Beauty Review: My Pretty Pink Box

In a world full of blue skies, money trees and gumdrop bushes, such would exist little pretty pink boxes full of cosmetic goodies. They would land right on your doorstep; like a little gift.

Wake up, girlfriend!

Pretty Pink Boxes do exist. I can’t remember the last time I have seen something so darling, so useful and so…affordable!

“B, what is a Pretty Pink Box?”

It’s just that, my loves.

See…

“OH! You mean it’s an actual pink box!”

That’s right. What sits inside of this little piece of heaven is a cosmetic newbie or junkie’s dream; sample sizes and coupons of cosmetic companies (most are upcoming and coming baby companies!). This is such a genius idea on so many levels. From what I see, My Pretty Pink Box does two things.

It allows YOU, the consumer to try sample (and most time full) sizes of an array of beauty products. How frustrating is it to purchase an item that just didn’t work for you? For only $11.99, you get the opportunity to try not one, not two or three, but MANY different products from many different brands.

AAAAND……My Pretty Pink Box also allows YOU, the entrepreneur, the make-up line creator, the inventor to get your products OUT there. With every purchase of a My Pretty Pink Box….you have another opportunity of getting your product to be seen, used and re-purchased.

Everyone benefits!!

Especially when goodies like these pop up….

You know you want one.
You know you deserve one.

Once a month My Pretty Pink Box goes out. And once you a month you can treat yourself to an affordable little gift. Actually…..GIFTS since you get so many products in that little box.

What do you think? Would you purchase one of these boxes for yourself? Or for your best friend? Ohmigoodness….wouldn’t this be fabulous little surprise for Mom?

To find out how to BUY or BE IN My Pretty Pink Box, click HERE. The next My Pretty Pink Box will go out April 8th!

Because spoiling yourself ain’t so bad,

P.S.
Emails have been sent out to the Zoya Color Lock System Giveaway winners. Check your emails, ladies! Be sure to confirm with me your name and address before the goodies go off to someone else.

Amor de Lacquer: Yuck colors on brown skin, part I

It’s Amor de Lacquer week!!!! All posts will be related to nail polish and nail care!

Welcome to another post of Amor de Lacquer….the series all about nail polish and nail care! Send me your requests, suggestions and ideas to Brittany@ClumpsOfMascara.com.

Well well well….finally! I have gotten around to start doing some posts on nail polishes that aren’t so flattering on brown skin.

Now don’t think for one second that I came up with this idea. Yall know that I think that us brown skinned people can wear any nail polish color. And I still believe that. But after rummaging through my stash, I have come across some colors that just aren’t so flattering on brown skin.

They aren’t bad. But they aren’t gorgeous either. In fact, I call them “Yuck colors”.

Here’s Yuck Color #1
Misa Hot Couture with flash

No flash

Don’t even try to make me feel good about this one. This color is just awful. I’m not sure how it would look on any skintone really. It’s just funky and I think I purchased it JUST to prove a point. I knew I wouldn’t like it.

I would best describe this color as “browning honey mustard. It takes only two coats and I like the finish but that’s all that I like about it.

Yuck Color #2
OPI’s You Don’t Know Jacques

I don’t care what anyone says…this color looks terrible on me. My sister, J over at Betty Brown Beautification shares the same sentiments. In fact we laugh and say that this color looks like dirty mop water. Tis is true! I am all for uniqueness but this looks gaudy and extremely unflattering on brown skin. See what I mean…

And it looks far worse without the flash…

I don’t even feel pretty with this color on my tips.

Yikes! I know someone out there is wanting to throw a dagger at me. I know this is a highly coveted color. And while the application is to die for, the color itself is not. I am all for uniqueness but I would rather rock 1 inch french manicured nails than You Don’t Know Jacques.

LOL…it is that bad. And I have yet to trash it.

What do you think? Think these are “yuck colors”? Find them flattering? Or do you think I’m loca? Tell me!

Your fellow nail polish junkie,

Amor de Lacquer: At Home French Manicures

It’s Amor de Lacquer week!!!! All posts will be related to nail polish and nail care!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MOMMY!!!!

Welcome back to another post from Amor de Lacquer week here at Clumps of Mascara! This is a reader requested post that challenged the mess out of me.

But yall know I love challenges.

Any French manicure fans out there?

I can’t say that I’m one. I used to rock them like crazy in college, though. I would get pink and white gel nails done religiously. See!

Focus on the nails, kids. Ignore the brows and mess dorm room. Here is another French manicure shot.

Oh yes….I wore it out! And I think one of the reasons why I don’t care for the look any more is because I wore it so much. That and I change my polish every day. But I still like to do it on my toes!

There are many ways to do at-home French manicures. While some like to purchase the kits, I find that I can do the same thing that the nail techs do!

Here is what I use:

-White polish…I love Sally Hansen’s InstaDri polish. The enormous wand is great for all-over coverage on the nail.

-Pure Acetone

-A firm brush (I use MAC 212 SE). I got this brush in a gift set and never used it. I found that it works perfectly for french manicures AND polish clean-up.

For this tutorial, we will be polishing these two bare nails.

Start off with polishing the tip of your nails. Don’t worry about neatness here.

Dip your brush into a little acetone…make sure that the brush isn’t TOO wet. You don’t it dripping but make sure that at least the tip of the brush is wet.

At this point, I turn my nails so that they are facing me (uncomfortable, but it works!) and move the brush upward to clean whatever mess I made in my initial application. Because my nail beds are longer, I like to have a significant amount of white on my tips. It just looks better to me.

And viola!

It is really is easy! I think I may play around with different colors on the tips, just for fun. It’s been awhile since I’ve done a tropical manicure and African manicure…the latter really does exist. LOL!

Polish Pretty,

Amor de Lacquer: Golden Gloves will save your nubs

It’s Amor de Lacquer week!!!! All posts will be related to nail polish and nail care!

Welcome to another post of Amor de Lacquer….the series all about nail polish and nail care! Send me your requests, suggestions and ideas to Brittany@ClumpsOfMascara.com.

Be honest…do you use these?

I can’t even remember the last time I have touched a dish or any household cleanser without wearing my golden gloves.

“B, did you say golden gloves?”

That’s right. If I didn’t have these things, I wouldn’t touch a dish.

Okay, I’m lying. I am crazy when it comes to cleaning so not touching a dish is not an option for me. Wearing the golden gloves have dramatically changed the condition of my nails and hands.

If you aren’t quite sure why your nails aren’t as strong as they could be, submerging your hands into into dishwater for minutes at a time may be the reason.

Playtex has golden gloves on sale at Wal-greens for only $0.99 now until Saturday, April 4, 2009. Better stock up now! It even makes cleaning more fun.

Ahhhh….

Ohhh….

Yes!

I’m kidding about the latter but say it with me, “Golden gloves will save my nubs!”

Somebody out there is laughing with me…ahem, or at me.

Do you wear cleaning gloves? Please say you do! Oh…and don’t forget to enter the Zoya Color Lock System giveaway. CLICK HERE!

Polish Pretty,

Amor de Lacquer: Shades by Barielle, Summer ’09 Collection

It’s Amor de Lacquer week!!!! All posts will be related to nail polish and nail care!

Welcome to another post of Amor de Lacquer….the series all about nail polish and nail care! Send me your requests, suggestions and ideas to Brittany@ClumpsOfMascara.com.

Summer collections already? That’s right! And I couldn’t be more excited. This is my first time playing around in nail polishes by Barielle. Their Sugar Rush collection reminds me of delicious candies and satisfies my chronic candy cravings. And guess what? I am impressed with all of the colors!

And guess what else? There are a ton of creams. Yall know I love cream finishes. Brown girls who only wear different variations of berry colored polishes, brace yourselves for this one. While these colors rock my socks I know others may think they are “too bright”.

I’ll start with the safest color first. LOL!

Cotton Candy

Yum yum! Forget the rides at the fair, just buy me 3 big bags of cotton candy and I am good to go. I am pretty much addicted to the stuff. This color makes me want to lick my nails. HA! I’m not even kidding. It is a fun pink and I thought it was pretty boring in the bottle but it turned out to be fun against my brown skin.

Swizzle Stix

Wow oh wow!! This robin egg blue is the FIRST color like this in my collection. It is absolutely stunning. The application was a little wonky—which can happen with a lot of Big 3 Free polishes but I just adored the outcome. I can’t wait to wear this one on my toes!

Decadence

I wasn’t initially impressed with this color. It looked just “Okay” to me. After rocking it, I have decided that I love it tremendously. What an awesome color! If you can’t quite wear blues or greens, Decadence is the perfect place to start. It isn’t too CRAZY but shows that that you don’t mind “funkin’ up” your polish game a bit. I like it!

Grape Escape

Oh….mi…..goodness! It’s another purple cream, kids. My favorite kind of nail polish ever ever ever ever. Yall hear the echo? Oh yes, this color looks good enough to eat. It seriously looks like a piece of candy. The application of this polish was exceptional. Or maybe it’s because I am bias. I don’t know. Anyway, it is definitely my favorite out of bunch.

Lemondrops

First off, please excuse the application of this polish. There is something about yellows. They always seem to drag down to my cuticles. And clean up is never easy. But honestly, it’s worth it. This color was my official “Makeup Show LA” color. Every time I travel and every event I go to, there is a nail polish color that corresponds with that event. (My birthday-Zoya Tart. Inauguration-Zoya Marry J…see what I mean?) Lemondrops is absolutely beautiful against the brown skin. I think it’s my favorite yellow yet. It’s not TOO bright but isn’t too dull and ashy either. I have to show some colors against clothing or other objects so that yall can see it in a different light.

Go yellow!!

Sweet Addiction

Now this is a different color. I don’t think I have one like this. It reminds me of the ocean. LOL, don’t ask why. Polishes with cream finishes make me so happy. Don’t get me wrong, I am becoming a glitter lover and I can deal with shimmery finishes every now and then but at the end of the day, creams steal my heart. Sweet Addiction is no exception.

I used only 2 coats for each color. I found that some of the polishes were extra thick. I’m not sure why, but it wasn’t fun to deal with. I had to use some polish thinner to get a better formula and once I did that, everything worked out fine! I like Shades by Barielle. They don’t contain any of those yucky chemicals in their polishes (safe for the preggo ladies!) and are $8 a bottle. You can snag them HERE. Expect to see more of their colors from me!

So what do you think? Any of these colors makin’ you swoon?
Tell me!

Your fellow nail polish junkie,

Amor de Lacquer: First Look at Nfu-Oh Polish

It’s Amor de Lacquer week!!!! All posts will be related to nail polish and nail care!

If there is one brand that nail polish enthusiasts go gaga over, it is the South Korea brand Nfu-Oh. I remember first checking getting a glimpse of these beautiful babies at The Nailphile. I was in total awe. I had to have one. Or two. Or three.

Once upon a time Nfu-Oh polishes used to be extremely difficult to get a hold of. Most were shipped from Hong Kong and you can imagine those shipping fees. Luckily, I have found a little angel who lives in the States that ships Nfu-Oh polishes.

Today I will be introducing you to Nfu-Oh #51. I don’t even know how to describe this color. It has a neon purple/blue base with red/gold/green flecks and red glitter. This is a polish with personality, yall! I mean….just look at it!

But then if you photograph it with light…it looks different.

I will tell you now….it is beyond difficult to catch the essence of Nfu-Oh polishes. They are BIPs to the max. BIP meaning better in person. I’m not kidding. Let’s move on, shall we?

I would be remiss if I didn’t talk about how beautiful the bottle designs are.

The corset style bottles are not only darling but the handle makes for easy application.

Speaking of application, because this particular Nfu-Oh polish is so sheer, I like to layer it on top of a color. The best thing about the flecks floating in this polish is that you can get a dozen different looks depending on what color you use as a base.

For this look I used Zoya’s Colbie-a burgundy polish with beautiful shimmer.

Just watch how the Nfu-Oh transforms Colbie. We will use this finger to watch the transformation.

After 2 coats of Nfu-Oh, look what we have!

You MUST click on the picture above to see all of the 3D-esque dimensions of this polish. More beautiful shots of Nfu-Oh #51 in action.

Are you in love yet? I absolutely love what this polish does and plan on adding more to my stash. You can snag these from Fabuloustreet.com. They are retailed at $12.50 and shipping is free. Click HERE to order #51.

So what do you think? Is this not the most amazing polish you have ever seen?
Not impressed?

Polish Pretty,

Amor de Lacquer: Tracey Reese for Sally Hansen, Spring ’09

Welcome to another post of Amor de Lacquer….the series all about nail polish and nail care! Send me your requests, suggestions and ideas to Brittany@ClumpsOfMascara.com. I really wanted to save this post for the week of Amor de Lacquer but I just couldn’t help it!

Zoya’s Spring collection, Twist, may need to scoot over and share positions as my favorite Spring ’09 nail polish collection. Tracey Reese for Sally Hansen Spring 2009 is sick! I have no words for the beauty of this collection. There is a little something for everyone. For the conservative nail polish wearer and for the lady who doesn’t mind rockin’ crazy colors.

First up, my favorite in the collection….

Night Hydrangea

Well of course it’s going to be my favorite. It’s purple. As I’ve mentioned before…every nail polish addict has a color preference and mine will always be purple. This may be the BEST purple I have ever seen. Seriously. And look how beautifully it photographs. I don’t have any color even close to this so I just love it!

Honeydrew

Ohh, pretty. I actually wore this color a weekend or so back and didn’t even want to take it off for work. It is such a fun color. I can’t wait to rock it on my toes.

Nasturtium

Try pronouncing the name of that bad boy. I love this color! My swatch is a little unclear. I’m not sure why I had so many issues photographing it but don’t let my picture quality discourage you from snagging this one. If this doesn’t scream “perfect summer pedi color”, I don’t know what does.

Forsythia

What’s with the names of this collection, SH? Maybe there is some hidden meaning that I don’t know about. I LOVE this color. I have a thing for yellow polishes. Maybe it’s because they are unexpected. And since I LOVE being the exception to any rule, I just adore this one. Brown skinned babes, you better not utter, “But I can’t wear…” Yes, you can. Didn’t President Obama teach you anything? Okay, I’m lame. Moving on….

Tassel

I don’t like gold polishes. There, I said it. I don’t like their foil finishes. I don’t like how they look against my brown skin. Zoya’s Richelle is almost okay with me but for the most part I don’t like golds. BUT…..if I did, I would love Tassel.

I used only 2 coats for each color and each one applied beautifully–as all of my Sally Hansen polishes do. These babies don’t come out until later this month and when they are released, you better run like a mad woman or man because it is hard as Hades trying to find Sally Hansen’s newest nail polish releases. Of course they are at drugstores and will run you a good $6-$8.

See any must haves? Tell me!

Your fellow nail polish junkie,

[EDIT: Thanks Ma’at for letting me know that most of these polishes are named after flowering plants!]

Amor de Lacquer: Dark but not Black purples

Welcome to another post of Amor de Lacquer….the series all about nail polish and nail care! Send me your requests, suggestions and ideas to Brittany@ClumpsOfMascara.com.

I got an email from a reader who was annoyed with finding the same boring purple shades of polish. I don’t know what it is about purple polishes but they are really my polish color of choice. I have more purples in my collection than any other color. And I can’t stop purchasing them. Exactly how many shades of purple polish does anyone need?

I don’t even know, yall. But I feel like I need to have them all. This one is for you, Tiffany. Some of these polishes have already made their appearance here at Clumps of Mascara but they are so lovely that I had to bring them back!

Zoya’s Malia

I love this color. Nothing beats Zoya’s formulas and application. They are turning me into quite the “healthy polish” snob. Zoya’s polishes don’t contain toluene, formaldehyde and DHP. You can snag this at Zoya.com for only $6.

Sally Hansen’s Night Hydrangea

Ohmigoodness! I have no words for the amazement of this purple. It is crazy unique and looks great on the nails and toes. This polish comes from the Tracey Reese for Sally Hansen Spring ’09 collection. This baby won’t hit stores until March but I’m telling you now…you better get ready because it will be hard to find these $8 polishes at your drugstores. They go fast!

OPI Can You Dig It?

Yes, I can. Sheer beauty. And it’s a cream. This is probaly one of my top 10 favorite polishes. If you can’t find this one in stores, you can get it for $4.75 at my one of my favorite e-tailers HERE.

Revlon’s Primal Purple

Ohhh la laaaa, it’s a jewel-toned purple. And it’s dark but not quite black. I love this purple. It had blue undertones and sparkles like an amethyst.

Misa’s Forbidden Lust

This is one polish that I can rock for at least 3 days. It is just a show-stoppin’ kind of color. My friend Ellis almost tried to snag this one from me but as much as I love her, she wasn’t gettin’ this baby! You can also get Misa polishes for only $3 at Head2ToeBeauty.com

I hope this helps, Tiffany! Purple polishes do indeed look beautiful on brown skin. You better rock ’em, girl! Which shade do you like the best? Got a purple you think I should try?
