Amor de Lacquer: OPI Skyfall collection for Holiday 2012, part I

Soooo, OPI recently launched a James Bond holiday collection. Bond 007 officially turned 50 this year and so what better way to celebrate than with a collection? I’m pretty lame for not knowing much about the flicks but when I told Esposo about this collection, he got all interested. Mind you, my husband has NEVER been interested about any of my beauty stuffs so that says a lot. Anywho, the most recent Bond movie, Skyfall, came out on November 9th and so this collection has come at the perfect time. It’s a huge collection of 12 polishes so I’m breaking ’em up in 2 posts.

OPI
Ready?

OPI1

Skyfall is described as a magnificent maroon and I can dig it. I love dusty burgundy shades like these. It’s not terribly unique but it is ideal for fall and makes a great base for topping off with glitter.

OPI2

Casino Royale is a pretty plum and ZOMG, I am in love with this baby. I’m struggling to think of any dupes for this one so um, yeah…if you don’t get any other shades in this collection, this is definitely one that I’d consider.

OPI3

OPI4

You Only Live Twice is a rich high-shimmer magenta that we’ve seen before. It’s perfect and pretty and has enough shimmer to appeal to the glitter junkies of the world.

OPI5

Die Another Day is a hot and lively red. OPI is good at always including reds in their collection. This one is just okay to me. I do like how there is a bit of orange to it though.

OPI6

Tomorrow Never Dies is an intense purple but really it’s much more than that. And my camera can hardly capture its epic-ness. It shifts from a blueberry blue to a bright purple and back with the blink of an eye. It’s stunning.

OPI7

The Spy Who Loved Me is another red that looks a lot like You Only Live Twice. The main difference between the two? TSWLM has more red in it than orange.

Must Have
Skyfall: Especially if you need a really nice maroon in your stash.
Casino Royale: Because just look at the bottle. ‘Nuff said, right?
Tomorrow Never Dies: If you’re a nail polish lover, it’s unlikely that you have one THIS captivating.

Not bad for the first 6, uh? Stay tuned for the other 6. This collection is currently available at Ulta and JC Penny Salons.

Mascara Monday: Physicians Formula Organic wear 100% Natural Lash Boosting mascara

DSC_1618

It’s been a very long time since I’ve reviewed something from Physicians Formula. I think the last thing I featured was their amaziiiiiing and super cool lipgloss that lights up. And I am still using it. I’m serious. It is currently taking up residency in my makeup bag. I know how to be a faithful makeup user. Hmm mmmm. Anywho, they’ve got a a new mascara on the scene and I’ve had my up’s and down’s with PF’s mascara’s. Let’s see where this one stands…

DSC_1601

Price: $9.95 at drugstores and at PhysiciansFormula.com
Packaging (brush wand): 2 out of 5
Overall: 2 out of 5

What It Claims: Per packaging…

DSC_1603

DSC_1612

The Truth: It kinda sucks. I know, I know. I hate to say it but y’all want me to be honest, don’t you?

What I Loved About It: I also adore PF’s packaging. Especially their mascaras. So cute, right?

What I Didn’t Like: It’s like a lot of PF mascaras in that a few hours after you apply it, it just disappears. Freaky.

Overall: Oh boy. Let’s go ahead and get this over with. Reviewing this mascara will be like quickly ripping a band-aid off. I just want it to be quick. First, let’s talk about about some of the awesome qualities and claims about this mascara. Ready? According to PhysiciansFormula.com, this mascara rocks because of the following reasons:

-Hypoallergenic. Fragrance free. Ophthalmologist approved. Gluten Free.
-100% of the Total Ingredients are from Natural Origin.
-44% of the Total Ingredients are from Organic Farming.
-100% saw enhanced lashes INSTANLY!
-1st Ever 100% Natural Lash Boosting formula enhances the appearance of lash length, thickness and volume for dramatic lashes instantly and long-term.

100% out of how many? These are the questions I have when I see percentages. But anyway…those are some serious claims, uh? I’ve got to give it up to Physicians Formula because when it comes to omitting a ton of yucky stuff from their products, they’re good at that. If, of course, you care about that sort of thing. But when it comes to performance this mascara sucks and that makes me sad. I can blame part of the suck-age on the wand.

DSC_1630

No, it’s not horrible and yes, I’ve seen worse and it’s not its size that bothers me. It’s those super itty bitty teeny tiny bristles. They are SO small. Ridiculously small. Even if you’ve got super long lashes, getting this wand to the base of your lashes will be quite the challenge. And it’s a time-consuming challenge that many of us who like to spend no more than 10 minutes on their makeup have no time for. If you can manage to coat those lashes with mascara, you’re left with a wee of thickness to the lashes. And just a wee bit. Lengthening was meh and I saw a little more volumizing. Enough volumizing to make me nod me head and say, “Hmm. Not bad.”

Hours later, though, I’d glance in the mirror and notice that I didn’t have no any mascara. None. The mascara simply did a disappearing act. This doesn’t surprise me. It has happened before with many natural mascaras. They aren’t always the best with longevity. I’m not sure what ingredient(s) it is that helps mascaras stay around longer but without it, wearing a mascara is almost point-less. I’ve experienced natural mascaras that actually stick around longer than a few hours without flaking or smudging away but I can’t say the same about this baby.

It’s a shame too because gosh…ain’t it cute?

Bare Lashes

Do I recommend it?: Nope. It simply won’t stick around. And I’m pretty sure it would do worse in super hot and sticky environments.

Any natural mascara lovers in the house? Have you ever experienced this before?

More reasons to love the natural brand Dr. Woods…

Remember that time I reviewed an awesome facial cleanser that I impulsively purchased while shopping at a natural food store? Yep. It happens, ya know? You go in a store with a list and end up picking up stuff you didn’t intend to. Freaking Target does it to me every time. The good news is, that Dr. Woods cleanser was spectacular! And since using it, I’ve gotten my hands on some more of their other products. Their availability in stores is tricky but you can find most of ’em online and for A LOT cheaper than what they’d be in stores.

And y’all knowwww how much I love bar soaps.

DSC_1563

My skin is doing all kinds of craziness due to this pregnancy. My normally dry skin has gotten all weird and oily. This Shea Vision Naturals Tea Tree oily/combination skin ain’t too shabby.

DSC_1575

DSC_1574

DSC_1570

DSC_1572

And like all Dr. Woods products, it’s vegan. I’m in love with the fragrance as I was with the cleanser made for normal skin. It’s got a nice woods-y since but nothing over the top. This cleanser also has a clear consistency making it ideal for those with oiler skin. This baby can easily go for over $10 in stores but I found it for less than $6 at LuckyVitamin.com. And as far as those bar soaps…

DSC_1552

I like them a lot. I’ve been using bar soaps more for hand washin’ than body washing simply because my eczema-ridden skin can’t get too much moisture from bar soaps. But that doesn’t mean I can’t enjoy ’em anyway. I love shea butter soaps and considering how moisturizing shea butter is in its natural state, I wish it was AS moisturizing in a bar. But alas, it’s not. These soaps are still pretty fantastic. Mostly because they smell all earthy and woodsy.

DSC_1562

DSC_1568

Ingredients-wise, they follow the same preservative-free philosophy of all Dr. Woods products.

DSC_1561

I’ve got one bar in my guest bathroom and another in my bathroom but I tend to like the raw black shea butter best. The red currant clove has a nice and spicy fragrance but it’s a bit on the strong side. Like most bar soaps, it dissipates after awhile but while lathering up, these are very nice soaps. And they’re decently priced at around $3 online.

Dr. Woods rocks and I really wish I could see more of this brand in stores.

DSC_1546

But I don’t mind stocking up online either. If you’re a lover of natural products and lookin’ to try something new, you’ll like Dr. Woods.

Pretty Polishes: More Essence Colour & Go polishes

I’m back with more Essence polishes to show off. Since their epic packaging revamp, trying to find these polishes in Ulta stores has been virtually impossible. In fact, when I went looking for them, I only saw TWO of them available. Of course you can still purchase them online but *sigh* who prefers online shopping over actually getting a product without having to pay for shipping? Okay, don’t answer that. Ordering online isn’t always that bad. But still. I hope that Ulta stores everywhere stock up and stay stocked up on these polishes. In the meantime, here are 4 that I snagged.

These will keep me quiet for now but I’ve got like 5 more Essence polishes on my WANT list.

Grey-t To Be Here is a pale grey with subtle pink iridescent shimmer. And by subtle, I mean you can barely see it. But when your nails hit the light, POW, there it is. I really really like this polish. I haven’t seen anything like it before.

Off To Miami is a coral with a dose of tangerine. I spent so many years being anti-coral nail polish which is crazy because I find polishes like this so pretty now. And compliments nail polish lovers of all hues.

Break Through is a rich and vibrant violet. When I first saw it in Ulta, I was all like “Meh”. But I picked it up anyway and after polishing my nails, I fell in love with this creme. It is gooooorgeous.

Fame Fatel is just your typical rich blood red polish. Yep, there are trillions of red polishes and this one isn’t all that unique but it’s still pretty.

As much as I love the larger nail polish wand in the new Essence bottles, some of them are a bit on the wonky side. You can trim them using cuticle scissors but it’s still annoying. I also found the formula of some of these to be on the thicker side. Also annoying. But hey, for $1.99, there isn’t much complaining I’m going to do about these polishes.

They are available at Ulta stores at Ulta.com.

Have you managed to grab any of these polishes yet?

Mascara Monday: CoverGirl LashBlast Clump Crusher mascara

DSC_1722

Guess who’s back in the hizooooouse? LashBlast! If I went around polling 10 of my friends, at least half of them are going to say they LOVE this mascara. And of course I agree. I’ve been a Lash Blast lover for quite some time. And I don’t even have to tango with LashBlast Length or Lash Blast 24HR or LashBlast Fusion. I’m okay rollin’ with the original. But in case you needed something new to your beauty boudoir, CoverGirl is gracing us with another Lash Blast, baby. And this one is totally made for me. It’s like THEE Clumps of Mascara anti-clumps mascara. Get it? Get it? I’m so weak from excitement yo.

DSC_1716

Price: $8.99 at drugstores
Packaging (brush wand): 5 out of 5
Overall: 4.5 out of 5

What It Claims: “COVERGIRL Clump Crusher Mascara by LashBlast features an innovative curved brush that builds 200% more volume with zero clumps, even after 30 strokes. The Clump Crusher brush custom fits to the curve of the eye allowing for root to tip volume while tight spacing between the bristles stops clump formation before it can start.” (per press release)

The Truth: It really didn’t give me any clumps. I’m serious. Not even one!

What I Loved About It: This mascara’s formula is incredibly build-able. So much so that if caught me by surprise.

What I Didn’t Like: A super build-able formula means that your lashes may be be a bit heavy and may flake a little too.

Overall: Hey there LashBlast! So nice to see you again. I usually complain when brands come out with multiple versions of the same mascara but I don’t know, there’s something wonderful about LashBlast. It’s kinda like that Aunt who is a bit obnoxious but always comes by bearing gifts. Like…how can you hate her? Auntie LashBlast shocked me with this formula. Simply because I didn’t think there would be any more LashBlast formulas. We’ve seen Volume, 24HR, Length and Fusion. How can you make better better? Wellll, you create an awesome clump-free formula and give it a captivating wand to boot. Duh!!!

DSC_1735

DSC_1738

Okay, so pleaseeeee don’t ask me to compare THIS LashBlast to the other LashBlast kids. I am going to review this one as if the others don’t exist. Each mascara totes its own claim and since this one promises to volumizes without ANY clumping, well then….that’s what I’m going to judge this baby on. First off, formula-wise, the formula has a nice consistency. I didn’t find it to be too thick and getting a nice even coat was easy peasy. One of the aspects about the LashBlast mascaras that people seem to love so much is the wand. Despite its girth, it has always performed really well for me. I never like to recommend this mascara for those with smaller lids and lashes (as they may find application to be a bit tricky and daunting) but the truth is, if you can handle the challenge, this wand does a great job at at grabbing those tiny lashes and coating them evenly with mascara. This wand differs from the other LashBlast wands because it has a bit of a curve to it but I didn’t notice it making or breaking my experience.

Now for the formula and its claim to be clump-free…first of all, how crazy is a claim is that? Pretty ambitious of ya, uh, CoverGirl? But if anyone can do it, it’s them so I was so excited to push this mascara to the limit. For the record, most mascara wearers seem to be okay with 1, 2 and maybe 3 coats. In real life circumstances, you’ll probably never need to apply more than 3 coats. But I’m a crazed mascara lover so my attempting to apply 10 coats of mascara shouldn’t come as a surprise.

Surprisingly, the mascara holds up REALLY well after 3 coats. The trick to get added volume is to make sure that your lashes don’t dry in between coats. That means you apply. Wait a few seconds. Apply again. Wait a few seconds. And repeat. If you try to apply and give breaks in between those coats, you’ll end up with dry lashes, a wet wand and a bit of a disaster when it comes to flakiness. Trust me on this. I applied up to 10 coats of this mascara and around the 10th coat, it STILL didn’t clump. A few of my lashes melded together a bit. And by 10 coats they felt heavier than I would have liked but the point is…no major clumps. AND decent length and awesome volume. I say that’s a win!

Do I recommend it?: Um yesss!! Granted, I’m sure you won’t ever be applying 10 coats of mascara like me but if you like buildable formulas (and you’ve been a fan of previous LashBlast mascaras) you are going to love this one.

What do you think LashBlast lovers? Is this one a hit or do you prefer some of the other versions?

*This is a sponsored post by CoverGirl. As always, all mascara reviews are my own opinion. I keeps it reeeal. 😎

Curling the eyelashes: Yay or Nay?

Okay guys and gals, I got a serious question for you. Do you curl your eyelashes? Okay, not as SERIOUS of a question as you may have been thinking but come on…do you? I don’t do it as often as I want to and it’s a darn shame because you can seriously change the look of your lashes with just a few pumps from an eyelash curler. I’m for realsies.

DSC_1746

Lately I’ve been messin’ around with Tweezerman’s ProCurl Eyelash Curler and um, it’s kinda awesome. It isn’t all that innovative in terms of eyelash curlers go but it’s nifty and gets the job done.

DSC_1742

DSC_1744

Who NEEDS to use eyelash curlers? Well, no one really. It’s a preference thang. I’ve got crazy wonky lashes that go all over the place. My lashes are neither long nor plentiful in volume. They could use every bit of omph as they can get. Using an eyelash curler helps not only curl the lashes (duh) but it also gives them the appearance of being just a wee bit more…out there. And without the use of mascara. That means when I DO wear mascara after using an eyelash curler, my lashes are like, “WHAT UUUUUUUP!” True story.

So the premise behind Tweezerman’s eyelash curler is like any other one you’ve seen before. I do dig this not being silver like most though. In fact this one is a bronze-y copper metallic. Or something like that. According to Tweezerman, this eyelash curler is “designed to exceed the standards and performance of any other curler on the market today. Reworked angles create excellent access to each lash like never before—allowing for effortless use and maximum curl.” (source) Yeah okay. Sounds good and all. And I’m just glad that it works.

DSC_1747

DSC_1749

Oh! And the best thing about these $20 eyelash curlers? They come with extra pads.

DSC_1750

This is awesome because overtime the pads tend to loose their bounce but being able to re-up at least twice makes the curlers worth their price. Oh snap. I rhymed! 😛

I’ve heard several tips and tricks of how to effectively use eyelash curlers from beauty enthusiasts and makeup artists alike. I like the idea of applying one coat of mascara and then using the eyelash curler to help lift the lashes. But most times I’m too lazy to even do that. So I just start pumpin’ the lashes bare ‘n all.

DSC_1754

And after a few presses and being careful to not eat up my  actual eyelid (OMG, because if you do..the pain, sister, the pain!!), I end up with some kind of curl.

DSC_1755

It’s nothing spectacular but I love the way my lashes look after a fresh press. Yes ma’am.

You can get these eyelash curlers from Sephora and Sephora.com for $20. Not a terrible investment if you like to stay up on your eyelash care like I do. Do riddle me this…do you ever curl your lashes?

Cult Nails Cult Fairy Tale collection

Chiiiiile, I can not believe I am just now showcasing this collection. I had to go to the Cult Nails website to see if the polishes were still available. And yep, some of them are. *wipes brow* Nothing sucks more than showcasing beautiful beauty baubles that folx can’t buy. It’s worth crying over. I’m not even kidding. The Cult Fairy Tale collection came out this Summer and it features 4 shades and gorgeous shredded flake-y top coat.

Beauty

Pretty stuffs, uh?

DSC_1171

Evil Queen is candy apple red, baby. It’s a creamy red that’s a shade down from from fire truck red. It’s applies to perfection.

DSC_1135

Feelin’ Froggy makes 1 of 2 Cult Nails greens that I’m in love with. The other is Deal With It from Coco’s Untamed collection. According to Cult Nails Feelin’ Froggy is a muted kelly green crème whose true beauty was revealed by the kiss of a bright green shimmer. Fantastic description, uh? 2-3 coats will give it a nice opaque finish but if you apply 1 coat, you can easily make a jelly sandwich. WIN!

DSC_1121

Princess is no longer available but it’s a pale blue with subtle pink/gold/green shimmer. The shimmer is indeed very subtle but it’s sweet and very dainty.

DSC_1152

Charming is such an interesting shade. It’s a medium violet purple with pink and blue shimmer it’s like a shimmer jelly. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a shade like this before.

And then there’s Happy Ending that I layered over a few of the polishes.

DSC_1174

DSC_1153

DSC_1138

It’s a freaking awesome jagged glitter and I’m shocked that it’s still available. *squeals* I may need to get back ups of this one.

I applied 2 coats of each polish and like all Cult Nails polishes, they applied beautifully. This brand can do no wrong in my eyes. Maria is consistently coming out with products that don’t look like every other shade out on the market. Gotta love that! You can still order a few of these polishes here but hurry as they are all limited edition.

Too Faced La Crème Lipsticks

Come with meeeee and you’ll be…in a world of pure imagination! Guess that song and I’ll love you forever. And if you don’t know that song, click here and I guarantee that you’ll love me forever. Those lyrics slammed into my forehead the minute I saw these beautiful lipsticks.

DSC_1017

And should I really even call them lipsticks? I’m not sure because they are so insanely smooth that they almost feel like a balm. Their drugstore sister could be Revlon’s Lip Butters except these are creamier and are housed in prettier packaging. No shade to those Revvie  Lip Butters though because they are some kind of awesome. But these, m’dear. These decadent wonders called La Crème Lipsticks are just, well…they’re the bomb diggity. No doubt, baby.

DSC_1007

So what does Sephora have to say about these kids?

“Indulge lips with luxurious color and super moisturizers including white lotus flower and power peptides. This rich formula comes in abundant shades in four essential color ranges: nudes, spices, pinks, and reds. Edited to only the most fashionable shades, it’s impossible to pick just one.” (source)

These lippies are vegan-friendly, paraben-free and creamier than my favorite flavor of gelato. Which, by the way, is pistachio. Too Faced totes 16 various shades of these. Most are on the sheer side but still provide some kind of opaque finish. These are really like nice little treats for the lips because they aren’t only super moisturizing but feel amazing. I’ve got 5 of the shades to show off. But first, tell me how much you love the tube!

DSC_1010

Pretty royalty-licious, uh? They are slimmer than the size of a traditional lipstick so they’ll make for perfect makeup bag toting. Now as far the shades that I’ve got…

DSC_1024

Wowers. They are spectacular.

DSC_1043(l-r)
Fuchsia Shock,  Honey Bear, Naughty Nude, Razzle Dazzle, Spice Spice Baby

You know my favorite one, right? Fuchsia Shock, of course. Yes, it’s the brightest of the bunch but I found it to be the most wearable for me.

DSC_1786

And I love how it doesn’t require any lipliner. I can just apply and go. It’s such a beautiful raspberry. I dig the other neutral shades too but I’ve been finding myself gravitating towards Spice Spice Baby.

DSC_1782

It’s the perfect nude for me. And a good dude nude is so hard find. 😎

These retail for $21 a pop so they aren’t your cheapest creamy lipsticks but they are worth every penny. The shade selection is nice, the packaging is impeccable, they are moisturizing and long-lasting AND they’re vegan. I need to go and haul the other 11. Please excuse me, y’all… Oh! You can snag these at Sephora, Sephora.com and TooFaced.com.
