Beauty Review: Carol’s Daughter Hair Milk and Tui Hair Smoothie

I have more Carol’s Daughter products to share with you!

I received an email after the last Carol’s Daughter review that I thought I would answer in this post.

Q: Are Carol’s Daughter’s products just for women with natural hair?

A: Absolutely not! Anyone with any hair type can use these products. My hair is natural AND loc’d. My opinion of these products will probably only benefit other ladies with hair like mine. But I love to review them anyway….just in case something I say peaks your interest enough to make some purchases yourself.

And with that, let’s bring it on!

Hair Milk

Price: 4 out of 5 ($12 from Sephora.com)
Packaging: 5 out of 5
Overall: 3 out of 5

What it claims:
“This lightweight, fast-absorbing lotion for the hair is made with essential oil of lemongrass to stimulate natural oil production and hydrate strands. Infused with a splash of lily of the valley fragrance in a rich base of oils, shea butter, cocoa butter, and vitamins E and C, Hair Milk is ideal for defining natural curls and giving hair loads of shine and bounce.” (source)

The truth:
Hmmm, it isn’t the best on my locs but I could see how it works well for ladies with curly hair.

What I loved about it: The consistency is great. It isn’t at all sticky.

What I didn’t like:
I’m not the biggest fan on the smell. I love lemongrass in my food but not so much when it is the primary ingredient (scent). But it’s a personal thang. I have friends who love the smell!

Overall: I think this product would be divine for ladies with curly hair. My girl Wes over at Honey Brown Sugar comes to mind. It doesn’t work so well with my locs simply because they soak it up so quickly. It is as if I never put anything in my hair. HA! The consistency rocks though.

It isn’t meant to go on the scalp but I used on mine anyway. And it feels good!

Next up….

Tui Hair Smoothie

Price: 3 out of 5 ($19 from Sephora.com)
Packaging: 5 out of 5
Overall: 5 out of 5

What it claims:
“Tui Hair Smoothie is an intense conditioning treatment for normal to dry hair made from a super-rich emulsion of shea butter, cocoa butter, and jojoba oil. Calming chamomile aids in taming of frizzy, unmanageable hair, while the fragrant Tui blend of guava, mango, and passion fruit tantalize the senses.” (source)

The truth:
Wow, this stuff smells delicious….and my hair adores it!

What I loved about it: I love love loooove the smell. Think of a sweet mango mixed with honey and raspberries. Random, I know but this stuff is delicious.

What I didn’t like:
It is a little on the pricey side.

Overall: Wowsers. My hair loves this Intense Conditioning Treatment. Like…..a lot. After shampooing my hair I apply a generous amount of the Tui Hair Smoothie all over and let it sit in a shower cap. Because I have super dry hair, I usually have to apply some olive oil as well. After rinsing out, my hair is soft. And it smells divine!

I wish this you could get this scent in a lotion. Now that would be dope!

Stay tuned for more Carol’s Daughter reviews. This review will also appear on my hair blog: LocRocker.com.

L’Oreal HIP Matte and Metallic Shadow Duos

Before MAC Cosmetics came into my world there was L’Oreal HIP. At one point I owned just about all of their eye shadows. You really can’t beat their prices–especially when your local drugstore is running a Buy 1, Get 1 Free sale.

Girl yes….L’Oreal HIP’s eyeshadows are the ish. Especially for my newbies out there.

L’O HIP has recently released two more lines of eye shadows: mattes and metallics. I can dig it! This means more versatility for looks. Because I already have so many bright shadows, I decided to pick up one from each line; both are safe colors but I love them just the same.

Poppy
Matte Shadow Duo

Charged
Metallic Shadow Duo

Both eyes!

….and all L’Oreal HIP shadow duos have the trunk space at the bottom that holds a sponge tip applicator. Back in the day they used to have mirrors. Heyyyy, what happened, mayn?

I primed my eyes with this:

Yes, I LOVE L’Oreal HIP’s Cream Paint in Witty. I actually use this on top of Too Faced’s Shadow Insurance to really make my color POP.

I suggest checking out my video because I feel like the looks look A LOT better in person than they do in these photos.

I am impressed with these duos and plan on purchasing more in the near future—but not until a Buy 1, Get 1 Free sale comes along. I have a long way to go before I master the art of applying matte eye shadows but L’Oreal HIP’s seem to do good job. I didn’t get any fall-out. And the metallic shadows really are bling-tastic.

You can purchase these duos from around $8.99-$9.99 at Ulta and drugstores.

Whatcha think? Would you invest in these babies or not so much?

Beauty Bee-haviors: I can’t stand when______

Welcome to another post from the Beauty Bee-haviors series. In this series we have open discussions about any and everything in the beauty world.

There are some things that annoy me in the beauty world. But I know I’m not the only one. There are a few trends that have made me go “Uh?” And I know I am not the only one.

What beauty trend or look drives you up a wall?

Can I tell you one of mine?

Black eyeliner on the lips

I can not STAND the sight of this. Like, it literally makes me cringe. And yet….it STILL seem to be so prevalent here in Florida. Yes, believe it or not, I once wore black eyeliner on the lips in high school. I’m sure a great deal of us did but if this trend (is it even a trend?) doesn’t die out, I will be forced to walk around with baby wipes and risk getting knocked out to remove the horrid black liner around the lippies of these ladies.

There.

I said it.

You turn. Fill in the blank.

When it comes to beauty: I can’t stand when _________.

Natural Beauty: Why Castile Soap rocks my socks….

I am going to start featuring more natural product reviews on Clumps of Mascara. I mean, it only makes sense! Natural products are staples in my home and very rarely do I show them love here on the blog. That changes today!

Have I told y’all how much I love castile soap?

I buy the different fragrances and different sizes and I just LOVE them.

Please tell me you know what Castile soap is? It’s just that! Soap. And it’s all natural. I ain’t playin‘….check out the ingredients.

It looks like regular liquid soap when poured out.

Add a few drops of water and what do you get? Soapy goodness!

Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soaps has 18 uses. Okay, sooo…I haven’t found all 18 but I’m using castile soap daily!

-I wash my hair with it (Peppermint or Tea Tree)
-I clean my bathroom and kitchen with it. (Unscented)
-I wash my face with it (Lavender or Almond)
-I clean my make-up brushes with (Unscented)
-I remove stains with it (Unscented)
-I use it as a body wash (Almond or Citrus)
-I have used it as a toothpaste..but giiirl, don’t swallow it (Peppermint)

I have developed a great love affair with castile soap. This is one product that I can not leave home without when traveling.

You can find out more about castile soap here. If you are looking to incorporate more natural products in your lifestyle, castile soap is a must have. And it pretty affordable and easy to find. They are popping up at drugstores and I have known to find some at Target stores. But of course they can easily be found at natural food stores and markets like Wild Oats, Whole Foods and Trader’s Joe.

Let It Clump: Friendships

Yaaaay, This is my first Let It Clump post. We haven’t had one of these in awhile.
This series is where we stop talking about make-up to explore other areas of beauty and beyond. That’s anything! Nails, hair, fashion, jacked up love lives..anything! Any suggestions? Let me know at Tamarforclumps@gmail.com

I want to talk about FRIENDSHIPS! We all have them, we all want them and we all hate them.

I realized today that women are hard to understand! I have developed more valuable friendships via the Internet than I have in my whole life. I know its not anything wrong with my personality but I’ve had issues with friendships since grade school. Why can’t women get along? At first I though it was just my community but its a problem that we all have. What is the perfect woman? I’m still trying to figure that out. I can only be the woman that my mama raised. Here are some things she taught me…….

1.) Beautiful on the inside (Its not only the outside that matters)

2.) Loyal (If you’re not sure you where you stand you will always fall)

3.) Trustworthy (A person should be able to tell you anything and not worry about you hurting them)

4.) Love GOD (If you have faith you will always believe in something)

5.) Treat people the way you want to be treated (Its the golden rule)

Those are just a few I could go on and on! I feel that women should love and support one another. Do you know how much stronger we would be if actually took time out to help each other?

Chime in and let me know your thoughts. Are you a good friend? Do you have good friends?

Keep It Clumping,

TAMAR

Mascara Monday: Lumene Blueberry Curl mascara

Happy Monday, my darlings! I hope that those celebrating in the U.S. had a wonderful 4th of July. My Mommy came down from North Florida to visit and we had a ball!

I have received several requests to review this mascara. Some are a few months old. But it’s not because I forgot! I really couldn’t find it! A stroll down Ulta had this mascara calling my name so behold…..

Lumene Blueberry Curl mascara

Price: 5 out of 5 (I got it for $9.99 at Ulta)
Packaging (Brush Wand): 5 out of 5
Overall: 4 out of 5

What it claims: Perfectly voluminous lashes with the power of Nordic nature! A mascara which combines unique Finnish blueberry seed oil with the exceptional characteristics of an innovative plastic mascara brush. (source)

The truth:
It doesn’t smell like blueberries but woooow, it’s good!!

What I loved about it: Well for starters, the wand rocks. This may be one of the best wands that I have ever used. The bristles are just perfect. It looks like Cover Girl’s Lash Blast wand but better….the bristles are longer making separation of the lashes easy.

What I didn’t like: Shucks man….this mascara would get a 5 if only it lasted throughout the day! Boooo!

Overall: I first heard about Lumene’s Blueberry Curl mascara from Vanessa at Contests and Such. And of course my first question was, “Does it smell like blueberries?” Blackberry seed oil is used in this mascara and aside from it helping curl your lashes, it is also supposed to keep them stronger and healthier. This is definitely the kind of mascara you would want to use over time to see if they indeed become stronger and longer.

Ahhh….what I can say? Initial application is amazing. You can apply up to three coats of this mascara without any clumps. Already amazing in my book. Even the curl factor is up to par. And that says a lot since the average mascara doesn’t really “curl”.

But the real problem is that the mascara looses its “umph” throughout the day. While my lashes look long and curl-tastic now, a few moments outside in the Floridian heat and the mascara seems to just wither away. It isn’t as hard as most mascaras. But that’s just me. I would imagine ladies in other climates or with less oily skin would not have this issue.

Lashes without mascara
(did NOT curl lashes)

Lashes with 2 coats of mascara

Would I recommend it?: I do. It really does deliver the curl factor. And maybe it will hold up better on you than it did on me.

A crazed mascara reviewer,

Hi darlings!!

Meh…I’m still playing around with everything but right now I’m not 100 % sold on anything. Except the All Over Color Stick. That’s pretty groovy. As is Royal Purple nail polish!

What a stunning purple! And for only $1!

I will do a complete review on all of the other products I snagged from E.L.F.–including brushes.

Anyone a fan of E.L.F.?

I hope that you all have a fantabulous 4th of July!!!

Beauty Review: Carol’s Daughter Almond Cookie Scrub & Lotion

Hello beautiful people!

If there is one brand of products that I get the most requests for review, it is Carol’s Daughter. Please oh please forgive me for just now getting to that.

But better late than never. In the next few weeks, you will see Carol’s Daughter reviews pop up quite frequently on Clumps of Mascara. I can just feel your enthusiasm. LOL!

Check out the reviews:

Almond Cookie Sea Salt
Body Scrub

Price: 4 out of 5 ($18 from Sephora.com)
Packaging: 5 out of 5
Overall: 5 out of 5

What it claims:
“Smooth your skin with pure sea salt blended with almond, vanilla, and sandalwood for a warm, sweet scent that gets you glowing. This glorious scrub makes layering this delicious scent, pure pleasure.” (source)

The truth:
What a yummy and delicious scrub!

What I loved about it: I love that there isn’t any mineral oil or petroleum in it. I mean…this is great! Mineral oil clogs the pores and petroleum leaves that oily residue that makes for a serious slip and fall in the shower.

What I didn’t like:
I wish the packaging wasn’t so bulky. It doesn’t fit comfortably in the shower and if you don’t latch the top all the way….mess galore!

Overall: At first glance, you may get turned off by the oils sitting on top of the scrub.

But don’t! Sink your hands beyond the essential oils and you will hit the decadent scrub!

I love it. It really really realllly exfoliates well for me. I’m not sure if I would recommend this for sensitive skin gals as it was a bit abrasive but it worked beautifully for me. I love that the smell isn’t too overpowering. It leaves your skin silky smooth with just a faint smell of almond cookies. I have never really been a fan of smelling like food but even I can deal with this! I do think the price is a little hefty but scrubs last for a while so it’s a good investment. And the packaging makes for great storing after the scrub is done!

Next up….

Almond Cookie Body Butter

Price: 3 out of 5 ($28 from Sephora.com-online only!)
Packaging: 5 out of 5
Overall: 3 out of 5

What it claims:
“A rich, luxurious moisturizer for very dry skin, with a delicious scent of sweet almonds, vanilla, and sandalwood. ” (source)

The truth:
Not a bad follow-up to the Almond Cookie scrub! If you can take the super strong smell.

What I loved about it: It isn’t overly greasy! A great deal of body butters are. It’s like, “Yeah….I know I have dry skin but that doesn’t mean I want to be all oil slick-ish.” I love that I don’t get that feeling.

What I didn’t like:
Ohmigoodness….it is strong! I mean, it smells good but the smell is just TOO strong.

Overall: What’s not to love about a beautiful little body butter that has an almond sitting on top of it?

I mean, how cute is that? I almost wanted to eat it. I know, “Eww Brit,” is right. LOL! The body butter feels excellent on the skin. I mean, luscious!

With it being summertime, I probably wouldn’t wear it during the day but it is perfect for pampering at night. And it is exceptional on those dry areas…you know, elbows, knees and feet. It’s great! But as mentioned, the smell is just a little too much for me.

I think both the scrub and body butter are pretty good but if you had to get just one, I would go with the scrub. It is truly an “experience”.

I wish Carol’s Daughter products weren’t so expensive. A great deal of us love the idea of all-natural skincare products but don’t like the pretty penny behind them.

Have you tried any of these products? Snag ‘em now at Sephora!

Oh….I did a quick video 4-minute video review too. Please disregard when I say “Apple”. LOL, so random!
