Mascara Monday: d.j.v. beautenizer Volume Lash mascara

Okay y’all…I usually try to stay somewhat vague in my mascara intros but I’m so excited about this one. And I just can’t hide it. This is hands down one of the best mascaras that I’ve ever tried. In fact, I am so over the moon about it that I could probably end the review with that. But I won’t. I know you want more. You deserve more. And so more you get!

Price: $23.00 from Sephora and Sephora.com
Packaging (brush wand): 4 out of 5
Overall: 5 out of 5

What It Claims: Per Sephora.com

Created by the makers of Fiberwig LX, this innovative film-coating formula encapsulates each lash within a smooth and non-clumping film. Ingredients include conditioning oils with botanical essences and panthenol for added strengthening and moisturizing. Better yet, the smudge-proof formula can be easily removed with warm water.

The Truth: If you don’t get any other mascara this year, GET THIS ONE! Yes, the caps were warranted.

What I Loved About It: It gave me an insane amount of volume. And it’s paraben free!

What I Didn’t Like: It dries quickly so if you goal is to have insane volume, you have to work quickly.

Overall: Oh dear heavens…this is currently the IT mascara for me. One that I will keep recommending for weeks and months to come. Especially to my gals and girls who know no price when it comes to mascara. I say that because beautenizer Volume Lash retails for $24 which can be pretty expensive for a mascara. However, I am positive that if you give this a try, you will be extremely satisfied.

This mascara has many attributes that makes it different from the average mascara. So many that I think making a list would be the best way to put it all out there for you.

-3D Film-Coating Formula
-Each stroke volumizes and dries quickly to prevent clumping
-Volume sculpting brush holds large amount of formula between bristles, which comb through each and every lash
-Mascara includes panthenol, a natural silk extract that helps to nourish and strengthen lashes.
-Removes easily with water without damaging lashes.

Wow, right? Each and every one of those attributes translate to amazing volumized lashes. Does the name and packaging look familiar? Who remembers Imju Fiberwig? I reviewed that mascara some years ago. A new Fiberwig has hit the scenes and I’ll be reviewing beautenizer Fiberwig LX soon.

So why should you buy this mascara? Why am I so excited about it? And is it really worth $24?

Simply put…yes. While this mascara does require some technique, if you apply it correctly, you will end up with gorgeous and lush lashes. The key is to NOT let the mascara dry in between coats. I found that two coats was all I needed but if your goal is to go for three, letting the mascara dry will result in clumps. This is tricky because in theory, a lot of us mascara appliers like to apply 1 coat to one eye and another coat on the other and THEN start applying a second coat. Your best bet is to work on one eye at a time.

Even if you aren’t a fan of the wiggling method, I found this to be the best way to get maximum results. The wand is pretty groovy.

While it doesn’t make applying to the inner corners all that easy, it does deposit a good amount of mascara on each lash without overdoing it. Because the mascara has a film-coating formula, once it dries, you don’t have to worry about smudging or flaking. Removal is easy peasy in that you simply wet your fingers, gently massage your eye lashes and remove. Not that I like to fall asleep with mascara on, but if I did, this is the one I’d sleep in simply because it won’t smudge in the least.

Oh, and the fact that it’s paraben-free without synthetic dyes and fragrances makes me love it even more.

Bare Lashes

Lashes after 2 coats

Aaaaand, this is what happens if you apply a first coat and let it dry before you apply a second coat.

Clumpy Wumpies. We don’t want those now do we?

Do I recommend it?: Absolutely. If there is one mascara splurge you make this year, it should be this one.

Have you tried this mascara yet?
What do you think?

Mascara Monday: Rimmel Volume Accelerator mascara

Anything that starts with Rimmel and ends in Accelerator gets me just a liiiittle excited. Remember Rimmel Lash Accelerator? That mascara not only held a special place in my heart because it was my 100th review but also because, um…it was an amazing mascara. And I do mean amazing! I loved it so much that I ended up giving away 10 of them.  Will its volume promising sister give me the same results?

Price: $8.99
Packaging (brush wand): 2 out of 5
Overall: 2 out of 5

What It Claims: Per the packaging…

The Truth: What the heck, Rimmel? This is not good. This isn’t good at all.

What I Loved About It: Even though the application sucked, it did okay with lasting all day.

What I Didn’t Like: The formula was far too watery.

Overall: Oh no. I didn’t want to NOT like this mascara. I had such high hopes considering Rimmel LASH Accelerator was one dynamite mascara. Surely the sequel would be just as good, right? Wrong. Even if it’s volume, length or both that you seek, you’re better off getting it from either Lash Accelerator or Extra WOW Lash mascaras. It’s just that simple. There were many attributes that made this mascara fail for me. First let’s get on the oopy goopy formula.

I found the formula to be extremely watery. I mean, reallllly watery. It was one of the most wateriest (wait, is that a word?) mascaras that I’ve ever used. Just like a mascara that has a thick formula, application can be extremely tricky and sometimes impossible. Watery mascaras can result in the formula seeping in your eyes, and if you have sensitive eyes, you may endure burning and/or eye irritation. Not cool, uh? Lucky I didn’t experience any of those, but I found it tough to apply the mascara. It took for ever to completely coat the lashes and when I did, I barely noticed. Then there was the tube.

‘elllo doooown thereeeee. I call the super large holes in mascaras the dreaded Black Abyss. This is what happens when there is no stopper in the packaging. This can be a chronic case in ALL Rimmel Volume Accelerator mascaras  or perhaps just the one that I have. Either way, it isn’t pleasant and it can be a bit on the unsanitary side as every time I dipped the wand in the tube, I had to remove it and widp off the residue. Yucky. And then there’s the wand…

It’s just…massive. Wands like these are just so unfriendly. Guys and gals with smaller lashes and lids will struggle with trying to get the inner corners. Every time I tried to apply it, I ended up getting a mess load of mascara on my lower lashline . I spent a lot of time cleaning up after application. And so even after you’ve gotten past the watery formula, Black Abyss and massive wand, the mascara won’t provide the kind of volume you would expect having gone through all of that work. It will look mediocre at best. And that boys and girls makes me sad. :(

Bare Lashes

Lashes after 2 coats

Do I recommend it?: Nope. If you’ve got a volume mascara that you already like, stick with that. Or, if you really want to try it, catch it when it’s on sale.

Have you tried any of the mascaras in the Accelerator line? What do you think about ‘em?

Mascara Monday: Clinique High Definition Lashes Brush Then Comb mascara

Have y’all heard about this mascara or am I the only loser late to the party? I was browsing Clinique’s site one day only to come across this little gem. And don’t you just love how blunt the name of the mascara is. Forget all the frilly adjectives here, folx. Clinique straight up told us ‘You brush, then comb’. I am lovin’ the keep it real-ness. But is the mascara just as straight up? Let’s find ouuuuut.

Price: $14.50 from Clinique.com and Clinique counters
Packaging (brush wand): 5 out of 5
Overall: 4 out of 5

What It Claims: Now brush, comb. Create. Brush-side coats with dramatic colour. Comb-side separates to perfection. Transforms each and every lash with extreme length and definition. Ophthalmologist tested. (source)

The Truth: Seriously Clinique…this is why you rock.

What I Loved About It: This one is easy. The wand, the wand, the wand!!

What I Didn’t Like: I don’t even have any complaints. I’m just…shocked and amazed. Well, I take that back. The formula is a little on the thick side.

Overall: I love reviewing mascaras with supe cool wands. A wand can often make or break a mascara’s performance. Even if you’ve got the best formula dumped inside a gorgeous tube, if the wand is the pits, chances are the mascara will suck. Unfair, I know but that’s just how it is in the mascara game.

Clinique has ingeniously combined the best of both worlds of a wand, a brush and a comb. I like both. I thought the comb-like wand on Maybelline Lash Sylist (RIP) was great. To see a comb incorporated alongside a brush is just like…OMG, amazing!

And the #1 reason why I’m so giddy about this mascara wand is because I think it incredibly diverse. If you have issues applying mascara mascara with a traditional wand, the comb is just a turn of the wrist away. Do I agree with the brush first and then comb secondly aspect? Why…yes, I do! Brushing the lashes first allows you gently coat and elongate them. Combing them afterwards then allows you to separate evenly. Have you ever had a mascara that gave great volume and length but after a coat or two, it was a hot clumpy mess? I run into that problem quite frequently. And what sucks more is when you try to sort out the clumps, you’re left with a mess so big that you’re better off removing the mascara and starting over. Clinique High Definition allows you to comb through the clumps (should you have them) and elongate your lashes even more. It’s perfect!

I did find the formula of the mascara a bit on the thick side but nothing that the comb can’t tweak. A thick formula can also lead to flakiness and hard lashes, but surprisingly I didn’t run into those issues.

….and all together now.

Do I recommend it?: Oh yeah! Especially if you have wonky lashes that need some straightening out. This mascara is perfect for the job.

Am I the only crazy gal that is just now discovering this mascara? Have you tried it yet?

Mascara Monday: Maybelline Great Lash Lots of Lashes (LOL) mascara

I’ve been beyond excited about this mascara. Bee-yawn’ed. Mayelline’s Great Lash Lots of Lashes mascara excites me simply because I’ve found it to be the BEST of all of the Great Lash mascaras. I was sworn to secrecy to not say a word about this mascara for quite some time and now, I can finally let it out. Do you know how hard it is not say anything about a mascara that has a heart-shaped brush? Yeah. Not easy at all. Finally! The time has arrived. Brace yourself for the awesomeness of Great Lash LOL mascara.

Price: $6.49
Packaging (brush wand): 5 out of 5
Overall: 5 out of 5

What It Claims: Per press release

A Maybelline New York first, the heart-shaped elastomer brush simplifies the application process. In just one swipe, the great Little Grabber brush easily reaches the inner and outer corners of the eye, multiplying and building your lash look with no clumps. Just lots of clean, full lashes with no mess.

The Truth: Oh my words. This isn’t at all like the original Great Lash

What I Loved About It: That wand, baby! It’s one hot mama!

What I Didn’t Like: I hope you only like to apply 2-3 coats of mascara. Any more than that may send you to Clumps City.

Overall: I shall preface this by stating that I was never the biggest fan of the original Great Lash’s wand. I reviewed Great Lash back in 2008 and I don’t know if I was a total mascara reviewing newb back then or what, but despite my not putting it in the review, I was quite displeased with the Great Lash wand. You may say I’ve been spoiled by vibrating and spinning mascara wands to the point where I can’t appreciate a simple and no frills kind of wand, but no…the original Great Lash’s wand is just…meh. It is pretty standard in terms of mascara wands. And for some gals, that works. But in a secret hideaway world, there live us folx who desire MORE when it comes to mascara wands. We want a wand that’s easy to control, can not only sweep through our lashes with ease but also get into these inner corners. Guys and gals like us may be considered needy, but hey…we want what we want.

If the original Great Lash’s wand wasn’t enough for you, the new one is all that and a bag of Skittles. Just look how it compares to the original Great Lash.

Fantastical, right? I know, I know. It’s a beautiful. You’ll be happy to know that this heart-shaped wand (awww, Maybelline loves us) REALLY makes a difference in the overall outcome of the mascara’s performance. If mascara reviewing was math, I’d say that a mascara is made up of 4 parts. You’ve got the wand and the formula. The other two parts are brand and technique but we’ll talk about those later, class.

Having got the great wand part down, I was just wishing on a star that the formula was up to par as well. While the formula of Great Lash LOL is similar to the original Great Lash, LOL’s wand allowed me to pick up more mascara and apply more to the lashes. I was also able to get into those inner corners and lower lashes with no problems. Yes! That is what I’m talking about, Maybelline.

Some of us are picky mascara applicators. We don’t don’t feel as if we’ve done much if we don’t apply a ton of coats. If you’re that kind of applicator, Great Lash LOL may surprise you. Because of the wand’s girth, you shouldn’t need to apply more than 3 coats of mascara. And even that’s pushing it to the limit.  I love this aspect about this mascara. It doesn’t require a lot of fuss to get the job done. You apply one coat, let that dry, apply another coat and you’re done. Easy peasy! Even the Clumps kitten preferred Maybelline’s newest superstar mascara.

In terms of packaging, LOL is the same size and length as the original Great Lash.

From bare lashes to mascara coated lashes in under 3 minutes.

I didn’t experience any flaking or smudging which meant that mascara lasted for hours on end. I’m not the kind of gal that re-applies on the go. A mascara HAS to last all day for me. Great Lash LOL was quite the trooper.

Lashes with 3 Coats of mascara

This was such a special mascara to review because not only does this mascara’s release remind of  me of how iconic Maybelline is, but I was also one of the first to test Great Lash LOL out. Very cool. Very very cool.

Do I recommend it?: Um….yeahhhh!! Especially if you tried the original Great Lash and didn’t like the wand. This wand will totally win you over. I promise. Give it a try.

What do you think? Will you give this version of Great Lash a try?

Mascara Monday: tarte Gifted Amazonian Clay Smart mascara

What don’t I love about tarte? From their lippies to their blushes and bronzers, tarte always knows how to make a gal feel special. Thing is, though, I’ve haven’t had much luck with their mascaras. They’ve always been average at best, for me.  Can this Gifted Amazonian Clay Smart mascara change my mind? Let’s see…

Price: $19 at Sephora and Sephora.com
Packaging (brush wand): 4 out of 5
Overall: 4 out of 5

What It Claims: Per Sephora.com

This amazing mascara delivers a 406% increase in lash volume and long-term reparative, rebuilding, and strengthening benefits with each swipe giving you instant results and better lash health. Just as it intuitively restores hydration and texture in skin, Amazonian clay intuitively hydrates and replenishes dry and brittle lashes to prevent fallout. High performance natural™Amazonian clay performs all day by absorbing oil to balance mascara and keep product in place for flake-free longer wear. It lends itself to deepen pure color pigments creating a volume-boosting formula with higher intensity and truer pure color. The result is healthier and more voluminous lashes that won’t ever flake or transfer, naturally. After daily wear, lashes are intact, healthier and stronger. This mascara prevents lash loss and promotes lash health.
The Truth: Hmm, I may be able to get down with this one.

What I Loved About It: The formula feels niiiiice. And the packaging. I mean, come on…it is hands down one of the best dressed mascaras that I’ve ever seen.

What I Didn’t Like: It wasn’t super volumizing and got a little clump-alicious around the second coat.

Overall: This may very well be my favorite tarte mascara. While it didn’t provide the kind of volume that I really wanted, it’s better than the other tarte mascaras that I’ve tried. So yippie to that! tarte’s been on this “amazonian clay” bandwagon for quite some time and while I can’t say I know everything about the clay’s properties, I do know one thing, it certainly enhances their products. Remember the Amazonian Clay blushes? Those totally rocked the house.

406% increase is a bit of a stretch. I only tested this mascara for a week so I can’t speak much on the long-term aspect. What I do know (and I’ve probably said this a dozen times) is that a mascara must be off the charts to encourage one to use it repeatedly to see results. That said, this mascara is definitely one that I could see myself using for weeks and months at a time. The wand makes application a cinch.

tarte has always been really good with wands so I certainly wasn’t worried. Mascara novices and professionals both won’t have any trouble using it. But like all tarte mascaras, if you’re looking for insane volume, you won’t find it. Which, for me, is okay sometimes. Most times I want lashes from here to Timbuktu. I’ve come to expect this from natural mascaras. What you don’t get when it comes to volume is a green mascara that is gentle on the eyes and without all of the synthetic ingredients and preservatives. Another issue I had with tarte’s mascaras is I felt as if they didn’t last as long. The Amazonian Clay mascara lasts significantly longer. Yaaaay! It may flake away by the end of the day, but if you don’t blame on running in the rain, working out and dumping your face in a bucket of water, we amazed at how well this does hold up. Like most natural mascaras, this kid won’t leave your lashes hard and brittle. Your lashes will be soft and wispy.

Do I recommend it?: Yep. It is definitely one of the better tarte mascaras. I’m impressed!

Any tarte lovers in the house? Have you tried this one yet?

Mascara Monday: Rimmel Extra Lash Wow mascara

Well ‘ello there, Rimmel. It’s been quite a while since I’ve reviewed a mascara from you. I’ve got to keep my eyes on this brand. They always seem to launch mascaras without my knowing. Let’s see how this one fared.

Price: $7.99 at Walgreens…or any drugstore.
Packaging (brush wand): 3 out of 5
Overall: 5 out of 5

What It Claims: Per packaging

The Truth: Hopin’ this mascara gives me some WOW factor.

What I Loved About It: It’s a great lightweight mascara. And I found it to be incredibly build-able. Be it 1 coat or 3 coats, it did a great job at not clumping.

What I Didn’t Like: It doesn’t wear as long as I would like it to and it tends to flake a bit.

Overall: Oh snap. Fo real, Rimmel? What an awesome mascara to add to your line-up. If you know me and my favorite mascaras, you know that Rimmel is one of my favorite drugstore mascaras. But it’s been awhile since they’ve impressed me. Extra Wow Lash totally won me back. I’ll admit–the wand did throw me off a bit. I’m not a fan of mascaras with large wands. They tend to be extra tricky…especially for folx who are already a bit shaky when it comes to applying mascara.

Oh. Perhaps my eyes were playing tricks on me because it looks as if Extra Wow was around the same size as Maybelline’s The Falsies mascara. The good news is, the bristles on this wand are incredible. What it has in size, it makes up in amazing bristles. Even the clumsiest mascara applier shouldn’t have too many problems applying. The formula is nice and consistent without being on the “super thick” side. Although, I really would not have minded if it was a little thicker. While Rimmel says that this is a volume mascara, I think it does a better job at being a separating and lengthening mascara. I would love to see a waterproof version of this. It flaked on me a bit throughout the day but I’m sure that could be alleviated with a waterproof formula mascara. Still. I am beyond in love with this mascara. Way to go, Rimmel!

Do I recommend it?: Hecks yah! And grab one for one of your favorite mascara lovin’ peeps too.

Another Rimmel win! Have you tried this mascara yet?

Mascara Monday: Lancôme HYPNÔSE Doll Lashes mascara

Yay! Lancôme has a new mascara. It’s been a while since we’ve seen one from one of my favorite high-end mascara brands. This mascara promises to give flirty doll-like lashes with its paraben-free formula. I know, right? Who knew Lancôme had a paraben-free mascara? Woo hoo!

Price: $25 at Sephora stores and Sephora.com
Packaging (brush wand): 5 out of 5
Overall: 4 out of 5

What It Claims: Per Sephora.com

This mascara helps create Lancôme’s most flirtatious lash look. A new, unique, cone-shaped brush provides an extremely smooth application, precisely defining even your hard-to-reach corners and lower lashes. This expert formula lifts and thickens every single lash without weighing it down. (source)

The Truth: Totally loving this one!

What I Loved About It: The wand is pretty epic. We haven’t seen one like this before. The cone-shape makes it super easy to get those corners and apply on the bottom lashes.

What I Didn’t Like: The formula didn’t seem to be as long lasting as other Lancôme mascaras.

Overall: One of the most common questions I get when it comes to Lancôme mascaras is “How does X-Lancôme mascara compare to Y-Lancôme?” Wanna know the truth? I can hardly remember Lancôme Définicils Precious Cells  from Lancôme Oscillation Intensity. Having reviewed more than 100 mascara, I tend to forget the pros and cons of many mascaras. In fact, most times, I have to search through the Mascara Bin to remember my own experiences with a mascara.Crazy, uh?

Anywhoovers , can we really talk about what surprised me most about this mascara? The fact that is comes without so many bad stuffs.

Really Lancôme? I’m not complaining but I didn’t think you had it in you. It’s hard to find a higher-end brand that omits parbens and synthetic dyes and fragrances. I’m elated! Lancôme won even more cool points with me. And it doesn’t hurt that the mascara isn’t too shabby either. I found the formula to be a little on the thick side but nothing too outrageous. I had such a fun time using the wand. It really made getting into the corners a breeze. While I am usually a 2-coat mascara applier, I pushed it to the limit and applied 3 coats. And I didn’t run into any clumps either. The formula got a little wonky but with slow and smooth strokes, you can really bring out your lashes on 3 coats. The only thing that stopped this mascara from receiving 5 out of 5 marks is because it doesn’t hold up as well as I would like it to. Granted, it’s not a waterproof mascara so it’s not its job to last for hours on end but still…

Do I recommend it?: Sure! Lancôme mascaras are on the pricey side but if you’re a higher-end lovin’ gal ,I think you’ll love this one.

Hey Lancôme lovers, have you tried this mascara yet?
