dealing with one of the worst. I’m talkin‘ oily T-zone and pimples galore on my cheeks and chin. Pimples alone are a hassle to deal with. If I’m not trying to prevent them, I am tackling them. If I’m not tackling them, I am dealing with the after effects…..those ugly dark post-pimple marks.

*sigh*

It’s a chore to say the least but if there is one thing I am dedicated to it is clear and healthy skin.

So what’s my break-out bustin‘ regimen? Glad you asked, kids!

First up is my beloved tea tree oil.

I can’t say enough about this essential oil. It truly is a pimple poppin‘ machine. A dab of this on my pimples at night and they are dried up by morn. No joke. It doesn’t smell pretty but this natural antiseptic will always be in my medicine cabinet. You can find out more about tea tree oil HERE.

[NOTE: Tea tree oil should NOT be used all over the face. A simple dab on a pimple should be enough. This is some powerful stuff, kids so if you do want to use it all over, use it with a carrier oil.]

So I’ve zapped the pimples but to keep my skin under control, I need a cleanser that gives me a squeaky clean. Ta da!

I absolutely ADORE Dr. Bonner’s Magic Soap in the liquid form. This castille soap in peppermint gives me a deep cleanse and the peppermint soothes my skin and gives me an extra tingle that I can feel in my pores. I also love that it is an all natural product that contains nothing but wonderful additivies. See….

Did I mention that I also use this AND tea tree oil for my hair? Multi-purpose all natural products? I love it!

So I’ve popped the pimples and am preventing future ones but how do I get rid of those nasty dark spots?

Clinique’s Even Better Skin Tone corrector ($39.50…read more about it HERE). I actually just started using this product. I am reviewing it for Clinique’s Insider Club and am excited to see the results. Of course I will update the Clumps of Mascara family but I am already impressed at how smooth it leaves my skin. Getting rid of those dark spots during and shortly after a break-out will always be a part of my skin regime.

These products combined will help get my skin back on track and I will be back to sporting concealer and blush in no time.

How do you combat the break-outs?

…and if you say you don’t have any—I don’t like you.

LOL, yall know I’m kidding. But really, is your skin usually on its best behavior or does it stay on the trips like mine?

Tell me!

Clear skin to all and to all a good day,

Come back later today to see the latest contest winner. It could be YOU!

Amor de Lacquer: Dark but not Black purples

Welcome to another post of Amor de Lacquer….the series all about nail polish and nail care! Send me your requests, suggestions and ideas to Brittany@ClumpsOfMascara.com.

I got an email from a reader who was annoyed with finding the same boring purple shades of polish. I don’t know what it is about purple polishes but they are really my polish color of choice. I have more purples in my collection than any other color. And I can’t stop purchasing them. Exactly how many shades of purple polish does anyone need?

I don’t even know, yall. But I feel like I need to have them all. This one is for you, Tiffany. Some of these polishes have already made their appearance here at Clumps of Mascara but they are so lovely that I had to bring them back!

Zoya’s Malia

I love this color. Nothing beats Zoya’s formulas and application. They are turning me into quite the “healthy polish” snob. Zoya’s polishes don’t contain toluene, formaldehyde and DHP. You can snag this at Zoya.com for only $6.

Sally Hansen’s Night Hydrangea

Ohmigoodness! I have no words for the amazement of this purple. It is crazy unique and looks great on the nails and toes. This polish comes from the Tracey Reese for Sally Hansen Spring ’09 collection. This baby won’t hit stores until March but I’m telling you now…you better get ready because it will be hard to find these $8 polishes at your drugstores. They go fast!

OPI Can You Dig It?

Yes, I can. Sheer beauty. And it’s a cream. This is probaly one of my top 10 favorite polishes. If you can’t find this one in stores, you can get it for $4.75 at my one of my favorite e-tailers HERE.

Revlon’s Primal Purple

Ohhh la laaaa, it’s a jewel-toned purple. And it’s dark but not quite black. I love this purple. It had blue undertones and sparkles like an amethyst.

Misa’s Forbidden Lust

This is one polish that I can rock for at least 3 days. It is just a show-stoppin’ kind of color. My friend Ellis almost tried to snag this one from me but as much as I love her, she wasn’t gettin’ this baby! You can also get Misa polishes for only $3 at Head2ToeBeauty.com

I hope this helps, Tiffany! Purple polishes do indeed look beautiful on brown skin. You better rock ‘em, girl! Which shade do you like the best? Got a purple you think I should try?
