Amor de Lacquer: Orly’s Metal Chic Metallic Matte collection

Welcome to another post of Amor de Lacquer….the series all about nail polish and nail care! Send me your requests, suggestions and ideas to Brittany@ClumpsOfMascara.com.

Okay, so can I do one more matte nail polish review? Pretty please? I really think you’ll like this one. And I promise it will be the last for a while. I don’t know if the trend is over or not but who cares? Orly has swept me away again. Check THIS out…

Glam Rock is a cool lookin’ cooper that is a little warmer than a penny. I love the way it looks matte. For some reason, I don’t think colors like this compliment my complexion when they are all shiny.

Iron Butterfly is another velvet-ty matte black. We’ve seen this before from Zoya’s Dovima. Iron Butterfly has more silver which makes it unique. And I love that name…Iron Butterfly. Hot!

Solid Gold is a matte gold. WOW! I’ve never been a fan of golds on my warm skin but this works!

Oh, Orly….how I love thee. I thought you stole my heart with your first matte collection. But nope…this one definitely trumps the predecessor. The consistency of these polishes remind me of Zoya’s Velvets and OPI’s Suedes. Think smooth and…velvet-y. Tiny silver specks give the “metallic” affect.

These polishes were a little thick and didn’t leave me wanting to apply a third coat. Not that I needed to as two coats seemed to be just fine.

I used two coats for each and didn’t have any application problems although Glam Rock did have some streaky issues.

Buy these and more for $3.19/bottle at TransDesign or anywhere Orly polishes are sold.

Are you sick of the matte trend yet?

Degree Sponsored SAG awards party

So guess who had a Degree sponsored Screen Actor’s Guild award show party? Clumps of Mascara did! And we had a ball! Guests walked in to a display table of goodies….

It was later decorated with tons of door prizes. I so forgot to take a picture of that though. As ladies t
rickled in, they made their way to the manicure table.

That’s right…Serendity Day Spa came to us and treated us to wonderful fabulous manicures. And uh, wha? Do we see one of my favorite nail polish brands?

Yep! They love Zoya just as much as I do.

The ladies gave the best hand/arm massages ever! We talked beauty stuffs before the SAG awards but before we knew it, celebs were walking the red carpet and we all headed over to see the fabulous dresses and suits.

Now I only watch one current show on TV. And that’s Glee. I was pretty much the only person shrieking when I saw Mark Salling as Puck hit the screen.

Like OMG, he is soooo dreamy! And as far as our favorite dresses and make-up looks…

Diane Kruger and her orange dress…

I love love loooove this color and the style of this dress. And she’s sporting a red lip with it? We loved it! And Monique, who won an award, looked fab too.

It’s not the most colorful dress in the world but we loved her hair and make-up. Is that a Sam Fine job? After more screaming over who was hot and who was not, it was time for the big deal giveaway. A $100 gift card to Macy’s. Everyone put their name in a hat…

Except me. Because, you know….that wouldn’t be fair. LOL!

Our 9-year old name puller selected none other than Meagan from Lipstick Mixtapes. Look at her…getting her nails done all innocently.

Little did we know that she would strategically place her name in the hat so that it would be pulled. Yeah…we were hatin’. But leave it to sugary cake therapy to make us feel better.

Too bad we were too tired to play Taboo after the awards show. Ah well…maybe next Saturday!

And as far as at Degree’s Ultra Clear Satin? Loves iiiit!

Disclaimer: Degree sponsored this event in that I was provided a gift card to purchase necessities for the party. We were sent movies, their new Ultra Clear Red Satin deodorant, a Macy’s gift card to raffle and manicures by Serendipity Day Spa. I organized the event but was not paid to write this post. Amor de Lacquer: Orly’s Mattes

Welcome to another post of Amor de Lacquer….the series all about nail polish and nail care! Send me your requests, suggestions and ideas to Brittany@ClumpsOfMascara.com.

That’s right…more mattes! But before you roll your eyes and tell me you can’t get down with the matte look, check out Orly’s! Their finish reminds me so much of Nubar’s and Zoya’s. They have that velvet-y thing goin’ on that a lot of anti-matte folx can get down with. Watch this…..

Blue Suede

WOW! I mean….wow. I probably should have thrown a top coat over this baby just to see what it would look like. But I was too busy loving its matte-ness. What a stunning blue. I don’t have any blues like this in my collection. I think this is a definite must-have. Even if you don’t like mattes, you can always throw a top coat over it and rock it like normal. Love. It!

Matte Vinyl

This just may be my favorite matte blacks. The application was phenomenal and the intensity of the black was dead one. It wasn’t the least bit streaky.

Purple Velvet

What a fabulous purple! Y’all know my heart beats for purple polishes and this one does not let me down.

Wow…I mean wow, Orly. I will always be a fan of Orly for their rubberized handle. This just makes all to much sense for nail techs and regular polish polishers alike. Application of these mattes were great. I didn’t experience any streakiness and I got good opaque coverage in only one coat. I went ahead with two coats for each just because that’s what I’m used to.

You can get them for $3.19 each at TransDesign.com or at any Orly retailer like Sally’s Beauty Supply.

Are these not the best things ever or what?

Your fellow nail polish junkie,

Amor de Lacquer: Nubar’s Fall 2009 Modern Matte collection

Welcome to another post of Amor de Lacquer….the series all about nail polish and nail care! Send me your requests, suggestions and ideas to Brittany@ClumpsOfMascara.com.

Yesssss, more mattes. Am I loving this trend or what? I am having a ball reviewing collections from different brands. Everyone’s mattes are different and I have yet run into one that I didn’t like.

Nubar baby!!

You’ve seen me review Nubar before. Remember the Going Green collection? I am STILL in love with that Reclaim. Seriously the best green holo ever. Anywhoovers….let’s check out their mattes.

Prevail is one of those colors that you don’t see everyday. It’s very interesting. Like a dirty eggplant. Doesn’t look too matte-y though. Which is fine with me because it’s a funky and unique color anyway.

Oh wow….now I can get down with this. Contempo would be pretty boring if it wasn’t a matte. But since it is, it kinda rocks. It’s like a pearlized velvety tomato. I love it!

Vital is cool. Nothing spectacular. I didn’t think about it then but it would probably be insane with a glittery topcoat.

How ’bout Avant-Garde or Avant-Gorg! I love the way this baby pops on my skin.

Nubar’s mattes remind me a lot of Zoya’s mattes. They’ve got that velvet-y thing goin’ on. I’ve learned to appreciate mattes like this. They aren’t super super matte but are shiny enough to appease even the most anti-matte chica.

My only issues with these is that they are a bit of struggle to remove. And yes, like most mattes—you’ll see chipping after a day or so. But I love ’em so much that I don’t even care.

You can snag these darlings here. Only $25 for the entire set. Not bad at ‘tal!

Whatcha think?

Your fellow nail polish junkie,

Amor de Lacquer: Konad Nail Art 101

Welcome to another post of Amor de Lacquer….the series all about nail polish and nail care! Send me your requests, suggestions and ideas to Brittany@ClumpsOfMascara.com.

Lemme tell ya, kids….konading is one thing. Taking pictures of konading AND doing a video on konading is a whole ‘nother chore. But I had to do it after receiving so many requests from my YouTube fam.

If you follow me on Twitter you know that on most weekends I tweet what I call my “Weekend manicures”. These looks are usually outrageous, not safe for work and all around fun.

Last week I tweeted this…

This was my first REAL deal Konad. I’ve had the system for months but it wasn’t until last weekend when I really went crazy with it.

What is Konad?
Simply put—a nail art system. I remember seeing these things in the mall when I was in middle/high school and thought they were super lame. I always thought they were for little girls who wanted to play “Let’s go to the nail salon”. Don’t know what I was thinking. Konading is a heap of fun. But is it easy to do?

Not for newbies….i.e. me. It’s a process really.

First you have to get the kit. This includes some nail art plates, a stamper and scraper. I purchased mine at a kiosk in an outlet but you can also get them from websites like this one and this one.

Then you polish your nails. With any polish. I chose Diamond Cosmetics’ mattes. OMG, these are incredible–review coming soon.

Let the nails dry and apply a polish over a nail design on one of the Konad plates. Like so….

Use the scrapper to remove polish from the outside perimeter of the plate.

Take your stamper and stamp! The design transfers from the plate to the stamper.

This is the tricky part. The part that I ALWAYS screw up on…….transferring the design to the nail. My nail beds are wide and long. These designs never really cover my entire nail. Not even my pinky!

A few minutes later and I’ve done the entire hand….

Konading is still a challenge for me. Stamping my middle fingers is a nightmare. I end up having to stamp twice and then the designs overlap and it’s not as fancy and neat as the other nails. In my experience, Konad works well with all of the nail polishes I have used. The white polish is a “Konad Special polish” but I have also used a China Glaze, Essie and Zoya with no problem.

I did a video too! OMG, it took me forever, y’all…..LOL!

What do you think? Into Konading? Wanna try?

Amor de Lacquer: MAC Nail Trend FW09 by Jin Soon

Welcome to another post of Amor de Lacquer….the series all about nail polish and nail care! Send me your requests, suggestions and ideas to Brittany@ClumpsOfMascara.com.

Hey peeps! So I did an impromptu poll of nail polishes collections I should review next. And guess who won?

Mickity mickity MAC!

I’m so lame….lol.

But really…it’s been awhile since I’ve played around with MAC Cosmetics. It’s not that I don’t love them anymore. I just enjoy exploring other brands. Namely the cheaper *cough* brands. Jin Soon for MAC had me swooning when I first saw the swatches at All Lacquered Up (hey Michelle!). She gave the collection some serious justice. But I felt compelled to only snag three polishes. For Fun, Dance All Around and Dark, Rich, Delicious seemed to be pretty dupe-able.

Check out my trio!

Cool Reserve is described as a dirty grey lavender. It is quite reminiscent of Zoya’s Malia. Malia is a little darker though. I have a weak spot for purples…especially lilacs.

Beyond Jealous is described as a blackened blue green. Ohhh weee, it does my heart content. I wish it was more green than black though. In the bottle in daylight it looks dark green.

And even on the nails it looks green-y.

But without a flash….

Black! It’s fiyah nonethless.

Dry Martini is described as a khaki olive green. I knew right off the bat that I wasn’t really going to like it on my nails. But I wanted to get it anyway. I love funky colors like this–even if I don’t think they compliment my nails well. Dry Martini kinda looks like mud on my nails but somehow…I like it.

But then the weekend hit and I had to top it off with yellow polka dots.

I only have two other MAC nail polishes. And I don’t remember them being this impeccable. They dry REALLY quickly. I applied two coats with each and by the time I was done with each hand, the other was already dry. One time for MAC!

Buy these and more for $12/bottle at MACCosmetics.com.

Diggin’ em? Passin’ em on by? Whatcha think?

Amor de Lacquer: Orly’s Once Upon A Time, Fall 2009

Welcome to another post of Amor de Lacquer….the series all about nail polish and nail care! Send me your requests, suggestions and ideas to Brittany@ClumpsOfMascara.com.

Fall collections are a coming!! I’m excited to see what kind of goodies my favorite nail polish brands are coming out with.
I’ve been a fan of Orly for quite some time. How can you not love a nail polish company that has a rubberized handle? This is great for professional nail techs as well as regular ole’ gals who obsessively polish their nails every day. I played around with Orly a lot this summer. See some of the beautiful spring-y colors I hauled?

I was even inspired to do funky designs!
Follow me on a Once Upon A Time fairy tale.
Introducing some of our characters….

Enchanted Forest

Now what’s a fairy tale without an enchanted forest? Not any enchanted forest will do. This forest has to be rich of dark and creamy green-y goodness. It must be opaque in only 2 coats. And it must be a cream.

Poison Apple

How can something so poisonous look so beautiful? It makes me question if it is indeed….poisonous. Well, if you swallow it–it is. If you apply two coats on your nails, however, you will find yourself captivated by the beauty that is a….how can I say it? A “sho nuff red”. This is the ultimate red. The kind of red polish that I couldn’t wear as a little girl. The kind of red polish that every lady needs in her stash.

Pixie Dust

After we’ve dodged the wicked witch and her poison apple, it’s only right that we come across fairies that sprinkle our locks with pixie dust. What’s left of the mix is thrown in a bottle and used as nail polish! This pixie dust looks like Zoya’s Harley and OPI’s Sheer Your Toys had a little baby. And this is what they produced. With micro silver glitter making a tiny yet memorable appearance, Pixie Dust is…..a must.

What a fun collection, Orly!! I have since removed the darling little jewels and put them on a keyring. I love them! I had no issues with applications. Enchanted Forest was a little thick but nothing that made me want to cry. I have some more hauling to do of the rest of this collection. There are 3 other characters just calling my name. Especially that Prince Charming. This collection will be available September 2009 for $7.50. My best spot for grabbing Orly polishes is at Sally Beauty. They have crazy deals on them at times. And so does Ulta!
Are you an Orly fan?

Your fellow nail polish junkie,

FOTD Friday: Tarte Cosmetics in the house!

Happy happy Friday, sweets!
As promised I am shootin’ you another FOTD from my Tarte Femme Fatale palette.

Hopefully you had a chance to indulge in Tarte’s 40% off sale. This palette is full of shimmery goodness that works well for daytime and nighttime looks.
The colors were pigmented and while I did endure some fall-out I found that I was able to create a toooon of looks with the palette. Including a pretty wearable work-appropriate smokey eye.
[NOTE] Now my skin is going through some things because I am on some new treatments per my dermatologist’s counseling. I thought about not even doing an FOTD but that would imply that you can’t be beautiful with jacked up skin.
And we all know I’m about going against the grain….rock on acne sufferers! We are still fine and gorgeous!
FACE:
MAC Studio Finish concealer in NW45
MAC Sweet As Cocoa Blush

EYES:
Too Faced Shadow Insurance

L’Oreal HIP Cream shadow paint in Witty
Tarte Femme Fatale eyeshadow palette
MAC Blacktrack fluidline
Urban Decay 24/7 eyeliner in Zero
Cover Girl Lash Blast Length mascara

LIPS:
MAC Funtabulous Dazzleglass (seriously the best dazzleglass EVER!)

Why did I forget I had those rollers in my hair? Haaaa!!!
A mess, y’all. A mess.

And look at that! Zoya’s Fergie almost matches my laptop case. Tres cute!
Got word from ma bird that this Tarte palette is already sold out but standby—if you can’t snag it from Sephora, I would wait until it becomes available. It is quite the jewel!
Have a wonderful weekend, family. Love y’all to pieces!
Stay beautiful,
