Mascara Monday: Maybelline XXL Pro Curl Recourber

Next up for Maybelline’s XXL Pro line is the mascara that is all about curl. Curl, baby! Some of us need volume. Some of us desire length. And some of us want curly lashes. I think it’s hard to find a good curl mascara and I seriously believe that to get a good amount of curl, you’ll need to use a eyelash curler.

 How does this baby do?

Maybelline XXL Pro Curl Recourber

Hit the jump to read more if you just can’t take the suspense.

Price: 5 out of 5
Packaging (Brush Wand): 3.5 out of 5
Overall: 5 out of 5

What it claims:
Per the packaging…

The truth: 45° angle? Uh…I didn’t know there was geometry in mascaras. Help!

What I loved about it: Like…it actually curled. Score!

What I didn’t like: Applying it can be tough because you can’t get much of a grip on the handle.

Overall: I have always been pretty skeptical when it comes to curl mascaras. Their concept always confused me. Like…exactly how can it curl? What is in the formula that makes it curl AND keeps it curled? Talk about a mystery. While I didn’t crack the case on this one, I was pretty amazed at its performance.

First of all, the etymology nerd that is me had to look up what ‘recourber’ meant. It’s French for “to bend”. I wouldn’t know how to conjugate it since my second language is Spanish, pero we digress. Aren’t you glad I cleared that up? Mascara reviews and etymology. Gotta love Clumps!

By George, girls…it curls! I know, I know…I’m am just as shocked as you all are. I really like this mascara and I think it gets the job done. Like all Maybelline XXL Pro mascaras you’ve got a primer on one end and the mascara on the other.

La Primer…

La Mascara…

The curved wand REALLY assists in the application. I used it to press up against my lashes. Like so…

I would hold it in that position for a few seconds and for the same for the next eye. This technique, I think, forces your lashes to curl a bit. Now one of the problems I did run into with this baby was the lack of grip. It was so hard to get good control of the wand because I felt like it kept hitting my face.

Yeah, I don’t know. Maybe it’s just me and my fat face. Ah well!

(did not curl lashes)

Lashes with 2 coats of mascara

First the primer…

…look, it’s already curling!And then…

Not bad at all, uh? Now, hold on just a second…I must warn you. The curl may drop just a bit throughout the day. Especially if you’re in a warm, humid or tropical climate i.e. Florida. Still…what is left is pretty impressive.
Go ‘head, Recouber. I approve!

Would I recommend it?: If you are looking for a curl mascara, this one may do you right!

Mascara Monday:Hard Candy Lash Call Lengthening mascara

Along with sending a hearty hello to all of Brittany’s fabulous readers, allow me to introduce myself. My name is Asha and I’m a college friend Britt trusted to do a guest mascara review. I’ll do my best to make her proud. Ahem!*clears throat* Here goes nothing:

One of my personal mottos is this: Every girl needs her daily dose of Urban Decay. So, when I discovered the company selling its Hard Candy cosmetics in Wal-Mart, well your girl just had to jump on it. I decided to try Hard Candy’s Lash Call Lengthening Mascara and see if it gives Urban Decay quality without the designer price tag. Did it deliver? Don’t be lazy, keep reading!

Hard Candy Lash Call
Lengthening mascara

Price: 5 out of 5 (I bought it for $6 at Wal-Mart. *High five* to all the frugalistas out there)
Packaging (Brush Wand): 4 out of 5
Overall: 4 out of 5

What it claims:
“Just one application of this rich mascara sends lashes to new lengths!”
The truth: It got me about 85% of the way before I had to call cab .
What I loved about it: I really adore the design of the wand. It’s thin so I don’t constantly poke my eye out. Oh, and along with being animal friendly, it’s got some pretty gorgeous body art.
What I didn’t like: It gives you length but not much volume. I like a little fluff!
Overall: I was intrigued by Hard Candy ads in magazines as a kid. It didn’t help that my mom tried to forbid me from wearing make-up until I was 17. Booooo! We see how well that worked, didn’t we? Anywho, I almost did 14 back-flips when I saw the Hard Candy display when grocery shopping. Being the avid fan of Urban Decay’s quality and answering the question, “Are those your real lashes?” I figured I would fall in love with this mascara. It did a good job but it wasn’t great.

The thin wand intrigued me the most.

I can not tell you how many times I’ve poked myself in the eyes or how many clumping issues bigger, more complex wands have given me. This mascara allows you to apply however many coats you want without all the extra fuss—but you’ll have to sacrifice a little fluff.

Trying to find a mascara that takes you to “new lengths” and gives you maximum volume is like trying to find a 4-leaf-clover (Go me for that nice St. Patty’s Day plug!). I love volume—when I’m in the car, I crank it up, when I do my hair, I tease it up and, when I dress my lashes, I like ‘em mega, honey!
Hard Candy claims the formula in this mascara is exclusive and I they must be on to something because it dries pretty quickly and is easy to clean up. Just don’t go see any tearjerkers while rocking these babies. Lash Call Lengthening Mascara comes in 6 fun colors to match your mood. This mascara will give you its all but it’s up to you what you decide to do with it. I liked it just fine!

Would I recommend it?: Yes ma’am. It gets the job done, especially if you’re on a budget or value having options.
[B's add-in: I wanna try! How insane is it that I can't find Hardy Candy anywhere? Asha and I live minutes away from each other and I am ca-learly in the wrong Wally World. Ugh!! Any Hard Candy fans?]
A crazed mascara reviewer,

Mascara Monday: Make Up For Ever Smoky Lash

Time for another review of a highly requested mascara. Out of nowhere, my inbox was slammed with a ton of emails about this mascara. Those of y’all that have tried it swore it was the best thing ever. Did I agree? Hmm…

Make Up For Ever Smoky Lash

Price: 2 out of 5 (I got it for $22 at Sephora)
Packaging (Brush Wand): 4 out of 5
Overall: 4 out of 5

What it claims:
“A mascara that gives the lashes curl, volume, length and intense pigment” (source)

The truth: It don’t do all of THAT but it’s a pretty good mascara.

What I loved about it: I reallllly like how black it is.

What I didn’t like: It tends to flake toward the end of the day. No me gusta!

Overall: I freakin’ love Make Up For Ever. I can’t deny it. Yeah, I know I complain about the price. But I’m always complaining about the price of something. That’s just the life of a cheaparina. LOL! I always feel ambivalent when I hit a check-out line with a luxury mascara. Is it worth the price? Will I fall in love and end up having to always spend a grip on it? Hmm…

Smoky Lash surprised me. I can totally see why so many of y’all love this Sephora exclusive mascara. Let’s talk about the wand.

It’s pretty cool. Not my favorite but it isn’t bad. It takes some work when trying to get in the inner corners. And it may give smaller lids and lashes ladies some issues. Tiny thin strokes is the key with a brush like that. I used the root-to-top wiggling method and it worked just fine.

Now don’t let the claims fool you. I don’t think ANY mascara can give you length, volume AND curl. If I am so desirous of all three, I find that layering is the best way to go. I think that this mascara is better with lengthening than anything else. The volume is so so but what really makes it stand out is the black pigment. It gives my lashes tons of drama. And that’s with one coat. One coat is where you should stay because two or more MAY give you some problems.

The biggest problem I had with Smoky Lash was the flakiness. It was pretty bad at one point. I always assume that flaky mascaras are because (1) the mascara is older or (2) I’ve applied too many coats. The latter was the case with Smoky Lash. Three coats=flakiness galore, one coat=a bit of flakiness but not too bad.

Otherwise, it’s a pretty good mascara. Go MUFE!!!

Would I recommend it?: Sure would…it’s a nice mascara if you feel like splurging!

Go MUFE, it’s ya birthday!!! Who likes?

A crazed mascara reviewer,

Mascara Monday: Maybelline XXL Pro Volume

Good ole’ Maybelline has graced us with not one, not two but FOUR new mascaras under the XXL Pro by EyeStudio line. Now if you know anything about Maybelline mascaras, you may remember the original XXL mascaras. I’ve reviewed the Volume and Lengthening before. Don’t quote me on this, but I think that the XXL Pro will replace the XXL mascaras. Aside from the colors, the packaging doesn’t change so it makes me wonder if the formulations have.
Of course the only way to figure this out is by reviewing them.

First up…volume!!

Maybelline XXL Pro Volume

Hit the jump to see if it rocks or rolls…into the garbage can, that is. ;)

Price: 5 out of 5
Packaging (Brush Wand): 3 out of 5
Overall: 3.5 out of 5

What it claims:
Per the packaging…

The truth: It’s aight…I don’t know about this microfiber thing. I didn’t experience any of that.

What I loved about it: Um, I couldn’t find anything to REALLY love about it.

What I didn’t like: I don’t feel like I got enough volume. Boo!

Overall: I always have high expectations for mascaras that claim to volumize. These mascaras excite me more than lengthening and curling mascaras. Volume=bigger and lusher lashes and that’s just so me! Maybelline XXL Pro Volume, like all of the XXL Pro mascaras, are dual ended.

You’ve got a primer on one end and the mascara on the other.

La Primer…

La Mascara…

I’m not the biggest fan of these wands. I mean…they aren’t bad but I wish they the bristles were a little further out. Now here’s the thing about the primer…although it goes on white, it disappears after applying the mascara.

I know, what you’re thinking, “What’s the point of this mascara? And does it really make a difference?” Truth is…it does! Watch this…

Lashes without mascara
(did not curl lashes)

Lashes with 3 coats of mascara

First the primer…

…and then viola!

Left eye: mascara WITH primer

Right eye: just mascara

Quite the difference, uh? So while it seems like an unnecessary step, the primer actually works. But I’m not all that impressed with the volume I got. Because I didn’t get much. Lengthening was good but come on…where’s the cream filling?
I also found this baby to be a tad bit flaky. Could it be because my lashes were coated too much? Maybe.
Ah well…I hope the other XXL Pro mascaras don’t let me down as much

Would I recommend it?: It’s not a must have. Snag it if it’s on sale.

Has anyone tried this mascara yet? Whatcha think?

Mascara Monday: Maybelline Lash Stiletto Voluptuous

So who remembers the original Lash Stiletto mascara? I do! I do! That’s because I loved it. I thought it was one of the greatest lengthening mascaras in 2009. A year later and now we have Lash Stiletto’s little sister….Lash Stiletto Voluptuous. Is it just as great? Or does it suck? Click the jump to get the stats!

Maybelline Lash Stiletto Voluptuous

Price: 3 out of 5
Packaging (Brush Wand): 4 out of 5
Overall: 3 out of 5

What it claims:
Per the packaging…

The truth: Meh… I’m confused. What is it supposed to do?

What I loved about it: I got a good amount of length!

What I didn’t like: I didn’t get any volume and it was a little too clumpy for my liking.

Overall: Well, well well…where to start? First of all…I don’t even know what this mascara is supposed to do. The packaging was extremely vague. So I guess it’s going to give me “incredible length and volume”?? Gee…okay. I guess I’m so used to seeing mascaras with exaggerated claims that it seems strange to see one that doesn’t offer such. I assumed that with it being called “Voluptuous” that it was a volumizing mascara. It was expecting to see full and lush lashes. Negative.

Instead, what I got was length. Which wouldn’t have bothered me had the original Lash Stiletto NOT done that. Accompanying the length was clumps. Boo. Don’t let the website name full you. I’m not really a fan of clumps of mascara. LOL!

Now let’s talk about the wand….

It has what’s called the “plump and stretch brush”. It has a wav-y thing goin’ on and I’m not all that impressed by it really. It doesn’t make applying any easier. It most mimics the Lancome  Hypnose Drama wand but between you and me, I like Lancome’s better. The original Lash Stiletto wand was your average straight wand.

Despite the clumps, it was hard for me to give this mascara a really bad score. I did get A LOT of length. But I’m still disappointed because I wanted some volume. *pouts*

Would I recommend it?: I think you can pass. Unless you are really wanting to try out that the new plump and stretch brush. Other than that,  I don’t think it’s a must have.

Has anyone tried this mascara yet? Whatcha think?

Mascara Monday: Bare Escentuals Buxom Lash mascara

This was probably one of the most highly requested mascaras. And I am FINALLY getting to it. Is it worth the hype? Hmmm…

Bare Escentuals Buxom Lash mascara

Price: 3 out of 5 (I got it for $18 at Sephora)
Packaging (Brush Wand): 4 out of 5
Overall: 3 out of 5

What it claims:
“Bare Escentuals Buxom® Lash Mascara – Blackest Black holds the style of your lashes for a continuous 12 hours with no flakiness. The silky, vitamin-rich formula darkens, lengthens, and thickens from root to tip without ever clumping. Its patented, hourglass-shaped brush is designed to lift and separate every lash while delivering the perfect amount of antioxidant-rich mascara needed for bigger, fuller lashes. “ (source)

The truth:
*yawn* Oh wait….what were we talking about again?
What I loved about it: It’s a green mascara so it lacks:

- Parabens
- Sulfates
- Synthetic Fragrances
- Synthetic Dyes
- Phthalates

That’s pretty cool!

What I didn’t like: It claimed to be a volume mascara but I didn’t see much. That sucks.

Overall: This is one of those mascaras that took me almost a year to review. I’m not sure why. I received SO many requests to review it and just never got around to it. But here we are. I’m not all that impressed with Buxom. Like, at all…. First, let’s take a look at the wand.

This is what they call their hour glass buxom wand. As you can see, the middle of the wand sucks in and if you hold it vertically, it indeed looks like an hourglass. I mentioned in the video that I didn’t see the big deal in this but I guess it’s one of those things that companies like to do to make their wands appear “more unique”. Um yeah…whatever works.

It’s not a bad wand though. The bristles are long enough to effectively grab the lashes so they get an A+ in that area. It does, though, make for tough application in the inner lashes. The end of the wand is rounded and well..it is really hard to get in the corners.

As I mentioned earlier, I didn’t get much volume out of this mascara. The lengthening bit was okay but I wasn’t THAT impressed. Perhaps the best thing about this mascara is the fact that it is build-able. And it really doesn’t clump no matter how many coats you apply. But even that was enough to appease me. I needed more length and at least SOME volume.

Lashes without mascara
(did not curl lashes)

Lashes with 3 coats of mascara

Okay, here’s a far away shot.

The lashes still look a puny to me. Boo!

I can appreciate that a little booklet thingie comes with the mascara though.

It gives neat tricks of how to apply the mascara with their special wand. Nothing that us veteran mascara users don’t know though.

Would I recommend it?: Nope. It’s pretty average and for $18, I think there are better out there.

Until next time…..

Mascara Monday News! *giveaway*

I am SO excited about Clumps’ new website! Mascara review navigation will be so much easier.

But anyway, back to the topic at hand. Here is a quick heads up letting y’all know that for the next 6 weeks, I will be reviewing the following mascaras:

Bare Escentuals Buxom Lash
Maybelline XXL 24HR Bold Intense
Maybelline XXL Curl Recourber
Maybelline XXL Pro Extensions
Maybelline XXL Volume
Maybelline Lash Stiletto Voluptous

The requests I have been getting to review Maybelline’s newest have been blowing up my inbox. So unless otherwise stated, I’ll be cranking out those reviews. But I’ll need your help. In the left of the website, you’ll see a little poll. It looks like this…

Vote and let me know which one I should review first. I don’t even know where to start.

Also, I accidentally picked up Maybelline’s Lash Stiletto Voluptous in brown. Any brown mascara wearers out there? If you want it, leave your email address in the comment section and I’ll choose someone by Thursday, January 21, 2010 at midnight. Winner will be selected at random and International ladies are free to jump in!

Ciao!

Mascara Monday: Neutrogena Healthy Length mascara

Yay to the first mascara review of 2010! I had a wonderful experience with Neutrogena’s Healthy Volume mascara back in the day. Is Healthy Length just as good?

Hmm…..

Neutrogena Healthy Length mascara

Price: 5 out of 5 (I got it for $7.99 at Ulta)
Packaging (Brush Wand): 5 out of 5
Overall: 4 out of 5

What it claims: “This breakthrough formula with rice protein instantly extends lashes, while nourishing and strengthening lashes to allow them to grow to their fullest potential.” (per packaging)

The truth:
Hmm….not bad.

What I loved about it: This mascara uses what’s called the “Clean Lash Brush”. Per the packaging it “provides a smooth, clump-free application by combing through lashes from root to tip, for outstanding definition and beautiful length”. I don’t know about all of that but it was great with separating my wonky lashes.

And I don’t know if it’s a defect or not but my wand has a gangsta lean to it. I kinda like it though. It makes applying easier.

What I didn’t like: It does flake a bit which is no bueno for contact wearers.

Overall: Well, Neutrogena has won my heart again! They simply come out with really good mascaras. And it’s so unexpected because when you think of mascara brands, you don’t necessarily think of Neutrogena. Let’s talk about the GREATs of this mascara.

It’s build-able: Some people really desire this in a mascara. While it’s not a must for me, I can appreciate the mascara that is such. Healthy Length will look just fine with one coat and it looks even better with 4 coats. Thanks to the great wand, you won’t experience any clumping.

It’s soft: This mascara just doesn’t feel heavy on the lashes. I love that! In fact, it almost feels like your natural lashes.

The packaging ain’t lyin': Look at this…

Isn’t that grand? I’ve seen SO many mascaras that claim to give you 100x your natural length. LOL…or 80% longer lashes. WTF does that mean? I don’t know. But thank you Neutrogena for keepin’ it real.

This baby did tend to flake a bit but I didn’t notice this until the end of the day and it wasn’t so bothersome that I had to remove it.

Lashes without mascara
(curled lashes)

Lashes with 2 coats of mascara

Not bad at all!

Would I recommend it?: I would. My lashes got great length and if you’re in the market for a new lengthening mascara, this one isn’t so bad.

Until next time…..
