Mascara Monday: Revlon Grow Luscious mascara

Well well, my darlings. Look what we have here. Another Revlon mascara review. After being highly disappointed with the Double Twist mascara, my hopes weren’t so high for Grow Luscious. Did Revlon win me back or are they still on my naughty list?

Revlon Grow Luscious by Fabulash

Price: 4 out of 5($9.99 from Walgreens)
Packaging (Brush Wand): 2 out of 5
Overall: 2.5 out of 5

What it claims:
Per packaging

The truth:
Uh…maybe Revlon should just retire from mascara making. I’m just sayin’…

What I loved about it: Why lie? I didn’t love anything about it.
What I didn’t like: The flaking was out of control.

Overall:  Okay, first things first. This is one mascara that makes A LOT of claims.  Let’s list them, shall we? Grow Luscious claims to:

-Give you longer and lusher lashes
-Give you stronger lashes with prolonged use
-Make those lashes waterproof
-Improve lashes overall appearance

As a mascara reviewer, I could not dedicate a month or so to see if this mascara improved my lashes’ overall appearance. Because of that, I will not judge that aspect of the mascara. But I will say this…a mascara has to be pretty darn good for me to want to have to use it regularly. If it is less than up to par, then I don’t care WHAT it promises, I’ll just stop using it.

And that’s the thing about Grow Luscious. It isn’t the kind of mascara that made me want to keep using it to see if my lashes would indeed get stronger. For one, I didn’t notice much length. Or volume. I mean, I got a little bit of both but I was looking for something more.

Waterproof? Not so much! In fact, I experienced nothing but flakes with this mascara. See…

And this was happening whether I rubbed my eyes a few minutes after applying or if I rubbed my eyes a few HOURS later. The mascara seemed to flake away by the end of the day. Which is NEVER a good thing with mascaras; especially for contact users and those with sensitive eyes. You risk a greater chance of eye irritation with flaky mascaras.

And then we run into the SAME packaging issues that Double Twist gave us. Like that HUGE hole.

Look familiar?

I really don’t know HOW and why Revlon keeps getting this wrong. Don’t they realize that a larger wand entrance means that you end up pulling out (and wasting) a whooole bunch of mascara? And we won’t even talk about the kind of bacteria that has the chance of getting in your mascara when you wipe the excess mascara on the side of the tube. With my Double Twist review, many commenters said that they experienced the exact same thing. So I ruled out my having a bad tube. And if I DID have a bad tube, well so did other ladies in Michigan, Australia, the UK and Canada. LOL…I’m being sarcastic, y’all.

The wand is less than perfect too.

This is not my ideal mascara wand as I find it to be difficult to control; especially if you have smaller lids and lashes. And it doesn’t make it easy for separating as well. Notice the huge glob of mascara at the end of the wand? Hmm mmm…this means you can use the tip to get in those inner corners.

Would I recommend it?: Nope. Not at all.

I was very careful in reviewing this mascara. I didn’t want my experiences with Double Twist to sway my opinion for this one. But it looks like Revlon is making the SAME mistakes. Even if I loved what the actually mascara did, they still get a fail in the packaging department. And I’m not the only one saying this. Want to know the most popular Clumps of Mascara blog post EVER? It’s the Revlon Double Twist review. Many left comments in that post claiming that they had the same awful experiences with Double Twist. Fail and double fail. While Grow Luscious is nowhere near as bad and Double Twist, it’s just not good either. I don’t know. I don’t want to write off Revlon completely because I actually like their polishes and lippies. But maybe mascaras just ain’t they thang. I can deal with that.

What say you?

Until next time…..

A crazed mascara reviewer,

Mascara Monday: Chanel Inimitable Waterproof mascara

Finally! I am reviewing another mascara that has been on my “To Be Reviewed” list for a little over a year. I know, I know. I am certainly late with this one but let’s go ahead and get this party started!

Chanel Inimitable Waterproof mascara

Price: 1 out of 5($30…yowzers!)
Packaging (Brush Wand): 5 out of 5
Overall: 5 out of 5

What it claims:
“Exceptionally gorgeous lashes that stay that way, even through inclement weather or time in the pool, are now yours. The mascara that delivers it all — volume, length, curl and precise separation — does it with a long-wearing, waterproof formula that won’t flake or smudge. Pro-Vitamin B5 hydrates and conditions lashes to keep them supple and healthy-looking. A unique brush design provides precise definition and separation of lashes, even the finest.” (source)

The truth:
Um, yeah…this is a $30 winner!
What I loved about it: It feels light on the lashes and gives GREAT volume!
What I didn’t like:Well, because I’m cheap and don’t like spending this much on a mascara, I wasn’t a fan of the price.

Overall:  I’m not much of a shopper. Never have been. I shop only when I need to (which is usually the day or night before a big event) and I’m in and out within an hour. But there’s something about strolling through department stores like Bloomingdale’s. I could have $6.49 to my name and I would still want to try on shoes, glide my fingers over purses and play in luxury make-up lines. Including Chanel; a brand that I have never tried before.

This mascara REALLY surprised me. I’ve heard both good and bad about it but…wow! It really exceeded my expectations. Yes, it has a ridiculously high price tag and true, it’s a mascara that I would never purchase without y’all requesting it but it is phenomenal! This mascara gave me such thick lashes. It is build-able so you can apply one coat or three coats without running into clump issues. Score! Inimitable leaves the lashes light weight and that eliminates flaking. My least favorite thing about it is that it burns! Perhaps it’s just me but I noticed my eyes burning just a wee bit when the first coat. Not sure what that’s about. I don’t think it’s a deal breaker because it wasn’t painful or uncomfortable, just…odd.

The wand reminds me a lot of Maybelline’s Pulse Perfection‘s wand.

Which is a good thing because it makes for great separation. Are you a fan of waterproof mascaras? Oh yeah…this baby holds up!

Lashes without mascara
(curled lashes)

Lashes with 2 coats of mascara

Would I recommend it?: I do! While I think there are drugstore mascaras that can give you the same results, it’s great to know that you can get what you paid for with this Chanel mascara.

Until next time…..

A crazed mascara reviewer,

Mascara Monday: Guess how many I’ve reviewed?

Check out one of my tweets from last night…

 It’s true!!

And feel free to count the reviews if you don’t believe me. ;)

If all else fails in this thing called life, I can always say my contribution to (wo)mankind was providing honest mascara reviews. Ha! I’m taking a break this go ’round to get some commentary from you guys.

What’s your absolute FAVORITE mascara? And what’s one that you hate? Are you a dedicated buyer of the same mascara or do you like to buy the newest ones hitting the shelf?  Got any recs, tips or questions for me?

Let me know! I’ll be back next week with the 83rd mascara review.  I think by the time we  hit 100, I should have a massive mascara giveaway. Maybe giving away one a day for a week? Hmm….whatcha think?

Have a great Monday!

Mascara Monday: Maybelline XXL Pro-Bold

Here’s my 3rd out of 4 reviews of Maybelline XXL Pro mascaras. While some mascaras promise curl, length or volume..this baby promises uh…boldness. Yeah, don’t ask questions yet. Let’s get this party started!

Maybelline XXL Pro Bold mascara

Price: 5 out of 5
Packaging (Brush Wand): 3 out of 5
Overall: 3 out of 5

What it claims:

The truth:
Uh…I still don’t know what I’m looking for.

What I loved about it: I think it gives great volume!
What I didn’t like: It was a bit too flake-tastic for me.

Overall:  Every now and then I come across a mascara that puzzles me. Such is the case with this baby here. Now don’t judge me but I am a writer and a self-proclaimed etymologist. Words are my best friends and when they don’t make sense, it makes me want to cry. WTF is ‘bold volume’? What does that even mean? I don’t know about this one, Maybelline. As far as what this mascara is supposed to do, all we get is that it is supposed to provide ’24HR wear and bold volume’. How does bold volume compare to regular volume? I don’t even know, chile.

So while I’m puzzled at the claims of this mascara, I must say…it did do what it said it was going to do in terms of volume. It provided a good amount! But is it bold? Um, I don’t know. It wasn’t THAT bold but it was good nonetheless. But when it came to the 24HR wear, uh not so much. Not only did it not last an entire work day, but it would also start flaking on me a few hours after applying. This is no bueno for those with irritable eyes or contact wearers. But check this out…

This is a fiber mascara. Most fiber mascaras provide length, not volume. Interestiiiiing. But this does give some explanation as to why it flaked on me a bit.

Like the other mascaras in the XXL Pro family, it is dual ended.

Step 1, which promises volume…

And Step 2, which promises “24HR wear”…

The wands were so so. Not good or bad but average.

Lashes without mascara
(curled lashes)

Lashes with 2 coats of mascara

After 1 coat of Step 1…

After 1 coat of Step 2…

The volume is pretty darn good, uh? Oh yeah! But I’m still lost on that whole “bold” thing. This really should have been called a volume mascara and left at that. I’m just sayin’…
Would I recommend it?: I think Maybelline makes better volume mascaras. The wands on this one weren’t THAT great and although the volume is pretty good, the flaking just ain’t fun.

Until next time…..

Mascara Monday: Stila Cosmetics Black Diamond mascara

Diamonds on my neck. Diamonds on my wrist. Ah haaa! I’m jivin’, y’all. I don’t have diamonds on my neck or wrist. But I’ve got them on my eye lashes thanks to Stila. Sooo…is this mascara a diamond in the rough? Or just rough?

Stila Cosmetics Black Diamond mascara

Price: 2 out of 5
Packaging (Brush Wand): 3 out of 5
Overall: 3 out of 5

What it claims:
“Lavish your lashes in luxury – swirled with real crushed diamonds, Black Diamond mascara is sure to become your lashes’ new best friend! Swirled with shimmer and infused with genuine Black Diamond powder, this plush, innovative formula leaves you with long, defined, brilliant-looking lashes. “ (source)

The truth:
My eyes aren’t sparkling like diamonds. *tears*
What I loved about it: The packaging is tres chic! I love the swirl-tastic-ness of the blue and silver.

What I didn’t like: It’s a little clumpy wumpy. And it’s hard to get to the silver/blue part of the mascaras because the wand goes straight down. I can’t get it!

Overall:  For the most part, I’ve been afraid of glitter-y mascaras. I have one experience and have ran far far away from any other glitter infused mascaras. Those little glitter pieces always seem to fall in my eyes; no matter how microscopic they are.

Stila’s Diamond mascaras are a little different. you don’t really get to the silver and blue parts of the mascara. Which kinda sucks because not getting that part defeats the whole point of using that kind of mascara, right? Nonetheless…it’s still a pretty decent mascara. It comes with a traditional wand.

The lengethening factor was okay but I wasn’t super impressed. I did a experience a bit of flaking hours after a inital application. No bueno!

Mascara Monday: CoverGirl Lash Blast Fusion

Sooo, CoverGirl drops a new CoverGirl Last Blast. Is anyone just as excited as I am? The original promised insane volume. And according to my review…it delivered! Lash Blast Fusion is all about volume AND length? Was it hot? Or not so much?

CoverGirl Lash Blast Fusion mascara

Price: 5 out of 5
Packaging (Brush Wand): 5 out of 5
Overall: 4 out of 5

What it claims:
“Use Lash Blast Fusion to get a blast of volume plus incredible length! It’s the perfect fusion of Lash Blast’s super-volumizing brush and a buildable fiber-stretch lengthening formula that work together for dense, long-looking lashes!” (per packaging)

The truth:
Yay! I’m happy to see another fiber mascara on the market. And with the Lash Blast wand? Awesome!
What I loved about it: The wand!

Which is totally ironic because it took me forever to like the wand on the original…

What I didn’t like: The volume isn’t as va-va-voom as the original.

Overall:  I was SO excited to review this mascara. I mean, who didn’t love the original Lash Blast?  That’s really a rhetorical question, y’all. I know somewhere out there isn’t the biggest fan of it. I thought it was the ideal mascara for separation and volumizing.

Now first things first, know that the review in this mascara review is Black Brown. I usually use black mascaras and for that reason, the mascara may not POP as much as it does in my other mascara reviews. But you know what? I actually like the natural look that black brown mascaras give. I’ll have to be trying some more of these.

CoverGirl Lash Blast Fusion is a fiber mascara. Remember what a fiber mascara is? It’s all about little itty bitty “fiber-like” that are intended to attach on to your lashes. They are like washable extensions. You can get a good view of them in my video review.

Fusion seems to be a little lighter on the lashes than the original Lash Blast was. I also find that it clumps less. You can get a good 2-3 coats with this without entering Clumps City. And that’s a huge plus in my book. I didn’t experience any flaking and like most fiber mascaras, it rinses off without any problems.

So in terms of it being a good mascara on its own…yes, I think it is! But when comparing it to the original Lash Blast, I don’t think it’s THAT much better. They are both good. Period.

Lashes without mascara
(curled lashes)

Lashes with 2 coats of mascara

Would I recommend it?: The thing is…I experienced a good amount of length with the original Lash Blast. I can’t really see much of a difference between the two other than the visible “fibers”. If you haven’t tried the original Lash Blast, give this one a whirl. Or, you if you REALLY liked the original and just want to see if you can maximize your length, give this one a try.

Until next time…..

Mascara Monday: Rimmel Lash Maxxx mascara

If I had to say which brand of mascaras I get the most requests for…it’s Rimmel! Here’s another kid to add to the family…

Rimmel Lash Maxxx

I spy with my brown eye a mascara wand with a comb. WOOOO!!! But was it good or a bust?

Price: 5 out of 5 (I got it for about $5.69 at Target)
Packaging (Brush Wand): 5 out of 5
Overall: 4 out of 5

What it claims:
Per the packaging…

The truth: I’m just loving that it’s a comb!

What I loved about it: The comb, of course. I LOVED Maybelline’s Lash Stylist and almost died a thousand deaths when I found it was discontinued. Rimmel brought me back to life with this wand.

What I didn’t like: It doesn’t provide a lot of volume or length, but then again, I don’t think it’s supposed to.

Overall: Reading is fundamental. Seriously! If you notice the packaging of this mascara, it said nothing about volumizing or lengthening. This mascara is designed to separate your lashes. One lash is supposed to look like three lashes. It’s all about multiplying, baby! Does Lash Maxx do this? Absolutely!

It really only takes one coat of this mascara to do the job. I found that it REALLY clumps with a second or third coat. Lash Maxxx is great for training the lashes to go in a certain direction. If you’re like me and have lashes that go in allll directions, one coat of Lash Maxx is great at thoroughly coming through the lashes. So to my ladies that have lashes that go straight down, this may be a great mascara for you.

I had to zoom in just to show you how serious the separation is.

Would I recommend it?: Sure! Especially if your lashes go alllll over.

A crazed mascara reviewer,

Mascara Monday: Lancome Hypnose Drama

So far I’ve been pretty impressed with Lancome’s mascaras. Is this another winner?

Lancome Hypnose Drama

Hit the jump to read more if you just can’t take the suspense.

Price: 3 out of 5
Packaging (Brush Wand): 5 out of 5
Overall: 5 out of 5

What it claims:
Per the packaging…

The full contact brush, with its S-shaped curve, grasps and loads lashes for a fanned out, eye-popping, full body fringe. It works magic on tiny lashes. Even dramatizes corner lashes other brushes miss—or worse, mess. (source)

The truth: Um….WOW!!!

What I loved about it: The S-shaped wand is awesome! But it’s not so much the wand that makes application great…it’s the bristles and how separated they are. Perfection!

What I didn’t like: I can’t think of one thing I didn’t like. And when you see the before/after pictures, you’ll agree with me.

Overall: It’s very rare that I find a find a REALLY good volume mascara. And when I do find one, I usually have to put it to the side to review other mascaras. I’ve been sticking with Lancome Hypnose Drama for quite some time now. I’m on my second tube. This says A LOT. Aside from the price, I think it is definitely a must have for any volume-seeking lady. But you get what you pay for hence why I have no problem saving my pennies for this mascara.

I’m not sure why, but it has a pleasant scent to it. But don’t worry…it’s not TOO overpowering. It is a wee bit heavy on the lashes but only if you over-do it on coats.

…and then with one more coat

Insane, right? One coat gives me great lashes but two coats gives me crazy drama. Loves it!

Would I recommend it?: Absolutely!

Lancome Définicils Pro
Lancome Oscillation
