Brown & Blushin': The brown girl’s must have

Please excuse me for just NOW reviewing a product that has been a staple in my stash for like….two years now. I mean, it’s very rare that you catch me NOT wearing it. It is the blush love of my life. It is…

MAC’s Sweet As Cocoa

I don’t know who introduced me this majestic powder but I am eternally grateful to them. Check out how I apply and wear it.

I wear Sweet As Cocoa just about every day. It goes right on top of my concealer and gives me that minimal coverage that I feel like I need. Even though I don’t wear foundation, I still like to even out my skintone just a wee bit. Sweet As Cocoa works beautifully because it a notch or two darker than my skint one but gives the bronzer-effect.

See…

I usually apply it with a kabuki-like brush from the tail of my brow to my cheeks.

Cheek without Sweet As Cocoa

Cheek WITH Sweet As Cocoa

See the difference! If I’m feeling like a little more color, I’ll dab another blush with more color on the apples of the cheeks. I think Sweet As Cocoa is the perfect introductory blush for the woman of color who STILL thinks she can’t wear blush. But it’s quite simple, brown girls…you NEED MAC’s Sweet As Cocoa.

Run run…get it now. Thank me later. :)

Anyone have Sweet As Cocoa? Tell me you love it as much as I do…

Brown & Blushin': Illamasqua blush in Thrust

Well, I couldn’t just stare at Illamasqua without purchasing, could I? Granted I have no problem window shopping (story of my life, HA!) but I owe it to Clumps readers to test drive the car you may be thinking of purchasing, right? That’s what I’m here for!

Sooo, I thought long and hard about the Illa product I first wanted to review.

Blush was one of the winners, baby! Now if this doesn’t convince brown girls that we CAN wear blush, then I’m going to have to go on a traveling tour called “Listen brown girls, we can wear blush”.

Seriously.

Thrust is the business!

Prettyful, uh? Illamasqua describes this as “magenta” and it retails for $23. You can find out more about it here.

So I applied a generous amount on the cheeks….

And wowsers! I like it!

Blush does a body good and I’ll be visiting my Sephora again to check out some more of Illamasqua’s blushes…or powder blushers they call them.

Loves ‘em!

Have you tried any of Illa’s blushes yet?

You don’t wear blush don’t you? Hmmm…..

Brown & Blushin': Blush Application 101

How long as it been since we’ve seen a lovely post from the Brown and Blushin’ series? Giiiirl, it’s been a minute. I know, I know. Like Jamie Foxx says, “Blame it on the alc—I mean, acne.” Seriously. A 2-3 month acne break-out can make a sista not even want to look in the mirror much less apply blush. But I can only go so long without applying one of my favorite beauty products.

For quite some time I have gotten a ton of requests for blush application for newbies. I can’t believe I haven’t done a post on this yet! Especially since it took me forever to figure out how to correctly apply blush.

It really is quite simple and there are several ways to do it.

You can apply blush just on the apples of the cheeks to get a nice flush of color. And all you have to do here is make a big ass (sorry Mom, had to say it..) Kool-Aid smile. Like this…

Dab just a little blush on the cheeks. A little blush goes a long way so it’s best to apply a little at a time. I am using MAC’s Full Fuchsia blush. I like to swirl the blush on the apples of my cheeks to make sure that I have an even distribution.

And viola!

Another one of my favorite ways to apply blush is along my cheekbones. To do this, I make the fishy face. You know, like this…

And I apply a generous amount of blush from my jawline to my hairline.

I usually use this technique with bronzers and lighter blushes such as MAC’s Sweet as Cocoa.

Of course there really aren’t any rules. Do what works for you. As long as you use just a small amount of blush at a time…you really can’t do any wrong.

I have a video to go along with this post. Yes, there are 298 bloopers. Per usual. HA!

Because brown people can blush too,

Brown & Blushin': The best ever!

It’s no surprise that I love blushes. After all…I have a series dedicated to them! My belief is that women of color CAN wear blushes. And beautifully. For a long time I didn’t think that blushes were for ladies with darker hues. What was I thinking? It is! Toya from Life of a Ladybug and I are collaborating to bring you our favorite blushes and bronzers. You ready?

NARS Dolce Vita

I’ve already done an extensive review of this blush here. I can’t put it down! Because it is a matte the color is richly intense and a little goes a long way. It is perfect for all occassions! I don’t have to worry about reapplying any on my foundation-less skin because it’s NARS…which means it is long-lasting. This is definitely my favorite blush of ALL time and is totally worth the $25 price tag. More about NARS’ blushes here.

Stila Convertible Color

I absolutely love Stila’s convertible colors! I mean with a passion. I actually have one in my purse right now. And there it stays. I find that it feels great on my cheeks–especially in these colder months. Not only that, but it doubles as a gloss, which I use quite often! Another steep price tag of $25 but you know I’m all about items with multi-uses so this is a splurge I can justify indulging in. More about Stila’s Convertible colors here.

MAC Petticoat

I also did a post on this baby here. Okay, words can not express how much I LOVE Petticoat Mineralize Skinfinish. I don’t even understand WHY it is so beautiful. Just a sweep of a fluffly eyeshadow brush and I have achieved perfectly subtle cheekbones. It is the PERFECT highlight-enhancing my facial features. I’ve also been known to dust it only the lids too. Gosh B….$25 for this too? Yeeeep! More about Petticoat MSF here.

N.Y.C. Chroma Face Glow in Sunset

I did a review on this here. N.Y.C. ain’t lyin’ about this “glow”, ladies. It’s there and it is gorgeous! I also use this as a highlighter-especially on days when I don’t have too much time to do a ton of work on my cheeks. Like most blushes, a little goes a long way and gives my face instant illumination. Use too much, however, and you may get the “disco ball” effect. A fantatstic dupe for MAC’s MSF coming in at only $4.99.

CoverGirl’s Tanfastic Bronzer

“B….brown girls can’t wear bronzers!” To quote my cousins from the South, “You’se a lie!” Yes we can wear bronzers! I dedicated an entire post to them. I love them! Especially in the summer time. Golden bronzers look beautiful on brown skin. I have a friend that uses it all over and you know what? It works for her. I don’t think I would go that route as I am more brown than she is but the point is….bronzers work for us. For a nice subtle glow…scoop you up CoverGirl’s. It’s only $5.99.

Before I go….check out what I’ve been lusting after for a uh….hours.

From Givenchy’s Spring ’09 collection.

Sari Glow Iridescent Blush

How beautiful is that? This baby is $42 and is only at Sephora.

“$42 for a blush, B?!!!”

Insanity, I know…but isn’t it beautiful?

Don’t forget to check out Toya’s top blushes/bronzers.

Brown & Blushin': Smashbox’s O-Glow Cheek color

It’s the series all about brown ladies and blushes! Here’s a product that I have had for almost 6 months and I am just now sharing it with the family. Please excuse the delay. Pero better late than never. I remember when I first heard about Smashbox’s O-Glow Intuitive Cheek color. I HAD to have.

This silicone-based clear gel is infused with vitamins for the skin.

Now the question that I’m sure most of my brown girls are asking is, “Does it really work for us?”

Yes!

It goes on like a gel….

And after a few seconds, you get a nice “flush” of raspberry pink.

Can you see it? While it works, I have a problem with putting it on. How do you do it? With fingers? A brush? I find that neither is effective–hence why I have never really used the product. So while Smashbox gets an A+ from me in the innovative department, I will have to give them a D- on usability.

Have you ever tried this product? Or would you be interested in trying it? Any tricks of how I can get it to work? Tell me!!

Cuz I’m brown and can still blush,

Brown and Blushin’ Series: N.Y.C. Chroma Face Glow

Lately I’ve been all over highlighters. For the longest I didn’t even know what a “highlighter” was. I would constantly annoy fellow beauty blogger/buddy Kia with the “What’s a highlighter again?” question.

I get it! Highlighters add a little “pop” to the cheeks. More specifically, N.Y.C. New York Color says that their Chroma Face glow is a “luxurious velvet-soft powder with a metallic finish that smoothes on to highlight cheeks, brows, chin and forehead”. This product comes from the Metro Metals collection. Ohhh, loves the name!

I have been finding myself rocking N.Y.C.’s Chroma Face glow in Sunset just about every day. I love how it gives me a touch of definition without adding a bunch of heavy make-up on my face. I can wear this over concealer for a flawless look! I don’t even feel like I have to wear blush! Which is shocking since I have this crazy love affair with blush. Look at the marbleized goodness…

Here I am wearing it as a highlighter…

And the best part?

It’s only $4.99. *does the bankhead bounce* Aww yeah….that’s ridiculously affordable! And I give the staying power a thumbs up too. N.Y.C. has been impressing me a lot lately. Have you tried this product? Interested in trying? I think you should….run to your local Rite-Aid, Walgreens, Target, Wal-Mart, CVS or Longs, like….now. I would say that this product is a fantastic dupe to MAC’s MSFs…..which will run you $25.

Stay beautiful, fam!
