Amor de Lacquer: My nail designs…spotted on Twitter!

[NOTE: All photos were taken by the camera on my Blackberry.]

Lately I have been playing around with some nail designs. This happens to me every few months or so. I would love to go all crazy and rock Skittles nails all day everyday but the reality is, my profession (ugh, I hate being an adult….seriously) forces me to be rather conservative in the nail polish/design department. No fair!! But that doesn’t stop me from trying to sneak a little vavoom on my nails. Even if it is only one one nail.

For this look, I am rocking Zoya’s Rea with a quick dash of Zoya’s Jacy. I love love loooove how Zoya’s Rea looks. It is a gorgeous foil-y plum with silver bombs all up and through it. Jacy, a jelly, gives me that extra bit of glam without going overboard. I thought this look was rather work/church safe.

Total weekend look! Dark nails are unexpected in the summer. And that’s just the kind of lady I am…unexpected. Diamond Cosmetics’ Plum Pie in the Sky with a dash of Diamond Cosmetics’ Berry Sweet is a slammin‘ weekend mani.

Ah yesss, this may be one of my favorite random designs ever. Lavender purple nails with a spot of green. Quite spring-y, uh? Orly’s Mint Mojito with a splash of Orly’s Cashmere Cardigan. I decided to go with the french mani on the ring finger because, well… reason, really. I was playing around and that’s where I ended up! Michelle from All Lacquered Up even gave me props on that mani. You know I died, right?

Now this mani is about a month old or so but I am seriously thinking about re-doing it; but adding some nicer touches to it. I struggled with the design on this one. It looks rather amateur but a round 2 should really set it off! China Glaze’s Sky High Top with a splash of China Glaze’s Tree Hugger are probably two of my FAVORITE blues and greens. I mean….ever.

I am STILL doing cartwheels over Nubar’s Going Green collection. I did this mani shortly after reviewing the collection. That delicious Reclaim dominates the scene will Wildfire makes a guest appearance on the ring (haha, that rhymes). I topped it off with a pink flower nail decal from Fing’rs (stay tuned for reviews!). The sticker gives it a nice touch but let’s be honest, Reclaim really steals the show.

If you follow me on Twitter, you never know what I may sister’s darling new Mali-poo puppy, sneak peeks of upcoming mascara reviews, behind the scenes shots at events, my travels, yummy raw/vegan dishes… just never knowwww.

Your fellow nail polish junkie,

Amor de Lacquer: Nubar’s Going Green Collection

Welcome to another post of Amor de Lacquer….the series all about nail polish and nail care! Send me your requests, suggestions and ideas to

Oh. My. Goodness!! That’s it. Nubar has done it. This is probably one of the most creative and beautiful collections I have EVER seen. I’m not kidding. Nubar’s Going Green is so appropriate with the “green” trend we’ve been seeing. And every single one of these greens are highly unique and just gorgeous!! Nubar’s polishes are free of DBP, formaldehyde and toluene.

Nail blogger extraordinaire, Scrangie and I were talking about how fabulous this color is. It’s a holo!! Next to creams, holographic polishes are my favorite kind of polishes. They look like….unreal. Reclaim is absolutely flawless. It’s like a rainbow is trapped in a grass green polish. It has serious bling!

Wow….I have no words for this color. It is incredibly unique. You can’t tell me it isn’t. At a first glance it may look gold. But look closer, darling. It’s green! It looks like golden mustard mixed in with pea green. It is two steps down from a holopgraphic polish and I love it. I have never seen any colors like it.

I can’t get over how dead on Nubar’s names for these polishes are. Forest really does remind me of….a forest. Aaand, it’s a cream! A beautiful one at that. Look how shiny it is without a top coat. This is a perfect green. It reminds me a lot of BB Couture’s Poison. But they aren’t twins because Poison is a little darker.

Yes, Greener gets more photos because I think it just looks fan-friggin‘-tastic on my nails. Some colors make your nails look…..amazing. Greener is one of those colors. The only other emerald green that I have that come come close to this one is Sinful Colors’ San Francisco. Emerald green polishes=love.

“What is Earth you say? It is the place where we rise and fall each day.” –I wrote a poem titled Earth when I was in the 6th grade. That poem was so amazing that I performed it in a contest. Ahem, that I lost. But I digress. Earth is a hunter green with neon blue undertones. That I like. It’s an unexpected kind of green but it definitely holds its place in the collection.

Wow! I am just shocked at how different all of these greens are. Conserve almost looks like a lighter version of Earth. Almost. Conserve also has some blue undertones albeit not neon blue like Earth but I love the shimmery effect it gives.

I can NOT believe this collection. It’s just….wonderful. Nubar thought this one out. There is a green for everyone! I would have liked to see a neon green just for fun. Or maybe even a green glitter. I would love to see a “Going Green Again” collection. LOL! Great great job, Nubar! Fantastic! Amazing!

The application for each was good. Forest gave me a few issues with wanting to drag at the cuticles but that is the case with most creams. I forgave him after seeing how beautiful he was. Two coats should do you good although I looooved Wildfire with three coats. I love that this collection has a base and top coat.

I really am a Nubar fan. The polishes don’t smell as bad as most polishes. And they dry hella fast! You can get the entire collection here for $49.95 or purchase single bottles for $7.49. They are highly recommended by me! Expect to see more Nubar in the future. I am soooo eyeing the Pastel Fever collection and the Cleopatra Collection. An entire collection of purple polishes? *faints* Nubar, you have my heart.

Ever try any Nubar polishes? Which green is your favorite?

Here’s another tip from one of my favorite nail polish bloggers.

Michelle from All Lacquered Up

Healthy cuticles are essential to nail growth & strength. Run, don’t walk, to buy a tube of CND Cuticle Eraser. The AHAs help remove excess skin while apricot oil & aloe moisturize the nail plate and surrounding tissue. it’s a cream so there’s no oily residue. use 2x/day.

Polish Pretty,

Amor de Lacquer: BB Couture for Nails polishes

Welcome to another post of Amor de Lacquer….the series all about nail polish and nail care! Send me your requests, suggestions and ideas to

Time to introduce you to different brand of nail polish! One of the joys of being a blogger is discovering companies that I would have never known about had I not been a blogger. Seriously….the average consumer knows only what is in stores or what is talked about. BB Couture for Nails may not be familiar to all nail polish fans YET….but honey, they should be. This is one brand of polishes that has my heart. And my money!

BB Couture for Nails (like most if not ALL of the nail polishes I wear) do not contain toluene, formaldehyde and DBP free. They are also 4-in-1 polishes.

“Uh? What?..please explain, B”

Okay, lemme break it down. While the average polish would usually need a base and top coat, BB Couture for Nails polishes have the base coat, top coat, nail color AND nail strengthener in one. Ain’t that fly?

I played around with a few of the colors…

Tangerine Scream

I reallllly love orange polishes. But I ohmigoodness wow-oh-wow REALLY love orange cream polishes. How stunning is that? It’s perfect. It’s loud. It’s for summer and it looks like a tangerine and 40 watt bulb had a baby. And named her Tangerine Scream.

You know what I mean….hehehe.

Poison Ivy

This is hands down the BEST green that I own. No, I’m serious….and I own some good greens. See?

Poison Ivy is just…perfection. It is pleasing to the eye and compliments my nails something serious. If the Wicked Witch of the West wore nail polish….she would probably rock this.

Dragon’s Breath

You have to enlarge this picture to see the dimensions of this color. Without the red/purple/blue sparkles it would be a boring berry with no personality. BUT, the sparkles make it pop and gives it a serious attitude. The only thing that I don’t like about this polish is that it is pretty tough to remove. But what do you expect from glitters?

Sea of Cortez

This color is in my Top 5 favorite blues stash. How beautiful is it? It reminds me of the waters of Oahu, Hawaii. The silver flecks are just….I mean, wow. Look at them! I have never seen a bue like this before. It is truly one of a kind!

Application of BB Couture for Nails polishes are good. I find that they are a little on the thick side. I had to add some thinner to most. Each are two coats except Dragon’s Breath which was a little streaky. I can not WAIT to order some more BB Couture polishes. They have so many! And for all polish people. For the conservative work go-er (that’s me) and the rockstar on the weekends (that’s me too!). I do wish that they were a little cheaper. $9.95 a polish is a little rich for me. Also, I wish their website was a little more detailed with HOW the polishes look. Blocks of color? Not so much!

Still a brand worth checking out. Click here to visit the site!

Have you tried any polishes from BB Couture for Nails?

Your fellow nail polish junkie,

Amor de Lacquer: What The Polish Addict Says…

Got another tip from one of my favorite nail polishes bloggers!!

Stephanie from The Polish Addict

“Different base coats work differently for different people but a good base coat makes a world of difference in terms of wear time, prevention of yellowing, and some even help to make difficult to apply polishes easier to apply. My personal favorites right now are Barielle Camouflage and Zoya.”

Polish Pretty,

Amor de Lacquer: Man Glaze polishes

Welcome to another post of Amor de Lacquer….the series all about nail polish and nail care! Send me your requests, suggestions and ideas to

Guess what’s in the hoooouse?

Matte polishes, yo!! They are poppin’ up everywhere. Seriously…..brands like Nubar, Zoya, Essie, and O.P.I. are all launching matte nail polish collections this year. I’m excited!!

And here’s the thing about matte nail polishes: you either like them or you don’t. It’s that simple. That have ZERO shine and are great for a nice edgy look. While they do have their issues, I find that the look is well worth it.

Matte nail polishes aren’t THAT innovative. I remember Maybelline launching them back when I was in middle school circa 1997. It was a super sheer purple that dried to a matte finish. I LOVED it.

Man Glaze polishes are big free polishes that were created for—men. Yep, guys. Fellas. Dudes. But who says us ladies can’t rock them?

The names are so man-ly. LOL!!

Death Tar-(my description)-a matte black with hidden silver shimmer
Fuggen Ugly-(my description)-dark concrete with a silver shimmer

First up is Death Tar with flash…

I kinda dig it! But look how it looks without flash.

I think my tweeted photo shows the matte-ness in all of its matte-y essence!

I REALLY love The Death Tar. I have always been a fan of black polish but I love it even more without the shine. Application was a bit tricky though. If you zoom in on the photos, you’ll see a few specks that popped up under the polish. But it didn’t bother me simply because The Death Tar dries in a minute flat. 2 coats is good!

Now for Fuggen Ugly WITH flash….

….and without:

I love how this color looks on but I HATED the application. And I hated how it chipped within an hour of me wearing it. No bueno. The application was streaky and around the second coat, I found that it would drag….making for unevenness. But I still love the color nonetheless. I’m just too lazy to tweak it and make it work. I want it to already be perfect. LOL!

Sooooo, overall….I like Man Glaze. I am in love with The Death Tar and only “like” Fuggen Ugly. I think both are worth a buy if you are trying ease your way into matte polishes. They are $6.66 each and shipping was fast. You can get them here.

Whatcha think? A fan of matte polishes or not so much?

I will be reviewing a great deal of matte polishes in the coming weeks, so stay tuned!

Your fellow nail polish junkie,

Amor de Lacquer: Diamond Cosmetics’ Summer collection

[scheduled post–I am traveling. Email me
with any questions.]

Welcome to another post of Amor de Lacquer….the series all about nail polish and nail care! Send me your requests, suggestions and ideas to

Today I will be introducing you to a brand that is new to me. Diamond Cosmetics asked me to review their Summer 09 Collection and I couldn’t be more happy that I did.

Here is a little more information about the company:

“Diamond Cosmetics, Inc. is a manufacturer/distributor of quality cosmetics. The bulk of our business includes nail products, such as nail enamel and nail treatments, as well as lip products, such as lipstick and lip gloss.

We first opened our doors in 1982 and began by selling eye and lip pencils to retain chains and independent drug stores. Since then, we have expanded our scope of business to include 3 separate divisions: retail, professional, and private label.” (source)

I could do a whole blog post on how awesome it is that they do private labels but to get more information about that, click here. In the meantime, let’s check out the hot summer collection!

Don’t Teal My Heart Away did not photograph as nicely as I wanted it to. The color is really a lot more vibrant in color and is the PERFECT teal. The color is unique in a sense because $0.25 from each bottle is donated to the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition. Beauty and a cause! You know I love it.

Now what color does this one look like? Oh, Tiff could be China Glaze’s for Audrey’s long lost cousin. I couldn’t do a comparison because in a massive “clean out and give away” moment, I gave away For Audrey. I suppose Oh, Tiff is just as wonderful. The application was to die for!

Fiery Coral may look red but really it is coral with a kick. It is a cream that isn’t terribly unique. I’m not sure how I feel about corals against my skin tone. I don’t hate them but I don’t run to them either. Fiery Coral is still hot, though!

Here comes my favorite color out of the bunch! Hot Summer Pink is officially my “Trip to the Bahamas 2009″ color. I love love love this one. I saved the flash on this photo only because WITH the flash, it is insanely bright. It has tiny blue/silver glitter particles in it that makes it look a little more neon. I can’t say enough of that this color. It is just awesome!

Awww, it’s another creamy baby pink. Pink polishes have never been my favorite but when they are creams, I tend to like them a little more. Cotton Candy looks good enough to eat and is sweet on the nails.

I had trouble photographing Pink Passion too. It isn’t as dark as it looks in the photo. It is really more of a muted magenta. I am sure there are many colors like this one too but colors like this are always welcomed in my collection. When I don’t want crazy colors but don’t want to leave the nails bare, I rock colors like Pink Passion.

I applied 2 coats with each color. All were used over Zoya’s Nail Ridge filler.

Overall I think Diamond Cosmetics’ Summer collection has something for everyone. It will appeal to the safe-color wearin’ ladies and the crazy color wearin’ chica like myself. I am THRILLED that they are Big 3 free meaning they don’t have DHP, toluene and formaldehyde. Yesss! Another brand lacking the yucky chemicals. I love it! Aaaand….they are only $2!!! Not bad at all!

These colors haven’t popped up on their site yet but they have a ton of other colors that I have my eyes on. You can find out more about DiamondCosmetics here.

Whatcha think?

Your fellow nail polish junkie,

Zoya’s Summer 2009 Oh-La-La Collection

Welcome to another post of Amor de Lacquer….the series all about nail polish and nail care! Send me your requests, suggestions and ideas to

I am finally getting around to reviewing the other collection from Zoya’s Summer 2009 collections. Remember Oh La-La? I loved that collection. Hot bright neon’s with personalities. I am still in love with Paz.

Oh-La-La, I think, is for the average nail polish wearer. There are a few colors that are for us crazy nail polish fiends but for the most part, this collection is a little subdued compared to La-Di-Da. There are a very stars, though!

Katy is described as bright fuchsia pink with blue/purple shimmer. I know for a fact that there are many colors like this. But that doesn’t stop me from liking Katy. I consider this to be a pretty “safe” color and I felt like I had to add some glitter to really make this baby pop.

Hey there, Emme! I have never been a fan of pinks like this. Just not my style. But she is pretty nonetheless with a nice shiny finish–even without a top coat!

Goldie. Just how fitting is this name for this polish? Goldie is gold alright! I actually like this gold which is shocking because I have never really been fan of gold polishes. But this one isn’t so bad. I rocked it on my toes for awhile and loved it.

Now we’re gettin‘ somewhere! I love
Ginessa! I have always loved silver polishes and the fact that this one has some micro-glitter in it, well….I love it even more! I mean, check out the bottle! I’ve been using this baby like crazy. While all of the other polishes took 2 coats, Ginessa demanded 3.

I love blue nail polishes! Tallulah is rockin‘. It almost reminds me of Zoya’s Tart but nope, Tart is slightly darker. I think I like Tallulah better. It just looks stunning in person.

[RANDOM] I wish my middle finger would hurry up and grow because it looks crazy funny next to my other nails. I like Midori! I really like greens that have creme finishes but I can deal with this one. I rocked this one on the toes for awhile too. It looks amazing in the sun.

I didn’t endure any problems with these kids. Katy’s brush was little wonky. A few of the hairs were longer than the others. Which made for tough application. I used two coats for each, except for Ginessa which, I think, looks better with three.

Must haves in this collection? Ginessa, Tallulah and Midori.

Buy these and more for $6/bottle at

What do you think? Own any of these? Want ’em or not so much?
