FOTD Friday: How to Wear A Red Lip

Hmmm mmmm, so y’all thought I was done talking about red lips, uh? Nope! You see…there are STILL several brown girls who think they can’t rock a red lip. Seriously, y’all? I can understand not wanting to wear a red lip work or class as it tends to be a little bold in those surroundings. But haven’t you had some moments when you just felt…”bad”? Fearless? Powerful? Some days call for a red lip. And so, my sisters…we’re going to find some ways to ease into wearing one.

You red-y?

First, remember this…if you’re not used to wearing the color red in the first place, it’s going to be mega hard getting used to wearing it on your lips. Take baby steps with the color. If you can’t rock it on the lips just yet, try wearing a red flower.

Yes, I know it’s very Niecy Nash of me but it’s Spring in Florida and this is how we roll, son! Ha! Okay, so even if you’re not down with wearing a red flower in your hair, try red finger nail polish.

Orly’s Poison Apple and Zoya’s America look stunning on the nails and can make you feel a wee bit more comfortable about rocking a red lip.

When it comes to wearing red lips, I always like to have a pretty neutral eye look. For today’s look I only used Urban Decay’s Primer Potion in Sin on the lid and liner on the waterline and lower lash line.

See the difference the liner on the left (my right) eye makes? Oh yeah! The reds we will be using today are MAC’s Port Red and Maybelline’s Are You Red-dy.

Never eeeever judge a lipstick by how it looks on the outside. What looks to be scary and highly pigmented lipstick can really be a moderately build-able lipstick. Don’t be intimidated!

Check out the differences between Port Red and Are You Red-dy.

Do you see how Port Red has a bit of a blue undertone to it? If you’re not used to rocking reds, this may not be the kind of red you want to start off with. One light coat of Are You Red-dy gives the lip a little red tint.

Rock this for a while and then head on other to step two. So you’re red-y (okay, I’ll stop…hehe) to get a little more red in, uh? Careful now. One swipe of Port Red is pretty heavy.

But…wowsers!!

If the red is still TOO red for you, you can always tone it down with a lip liner. Take MAC’s Vino for example…

This liner has a little pink in it and will darken the red. But, my sisters…puhlease do NOT forget to blend. The following is not a good look.

Yes…blend blend blend!

So while this lip is slightly darker than the previous one, it’s still red. I LOVE red lipstick. I’m not the type to wear it all the time but I love it when I’m feelin’ like a bad mamma jamma. So again, I urge my brown girls out there…try a red lip. No, you’re lips aren’t too big and no, your complexion is NOT too dark. There are many ways to rock a red lip. Do what works for you and feel confident doing it.

Love y’all!

Amor de Lacquer: Taking care of the cuticles

Welcome to another post of Amor de Lacquer….the series all about nail polish and nail care! Send me your requests, suggestions and ideas to Brittany@ClumpsOfMascara.com.

We talk a lot about nail polish collections and application but I can’t believe that I am jut now getting around to doing a post about cuticle care. And I should know better because I am constantly moisturizing mine.

Seriously. Every time I wash my hands, I moisturize my cuticles. I do it twice a day after showers. I do it before bed. I do in in the car. I do it while waiting in long lines. I am seriously a cuticle moisturizing fiend.

Before we go any further, let me show you exactly what cuticles are:

This picture is the perfect example because mine look AWFUL.

You can use anything to moisturize them. I tend to use my regular hand cream but I also have Burt’s Bee’s Lemon Butter Cuticle cream in my purse and at home.

Words can not express how much I love this stuff. It is absolutely divine! The lemony smell makes my heart content and I always feel like I’ve had a wonderful little manicure each time I massage this in my cuticles.

Some people cut their cuticles off. I can’t say I’m a fan of this because cuticles help protect the nails and act as a shield. The most I do is push them down during manicures. But you have to do what works for you and what compliments your nails best.

Guest Post: Spring Fashion by Channing

*taps mic*

Is this thing on? Helllllooo out there! I’m Channing, a freelance fashion and beauty journalist. I recently started writing my own blog, Channing in the City.

Brittany was nice enough to share her lovely readers with me because it would be nice for someone to actually read my posts for once. Hehe!

Anywhoo, onward with the post. Are you looking to update your look for spring? Allow me to be of some assistance.

I think everyone deserves to be fabulous and fashionable without breaking the bank. So if you are just looking to add a few trendy pieces to a wardrobe or even starting from scratch, here are a few major trends (for cheap!) that will march you into the right direction.

  1. SEQUINtial Order
Think sequins are only appropriate for night? Not anymore! Don’t be afraid to shine in the daytime as well.
  1. Big BANGles
Think of bangles like last season’s signature chunky necklaces, the bigger the better! Pile them on.
  1. Naughty and Nautical
  1. LWD- The Little WHITE Dress
This spring, ditch your faithful LBD for something, well, WHITE!
  1. Peachy Keen
The hot new look for lips and tips this spring? Peach! Bold or light, this shade is universally flattering.
  1. AT EASE!
With military inspired looks of course. Pair a structured military jacket with a ruffle-y dress for a utilitarian look with a feminine touch.
  1. If I Were A Boy…
No need to wonder, just don a boy’s blazer! The boyfriend blazer trend is marching into spring and summer.
  1. Pick Your Platform

Clog, that is! Platform shoes are back in a major way. The can be worn with wide leg jeans just as easily as a dress.

B Says: I love Channing! Y’all know I’m no fashionista (I be tryin’ though…lol) so it helps to have fashion-savvy ladies just a click away.  Want to write a guest post for Clumps? Email me at Brittany@ClumpsOfMascara.com for consideration.

50 million pound challenge: Gettin’ my Fit on Deck

Yikes! It’s been a while since the last check-in, uh? How is everyone doing on the fitness and health tip? Are we incorporating more greens? Drinking more water? Making healthier swaps? And uh…I can’t believe we haven’t talked about fitness yet!

Along with changing my diet, I have also been quite the gym rat for the past 2 years. There is a gym right on my condo’s property. It’s free and has treadmills, bikes, and free/machine weights. I used to hit the gym EVERY morning but now I’m going at least 3-5 times a week.

And at the crack of dawn too…

That’s right. I hit the gym at 6:00 in the morning. Because working out after work is SO not an option. But not working out is not an option either. Sheesh!

Even when I don’t head to the gym, I still need to get some kind of work-out in. Yoga is a MUST for me every morning and evening. I’ll go into more detail about that later but in the meantime, try the Sun Salutation here. Another way I get some good cardio and stretching in is by pulling out my Fit Deck cards.

Please tell me y’all have heard about Fit Deck before. No? They rock! They are a customized deck of exercise cards that give you little work-outs to do. I’ve got the Core Blast but they have many other deck options to choose from. So whether you sit at a desk all day, are expecting a baby or a teacher who wants to get your kids to move around a bit, these deck of cards will find a way to get you moving.

Take for example, the Vertical Scissor exercise.

I have a ridiculous obsession with ab work-outs so when I draw my 5-cards a day, this baby always manages to find its way in there. This card not only shows me WHAT this exercise will work out, but it gives me a picture and detailed instructions.

And you can go at your own pace when it comes to reps.

When it comes to this one, I usually do 5 sets of 10. And then I pass out. The deck also includes information cards that can help you work out certain areas of the body. In this instance, stretching the lower body…

I like to toss them in my travel bag so I don’t make any excuses for not working out. Pretty cool, uh? They start at $9.95 and they even have decks for seniors, kids and for Yoga. Ohh, Mommy…I want that one! Learn more about Fit Deck here.

How are you getting your exercise in?

Mascara Monday: Chanel Inimitable Waterproof mascara

Finally! I am reviewing another mascara that has been on my “To Be Reviewed” list for a little over a year. I know, I know. I am certainly late with this one but let’s go ahead and get this party started!

Chanel Inimitable Waterproof mascara

Price: 1 out of 5($30…yowzers!)
Packaging (Brush Wand): 5 out of 5
Overall: 5 out of 5

What it claims:
“Exceptionally gorgeous lashes that stay that way, even through inclement weather or time in the pool, are now yours. The mascara that delivers it all — volume, length, curl and precise separation — does it with a long-wearing, waterproof formula that won’t flake or smudge. Pro-Vitamin B5 hydrates and conditions lashes to keep them supple and healthy-looking. A unique brush design provides precise definition and separation of lashes, even the finest.” (source)

The truth:
Um, yeah…this is a $30 winner!
What I loved about it: It feels light on the lashes and gives GREAT volume!
What I didn’t like:Well, because I’m cheap and don’t like spending this much on a mascara, I wasn’t a fan of the price.

Overall:  I’m not much of a shopper. Never have been. I shop only when I need to (which is usually the day or night before a big event) and I’m in and out within an hour. But there’s something about strolling through department stores like Bloomingdale’s. I could have $6.49 to my name and I would still want to try on shoes, glide my fingers over purses and play in luxury make-up lines. Including Chanel; a brand that I have never tried before.

This mascara REALLY surprised me. I’ve heard both good and bad about it but…wow! It really exceeded my expectations. Yes, it has a ridiculously high price tag and true, it’s a mascara that I would never purchase without y’all requesting it but it is phenomenal! This mascara gave me such thick lashes. It is build-able so you can apply one coat or three coats without running into clump issues. Score! Inimitable leaves the lashes light weight and that eliminates flaking. My least favorite thing about it is that it burns! Perhaps it’s just me but I noticed my eyes burning just a wee bit when the first coat. Not sure what that’s about. I don’t think it’s a deal breaker because it wasn’t painful or uncomfortable, just…odd.

The wand reminds me a lot of Maybelline’s Pulse Perfection‘s wand.

Which is a good thing because it makes for great separation. Are you a fan of waterproof mascaras? Oh yeah…this baby holds up!

Lashes without mascara
(curled lashes)

Lashes with 2 coats of mascara

Would I recommend it?: I do! While I think there are drugstore mascaras that can give you the same results, it’s great to know that you can get what you paid for with this Chanel mascara.

Until next time…..

A crazed mascara reviewer,

FOTD Friday: Red is the color of the week!

Happy Friday, fam! Lately I’ve been all over the color red. I’ve been rocking everything from red dress shirts, red pumps (go ‘head Red Pump Project!), red lipsticks and then I went over the top and dyed my hair red. You can see the results of that over at my hair blog Loc Rocker.

It’s so sad. I never know when to stop when it comes to color. Remember when I was obsessed with purple? I ended up dyeing my hair purple then too. Sheesh! Do I have a disorder or somethin’, y’all? HA! Anywhoovers…I ended up doing something I hardly ever do…a red eye!

Now before we go any further, let me explain the horror show that is my brows. Uh…here’s the thing, I’ve decided to grow them up because uh, I want to start a new trend of accepting naturally thick and bushy brows and so—nah, I’m jivin’, y’all. They look like this because I haven’t gone to my threading lady in weeks. But we digress…ha!

Because my red hair dye didn’t take as much as I wanted it to, I decided to go even redder! And not with chemicals this time…but with yarn!

I wrapped bright red yarn around 2 locs and got that pop of red I was looking for. Holla! And as for my red eye,  I pulled out one of my favorite shadows, NARS Emmanuel. Check out the look!

FACE:
MAC Studio Finish concealer in NW45
MAC Sweet As Cocoa blush
NARS Dolce Vita blush

EYES:
L’Oreal HIP cream paint in Witty

Urban Decay primer potion
NARS Emmanuel e/s
MAC Sketch e/s
White shadow from Coastal Scents palette (my review here)
Sally Hansen Natural Beauty Forever Stay eye pencil
….and a secret mascara that I’m testing for Lancôme

LIPS:
MAC Lip liner in Vino
Lancôme Color Design lipstick in Lucky Kiss

NARS Dolce Vita is a great dusty rose blush. It gives a lil’ somethin’ without going overboard.

Lately I’ve been jammin’ to this…

Boy oh boy…some old skool Outkast is the best!  I’m not the biggest fan of rap/hip-hop but I can get down with with conscious lyrics and sick beats. What have you been jammin’ to these days? And who is this B.o.B guy? When it comes to new music, I so live under one of those rocks. Tragic!

Have a fabulous weekend,

Beauty Bee-haviors: I will only buy ____!!

Welcome to another post from the Beauty Bee-haviors series. In this series we have open discussions about any and everything in the beauty world.

We haven’t done one of these in a while, uh? This idea came from a girlfriend of mine who came over and spent some time rummaging through my make-up collection.

“Gosh B!” she says. “You sure do have a lot of different brands.”

“Uh, yeah…” I reply. “Don’t you?”

She turns and looks at me and says, “Girl, no! I only use ____. They are the greatest. They have the best shadows, liners, lipglosses and foundation. Why would I need to go anywhere else?”

My look…

Now, I’m not going to tell you which brand she was talking about. I’m sure you’ve already guessed it because like her, I was an obsessed and faithful fan of that brand. And ONLY that brand. It wasn’t until I got heavily involved with blogging and checked out other brands that I realized…um, there are A LOT of good cosmetic companies out there.

I simply don’t have a favorite. How can I? I love Maybelline, YSL, Lancôme and Rimmel mascaras. I love Stila, Clinique, NYX and Illamasqua glosses. I am in love with NARS, Iman and Cargo bronzers. Milani, MAC and Jordana make great lip liners and when it comes to polishes Zoya, China Glaze, Nubar, Sally Hansen, Orly, Diamond Comestics and Nfu-Oh rock! Just how in the world am I supposed to be faithful to one?

So my question to you iiiiis?

Are you faithful to only a handful of beauty brands or will buy anything that catches your eye?
