Beauty Review: Maybelline Lasting Drama gel eyeliner

Gel eyeliners! Gel liners are seriously a lot like mascaras in that I love to buy them to see if they are better than the previous ones I’ve tried. Once upon a time, gel eyeliners used to be hard to find in drugstores. But thanks to L’Oreal HIP and now Maybelline, you can now grab the ‘used to be high-end only’ liners at your nearest CVS, Walgreens, Duane Reade, Rite Aid, Longs, etc. Hollerz!

Now..let’s take a look at Maybelline’s Lasting Drama

The packaging makes some pretty serious claims. 24 hours? Really?

Let’s take a closer look at the packaging.

Waterproof? Check! Smudgeproof? Check! These are qualities that I NEED in a good gel liner. Well y’all, I am proud to say that Lasting Drama is a phenomenal drugstore gel liner. It isn’t too thick and cake-y (like L’O HIP’s) but it isn’t as watery (like Clinique’s) either.
I snagged the color in Charcoal but it isn’t as dark as I normally like my black liners. Still, it isn’t too shabby for drama-less work appropriate looks. It also comes in a brown and purple and with a liner brush.

If I were you, I’d trash it and go with a better angled brush. Two cookies for effort, Maybelline but I’m not sure if this is the best kind of brush to use with a gel liner. BUT…if someone finds success with it, please let me know!
MAC Fluidline in Blacktrack and Maybelline’s Lasting Drama liner…

So is it a good dupe for a higher end brand gel liner? I think so! I got it on sale for $6.99. The average luxury gel liner costs anywhere between $13-$25. So if you do the math…well, do you even need to? Lasting Drama is an incredible deal with great performance.

Eye see you!

Yep…it has my eye of approval. Okay, I’ll stop it with the ‘eye’ jokes. Eye promise.

Have you tried this yet?
Whatcha think?

Giveaway Winner! Go Red for Women Campaign

Gosh, I can’t believe I’m 402 years late in letting you all know the lucky winner of the $25 Macy’s gift card. I held the giveaway a good 2 weeks ago. I hit up my 11-year old sister on Skype (insane that she uses it, lol) and had her choose a winner.

That would be sphinx63 . Congratulations!!! Thank you all for your heartfelt entries and stay tuned for more sponsored giveaways.

Clairol Professional Jazzing giveaway!

I’m a fan of hair color. I can’t deny it. I suppose it started when I was 14 when I got my first set of blond highlights. And then I discovered the power of Kool-Aid. I would mix 4 packets of orange and 3 of red (not cherry, lol) to make a fierce dye. Never mind that every time it rained, my hair would stain my shirts. It was all worth it.

Back when I had an afro I used Clairol’s Jazzing in Bluest Black. The results…

Super goth B! I remember the evening after I did that dye job I went and got my nose pierced. What can I say? Darker hair does something to you! LOL

I have also loved Clairol’s Jazzing temporary colors. They aren’t as damaging as a permanent color but still manage to give you intense color. Loves it!

Clairol is giving away 2 bottles of Cherry Cola Jazzing temporary hair color.

Simply leave your email address in the comment section. It’s that easy!

Oh…..and while you are at it, check out their Facebook page. Each day they are giving away gift cards, concert tickets, cameras and more. And if you already have some Jazzing in your hair, enter the Fierce Fridays contest and share your before/after pix to win a 3-day, 2-night fierce hair makeover in NYC by celebrity hair stylist Tippi Shorter.

Dang, I wish I could enter. But I already have 4 different colors in my hair and my hairstylist says “no no”. *sigh*

This contest is open to International readers and ends Friday, February 26, 2010 at 12:00 pm EST.

Good luck!

Disclaimer: Color your hair at your own risk. I highly recommend consulting with a professional cosmetologist before dyeing your hair. Never mind that I’ve colored my locs 4 times in 14 months….like parents say, do as I say, not as I do. :)

New York Fashion Week: Ashunta Sheriff does LaQuan Smith’s show

Lady Ashunta is quickly becoming one of my favorite make-up artists in the game. Here’s what she created for LaQuan Smith!

“The look for LaQuan Smith’s Fall 2010 collection was exciting because it was his debut to the fashion world after such huge buzz for the last few years. We wanted to make it special and LaQuan’s concept of water and sand inspired the sun glow goddess look we created using COVERGIRL and COVERGIRL Queen Collection. I applied COVERGIRL Smoky ShadowBlast in Bronze Fire on the lids and completed the eye look with a few coats of COVERGIRL LashBlast Length Mascara and Urban Decay glitter eye liner in the corner of the eye. To make the lips pop with brilliance, I mixed COVERGIRL ShineBlast Lip Gloss  in Flare with MAC Gold pigment. COVERGIRL Queen Collection Natural Hue Minerals Bronzer was the driving force to give glowing radiant
skin.”

Mascara Monday:Hard Candy Lash Call Lengthening mascara

Along with sending a hearty hello to all of Brittany’s fabulous readers, allow me to introduce myself. My name is Asha and I’m a college friend Britt trusted to do a guest mascara review. I’ll do my best to make her proud. Ahem!*clears throat* Here goes nothing:

One of my personal mottos is this: Every girl needs her daily dose of Urban Decay. So, when I discovered the company selling its Hard Candy cosmetics in Wal-Mart, well your girl just had to jump on it. I decided to try Hard Candy’s Lash Call Lengthening Mascara and see if it gives Urban Decay quality without the designer price tag. Did it deliver? Don’t be lazy, keep reading!

Hard Candy Lash Call
Lengthening mascara

Price: 5 out of 5 (I bought it for $6 at Wal-Mart. *High five* to all the frugalistas out there)
Packaging (Brush Wand): 4 out of 5
Overall: 4 out of 5

What it claims:
“Just one application of this rich mascara sends lashes to new lengths!”
The truth: It got me about 85% of the way before I had to call cab .
What I loved about it: I really adore the design of the wand. It’s thin so I don’t constantly poke my eye out. Oh, and along with being animal friendly, it’s got some pretty gorgeous body art.
What I didn’t like: It gives you length but not much volume. I like a little fluff!
Overall: I was intrigued by Hard Candy ads in magazines as a kid. It didn’t help that my mom tried to forbid me from wearing make-up until I was 17. Booooo! We see how well that worked, didn’t we? Anywho, I almost did 14 back-flips when I saw the Hard Candy display when grocery shopping. Being the avid fan of Urban Decay’s quality and answering the question, “Are those your real lashes?” I figured I would fall in love with this mascara. It did a good job but it wasn’t great.

The thin wand intrigued me the most.

I can not tell you how many times I’ve poked myself in the eyes or how many clumping issues bigger, more complex wands have given me. This mascara allows you to apply however many coats you want without all the extra fuss—but you’ll have to sacrifice a little fluff.

Trying to find a mascara that takes you to “new lengths” and gives you maximum volume is like trying to find a 4-leaf-clover (Go me for that nice St. Patty’s Day plug!). I love volume—when I’m in the car, I crank it up, when I do my hair, I tease it up and, when I dress my lashes, I like ‘em mega, honey!
Hard Candy claims the formula in this mascara is exclusive and I they must be on to something because it dries pretty quickly and is easy to clean up. Just don’t go see any tearjerkers while rocking these babies. Lash Call Lengthening Mascara comes in 6 fun colors to match your mood. This mascara will give you its all but it’s up to you what you decide to do with it. I liked it just fine!

Lashes without mascara
(did not curl lashes)

Lashes with 1 coat of mascara

Lashes with 2 coats of mascara

Would I recommend it?: Yes ma’am. It gets the job done, especially if you’re on a budget or value having options.
[B’s add-in: I wanna try! How insane is it that I can’t find Hardy Candy anywhere? Asha and I live minutes away from each other and I am ca-learly in the wrong Wally World. Ugh!! Any Hard Candy fans?]
A crazed mascara reviewer,

Inglot has a website!

Well, can you believe it? About time, right?

The good news is that the website is pretty user-friendly. It also tells you where other Inglot locations. Most are outside of the US but I’ve heard rumors about more opening in New York and even one in Las Vegas.

I’m still not satisfied until one opens in Florida. Umph! Okay, I’m kidding. Somewhat.

The bad news is that prices aren’t up and I don’t see an option for being able to purchase products online.   Let’s hope that comes soon. In the meantime check out…

FOTD Friday: The Tatyana Ali look tutorial

Happy Friday!

Sooo, guess what? I recently saw Tatyana Ali on the red carpet and her simple yet stunning look took my breath away.

How beautiful does she look? The WOW-factor comes from her jewelry. A look like this has 3 focuses.

1) Defined brows
3)  Minimal liner with a shot of gold eye shadow right on the lid
3) Luminous skin with a rosy matte blush

Here’s my little tutorial on how to achieve a look like this..

First up…brows!

My untouched brows require a ton of maintenance.

After a spoolie and a little liner, I’ve got the definition I’m looking for.

Tatyana has gold eyeshadow on her lid. And just on the lid. I whipped out my Barbie for Stila gold shadow…

…and applied it right to the lid. She doesn’t look as if she used any liner on the lower lashline but to make this look a little more “me”, I winged out my liner.

And lastly… the skin! I hid my dark marks with concealer…

Applied MAC’s Sweet As Cocoa..

I usually apply it just on the cheeks but to get that all over glow, I buffed it all over. And then I pulled out CARGO’s Lyon.

I absolutely adore this blush. Just a dab to a the apples..

And boom la wow! Final look…

The lipstick is NYC Cosmetics’ Garnet and Stila’s Brown Sugar Lipglaze. Fabulous combo.  I can dig it. I’m loving this natural look.

What do you think?
Do you not love matte blushes? I mean, wow!

Have a fabulous weekend,

New York Fashion Week: Fashion for Relief, Nail Polish for Me!

My Auntie Naomi Campbell is nothing short of fierce. Yes, she’s a diva and may toss her cell phone at your head but let’s be honest…most of us are like that, right?
On Friday, February 12, Ms. Campbell hosted the Fashion for Relief runway show and proceeds went to Haiti’s earthquake victims. I just love when celebrities can incorporate their talents and passions for good causes. Her show was also a good reminder that Haiti STILL needs our help. Good for you, Auntie. And yes, she’s really my Aunt. She just doesn’t know it yet though.

And I have more good news…Dashing Diva nail polish adorned some of the models’ nails with the ever so lovely Diamond District.

Diamond District may very well be getting hauled by me. Look at its fabulousness of the nails of the models.

I need this color now!
