Mascara Monday: Myrabelle Mascara Shield

Happy Monday, family! And Happy Memorial Day. Memorial Day is an American holiday that honors our fallen soldiers. Take a moment out of your day to reflect and remember those soldiers who risked their lives for all of us. Now if that ain’t beauty, I don’t know what is.

I have been thinking about expanding Mascara Monday. Instead of seeing mascara reviews EVERY Monday, you can expect mascara discussions, tools of the trade and any other randomness we (of course I’ll need your contributions and recommendations!) come across.

Also, if you are a fellow blogger that has featured some of the same mascaras that I have featured, I will gladly link you!

On to the review!

Myrabelle Mascara Shield

Price: 3 out of 5 ($10 online. It was $5 at The Makeup Show NYC)
Packaging (Brush Wand): N/A
Overall: 4 out of 5

What it claims: “This non-toxic plastic device placed under the top or bottom eyelashes ensures the uniform application of mascara without disturbing other make-up or marking the skin. It brings into relief thin or sparse eyelashes making them easier to see. For thick and long lashes, mascara application goes on more smoothly and evenly.

The Myrabelle Mascara Shield can be used in the same way for eyelash tinting & applying individual false eyelashes.” (source)

The truth:
I haven’t seen anything else like this before so I can’t compare it to another brand. It takes some time getting used to it but it is very effective.

What I loved about it: It allows you to really get to the roots of your lashes. Which means….more length!

What I didn’t like: It isn’t all that comfortable and made my eyes water after awhile. But I think that’s just because my eyes are used to buggin‘ out like that. Ha!

Overall: This is one of those products where you are like, “OMG, why didn’t I think of this?” It is very innovative and I find it to be really really useful. This is great for those of us out there who have a hard time applying mascara without getting the residue on the lid. Even I have this issue! And it becomes extremely frustrated when you have already applied a ton of eyeshadow. Yikes! The mascara shield prevents this from happening.

Got shaky hands? I find that this gives you more control. Especially for the lower lashes–which by the way, I never apply mascara to. And the reason why I don’t is because I always end up getting it all over the place. The shield helps with that!

And what I REALLY love about it is that it allows you to get to the root of your lashes. This is almost impossible to do with a mascara wand. I mean…you can try, but honey….I’m too afraid that I would poke myself in the eye. Ha!

Some shots of the Mascara Shield in action…

Okay, now I’m just being silly. HA!

Would I recommend it?: I would! I think it’s a great little investment. Especially for serious mascara wearers out there.

Yep, I even did a video review of it….

A crazed mascara reviewer,

Mascara Monday: L’Oreal Bare Naturale mascara

Happy happy Monday! And I hope all of the Mothers out there had a wonderful Mother’s Day! I spent mine in Miami Beach visiting my parental Grandmother. Remember when I talked about her here? Oh yes….she is a remarkable woman. As are all of the women in my life. And check out the view from the Eden Roc hotel…

We treated Grandma to a little vacay in her own city and she loved it. As did I! Miami is my original hometown and yet I had never been to Miami Beach. Wow! I most certainly will be back.

Time for another mascara review….

L’Oreal Bare Naturale mascara

Price: 3 out of 5 (I got this for $7.99 at Walgreens)
Packaging (Brush Wand): 3 out of 5
Overall: 4 out of 5

What it claims: “…the first mineral-enriched mascara from L’Oréal’s Bare Naturale. This innovative formula contains 86% natural-origin ingredients, shine-enhancing minerals and is both paraben- and fiber-free. It provides your lashes with flawless volume and length, with a weightless feel that is absolutely clump-free. The brush is made with naturally-based soft bristles that delicately brush through lashes without tugging. Your lashes will look positively flawless and feel fresh and weightless all day long.” (source)

The truth:
Not bad. I mean…for some reasons my expectations were low but this mascara delievered.

What I loved about it: You do get a nice natural look with this mascara. I have always been desirous of crazy volumized lashes but I really like this one.

What I didn’t like: The wand’s bristles weren’t as defined as I like them. Boo.

Overall: I like the idea behind this mascara. At first glance of the word “naturale” you may be like me and assume that the mascara is supposed to give you “natural looking” lashes. No ma’am….the “naturale” comes from what is in–or not in–the mascara. This mineral enriched fragrance-free, paraben-free, fiber-free mascara is formulated with jojoba oil, aloe and Vitamin E. It lacks a great deal of the harsh chemicals that some mascaras tend to have. The fact that its performance is still pretty decent….says a lot!

Now it’s not OMG-totally freakin’ awesome. I would have liked a tad bit more volume and length. But overall, it did a pretty good job. I can see my Mom with a mascara like this. It gives you enough length or volume without going overboard.

Would I recommend it?: Sure. I’m impressed. And I am quite the advocate for being a little more “green” in the beauty world. This mascara is certainly a better step in the right direction.

Mascara Monday: L’Oreal Extra Volume Collagen mascara

Happy happy Monday! As always….I have another mascara review! This happens to be L’Oreal’s newest. I received a total of 9 requests for this mascara.

Do we have another L’Oreal Voluminous winner?

Check the review…..

L’Oreal Extra Volume
Collagen mascara

Price: 3 out of 5 (I got this for $9.99 at Walgreens but you get can it from Target for $6.49)
Packaging (Brush Wand): 4 out of 5
Overall: 3 out of 5

What it claims: Opps…I threw the packaging away! *cries* And we all know how well these drugst0re brands are at updating their sites. NOT!

The truth:
I mean….it’s okay. Just average. Nothing spectacular.

What I loved about it: I liked the wand…easy to use with minimal excess mascara on the brush.

What I didn’t like: It didn’t give me enough volume. I mean…it was just mediocre.

Overall: Okay…so basically this mascara is supposed to use collagen technology to plump your lashes up 12x their natural volume. 12x is a little dramatic but aren’t all mascara claims? To be honest….this mascara didn’t really impress me. Granted I wasn’t completely turned off by it but it didn’t make me want to throw a party either. It is an average mascara with no spectacular results.

Would I recommend it?: Not really. I think that there are other great mascaras out there. I would only snag this one if it was on sale.

*yawn* See how excited I am about this baby? Peep the video review:

Has anyone tried this mascara yet? Am I the only one missing the spark or is it really just average? What say you?

A crazed mascara reviewer,

Mascara Monday: Revlon DoubleTwist Volumizing mascara

It’s Monday again! Which means it is time for another mascara review. Are yall sick of these yet? For some reason I don’t get tired reviewing them. Ain’t that somethin’? Continue reading to see what I thought about Revlon’s newest mascara.

Revlon DoubleTwist mascara

Price: 4 out of 5 (I got this for $8.99 at Walgreens )
Packaging (Brush Wand): 1 out of 5
Overall: 2 out of 5

What it claims: “Revolutionary brush combines traditional bristles with innovative defining bristles for luscious volume and remarkable definition.” (per packaging)

The truth:
Revolutionary brush, my foot. Using this wand was a nightmare. Which is funny because at initial glance it looks fairly harmless.

What I loved about it: Kudos to Revlon for being unique in coming up with a wand that has traditional bristles AND the 3D bristles. The idea sounds cool enough.

What I didn’t like: This needs only few words.

Overall: This is a huge FAIL as far as mascaras go. It has a great deal of elements that make mascaras bad.

-Difficult to use
-Clump-a-licious
-Wand is too big to control
-Formula makes lashes hard

I mean, honestly, Revlon…..what were yall thinking? First of all, while the wand does look pretty cool, it doesn’t make much sense. Unless you “twirl” the wand, you won’t benefit using both the “revolutionary brush” or “innovative defining bristles” in one application. I suppose you could apply one coat using the brush and then another coat with the bristles. That would work.

IF the wand was not so coated with icky mascara. I found that I picked up A LOT of product just from pull of the wand. And what a mess it was. The hole to the mascara wand is enormous so it makes sense as to why you end up pulling out a lot of product. Seriously, this hole is like bigger than the drain in my bathtub.

So aside from this heavily coating the mascara, you are also wasting a great deal of the mascara itself. Just look how much mascara is on this baby!

And the clumps speak for themselves.

Lashes without mascara
(did not curl lashes)

Lashes with 2 coats of mascara

Would I recommend it?: Of course, as with any AWFUL mascara performance, I have to consider than maybe I purchased a bad tube. Which could have been the case. Or maybe it just really sucked. Either way….I ain’t purchasing this one again. And if you have smaller lids/lashes….don’t even think about it!

Really want to see how clump-a-licious this mascara is? Check out the video review. It’s shocking!

What do you think? Did I just get a crappy tube or does Revlon usually have crap-tastic mascaras? What say you?

Enjoy your Monday!!

A crazed mascara reviewer,

[EDIT]Clumps of Mascara readers are on it! Reader Lauryn has alerted me that this mascara is on sale at Walgreens for $6.99. Interested in trying it? Now is the time! Sale ends Saturday, May 2, 2009.

Mascara Monday: L’Oreal Voluminous mascara

Happy happy Monday! This Mascara Monday almost didn’t make it. I spent the weekend back home with friends and family which means good food, too much fun and sleep-less nights from having too much fun. Sleep deprivation has hit me hard but alas beauty news must go on!

Now this is one mascara that I have previously owned but never reviewed for Mascara Mondays. Once upon a time, I had major tude with this mascara. Has it since wow-ed me or do I still want to fight it in the streets? Peep the review!

L’Oreal Voluminous mascara

Price: 5 out of 5 (I got this for $3.99 at Target. Steal, baby!! )
Packaging (Brush Wand): 3 out of 5
Overall: 5 out of 5

What it claims: “Uniquely formulated to resist clumping, soften lashes, and build lashes to five times their natural thickness. Patented Volume maximizing brush thickens lashes evenly and smoothly, leaving them soft with virtually no flakes, smudges or clumps. Exclusive carbon black pigments provide up to 2x the intensity of classic L’Oreal shade.” (source)

The truth:
Dear Max Factor Volume Couture, I love you and all but I think that someone else may just take your place. Don’t take it personal. It’s a lashes thing. Always, B.

What I loved about it: OMG WTF! Is what I first said when I saw the volume that this mascara gave me. So yes….it’s the volume that I love.

What I didn’t like:
The wand. Perhaps it could have been a little smaller? And thinner. Um yeah…this wand needs to go on a bit of a diet.

Overall: Wow! So first things first….if you have ever played around with a mascara and found that it just didn’t work well for you, try it again a few months later. Or even a year later. I HATED L’Oreal Voluminous when I first tried it. Granted I wasn’t as knowledgeable about mascaras then as I am now but I literally talked trash about this mascara to every one I knew. For me, I found that it transported me right to Clump City. But I get it now….

….to really get the BEST out of this mascara, use only two coats. More than that and you may find yourself in some trouble.

Because it coats your lashes somethin’ serious, you may endure smudging and smearing if you constantly rub your eyes. The waterproof version of Voluminous fixes that problem. If you are really looking for dark and dramatic lashes, this mascara has yo back, sis.

Lashes with 2 coats of mascara

It really is great stuff. It is easy to find and has different formulations (waterproof, carbon black, etc).

Would I recommend it?: Absolutely!! I would recommend this to any and everyone that is seeking insane volume!

Mascara Monday: Max Factor Vivid Impact mascara

Happy Monday! If you celebrate it, I hope that you all had a wonderful Resurrection Sunday! The dawn of Easter always REALLY reminds me that it is Spring time. And the weather here in Central Florida says just that.

Thank you ALL for your support and involvement in Clumps of Mascara’s Reader Appreciation Week. I know everyone couldn’t win something but it was exciting to see all of the entries and overall excitement in the giveaways. Yay!!

This mascara is one that has been requested several times. And I am just now getting to it. Yikes!! This post will be picture heavy because I wanted to show each detail of this groovy mascara. Is it really vivid or a bust?

Max Factor Vivid Impact mascara
(blue & pink)

Price: 4 out of 5 ($10 from Ulta.com )
Packaging (Brush Wand): 4 out of 5
Overall: 4 out of 5

What it claims: “Dual color mascara that combines a traditional solid color base coat with an iridescent highlighting top coat to add a hint of color to lashes. Delivers sophisticated, bold and unexpected eye looks.(source)

The truth:
Pink lashes? That’s unexpected alright!!

What I loved about it: I love the versatility of this mascara. You can create many different looks. Whether it be the pink highlighting top coat just on the tips, all over, or just on the lower lashes. Such fun!

What I didn’t like:
For whatever reason, the mascara was a bit hard on the lashes.I mean….harder than most mascaras.

Overall: If you are lookin‘ for a mascara that will give you a “different” look or add a pop of color, this is it! I had so much fun playing around with mascara. I mean, think about it….pink lashes? How fun is that? As far as the performance of the mascara, I found that the blue basecoat gave me good volume. I’m talkinMax Factor Volume Couture-kinda volume.

The pink highlighting top coat, however, isn’t the same consistency as the mascara. It is a little thinner than a creamy eyeshadow. It takes quite a few strokes to get the color ON the lashes. And even then…it may appear a little streaky at first. I would imagine the color would really POP on lighter lashes but since my babies are dark brown….it is a little hard to see the pink.

Check out the wands:

The defining basecoat

The highlighting topcoat

Lashes without mascara
(did not curl lashes)

Lashes with 2 coats of mascara

First, I am applying two coats of the defining basecoat in blue. You can hardly tell that it’s there, uh? But I do get a good amount of volume and length.

Next I applied the pink highlighting top coat with the tip of the wand.

You can see the pink up close and personal. But what about outside?

So it really does work. I love how it looks with a purple eyeliner. Reader Sabrina was really the inspiration behind me finally purchasing and reviewing this mascara. Look at how beautiful the gold mascara looks with her pretty blue eyes!

Hotness!!

Would I recommend it?: Everyone should have one of these babies in their mascara stash. Fun-kaaaay!! Speaking of “funky”….count how many times I use that word in the video review. It’s pretty funny.

Mascara Monday: Rimmel Sexy Curves mascara

Happy Monday, family! I hope that you all had spectacular weekends! I would like to thank you all again for your support of Amor de Lacquer week. I thought it was a huge success? What do you think? I’d love to get your feeedback on the poll on the main page of the blog.

And for those of yall that were irritated with the non-stop talk of all things nails….your time is coming up! Want to see a week worth of mascara talk? All things blushes? Hair? Lips? Or eyes? Let me know at Brittany@ClumpsOfMascara.com.

OH….and I tell you that there is an official archive for ALL of the mascaras that I have reviewed? The MASCARA BIN tab is also on the main page of Clumps. All mascara reviews will end up there and per the request of readers, I have organized it by rating.

Where will Rimmel Sexy Curves end up? Hmmmm…..

Rimmel Sexy Curves mascara

Price: 5 out of 5 (around $7 from Wal-greens )
Packaging (Brush Wand): 4 out of 5
Overall: 4 out of 5

What it claims: “Lashes look up to 70% curlier with voluptous volume(per packaging)

The truth:
Volume? Not so much. Curl? Okay…..not too bad.

What I loved about it:
Despite it looking a little strange, I actually really like the brush.

What I didn’t like:
Grrr, it didn’t give me the dramatic level of volume I was looking for. I know that most curling mascaras don’t provide a good amount of volume but this one said that it would so….*pouts*…I’m sad.

Overall: If I could give an award to the “Most Passed By Mascara”, I would give it to Rimmel’s Sexy Curves. I have been eye-ing this mascara for months! But for some reason….I never bit the bullet and gave it a try. Until now.

First, let’s talk about the wand.

Rimmel calls this their “triple plump brush” and that it “curves in for volume and curves out for maximum curl.” Um. Okay. I’m not sure what that means and they don’t exactly provide directions for it so I used this wand the same way I would use any other.

Well…I like it! It makes for decent application with minimal strain. I don’t really understand WHY it is made that way but it doesn’t give me any problems, so a sista ain’t complainin’!

In terms of the mascara’s performance….it’ s good! It gave me A LOT of curl. I found that by bringing the lashes up from root to tip and holding it for a few seconds, I got a better hold. Sometimes I feel like curling mascaras should have some kind of spritz in them–just so that they can hold that curl. Not sure how eye-safe that would be but it’s a thought, hmmmm?

So yes, Sexy Curves gave me that curl. It didn’t hold up as much as I would have liked it but such is the case with most curling mascaras. To get the maximum amount of curl I would suggest curling your lashes with an eyelash curler prior to application.

Lashes without mascara
(DID curl lashes)

Lashes with 2 coats of mascara

Would I recommend it?: Sure. But only if you are okay with curling your lashes first. However, if you have bone straight lashes and eyelash curlers don’t work too well for you, this mascara may not work.

Have you tried this mascara yet? What do you think?

I have also reviewed Rimmel’s Glam Eyes mascara.

Mascara Monday: Lash Control-Volume

Happy happy Monday, family! Mascara Monday took a little break last week but we are up and running again and excited to bring you another mascara review.

Here is a brand that focuses strictly on mascara. I was able to meet with Jennifer from Lash Control at The Makeup Show LA and I had a wonderful time chit-chatting with her about all things mascaras. Of course I had to try one of the mascaras from Lash Control. I chose the lady in purple who represents volume.

Soooo….did it work?

Lash Control-Volume

Price: 2 out of 5 ($20 a little steep for the average mascara)
Packaging (Brush Wand): 5 out of 5
Overall: 4.5 out of 5
Bold
What it claims: “The mascara comes with a fitted, snap-down vinyl “baggie” for added protection inside your make-up bag. The extra inch of distance provided by the flexible wiper offers another barrier to air and foreign particle contact with the formula which make the mascara perform better and for a longer period of time.(source)

The truth: Wow! The squeezable tube is pretty cool. No more globs of mascara coming out of the tube.

What I loved about it:
I love the wand. It makes mascara application easy and effortless.

I also liked how weightless two coats of mascara felt on my lashes.

What I didn’t like:
I wish I would have achieved a little more volume.

Overall: Lash Control is a mascara brand that has mascaras specifically for certain needs. Need a waterproof mascara? They have it. Desire curl? They got you covered? Seeking length? Look no futher. I am glad to see a mascara company that tries to cover all of the issues that we have with mascara application and performance. The “flexible wiper sleeve” is incredibly useful.

In the past, I have gotten so irritated with mascara wands that pull out TOO much mascara. You end up having to wipe it along the edges of the mascara tube or wipe it on a tissue. Both actions are unsanitary so in a sense this mascara is helping you keep the germs at bay as well as allowing your mascara to last a little longer.

The idea is ingenious and it works flawlessly.

As far as the mascara, I wished that I got a little more volume. Just a tad bit more. But I won’t complain too much because what I got after only two coats is absolutely beautiful!

Would I recommend it?: Absolutely. It is innovative and it works!

What do you think? Would you like to try this mascara? How cool is the squeezy-middle? I love it! You can get this mascara and more at the Lash Control website.

Enjoy your Monday, family!
