Amor de Lacquer: OPI New York City Ballet SoftShades

Well, well, welllll…isn’t this refreshing? While corals, neons and glitters are dominating the nail scene this spring, OPI is hookin’ us with with softer shades. I’m not hatin’ on this collection, y’all. I love loud colors like most but I also really enjoy wearing soft shades every now and then. Especially when they give me an opaque finish with no more than 3 coats. Such was the case with these. Weeee!!

According to OPI, this collection was ‘inspired by the New York City Ballet (NYCB), one of the world’s premiere dance companies’. Very cute. Oh! And this is also the debut of my newly shaped nails. Some of my older nail polish posts will sport the square look but the newer posts will be showing the oval look. This is such a big deal for me since I haven’t changed my nail shape since uh….ever. 8)

Care To Danse? is a creamy lilac. In fact, it’s so faint that it almost looks pink. It definitely looks more “lilac” in the bottle.

Barre My Soul is a sheer beige and it gives the the perfect “naked” look for nails. This is the kind of nail polish I’d wear on a job interview.

You Callin’ Me A Lyre? is an ascending pink that would be perfect for an American manicure. Not that I’d wear one because American (and French) manicures are like soooooo 1990’s. Agree or disagree?

My Pointe Exactly is a gorgeous sheer gray that looks blue in the bottle and on my nails. It’s a strange shade for a sheer but somehow it works.

Don’t Touch My Tutu! is the one shade that I’d wear the most often. I just love how creamy this white is. It’s stunning and classy and everything I’d want from a sheer white cream.

Pirouette My Whistle is a silver sparkle that looks okay with 3 coats but is probably better layered over a polish. My nails are stained so it doesn’t look the best solo.

Pirouette My Whistle over Care to Danse?

Must Have’s:
-You Callin’ Me A Lyre?: I could wear this one everyday.
-My Pointe Exactly: There is something so pleasantly unusual about this one….
-Don’t Touch My Tutu: Ooooh, how wonderful is this white creme?

I was a little nervous when I saw the promo for this collection. While I like sheer polishes, a lot of ’em are a pain to deal with because it’s hard to get them to apply to an opaque finish. Soooo not the case with these kids. I applied 3 coats for each polish and they were all completely opaque. Fan-freaking-tastic. I love love looooove these.

Are you a fan of sheer polishes or not so much?

Amor de Lacquer: Wet ‘n Wild Spoiled polishes – only $1.99 a pop

Have y’all seen Wet ‘n Wild’s Spoiled collection in your local Walgreens? OMGGG….as if I needed another reason to love Wet ‘n Wild polishes. I am showcasing just 8 here but there are literally like…a hundred of ’em. And they are only $1.99. I knowwwww. Okay, I’ll shut up and get to postin’.

Did I Dye It Too Blonde? is a neon yellow. Well, obviously, right? It’s a looooot brighter than this in real life. I applied 3 coats and had such a hard time with getting an opaque finish. Such is the case with most neon polishes. Still. I really really like this. Your best bet for getting opacity from neon polishes is to use a white polish as a base.

Shrimp On the Barbie is such a Spring-y shade. It isn’t the most unique color in the world, but the gold shimmer in the salmon pink polish makes it funny and girly.

I’m Ba-roque Bahahaaaa! Funniest name ever. Very witty, Wet ‘n Wild. This polish is a brown with a ton of silver shimmer all about. I actually really like this. I’ve seen a lot of brown polishes but never one with this much personality. It’s gorge! Oh, and excuse the remnants of Did I Dye It Too Blonde?. Apparently removing neon polish is trickier than I thought.

Trust Fund Baby is a red blue and gold glitter. Well, not really glitter but more of folded hexagon specs…thingies. Yeah. I never know what to call these. It’s a tricky glitter in that if  have to apply a good 2 coats because the brush won’t pick up enough specs the first go ’round. I layered Trust Fund Baby over Shrimp On the Barbie.

Plenty of Fish In The Sea looks blue but it is more on the green side. Ya’ll already know how loco my camera is when it comes to photographing blue/green shades. It has some shimmer to it but it’s subtle.

Pet My Peacock is a teal, gold and blue chunky glitter.

Tip Your Waitress is a hooooot neon pink. I mean, it’s a “in yo face” kind of pink. This is really the only kind of pinks I like. It dries between a matte and glossy finish. Not quite gel-like though.

Shuffle The Deck is a silver, red and gray chunky glitter.

Since there are a billion of these (haha, I’m kidding – more like a few dozen), you’ve got a nice selection to choose from. This brand reminds me a lot of Sinful Colors. They are priced the same and have great formulas. I used 3 coats for each polish and find them to be really nice to work with. My favorite thing about ’em? The wide brush. Yep. Since I’ve got wide nail beds those bigger brushes are definitely up my alley.

See any your like? Have you spotted these polishes in your neck of the woods?

Amor de Lacquer: Nicole by O.P.I. Kardashian Kolors Spring collection

Ooooh la laaaa, pretty new polishes from the Kardashian Kolors line. There are 7 of these and they look to be perfect for Spring and Summer. I spy a vampy and while vampy shades are typically worn around the Fall and Winter seasons, why says you can’t rock ’em in April? Woot! Oh, and I know nothing about the Kardashian clan, y’all. I’m not a fan of much reality TV. I like before’s and after’s but following peoples’ lives is quite the snooze fest to me. But anywhoovers, let’s get on with the polishes.

Paparazzi Don’t Preach is a pinky peach that has more rose to it than my camera is showing you. I actually really like it. I don’t have anything like this in my collection so this color was quite the treat. It pops nicely against my skin, uh? It took a good 3 coats for this polish to apply with an opaque finish.

Ladies In The Limelight is a yellow-lime that is quite reminiscent of others shades. It’s not as green as OPI’s Who The Shrek Are You and since OPI’s Did It On ‘Em is a dead ringer for Who The Shrek Are You, it isn’t quite a dupe for Ladies In The Limelight either. I like this one better. It’s brighter and better and doesn’t look like barf. Which is always a good thing. Woot!

One Big Happy Fame-ily is a lavender shimmer and it’s all dainty and girly. I wasn’t head over heels in love with this shade but it’s pretty enough.

Back To Reality T.V. is a periwinkle with hot pink shimmer. It is awesooooome. I can’t put my finger on the Zoya polish it reminds me of, but man, this baby is pretty. If I wasn’t obsessed with polishing my nails daily, I could see myself rolling with this one for a while.

Strike A Pose is one bright orange-y coral. It’s gorgeous! It’s soooooo bright. Which is good thing considering I just adore bright colors on my toes. This is definitely my favorite of the bunch.

Our Fuchsia’s Lookin’ Bright has the cutest name ever. It’s a pretty pink. Nothing you probably haven’t seen before but it’s the norm to have a pink in Spring collections. I’m just glad this one is brighter than most.

Smile for the Glam-era is a deep and rich plum with subtle shimmer. I actually wore this one TWICE this week just because I didn’t want to take it off. I love the idea of wearing vampy polishes in “not vampy polish” season. And while I applied 3 coats, this baby was ready for a top coat after the 2nd coat. I love how opaque it is.

Must Have’s:
-Paparazzi Don’t Preach: Don’t knock this shade yo. It is amaziiiiiing. Especially for days when you want a lil’ something without overdoing it.
-Back To Reality T.V. Just because it’s sooooo unique.
-Strike A Pose. This shade is popppppiiiiin’!

I applied 3 coats for each of these polishes and didn’t use a top coat. I’m impressed. While some of the shades are repeats (i.e. Ladies In The Limelight and Our Fuchsia’s Lookin’ Bright), the others are nice and not so predictable for Spring. These go for $7.99 and they are exclusive to CVS locations nationwide.

Amor de Lacquer: Butter London Spring/Summer collection

It’s official. Butter London is my favorite higher-end nail polish brand. Yes, I love Deborah Lippman, Dior, Chanel and the rest of ’em but when it comes to packaging, polish names, formula and overall brand uniqueness…Butter London wins.

I love everything about this collection. And I love how every polish has a story behind it. Check this out…

Bossy Boots is an opaque light pistachio green. The definition for this slang word is a derogatory name for someone who is pushy or bossy, (usually reserved for children). I call it wonderful! This baby gave intense pigment with only 2 coats. It’s not the most unique shade in the collection but it’s still purty.

Disco Biscuit is a tropical hot pink with an undercurrent of tiny iridescent glitter particles. What they forgot to leave out is that is also contains neon blue specs. See!

It’s one of the coolest pink polishes I own. I used 3 coats for it and it dries to a dull finish so you’ll have to wear a top coat over it. It also works beautifully as a top coat over another pink polish. Or check this…a purple polish.

Trout Pout is an opaque shade of cantaloupe, pale and retro. It’s cruel slang for a woman who has “over done” the collagen in her lips, leaving her with a rather fishy face. See why I love Butter London? Every polish has a story. And you know what? I am so over hating coral polishes. I think – I think – I think I’m starting to love them.

Knackered is a sheer, twinkling oyster shade flecked with micro glitter particles. The Brit definition of it? To be tired or exhausted. “Wow, you look knackered. What did you get up to last night?!” This polish is heavenly. Sure, it took me 4 coats to get an opaque finish but it is such an interesting shade. I’ve never seen anything like it.

Knackered blurred out…

And Knackered up close…

Slapper is a truly teal lacquer, bold and very bright. Aaaaaand of course my camera can not capture its awesomeness. It’s Brit-speak for ”slut”. ‘Bout sums that up, uh? Ha! This is a super bright teal. I mean, bright! It’ll stain the nails too. Even with a base coat. But if you like teals, you’ll love this one.

Must Haves:
-Disco Biscuit. Because this pink will be perfect for summer.
-Knackered. Chances are you haven’t seen a shade with cool and unusual.

The formula of these were great. I never have a problem with Butter London’s polishes. I used 2 coats for all except Disco Biscuit and Knackered. I used 4 coats for those babies. You can grab these from Nordstrom, Nordstrom.com (that’s what I did – free shipping!) and ButterLondon.com for $14 a bottle.

How cool is this collection? Which one is your fave?

Amor de Lacquer: China Glaze Capital Colours Hunger Games collection (just a few)

Confession time: I’ve never watched any Harry Potter movies. Or Lord of the Rings. Or Pirates of the Caribbean. But The Hunger Games? Ob-sessed. I’ve read all 3 books (liked the first one the best, though) and can’t WAIT until the movie comes out. China Glaze’s Hunger Game collection features 12 gorgeous shades, all representative of the 12 districts of Panem.

Confused? Um. Read The Hunger Games. Like…now. I’ve only got 5 of the polishes. The HG obsessor that is me wanted to haul ALL 12 shades but only 5 spoke to me. I do want to pick up Agro though. That metallic olive green is gorgeous!

The collection in its entirety….

Fast Track is cool beige with gold micro-flecks that reminds me so much of another China Glaze shade. I just can’t put my finger on it. Anywhoovers, Fast Track is gorg. It’s a work appropriate shade with hella personality.

Mahogany Magic is a rich, yellow-based, brown creme. I used to feel some kind of way about brown polishes with my brown skin but now I am in LOVE with them. This brown reminds me a lot of Nubar’s Milk Chocolate except Mahogany Magic is a wee bit richer. Brown polishes rock so much.

Riveting is a jelly-fied gem and while it looks quite similar to China Glaze’s Orange Marmalade, Riveting is 10x richer and more vibrant. I have already called this polish one of my favorites….ever. Which says a lot. It’s stunning, captivating and just…riveting. Yes, riveting. Katniss would definitely approve.

Smoke & Ashes is a black that has blue micro-flecks. I heard great things about this polish so I just had to snag it. Well…it’s just okay. Outside it looks black. Inside it looks black and only when you look at the nails close-up can you see the blue flecks. I mean, it’s pretty but nothing ah-mazing, ya know?

Luxe & Lush was the polish that I was most looking forward to and it definitely didn’t disappoint. This flakie top coat is perhaps one of the most unique because the flakes are so spread out and in various colors. And unlike other flakies, it actually looks half decent on lighter shades. It looks okay on black too but REALLY pops on lighter shades. I love it over Mahogany Magic. I did one coat on the pointer and middle finger and two coats  on the middle finger and pinky.

I did one coat of Luxe & Lush over Smoke & Ashes and it’s gorg. In. love.

And then over Fast Track…

Must Haves:
-Riveting. You REALLY need this. Not even kidding.
-Luxe & Lush. Because it’s the most epic flakie topcoat I’ve ever seen.

The formula of these were good. I didn’t have crazy issues with any of them. I used 2 coats for each and was surprised at how opaque they were. Especially Riveting. I just KNEW I’d have to go for 3 coats with that baby but nope…it took only 2. I’ll probably snag another polish or two from this collection. Prim would want me to. I know. I’m so involved with The Hunger Games. I grabbed these for $5.99 each at Sally Beauty Supply and of course e-tailers like TransDesign.com will have these for sale in the coming weeks.

See any you like? How awesome is that Riveting?

Amor de Lacquer: SpaRitual Water collection

Say “hi” to SpaRitual, y’all! This is my first time featuring Orly’s big sister and I couldn’t be happier. SpaRitual is one of those brands that isn’t as “well-known” as Orly, China Glaze and OPI. The vegan brand is commonly located in all-natural settings like Whole Foods, natural and holistic spas and natural food stores nationwide. SpaRitual isn’t about staying up on the trends but instead appeals to a demographic of nail polish lovers who enjoy simple shades with earthy undertones.

And I love SpaRitual for that. Their collections are always so refreshing and Water is no exception. According to the press release I received, the Water collection “is inspired by the creative flow of energy that travels through us, much in the same way water travels throughout the earth.” Deep, uh? SpaRitual often supports organizations that have the same passion for our environment, health and wellness. 20% of proceeds of the Water collection will be donated to Surge, an organization whose mission is to deliver clean drinking water to those who are in need. Amazing. Makes the $10 price tag seem a lot more do-able.

Check out these beauties…

Hidden Reef is a shimmery coral that I actually like. That says a lot because I’m not a fan of many corals.

Deep is described as an iridescent reflection of moonlight and man, this baby is beautiful. While it photographs green for some reason, it is actually a dark gray polish with faint magenta shimmer. It’s gorgeous and I just love how it looks.

How Deep REALLY looks…

Ripple Effect is a creamy and dusty mauve that Mama Clumps would so swipe if she were around. There is nothing prettier than a dusty grayple. Grayple equals gray and purple.

Lucid is a lilac blue and while it looks more on the blue side, it really has more purple in it. It’s pretty, dainty and very appropriate for Spring.

Undercurrent is a dark blue that rocks my world. There is nothing better than a dark blue nail polish. Nothing, I say!

Ebb & Flow photographs a little brighter than what it looks like. It real life, this is a light aqua that looks stunning on the toes. I love everything about this polish. Except the severe staining it gave my nails. I had to soak my nails in lemon juice for a good 20 minutes because they were stained so badly. :(

Must Haves:
-Deep. What a stunning gray.
-Ripple Effect. Because you can never have too many purples.
-Undercurrent. A gorgeous blue!

The formula of these was just okay. Most were on the thicker side. And the brushes for these polishes were so skinny. Then again – I do have long and wide nail beds so maybe it’s just me. I expected the formula to be a bit better considering the $10 price tag. Still. I’m all for brands that bring awareness to global issues and for that reason, I will always love and support SpaRitual. You can grab these polishes in spas and salons nationwide, as well as select natural food stores and online at Beauty.com.

Amor de Lacquer: OPI Holland collection (part 2)

I’m back with part II of OPI’s Holland collection. Woo hooo! If you missed part I, check it out here.

I Have A Herring Problem is a shimmery green blue that rocks my world. This may be one of my favorites. It’s such a gorgeous dusty blue.

Did You ‘Ear About Van Gogh is sandy bisque and if you didn’t laugh at that name, dude…check your pulse. While the name is entertaining, the polish is just okay. I don’t really wear shades like this too often. I do love how opaque it is with only 2 coats.

Gouda Gouda Two Shoes is a robust rose that is totally a Grandma nail polish color. And there’s no way to combat that either. Throw some glitter on top and it would still look like a Grandma shade. Which isn’t a bad thing. Grandmas need polish too yo.

Dutch’Ya Just Love OPI  is a plum that was soooo hard to capture. Which is tragic because it is such a beautiful shade of purple. In natural lighting, my camera captured it is a vampy purple with subtle pink shimmer.

…which is pretty but definitely not a accurate shot. Artificial light has it looking more like how it looks in real life.

Yes, that’s better. It’s gorgeous and if you love purple nail polish, you’ll need this one.

I Don’t Give A Rotterdam is a steal blue shimmer that almost looks like I Have A Herring Problem. IDGAR is not nearly as opaque as I Have A Herring Problem but they are certainly too similar in finishes to be in the same collection, ya know? It’s a beaut nonetheless.

A Roll in the Hague  is a bright orange polish and it is my faaaavorite of them all. I was so excited to take a picture of this that I totally didn’t see the smudges on my fingers. Sorry! You need this polish. It is the ultimate summer shade.

Must Haves:
– I Have A Herring Problem
-Dutch’Ya Just Love OPI?
-A Roll in the Hague

Overall, I dug this collection. There weren’t any particularly striking colors but there were definitely some jewels. I used 2 coats for each polish and formula-wise, most were good. Some were a bit on the watery side but nothing that couldn’t be handled with small and liberal strokes.

Whatcha think? Diggin’ the Holland collection? The family altogether…

Amor de Lacquer: OPI Holland collection (part 1)

Oh, darling…Holland. How I would LOVE to visit Holland. My passport is full of trips to the Caribbean and I am anxiously waiting for the day when my wallet can get on board and allow me to get more International stamps. And one of the firsts on this list would be Holland. While some of these colors were pretty average, I still really liked this collection. The names are just so adorable and each polish applied beautifully.

Because this was a big collection, I am breaking it up in two posts. Part II will pop up in just a few days.

Red Lights Ahead…Where? is a coral red and when I posted this on Pinterest, it got a whole lot of fanfare. Rightfully so. I tend to lean towards corals that have a lot of red in them and this one is definitely up my alley. Gorgeous, isn’t she?

Pedal Faster Suzi is a pink lavender shimmer that is just so girly and cute. My anti-pink sentiments go away when glitter and shimmer is involved. I am loving the subtle neon blue shimmer this polish has.

Kiss Me On My Tulips is a hot pink and of course it’s my favorite shade out of the bunch. What’s not to love about a hot pink? This one is a beautiful butter creme that really compliments my complexion. It was a bit on the watery side though. Hence the seeping in the cuticles.

Wooden Shoe Like To Know? wasn’t one of my favorites at a quick glance but once I got it on the nails, I was lovin’ this shimmery chocolate brown. Maybe just maybe chocolate brown polish on chocolate brown skin is growing on me. Maybe.

Thanks a Windmillion is a breezy sea green and the name made me crack up. So cheesy and so cute. This shade is awesome. It looks like it should have belonged in OPI’s On Stranger Tides (Pirates of the Caribbean collection) collection. It’s such a rich and beautiful green that applied beautifully.

Vampsterdam is a deep purple that actually looks purple. It’s hard to find vampy shades that don’t look black 80% of the time.

Must Haves:
-Red Lights Ahead…Where? Especially if you don’t already have a shade like this.
-Wooden Shoe Like To Know if you love brown polishes.
-Thanks A Windmillion. It is THEE perfect hot pink.

See any you like? And how amazing is Wooden Shoe Like To Know? You can grab these babies at Ulta stores and in JC Penny Salons. Stay tuned for part II of this collection!
