FOTD Friday: The Tatyana Ali look tutorial

Happy Friday!

Sooo, guess what? I recently saw Tatyana Ali on the red carpet and her simple yet stunning look took my breath away.

How beautiful does she look? The WOW-factor comes from her jewelry. A look like this has 3 focuses.

1) Defined brows
3)  Minimal liner with a shot of gold eye shadow right on the lid
3) Luminous skin with a rosy matte blush

Here’s my little tutorial on how to achieve a look like this..

First up…brows!

My untouched brows require a ton of maintenance.

After a spoolie and a little liner, I’ve got the definition I’m looking for.

Tatyana has gold eyeshadow on her lid. And just on the lid. I whipped out my Barbie for Stila gold shadow…

…and applied it right to the lid. She doesn’t look as if she used any liner on the lower lashline but to make this look a little more “me”, I winged out my liner.

And lastly… the skin! I hid my dark marks with concealer…

Applied MAC’s Sweet As Cocoa..

I usually apply it just on the cheeks but to get that all over glow, I buffed it all over. And then I pulled out CARGO’s Lyon.

I absolutely adore this blush. Just a dab to a the apples..

And boom la wow! Final look…

The lipstick is NYC Cosmetics’ Garnet and Stila’s Brown Sugar Lipglaze. Fabulous combo.  I can dig it. I’m loving this natural look.

What do you think?
Do you not love matte blushes? I mean, wow!

Have a fabulous weekend,

FOTD Friday: Matte pink on the lids and eggs!

Happy Friday!

I really wanted to do a  light pink eye look but uh…that so didn’t happen. Sketch eyeshadow apparently becomes purple when blended with pink. No me gusta. I need some make-up inspiration because lately I’ve been cranking out the same boring looks. And I’m making silly mistakes with simple techniques. Like…how BAD is that liner application.

Wowzers. I think I need to work on my skiils.

What I used…

MAC Studio Finish concealer in NW45

Random: Every day I make the same critical decision. One that will determine how the entire day will go. Will I wear the purple frames?

Or the aqua frames?

Breakfast is my favorite meal of the day. But I always have to eat it on the go.

Two over easy eggs on whole wheat bread. Who likes eggs? If they didn’t have that cholesterol issue I would eat them every day!

Me and my Inspector Gadget trench coat.

Ah well, darlings. Off I go to find some inspiration. Maybe I need to spend more time playing in make-up. Most days I either don’t wear it or rush to do a look for a FOTD. HA!

Have a fabulous weekend,

FOTD Friday: Coppering eyes and red like fiyah lips

Happy Friday, darlings! Gosh, I still can’t believe that it’s February already. I love the month of February. You’ve got Black History Month, Valentine’s Day and for us Floridians the weather starts hitting around the 80’s and 90’s and it’s practically summer time. Someone out there just shoveled snow this morning and is giving me “the look” but don’t hate me. Visit Florida! LOL!
Anywhoovers…so despite the fact that I’m Valentine-less this year (*pops collar* So far..lol), I still really like Valentine-y stuffs. I love the pink and red and it’s just so cheesy and over the top and right up my alley. My original FOTD was going to be something on the lines of…

Click the jump to see what the final look looked like!

But I’ve done that before. Remember when I used that NARS Caravaggio duo? Loved it! But for some reason I was feeling like sportin’ a red lip. But when doing so I wanted to do a pretty soft eye.

So I pulled out MAC’s Coppering eyeshadow. Man, I forgot how much I loved that color. It’s just so warm yet un-boring. See!
Go ‘head, Coppering! You rock and you know it. And then I had fun with a bright red lip.

What I used…

…and this one is for my girl Afrobella who LOVES bananas!

Actually, I’m kidding. She hates everything banana-related except banana bread and I love everything banana-related except banana bread. HA!

So what do you think? About bananas, I mean? Love ‘em? Hate ‘em?

I am going to have a pretty busy weekend. I am headed to Miami to crash a Superbowl celebrity styling lounge (no…seriously. I’ll tweet pics!) and then I am throwing my friend a baby shower in Tampa on Saturday. And let’s hope that I manage to finish up my 5K training for the week.

Okay, my loves….see y’all next week!

Have a fabulous weekend,

FOTD Friday: Stila’s Jewel Eye palette

Happy Friday, sugar plums! Can y’all believe that January is almost over? I’m kinda sad about it. After December, January is my favorite month. It’s a new year, I turn a year older and there is a certain refreshing awakening that comes with January. *sigh* But who knows? February, I’m sure, will be full of possibilities. :)
Okay, sooo….I had the opportunity to play with Stila’s jewel eye shadow palette and hot dog! Talk about glittery wonderland!

Click the jump to read more…

Here’s an up close look at this palette.

Stila says that, “the Jewel Eye Shadow formula creates a glistening wave of color that glimmers and sparkles across your lids like no other to give your eyes a brilliant, sequin-like reflection.” (source)

Can’t say they are lying there! I was a bit hesitant to use this palette because glitter always manages to seep into my eyes and make me want to scratch my eyeballs out. It never fails. But I didn’t have that problem with these shadows. They don’t produce as much fall-out as other shadows. The trick is to pack it on.

I also wetted my brush a bit which gave me a bit more color. And viola!

Last weekend I rocked the pink all over the lid…

Loved it! The pink popped better on brown skin than I thought it would. I wanted to see if it would do well for a ‘safe for work look’ too. So here’s what I did…
FACE:
MAC Studio Finish concealer in NW45
MAC Sweet As Cocoa blush
Stila’s Yumberry Crush lip and cheek stain <—still so in love with this!EYES:
L’Oreal HIP cream paint in Witty
Too Faced Shadow Insurance
Stila Jewel eye palette

NARS Edie eyeshadow
Urban Decay 24/7 liner in Zero
Stila’s waterproof liquid eye liner
Black Shimmer mascara

LIPS:
Stila Amethyst Lip glaze

See….the fall-out isn’t that bad, is it? I do wish it was a little more pigmented though. And at the end of the day I noticed glitter ALL over my face. This look may be a little TOO much for work though, uh? I’m going to try to do a super intense look with this palette. I am going to use a serious base. Like NYX’s Milk jumbo eye pencil. 10 points to Stila for coming out with a mega cute palette! You can snag it here for $32.00. It’s limited edition so hurry hurry!

Of course I had to do some semi-glittery nails too…

And I dyed one of my locs purple.

Yeah…blame it on the glitter. I’ve been feeling rather funky and colorful lately. Am I the only one? I just LOVE color and can never have a favorite one. Although I’ve really been in love with greens and purples these days.
Love that Stila palette? Want it? Not a fan of glitter on the lids?

See you next week!

Have a fabulous weekend,

FOTD Friday: Cat eyes and stained cheeks

Happy Friday, my darlings! Clumps 2010 is slowly showing its face so if you are liking the new changes (or not), let me know.

I’ve also been playing around with products that I’ve never used before. Watch this….

I did a simple neutral eye. I really really love L’OReal HIP’s paints, y’all. Perfect as bases and perfect as eye shadows too. I applied a bit on the lid, added a dark matte on the crease and swept some of the lovely NARS Albatross under the brow.

And then I pulled out a gadget that I’ve never used before. Stila’s waterproof liquid eye liner. It looks like a felt tip pen, uh?

I didn’t know whether to draw on my mirror or on my my lids. Five minutes later….

Yes, it took me five minutes. HA! Have any of y’all used these? It was surprisingly precise. I love! Next up was Stila’s Yumberry Crush lip and cheek stain. This stuff seriously smells like red (not cherry, lol) Kool-Aid. I couldn’t figure out how to get it on the cheeks so I made up my own little method.

And I grabbed my favorite skunk brush from EcoTools and…

Final look….

….and why is my Christmas tree still up?

I know, right? HA!! Stay tuned for my reviews on all of those awesome Stila goodies.

FOTD Friday: Tarte’s Treasure box

My totally awesome and amazing friend got me this highly coveted Tarte treasure box for my birthday. I mean…WOW! I saw fellow beauty bloggers rave up and down about this box during the holidays but I could never even saw it in stores. And it sold out hella fast online. Crystal from Lip Gloss Gossip snagged one too and has great swatches.

So imagine my surprise when I tore open Hello Kitty wrapping paper to find this!

The treasure chest retailed for $52 and has…

16 shimmer eye shadows…

16 matte eye shadows…

16 lipglosses

…and a bronzer, highlighter and 4 blushes.

Wow is right. And of course the shadows have the intense pigment that you would expect from Tarte. While I’ve always struggled with matte eye shadows, I wanted to push my luck with Tarte’s. While some were a little chalky….

Others suited me just fine.

….and the look as I walk down the steps.

Am I the only one that puts my cell phone in my bra? HA!

Look! I made a bump-it out of my locs.

Hahaha! Yes, it’s funny. :)

Anywhoovers, I really like this treasure box by Tarte. If it pops up for sale again in the near future I’ll be sure to let y’all know. I still need to practice with my matte application though. *sigh*

Have a fabulous weekend,

FOTD Friday: Travel Edition, NYE in NYC

Happy Friday!

Ah yes…it’s another Travel Edition of FOTD Friday. 2009 was a good year for me when it came to traveling. I went to back to Atlanta for my birthday, the Presidential Inauguration in DC, back to Los Angeles, back to the Bahamas and I went to NYC a good 4 times. To find me at home on a weekend was a rarity.

I brought in 2010 the same way….NOT at home. I went to NYC with some girlfriends and wowsers! Enjoy the photo journey.

So despite Jet Blue delaying my flight (they get 2 fails from me…I’m sticking with Delta Airlines), I wanted to hit the city the minute I got in. But cold weather will make you lazy. Liner, mascara, lips and DONE!

And can someone tell me the “cute at night” protocol in NYC? I can stand being cold. But being cute and having to jump on trains and buses in the blistering cold? No ma’am! That weather was killing me softly though. Single digit temps? That’s just unreal where I’m from. But even the bitter cold couldn’t stop me from exploring the city from sun up to sundown for a good 4 days. I’m not the biggest fan of the Time Square area anymore. It was cool when I was okay when I was a super tourist but now it’s just too much, too much and TOO much. I ventured down there anyway.

But only to check out this spot…

I took a TON of pictures and several videos so stay tuned for those.

Has anyone seen Wicked?

O.M.G! It is one of the BEST Broadway plays I have ever seen. Look, I’m green too!

Don’t know how that worked out. HA!

Saturday, January 2nd was my birthday. I turned 25. They say it goes downhill from there but whatev. I’m still a big kid and don’t see that changing any time soon. I had lunch with the BFF and the ever so wonderful Eileen from Miss. Whoever You Are.

Gosh, I love her. Capricorns (including the famous Luvvie) rock! Later that night I was supposed to go to Lips NYC but dammit….a psycho cab driver who tried to run us down and kill us (wish I was kidding) got us all delayed. We ended up going to Moomia Lounge and…I LOVED that spot.

Can you tell? My birthday fried ice cream was yum yum!

I also had brunch with Charu from the Butterfly Diary at Rachel’s. Delish! Of course Sea Thai Restaurant in the East Village was good. I had some great BBQ at Dallas BBQ and looooved Grey Dog in Chelsea. That spot was SO me.

Oh, New York….how I miss thee. But I was also excited to get back to being in control of my transportation again too. Living is SO different in Florida. Not good or bad, just different. I’ve learned to appreciate the luxuries of Florida even though I yearn to be else where.

‘Tis it for now! Hope you enjoyed this Travel Edition of FOTD Friday.

Have an awesome weekend!

FOTD Friday: NARS Albatross is the bee’s knees

I can’t believe I am just now sharing this y’all and I’ve been using it for ages! When I first saw NARS Albatross highlighter ($25) in person, I wasn’t impressed. It looked to be a little too shimmery for me and a tad bit too frosty for my brown skin. But then it came in my NARS Bridal palette. And oh.mi.goodness. What was I thinking? Albatross is a MUST have.

Reader Petrina wanted me to do a formal review on it so I decided to do that AND incorporate it in a FOTD. Sound good?

Sephora describes Albatross has a “sheer light golden sheen” which I think is pretty accurate. It is packaged in the same packaging as the blushes but is most known as a highlighter.

Promise me that y’all won’t laugh at the condition of my Albatross. It’s been through rough times but it is still beautiful and that’s all that matters.

Talk about a depotting job gone wrong. HA! So with a quick swipe and no blending, Albatross looks like this:

A bit frosty , right? But with a quick swish swish….

That’s better, right?

So what do you DO with Albatross? I looooove it as a highlight under my brows. I also use it on my cheeks. I’ll show you how later. For this FOTD, I wanted Albatross to pop–which is does so easily on my ‘seems like’ 3-mile long lids. See….

It’s a little more subdued in natural light, I promise.

Albatross’ placement on the cheeks…

There you have it…some examples of how GREAT Albatross is.

Do you have Albatross? How do you rock it?

..and speaking of shimmery thangs, L’Oreal HIP has graced us with some new shadows.

I tweeted this yesterday and most folx weren’t impressed. I’m not either as they seem to be a tad bit frosty. But we’ll see….I’ll snag them and do some swatching. Of course when they go on sale. LOL!

Have an awesome weekend,
