Mascara Monday: Maybelline XXL Pro-Bold

Here’s my 3rd out of 4 reviews of Maybelline XXL Pro mascaras. While some mascaras promise curl, length or volume..this baby promises uh…boldness. Yeah, don’t ask questions yet. Let’s get this party started!

Maybelline XXL Pro Bold mascara

Price: 5 out of 5
Packaging (Brush Wand): 3 out of 5
Overall: 3 out of 5

What it claims:

The truth:
Uh…I still don’t know what I’m looking for.

What I loved about it: I think it gives great volume!
What I didn’t like: It was a bit too flake-tastic for me.

Overall:  Every now and then I come across a mascara that puzzles me. Such is the case with this baby here. Now don’t judge me but I am a writer and a self-proclaimed etymologist. Words are my best friends and when they don’t make sense, it makes me want to cry. WTF is ‘bold volume’? What does that even mean? I don’t know about this one, Maybelline. As far as what this mascara is supposed to do, all we get is that it is supposed to provide ’24HR wear and bold volume’. How does bold volume compare to regular volume? I don’t even know, chile.

So while I’m puzzled at the claims of this mascara, I must say…it did do what it said it was going to do in terms of volume. It provided a good amount! But is it bold? Um, I don’t know. It wasn’t THAT bold but it was good nonetheless. But when it came to the 24HR wear, uh not so much. Not only did it not last an entire work day, but it would also start flaking on me a few hours after applying. This is no bueno for those with irritable eyes or contact wearers. But check this out…

This is a fiber mascara. Most fiber mascaras provide length, not volume. Interestiiiiing. But this does give some explanation as to why it flaked on me a bit.

Like the other mascaras in the XXL Pro family, it is dual ended.

Step 1, which promises volume…

And Step 2, which promises “24HR wear”…

The wands were so so. Not good or bad but average.

Lashes without mascara
(curled lashes)

Lashes with 2 coats of mascara

After 1 coat of Step 1…

After 1 coat of Step 2…

The volume is pretty darn good, uh? Oh yeah! But I’m still lost on that whole “bold” thing. This really should have been called a volume mascara and left at that. I’m just sayin’…
Would I recommend it?: I think Maybelline makes better volume mascaras. The wands on this one weren’t THAT great and although the volume is pretty good, the flaking just ain’t fun.

Until next time…..

Iman and Clumps!

If you haven’t been following the Clumps’ Facebook fan page or my tweets, I was selected as a winner for a contest by Iman Cosmetics. Yes, I died when I found out. I was one of those kids that never even won a game in Bingo. I was flown to NYC, put up in the fabulous Affinia Shelburne and attended a blogger exclusive event.

Thanks to the Facebook fam, I got some ideas of how to wear my make-up. And the Twitter fam helped me feel confident in my dress…

Because, I don’t know if y’all know it or not but I am not much of a fashionista. I can get by and look fly but it ain’t easy. Ha!

And I spent some time playing with Iman Cosmetics and chatting with the ever fabulous Iman!!

Yep, we’re BFFs now. :)

I’m headed to the airport to jump on a flight back home. Stay tuned event details, lots more pictures and a video too. In the meantime, check out IMAN Cosmetics’ Facebook photo album of the event here. Y’all love how my bra strap is showing in one of the pictures, right? Classic B!

Ciao for now, loves!

Olay Complete’s New and not so Improved…

I’m not happy. I’m not. WHO told Olay to change their Olay Complete face moisturizer? I’m okay with packaging changes. But when you start dabbling in the ingredients, that’s when I get a little perturbed.

The old Olay Complete looked like this:

And the new one looks like this…

Packaging-wise, I can appreciate the new changes. But formula-wise? It gets an F from me. The new Olay Complete burns my skin, has a sunscreen-y smell and is a little oilier than its predecessor. My skin is left greasier and it’s just not pleasant. I feel better knowing that I’m not the only one hating the new Olay Complete.

Check out some of the reviews on the website:

Boo to Olay for disappointing so many customers. And then I saw a little note at the bottom of another bad review…

Talk about consumer power!

Have you had any new and not so improved products?

Where in the world is Clumps?

Right now I’m chillin’ in an open phone booth at Orlando International Airport. People keep looking at me because I

(a) Keep making wacky pictures at the camera on my computer
(b) Took off my shoes and slid on Hello Kitty socks
(c) Have on insanely blue eye shadow (think MAC’s Freshwater)
(d) A combination of reasons A-C

*shrugs shoulders*

I am headed somewhere to attend something and I can’t WAIT to tell y’all all about it. But until then, I’m going to be a butt and leave you in suspense. Got any guesses?

Amor de Lacquer: Orly’s Foil FX and Sweet Collections

Welcome to another post of Amor de Lacquer….the series all about nail polish and nail care! Send me your requests, suggestions and ideas to Brittany@ClumpsOfMascara.com.

“I was walking along, minding my business,
When out of an orange-colored sky,
Flash! Bam! Alakazam!
Wonderful you came by.”

I grew up on Nat King Cole and one of my favorite songs by him is “Orange Colored Sky”. I swear I started singing it when I first saw Orly’s Foil FX collection.

I know what you’re thinking. Something is missing right? Yep! I snagged 2 of Foil FX’s 3 polishes and 1 of 6 from the Sweet collection. I can explain. Watch this!

The color missing from the Foil FX collection is Rage; a rusty rose foil. It didn’t tickle my fancy so I passed on it. What was left from the collection were these two wonders.

Shine is amazing! This polish is seriously a must have. This is the foil-est polish I own. I got so many compliments when I wore it. While nothing can compare to getting your nails Minx-ed with silver foil, Shine ain’t too far behind.

Luxe is GOLD! Really really gold. It isn’t as bling-y as I wanted it to be but it is still a great foil. I’m not a fan of most gold polishes but this has enough shine power to keep me happy.

The formula on the Foil FX polishes are impeccable. You can get complete coverage in a good 2 coats. I did 3 on these, though…just because I like to push it to the limit. Enormous fan of this collection, Orly!

Now of the 6 polishes in Orly’s Sweet collection, Snowcone was the only one that I really wanted. The other 5 were quite tempting but not terribly unique.

Snowcone is a blue yummy-lusciousness! Now that I’m looking at it, it may a dupe to Zoya’s Yummy.

I did have an incentive for buying this though. Each of the polishes in this collection come with a gloss.
I put mine on my keychain!

It’s a clear gloss but is surprisingly moisturizing and perfect for on the go.

That’s the thing about Orly. There are such a unique polish company. You’ve got the rubberized handles, cool polish names and you never know what cute little knick-knack you’re going to get with your polish.

I got these from Head2ToeBeauty.com for $3.50 a bottle.

Your fellow nail polish junkie,

Homemade Brown Sugar Scrub

A reader recently emailed me about face scrubs. She was looking for a new one and wanted to know about my favorite.

Since I have been using the Clarisonic , I don’t feel the need to exfoliate my face using a scrub. But every now I like to get a deep down scrubbing. I’ve never found the need to go out and spend a ton of money on a scrub when nature makes the best ingredients.

One being good ole’ olive…

I use olive oil for EVERYTHING! I use it as a carrier oil for body concoctions. I use it on my locs. I apply it to my cuticles each night. I use it in my spring and spinach salads. And for my omelets. Olive oil is just divine.

This scrub is ridiculously easy to make.

I take a bowl of organic brown sugar

And pour in a good amount of olive oil. I don’t measure but if you are trying this for the first time, go easy on the olive oil if you have oily skin.

I mash it all together with my fingers…

Sometimes I like to add in a little oatmeal. I normally crush the oats with my mortar and pestle but laziness will prevent you from doing the little things. Ha!

And then I apply!

It really is that simple. I have also used baking soda and castile soap as a scrub. All natural and totally affordable.

Do you make your scrubs?

Eye shadow Brushes for Newbies: The video version

Lately I have been getting a quite a few emails about eye shadow brushes for newbies. I remember when I was first getting into make-up and had NO idea what kind of brushes to buy. It’s overwhelming to say the least. I did a post about that here but here are some more tidbits:

(1) Do not feel like you have to spend a ton of money on brushes. Girlfriend, you better take your behind in CVS, Target, Walgreens, Longs or Rite-Aid and cop some cheap brushes.

(2) You don’t need a WHOLE bunch of brushes if you are just starting out. A lid application brush, blending brush and highlighting brush is all I think the average newbie needs. When you find yourself wanting to do more detailed and intricate looks, then invest in more brushes. But for the time being..3-5 brushes should suit your eye shadow needs just fine.

(3) Wash your brushes regularly!
