Busting Beauty Myths + Giveaway!

Water

So girls (and the handful of guys that read this blog)…let’s talk about beauty myths, shall we? I could probably write a book on ‘em because there are just THAT many. The sad thing is, when it comes to skincare and my obsession with trying to have and KEEP clear skin, I’ll probably try anything. Except dab pee on my pimples.

Naw. I can’t get down with that. I don’t know if it’s a rumor within the family or not but my girl cousins have this running joke that Grandma has always had clear skin and her “liquid output” is the reason why. Everyone is too afraid to ask her. And to try it. I mean come on, dude. I’m comfortable with my body but I’ve gotta draw a line somewhere.

Check out my list of beauty myths…

Black don’t crack.
Yeah no. Everyone gets wrinkles.

Good skin is all genetic.
Not always. Good skin is also determined by lifestyle and diet.

Water is important for hydration but it won’t necessarily lead to healthier skin.
So not true. Our skin contains a good amount of water and hydrated skin is healthier skin.

Black girls don’t need sunscreen.
Yeah no. The sun don’t discriminate, mamacita. EVERYONE needs protection from the sun.

Going a day without washing your face never hurt anyone.
Pfft! Lies! I can’t be the only who has gone to sleep without washing their face only to have pimples greeting me the next morning. It’s good to get in the habit of always washing the face before bed.

Eucerin skincare

My favorite Eucerin skincare products for when my skin needs that extra hydration.

Three Fabulous Eyeliners That Stay Where You Put Them

Eyeliners

When it comes to my beauty arsenal, eyeliner seems to be poorly represented. I have fifteen varieties of blush, over fifty shades of lipstick and so many eye shadow palettes that I have honestly lost count.

However, I only have three types of eyeliner. Why only three? Because I found the only three I’ll ever need. It can be hard to find beauty products that want to stay where we put them. Lipstick smears, foundation rubs off and eyeliner smudges. I dig the retro cat-eye, but I’ve found that it can turn into raccoon eyes without much prompting. After years of fighting with my eyeliner, I decided to try out something meant to wear a bit longer.

And no, I don’t mean permanent makeup. *shudders*

NYX Cosmetics Super Skinny Eye Marker — $9

What can I say; I absolutely love this eye marker. I get a gorgeous line and it just glides on! Give it a few seconds to dry and you’re set for the day, no matter what activities you have planned.

Pros: Easy to use, great control.
Cons: Only one shade available.

Glominerals Precision Eye Pencil — $16

This eyeliner pencil is great for everyday use. I usually get six to eight hours of regular wear out of it, so it’s ideal for the office or a day spent shopping. It’s available in eight gorgeous shades; my personal favorite is Plum.

Pros: Goes on easy, doesn’t tug, great for sensitive skin.
Cons: Doesn’t wear well through strenuous activities, needs to be sharpened.

Chanel Stylo Yeux Waterproof Long-Lasting Eyeliner — $30

If you’re willing to spend a little more on long wearing eyeliner, this is the one to buy. Waterproof and smudge proof, it’s perfect for lounging in the pool or kicking it at the beach. It’s available in seventeen shades with a built in sharpener on the end.

Pros: Waterproof, variety of shades.
Cons: Expensive.

These three great eyeliners give me a variety of looks and the kind of durability I wish I could expect from all of my makeup. Lipstick, I’m looking in your direction.

Indie Nail Polish Love: Literary Lacquers

Yay for indie nail polishes. Indie nail polishes are my favorite because these nail polish lovers turned entreprenuers really take a passion for what they do. They aren’t just selling polishes for fun, they are creators who bring amazing polishes to life. I’ve never come across a brand that can impress me the way indie nail polish brands can. Add Literary Lacquers to that list. The gorgeous Amy of LL so kindly sent me a few of the polishes from her most recent collection The Good Parts.

Brace yourself…

Literary Lacquers More Like Fire Than Light

More Like Fire Than Light nail polish

More Like Fire Than Light is a juicy orange linear holographic polish and ohmnigoodness, I don’t think I’ve ever seen an orange holo that is as magnificent as this one. I applied 2 coats here but I’m thinking a third coat would really make it more opaque. It’s just so divine.

Literary Lacquers Zipless

Zipless nail polish

Zipless is a cherry red jelly with gold circular and hexagon glitter submerged within. If you’re a fan of creating jelly sandwiches with your polishes, you’ll love this one because it’s pre-made. Glorious!

Literary Lacquers Raspberry Cordial

Literary Lacquers Raspberry Cordial nail polish

Raspberry Cordial? is a shimmery raspberry with what I think is a subtle red holographic touch. It’s delightful and unexpected.

Literary Lacquers Woman of Pleasure

Literary Lacquers Woman of Pleasure nail polish

Woman of Pleasure is another jelly sandwich and this baby blue jelly has dark blue and magenta hexagon and round glitter specs. I’m too lazy to be all creative with jelly sandwiches so I love this one too.

Literary Lacquers Green Gables

Literary Lacquers Green Gables nail polish

Green Gables is a green holographic. It’s perfect. The end.

I’m missing a few from the collection but I’ve already got my eyes glaring at some of her other polishes. Like Gift of the Magi? I SO need that. Each nail polish retails for $10 which I will gladly pay to support an indie brand that makes awesome polishes. I also love how Literary Lacquers has polishes based on books. That totally appeals to my inner nerd.

Support Literary Lacquers and purchase a shade or two. Or 10.

Wrapping Up Summer With Eucerin

So we really know there is no “end of summer” when it comes to living in Florida. Like seriously. It’s so hot that even alligators are sneaking in peoples’ houses to stay cool. Ha ha. I’m kidding about that last part. My Eucerin ambassadorship is still truckin’ along and this time the cool kids at Eucerin have asked me to talk a little bit about hydration and how insanely important it is. Especially during these hot months.

CamelBak and Eucerin

In this month’s pack I got an awesome CamelBak bottle.

Purple CamelBak water bottle

Have y’all ever used these? I’m in love with them. I’ve purchased 2 of my own but I love everything about this one because it’s larger than my standard 22 oz bottle. Woot! I carry around a water bottle daily and the CamelBak rocks because it’s virtually indestructible and the straw makes for easy gulping.

CamelBak water bottle

It’s some kind of cool. And as always, I’m slathering my faithful Eucerin Daily Protection Moisturizer all over.

Eucerin Daily Protection SPF 15 Moisturizing Body Lotion

It’s my favorite daily moisturizer because it not only keeps the ash at bay but it also keeps me all protected with the SPF 15 dumped inside. This, y’all, is a necessity for everyone. And of course I especially love it because my eczema doesn’t go all crazy on me. This tend to happens when I’m wearing body moisturizers that have a ton of fragrances in them. Thank you, Eucerin. Thank you so much.

I hope you gals and guys are staying cool. Later this month I am going to be hosting a Eucerin giveaway so stay tuned to those details. In the meantime, stay hydrated and keep that gorgeous bod of yours protected with SPF!

Pretty Polishes from butter LONDON

It’s going to be Nail Polish Week here on Clumps of Mascara because I have a ton of reviews that I need to crank them out before 2014. You don’t mind, do you? I know I’m not the only nail polish fanatic out there so I know a great heap of y’all are going to appreciate these.

And for those that are alike “Who cares about nail polish?” just push through with me, won’t you? Let’s talk about the awesome butter LONDON first. I’ve got a few of their pretties that I just couldn’t wait to show y’all. I received these for review and as I feel about all of my bLs, they are absolute perfection. Just look at Pitter Patter.

Butter London Pitter Patter

Pitter Patter nail polish

Described as a opaque aubergine shimmer Pitter Patter was designed just for the royal baby-to-be! I live under a British rock so I’m not sure what they named him but I think a purple like this is pretty fitting for a boy or a girl. At the time I don’t think they knew the gender of this sweet babelet. It’s a decent looking purple. Nothing super unique from bL but it’s nice enough.

Silly Billy nail polish

Butter London Silly Billy

Silly Billy is my kind of shade. Then again I love me some orange nail polish. Especially an opaque, fire orange crème like this one. It applies beautifully in 2 coats but an extra 3rd coat really makes it come alive.

Lillibet's Jubilee nail polish

Butter London Lillibet's Jubilee

Lillibet’s Jubilee is a pretty lavender metallic foil fit for a queen. No really. This shade was made for the Queen in honor of her holding the throne for 60 years. It’s not terrible but I don’t know, I think I would have picked more of a flashier color for the Queen. After all, she’s pretty colorful and has been seen wearing many different shades. A foil? Well, I don’t know if that does her much justice.

Still, these are butter LONDON polishes which means they are perfect in every way possible. You can grab these from Butter London’s website and they are sold at Ulta and sometimes select department stores. Which one is your fave?

Mascara Monday: Avon Mega Effects mascara

Welp, here we go…finally. My review of the very awesome Avon Mega Effects mascara. I’ve got a lot to say about this kid. But of course I would. I mean, it’s not everyday you see a mascara like this. I soooo didn’t see this coming. No offense Avon, but when it comes to dynamite mascaras, I wouldn’t think to turn to you. That didn’t hurt, did it? My bad. You know what I mean. Yes, of course…Avon is a great beauty brand but I wouldn’t exactly call them innovative. Welllll, honey, this mascara is single-handily changing the game. Yeeeep! I was so exactly that I received a sample of this to review.

Avon Mega Effects Mascara review

Price: $10 from Avon.com.
Packaging (brush wand): 3 out of 5
Overall: 5 out of 5

What It Claims: “This breakthrough mascara provides 24-hour volume, leaving lashes darker, denser and more dramatic. Get ready for a corner to corner lash transformation with our first ever Wonderbrush. “ (source)

The Truth: It’s the most interesting mascara that I have ever used.

What I Loved About It: It is so easy to tote around.

What I Didn’t Like: It takes some time to really get the super lush lashes.

This is going to be a pretty lengthy review so for those of you that just want to get to the point, I’ve broken down the review in Pros and Cons.

Pros:
-It’s affordable. Only $10!
-It makes applying mascara to the bottom lashes super easy.
-It has a fantastic build-able formula.
-Ideal for traveling. It’s so small and compact!
-While not waterproof, I found it to be a pretty sturdy long-lasting mascara.
-It’s perfect for those with super small and wonky lashes.
-It really helps brings those lashes out.

Cons
-It can look rather intimidating.
-The wand may be difficult to hold for some.
-Excess mascara comes off each time you pull the wand out.
-There’s a learning curve that busy mascara lovers may not want to deal with.
-The mascara has more separating power than volumizing power.
-You have to squeeze the tube to get the wand out and that can be a bit tricky.

Avon Mega Effects Mascara packaging

Overall: I first learned of this mascara when my girl Lianne of The Makeup Girl showed it off on Instagram. Her picture had me at hello I just couldn’t wait to get my hands on this baby. And now she’s here. Is it love at first sight? Not exactly. But I gave this mascara a 5 out of 5  for a good reason. It’s just that awesome. Even if it’s not perfect. First let’s talk about the so-called wand.

Avon Mega Effects Mascara wand

Avon calls this their Wonderbrush. What makes it unique is that it is able to adjust in multiple angles. It’s pretty cool because you are really manipulate this wand to get every single lash on both the top and bottom rows of lashes. It also does a great job at getting those inner corners. The plastic bristles are stiff and long enough to sweep through the lashes effectively. However, the handle of the Wonderbrush is short. Very short. I found that it was easiest to use 2 fingers (my pointer and my thumb to apply the mascara. It’s tough for someone like me who has bad nerves. Trial and error will eventually help you find what works best but I struggled with application for quite some time.

Avon Mega Effects Mascara-3

Also, when removing the Wonderbrush from the tube, I ended up with a ton of mascara residue. Getting that brush out is already a bit tricky (you have to squeeze both sides of the tube) and once you do, you’ll see way more mascara than you’ll want to use on the brush. Sweeping it on the side of the tube isn’t BAD but not always ideal.

Now for performance – it rocks! If you’re looking for a mascara that will last all day, this is your girl. She really doesn’t budge but managed to move easily with eye makeup remover. The longevity is my favorite aspect about this mascara. Volume and length were decent. Not impeccable but I did get a nice set of lashes that stood out. The more you apply, the more va-va-voom factor your lashes will get. I got a good 4 coats without having to worry about clumping.

Mega Effects mascara

Do I recommend it?: Absolutely! Especially if you are looking to try something fun and interesting in the mascara world.

So yes. I adore this mascara. Mainly because I think it is crazy innovative but also because it just works really well. I should be available on Avon.com later this month. Think you’ll try it?

Too Faced Summer Sexy Shadow Collection

Soooo apparently Summer 2013 started right before July. Has it always been that way? I don’t know. When you live in a state where there are two seasons (hot and hotter), it seems like summer is alllll the time. I’m a lover of summer collections. They are always so fun and cheerful. I got this Too Faced Summer Sexy Shadow Collection to review and it just screams summmahhhhh!

Too Faced Summer Eye 2013 Summer Sexy Shadow Collection

And what’s inside is kinda awesome too…

Summer Eye 2013 Summer Shadow Collection

This tin case contains 9 exclusive ‘resort-inspired’ eye shadows. Too Faced knows how to do a good eye shadow so I just knew the quality of this was going to be on point. And of course it didn’t disappoint. First, let’s talk about these 3 shadows to the left.

Too Faced Peach Fuzz

They’re gorge! They can probably be used as highlighters and blushes but with a very light hand. I found Peach Fuzz to be super glittery but I think it would work well under the brow bone. Or even for illuminating the skin if you like glittah.

Too Faced Sunbeam

Shadow-wise, I found that they were all pretty flattering.

My descriptions of ‘em:
Plumeria – A frosty cotton candy pink.
Coral Crush – a shimmery rose coral.
Mermaid – a shinning sea blue with shimmer.
Cocoa Beach – a bronzed mauve with gold shimmer.
Chocolate Sun – a milk chocolate with subtle gold shimmer.
Toasted Coconut – a toasted gray.

Each shadow (with the exception) of Tosted Coconut has some bit of shimmer it. I found that they all had nice pigmentation to them but if you’re looking to do some kind of smokey eye, you would probably need to use a shadow that isn’t in this palette.

Not too shabby for $36 and it is definitely a palette that represents summer. Too Faced rocks the house…again!
