Mascara Monday: Eyeko Fat Brush mascara

It cracks me up when some makeup brands get all literal with their descriptions. Eyeko wasn’t like “Massive plumping brush”. They’re all like…”fat brush”. Ha! *snort* It’s the little things, y’all. The little things… Anyway, when I got this to review I just knew I had to share it with the blog fam!

EYEKO FAT BRUSH

And obviously this wand ain’t little. It’s fat. Didn’t you read the description?

Eyeko Fat Brush mascara

Price: $19 from Eyeko.com.
Packaging (brush wand): 3 out of 5
Overall: 3 out of 5

What It Claims: “Our super-sized dense bristle brush coats lashes from root to tip building a volumised full lash fringe. Complimented by our fibre-enhanced Keratin formula to boost lashes with carbon black finish for visibly thicker and defined lashes. ” (source)

The Truth: The wand is definitely on the thick side.

What I Loved About It: The packaging. This is seriously the best mascara wand everrrrr!!!

What I Didn’t Like: While the formula was nice, the mascara’s performance overall was just…eh.

Overall: Man, I love me some Eyeko. It’s been over a year since I’ve tried their Skinny Brush Mascara and I’m trying to figure out what has taken me so long to play with their mascaras again. Eyeko is most known for their innovative mascara packaging but I’ve also heard that their eyeliners are amaziiiiiing.

Also amazing is this mascara’s wand…

Eyeko Fat Brush wand

Yes, it’s large and in charge (like me, boo!) but I like it. I’m a fan of larger mascara wands. I don’t need to use them often but when it comes to coating the lashes in just a few coats, large wands tend to get the job done. They also make it difficult to get in the inner corners and bottom lashes, but c’mon now, girlfriend. Stop being picky. You can have it all. Application is easy enough but my folx with smaller lids and lashes may run into some trouble.

The good news is, because it’s a fiber mascara, you can take small strokes up to the tips of your lashes for extra long. In fact, I found that to be more effective that attempting to get volume from sweeping the lashes at the base of my lashes. I found the formula to be very lightweight. It was memorable but it wasn’t terrible either.

I think I like the Skinny Brush mascara better because at least you have more control. I think my guys and girls with nice and thick lashes will like a mascara like this because it’ll take their lashes over the level. Those of us who already have puny lashes, however, we won’t see any dramatic differences. Womp.

But the mascara does have some other good specs – it’s paraben-free, contains conditioning keratin and it’s water-resistant.

Do I recommend it?: I’d say nay. I think you’re better off with the Skinny Brush mascara.

Soooo is anyone else in love with Eyeko’s packaging?

Mascara Monday: ELLIS FAAS mascara

Every now and then I run into a beauty brand that I’ve never heard of. It doesn’t happen often but when it does, I get embarrassed about it.

“How have you never heard of ELLIS FAAS, B?”

“I don’t know. I just haven’t…..”

I mean, yeah…I live under a rock but when you’ve been beauty blogging, er’body expects you know er’thing. So shoot me! I haven’t heard of ELLIS FAAS and didn’t until I got a sample of this mascara in my Makeup Show Orlando Blogger Preview bag. And whoooooa…

ELLIS VAAS mascaraI dun seen the light.

ELLIS VAAS

Price: $34 from Sephora and Sephora.com.
Packaging (brush wand): 5 out of 5
Overall: 5 out of 5

What It Claims: “A creamy mascara that perfectly coats, lengthens and separates each individual lash.” (source)

The Truth: I love this mascara!!

What I Loved About It: What an incredible wand! And the formula is just beautiiiiful!

What I Didn’t Like: Well, the price is pretty up there but hey, in some cases you get what you pay for. And this mascara is amazing!

Overall: I never got around to really exploring the ELLIS FAAS booth at The Makeup Show Orlando 2013 but I walked past it a few times. I am now kicking myself in the butt for it because if their mascara is this great, I can only imagine what everything else is like. I’m a drugstore lover at heart but sometimes higher end mascaras have a really different (and sometimes better) feel. This mascara just feels luxurious. And I love how simple and uncomplicated the wand is.

ELLIS VAAS mascara wand

I’m starting to prefer the traditional mascara brushes over the plastic wands but when it comes to brushes, I don’t want them huge. This wand is perfect. It is small enough to get in those inner corners but it is large enough to coat each and every lash. I’m thinking those with smaller lids and lashes won’t have any problem with getting this mascara to really coat all of those lashes. The long handle makes it easy to really get into those lashes.

And while I really love the wand my favorite aspect about it is the wonderful formula. This non-clumping, gel-like formula of love is so easy to apply to the lashes. I found that it was also buildable so whether you wanted just 1 coat or 10 coats, chances are you won’t run into any clumps. It isn’t exactly water-resistant so I’m not sure if I would wear this if I knew I was going to the beach but for day-to-day indoor use…it’s fantastic!

I also found the mascara to be very lightweight. I applied 3 coats and still didn’t feel any heaviness to my lashes. Wow.

Do I recommend it?: If you’ve got the pennies to spare, I think you’ll love this mascara. It’s just such a pleasure to use.

Am I the only loser who hasn’t heard of ELLIS FAAS? Please tell me I’m not the only one! The good news is, I’ve found an amazing mascara and I can’t wait to check out what other gorgeous thangs the brand has.

Mascara Monday: Ck One Color mascara

CK One mascara

I received a sample of this mascara in a bag of goodies from ULTA’s 21 Days of Beauty. There was a mean sale of this mascara and I was so glad to see it for so cheap because I’ve heard amazing things about it. It’s one of those mascaras that so many people told me to try but I just never got around to trying. Until this week. I was rummaging through mascaras to see which one I needed to show love to and this baby popped up. And here’s the coolest thing about it…it’s blue!

Yeah, I know. Most of you are like…”Blue mascara? That’s like so 80’s.” I know. But I still get excited about them!

Price: $18 from ULTA stores and ULTA.com.
Packaging (brush wand): 4 out of 5
Overall: 4 out of 5

What It Claims: “Mascara by ck one Color has an adjustable mascara brush that creates customized looks and simplifies application with a quick twist of the cap. Precision curved brush and patented lycra technology amplifies, shapes, and lifts every lash for maximum volume.” (source)

The Truth: I think I like it!

What I Loved About It: I don’t know if I buy the whole “adjustable wand” thing but it’s still a fantastic mascara.

What I Didn’t Like: Adjusting the wand is hard!

Overall: Now and days mascara brands have to jump through all kinds of hoops to be appealing to us beauty guys and girls. Simply being a mascara that promises volume and length ain’t enough anymore. Mascaras have to not only bring volume, length and curl but they must pay our bills and rock our babies to sleep too. I’m just sayin’. So yes, this mascara is like all of the others in that it makes a lot of claims but its claim to fame is the adjustable wand. The concept isn’t innovative but I’ve never seen one like this before. With a turn at the top of the mascara your wand goes from this…

CK One mascara wand 2

To this…

CK One mascara wand

I don’t know if my wand was messed up or not but I found it hard to turn it…

Turn mascara

The shorter and plumper wand is supposed to help with volume and by making the wand longer, it’s supposed to help with added length. Does it work? Meh. I suppose everyone’s experiences will be different but I found that I got decent volume and length with both versions of the wand.  I love the plastic bristles. They are fantastic at combing through the lashes.

I found the mascara to last around all day and I love the stunning blue. Of course, blue mascara on dark brown skin and dark eyes doesn’t look as blue on me as it would on gals of other complexions but whatever. I still like it. The formula is spot on too. It’s a really nice mascara and I’m not sure if the adjustable wand is necessary but it’s a nice little treat to have.

Especially if you’re going to spend $18 on a mascara.

Do I recommend it?: Yep! There’s a purple mascara in this line too. I think I gotta try that one!

What do you think? Does the adjustable wand seem like a gimmick or have you found it to be effective?

Mascara Monday: NYX Le Chick Flick Boudoir mascara

NYX Le Chick Flick mascara

Last year NYX Cosmetics released an entire collection of mascaras and I am finally getting around to reviewing the last one. Le Chick Flick is all about giving waterproof lashes and like all waterproof mascaras that I try out, I had high hopes it. I am way harsh on waterproof mascaras because I’m not looking for a ton of length and volume, I just want longevity and waterproofness. Waterproofness IS a word, isn’t it?

Price: $5.99 from ULTA stores and ULTA.com.
Packaging (brush wand): 4 out of 5
Overall: 4 out of 5

What It Claims: “NYX Le Chick Flick Boudoir Mascara features a smudge-free formulation that thickens lashes as it delivers deep, dark drama. Dense dome brush reaches each and every lash.” (source)

The Truth: Oh wow…very nice longevity!

What I Loved About It: The wand is pretty awesome.

What I Didn’t Like: Meh, it’s just on the mediocre side in terms of volume and length.

Overall: It is sooooo hard to find a good waterproof mascara. Which is crazy because you would think by now, brands would have developed a decent enough formula. But nope, I am usually let down by most of the waterproof mascaras that I try. For one thing, they HAVE to have decent wands. There’s no need to have wands with a whole ‘lotta frills. Something simple will do. Which is why I love this wand…

NYX Le Chick Flick mascara wand

Wham, bam and done. It isn’t anything fancy and it does a great job at sweeping through the lashes while generously coating each lash with ease. The formula was very nice to deal with and almost had a bit of a gel-feel to it when applied to the lashes. Like many waterproof mascaras, I found that it did a great job at really adhering to the lashes without clumping them up too much. Two  coats was good enough for me and while I didn’t have those long and voluminous drag queen lashes that I always love, the mascara plumped my lashes up enough.

What really impressed me was how long it stayed around. I worked out in this mascara and it lasted through the blood, sweat and tears that are involved in my strenuous workouts. I’m kidding about the blood part. I think. But yeah, I would wipe sweaty hands across my face plenty of times and this mascara didn’t budge. Score!! This is all I ask, NYX. If you’re going to give me a waterproof mascara, make sure that baby is actually…waterproof. I’m a happy woman.

So so happy.

Do I recommend it?: I do! It’s an affordable waterproof mascara that actually works.

Anyone else out there struggle with finding decent waterproof mascaras?

Mascara Monday: Too Faced Better Than Sex mascara

Too Faced Better Than Sex mascara

Okay, ignore the fact that I haven’t done in mascara review in over 2 months. I know. Bad blogger. My excuse? I just didn’t feel like it. A little too honest, huh? My bad, y’all. Sometimes I just have to quit doing something for a few weeks and months so I don’t get insanely burned out with it, ya know? But I’m back and like after every hiatus, I am more in love with mascaras. And what better mascara to pull me out of the proverbial shell than this one?

I’m hoping that having the word sex all up and through this blog post won’t send perverted spammers my way. And if that happens, you better believe every sex will be changed to a $ex. So yeah. How blunt is that for a mascara name? You either love it or hate it. I’m a bit of a prude but I am also annoyed at every other mascara with the names like Dramatic Awesome Can’t Believe They’re Really Real Volumizing Wonderbeast so this actually works for me. It’s hard for me to hate a Too Faced product so let’s boogie on down and see how this baby did…

Price: $23 from Sephora and Sephora.com.
Packaging (brush wand): 3.5 out of 5
Overall: 4 out of 5

What It Claims: “An intensely black, volumizing mascara with an hourglass-shaped brush that separates, coats, and curls each lash to voluptuous perfection. Better Than Sex mascara contains a film-forming polymer for smudge-proof, all day wear and unique peptides for the deepest, intense black possible.” (source)

The Truth: Welllll, it’s not better than sex but it’s a close second. Bahahaaaaa!

What I Loved About It: It gives great volume!

What I Didn’t Like: The wand holds on to A LOT of mascara.

Overall: My mission these days is to provide shorter and to the point reviews. No one wants to read a dissertation on mascara. Not even me. So here goes…this is a GREAT mascara. Too Faced does really well with mascaras so I had high hopes for this one. And it delivered! Lé wand…

Too Faced Better Than Sex mascara wand

Now the wand can be a bit tricky. Because it’s more of a brush wand than a plastic wand, the bristles aren’t super stiff. This is great for folx with longer lashes but it kinda sucks for those of us with wonky all over the place lashes. I’m not sure this is the best mascara wand for combing through the lashes. And the wand tends to collect a lot of excess mascara.

But once you get past that, you’ll find a dynamite mascara with amazing volumizing and lengthening power. I really only needed 2 coats of this stuff to have my lashes REALLY stand out. The formula is on the thicker side so pushing it to more than 2 coats may result in clumping. And while I didn’t experience any flaking, I would have loved for this mascara to have a bit more staying power. My lashes didn’t seem as dynamic hours after I applied it. I’m guessing a good waterproof topcoat mascara can alleviate that problem.

Still though…it’s pretty amazing and I will definitely be making this baby my staple mascara for at least a month. Which is a big deal for me.

Do I recommend it?: Absolutely! I just wouldn’t purchase this when you’re out and about with your Grandma because that may make things awkward. Unless your Grandma is extra cool in which case…buy her one too!

Have any of you Too Faced lovers tried this mascara? Will the name of it stop you from buying it?

Mascara Monday: Avon Mega Effects mascara

Welp, here we go…finally. My review of the very awesome Avon Mega Effects mascara. I’ve got a lot to say about this kid. But of course I would. I mean, it’s not everyday you see a mascara like this. I soooo didn’t see this coming. No offense Avon, but when it comes to dynamite mascaras, I wouldn’t think to turn to you. That didn’t hurt, did it? My bad. You know what I mean. Yes, of course…Avon is a great beauty brand but I wouldn’t exactly call them innovative. Welllll, honey, this mascara is single-handily changing the game. Yeeeep! I was so exactly that I received a sample of this to review.

Avon Mega Effects Mascara review

Price: $10 from Avon.com.
Packaging (brush wand): 3 out of 5
Overall: 5 out of 5

What It Claims: “This breakthrough mascara provides 24-hour volume, leaving lashes darker, denser and more dramatic. Get ready for a corner to corner lash transformation with our first ever Wonderbrush. “ (source)

The Truth: It’s the most interesting mascara that I have ever used.

What I Loved About It: It is so easy to tote around.

What I Didn’t Like: It takes some time to really get the super lush lashes.

This is going to be a pretty lengthy review so for those of you that just want to get to the point, I’ve broken down the review in Pros and Cons.

Pros:
-It’s affordable. Only $10!
-It makes applying mascara to the bottom lashes super easy.
-It has a fantastic build-able formula.
-Ideal for traveling. It’s so small and compact!
-While not waterproof, I found it to be a pretty sturdy long-lasting mascara.
-It’s perfect for those with super small and wonky lashes.
-It really helps brings those lashes out.

Cons
-It can look rather intimidating.
-The wand may be difficult to hold for some.
-Excess mascara comes off each time you pull the wand out.
-There’s a learning curve that busy mascara lovers may not want to deal with.
-The mascara has more separating power than volumizing power.
-You have to squeeze the tube to get the wand out and that can be a bit tricky.

Avon Mega Effects Mascara packaging

Overall: I first learned of this mascara when my girl Lianne of The Makeup Girl showed it off on Instagram. Her picture had me at hello I just couldn’t wait to get my hands on this baby. And now she’s here. Is it love at first sight? Not exactly. But I gave this mascara a 5 out of 5  for a good reason. It’s just that awesome. Even if it’s not perfect. First let’s talk about the so-called wand.

Avon Mega Effects Mascara wand

Avon calls this their Wonderbrush. What makes it unique is that it is able to adjust in multiple angles. It’s pretty cool because you are really manipulate this wand to get every single lash on both the top and bottom rows of lashes. It also does a great job at getting those inner corners. The plastic bristles are stiff and long enough to sweep through the lashes effectively. However, the handle of the Wonderbrush is short. Very short. I found that it was easiest to use 2 fingers (my pointer and my thumb to apply the mascara. It’s tough for someone like me who has bad nerves. Trial and error will eventually help you find what works best but I struggled with application for quite some time.

Avon Mega Effects Mascara-3

Also, when removing the Wonderbrush from the tube, I ended up with a ton of mascara residue. Getting that brush out is already a bit tricky (you have to squeeze both sides of the tube) and once you do, you’ll see way more mascara than you’ll want to use on the brush. Sweeping it on the side of the tube isn’t BAD but not always ideal.

Now for performance – it rocks! If you’re looking for a mascara that will last all day, this is your girl. She really doesn’t budge but managed to move easily with eye makeup remover. The longevity is my favorite aspect about this mascara. Volume and length were decent. Not impeccable but I did get a nice set of lashes that stood out. The more you apply, the more va-va-voom factor your lashes will get. I got a good 4 coats without having to worry about clumping.

Do I recommend it?: Absolutely! Especially if you are looking to try something fun and interesting in the mascara world.

So yes. I adore this mascara. Mainly because I think it is crazy innovative but also because it just works really well. I should be available on Avon.com later this month. Think you’ll try it?

Mascara Monday: Clarins Wonder Waterproof mascara

I’m back with another Clarins mascara! I am slowly working my way through their mascaras and when I got a press sample of this one, I couldn’t wait to put it to use. It’s a waterproof mascara! I am always on the hunt for a good waterproof mascara. Especially in the summer time. I had high hopes for this bad boy…

Clarins Wonder Waterproof mascara

Nothing fancy in the packaging department…

Price: $27.56 from Amazon.com.
Packaging (brush wand): 4 out of 5
Overall: 3 out of 5

What It Claims: “The name says it all. This mascara not only creates volume, curl and definition but is also resistant to water.” (source)

The Truth: It’s waterproof…but only for a split second.

What I Loved About It: It has a fantastic formula and wand.

What I Didn’t Like: It just wasn’t…waterproof.

Overall: I’m a fan of Clarins. I haven’t featured many of their products but I’ve been messing around with them for a while. I’ve reviewed one of their mascaras before and I had high hopes for this one. Then again, I tend to think that when you spend a good chunk of money on higher-end cosmetics, they SHOULD work. Of course that isn’t always the case but hey…a girl can dream. At first glance, this mascara appears to have it all. It’s got decent and unassuming packaging and the wand is nice.

Clarins mascara

It reminds me a lot of those super cheap mascaras. And not in a bad way. It’s simple,  sweeps well through wonky lashes and it gets the job done. It isn’t plush so you won’t achieve insane volume but that’s okay because it’s a waterproof mascara. Any added volume would just be a perk.

Initial application of this mascara is grand. The gel-like formula laid on my lashes with ease. But because it’s a waterproof mascara I wanted to ensure that it could hold up if water hit it. So I dunked my face in a sink full of water and…the mascara stayed! I didn’t see any smudging and I was elated. And then I let my face dry and before I knew it the mascara was flaking off of my lashes. Oh boooo! It broke my heart, really. I tried testing the mascara again by spritzing my face with water and while the mascara stood up a little bit better, it eventually started to flake away. Dang it, man. The volume and lengthening is actually really decent so I was so sad that the waterpoof-ness wasn’t up to par.

Do I recommend it?: If you’re looking for a waterproof mascara, PASS. If you’re a Clarins lover who needs a decent amount of volume, go for it.

I’m still on the hunt for a fantastic waterproof mascara. Have you found one yet?

Mascara Monday: Maybelline Volum’ Express Falsies Big Eyes mascara

Goodness gracious. Mascaras have the longest names these days. I mean, my goodness….! I guess when you’ve been making mascaras since 1914, you run out of short and to the point names. I get it. Maybelline has a new mascara on the block and while I am usually excited about their new mascaras, this one didn’t excite me too much at first glance. Which is shocking because I usually go gaga over dual-wand mascaras. Did application and performance of this baby change my mind?

Maybelline Volum' Express Falsies Big Eyes mascara

Nothing fancy in the packaging department…

Maybelline Falsies Big Eyes mascara

Price: $7.99 in drugstores
Packaging (brush wand): 3 out of 5
Overall: 3.5 out of 5

What It Claims: “Revolutionary dual-ended Mascara for 360° all around Lash Glam. Two brushes specifically designed for top and bottom lashes. Special quick-dry formula holds lashes in place” (source)

The Truth: I’ve had better Maybelline mascaras but this one isn’t too shabby.

What I Loved About It: I do love the option of having two wands. Not ideal for everyday use but if you’ve got the extra time, it works!

What I Didn’t Like: The volume power is just so so.

Maybelline Volum' Express Falsies Big Eyes mascara wands

Overall: This isn’t the first time we’ve seen a wand like this from Maybelline. Back in the day they had mascaras with dual wands. One wand was for a primer and the other was the actual mascara. Those were just so so. I actually like this mascara a little bit better because at least you can see the impact that is made. I like the idea of being able to have a mascara for those hard to get smaller lashes. Most wands make it difficult to do because the wands are large. The baby wand is fantastic for this purpose. Look how wittle she is…

Maybelline Volum' Express Falsies Big Eyes skinny wand

I found that this wand is also great for grabbing the inner lashes too. And I suppose if you have super tiny lashes, they work for those too. The regular wand, however just isn’t plush enough to provide a ton of volume. I mean it does ohhhhkay.

Maybelline Volum' Express Falsies Big Eyes mascara larger wand

It’s a nice wand. I think it’s great for separating and attempting to straighten out wonky lashes but I didn’t find it to be insanely impactful for those seeking crazy huge lashes. If you’re desirous are defined lashes without much POW, this mascara will work. But if you’re like me and need for folx to see your lashes before they see you…well, you may be disappointed. On the good side, the formula was easy to apply and I didn’t get any clumps. Score! So yeah, it’s not my favorite mascara but hey, if you are serious about maintaing those bottom lashes, me thinks you’ll like this baby. I also found it to be pretty lightweight. No heavy lashes here. I had nice and fluffy lashes all day. But on the downside, fluffy lashes don’t stand up too well in Florida humidity.

Do I recommend it?: Meh. I think Maybelline has better mascaras in stores these days. Even the Rocket is better than this one.

Okay Maybelline mascara lovers, what did you think about this one?
