Clumps in the Streets: Garnier Fructis Celebrity Styling Suite

I love Miami, y’all. Aside from it being my birthplace…there really is no other city like it. Not to mention it’s the only city in Florida where cool happ’ns are going on regularly. Central and North Florida are pretty dead when it comes to beauty events so I usually have to head 3.5 hours South if I want to get into something fun.

I was invited to Garnier Fructis Celebrity Styling Suite at the world-famous Eden Roc Hotel. I’ve stayed at the Eden Roc before (I tweeted this pic) and it is hands down one of the most beautiful hotels I’ve ever stayed in before. I grabbed the Clumps intern Bri and we headed down to the Garnier Bungalow.

Hit the jump to see more!

This styling suite was only open to VIP and celebrities in town for Superbowl 44. Nope..I didn’t run into any celebs this time around. I thought it would be cool if Bri got her hair done while I chit chatted with the stylists. This was a GREAT opportunity for her as she is taking a cosmetology class along with her high school studies.

I’m not sure what was used on Bri’s hair but it came out beautifully! After her styling, we roamed about the hotel.

Bri a posin’…

She couldn’t stop touching her hair. Gorg!

My nails got a lot of questions. Most people thought they were Minx-ed.

But nope…another production of my konad nail art stamping kit!

I jetted out of the city before Superbowl so while it was a quick trip, Bri and I had a ball. Any Garnier fans out there?

Lisa Bonet’s Style: Bummy or Bohem?

I was always a fan of Lisa Bonet’s character on The Cosby Show. She was free-spirited, carefree, a dreamer and although she took a lot of unconventional routes she reminded me of….myself.

Seriously! Ask my sisters. Whenever we play “Which sister are you from The Cosby Show?” they would all say I’m like Denise. I’m the one that went to college and cut off all of my hair. I moved to the other side of the country and dabbled in veganism, vegetarianism and everything in between.

Yeah yeah….so I’m the “eccentric” one in my family. And proud!

Some photos of Ms. Lisa Bonet popped up in the blogosphere and it appears that some of the Young, Black & Fabulous readers thinks she looks like a bum. What say you? Hit the jump to view the photos.

Am I missing something? I think she looks fine! I know, I know…you’re expecting me to question why she isn’t wearing any lip gloss or blush, right? Wrong! While I always like to look my best when I go out (even if to the grocery store), being comfortable means the world to me. Ms. Bonet doesn’t feel the need to wear 4-inch heels or skirt just to run some errands. And for that, I love her! Her skin is flawless and her freeform locs are just beautiful. Not to mention she is a 42-year old Mom with a toddler. She doesn’t have a drop of make-up and still looks youthful.

And she shops at Erewhon? I used to love shopping at that store when I lived in Los Angeles. But, um yeah..I don’t see anything wrong with her look at all.

What say you?

Is she taking the bum look too far or is this just classic comfortable bohem?

Mascara Monday: Maybelline XXL Pro Volume

Good ole’ Maybelline has graced us with not one, not two but FOUR new mascaras under the XXL Pro by EyeStudio line. Now if you know anything about Maybelline mascaras, you may remember the original XXL mascaras. I’ve reviewed the Volume and Lengthening before. Don’t quote me on this, but I think that the XXL Pro will replace the XXL mascaras. Aside from the colors, the packaging doesn’t change so it makes me wonder if the formulations have.
Of course the only way to figure this out is by reviewing them.

First up…volume!!

Maybelline XXL Pro Volume

Hit the jump to see if it rocks or rolls…into the garbage can, that is. 😉

Price: 5 out of 5
Packaging (Brush Wand): 3 out of 5
Overall: 3.5 out of 5

What it claims:
Per the packaging…

The truth: It’s aight…I don’t know about this microfiber thing. I didn’t experience any of that.

What I loved about it: Um, I couldn’t find anything to REALLY love about it.

What I didn’t like: I don’t feel like I got enough volume. Boo!

Overall: I always have high expectations for mascaras that claim to volumize. These mascaras excite me more than lengthening and curling mascaras. Volume=bigger and lusher lashes and that’s just so me! Maybelline XXL Pro Volume, like all of the XXL Pro mascaras, are dual ended.

You’ve got a primer on one end and the mascara on the other.

La Primer…

La Mascara…

I’m not the biggest fan of these wands. I mean…they aren’t bad but I wish they the bristles were a little further out. Now here’s the thing about the primer…although it goes on white, it disappears after applying the mascara.

I know, what you’re thinking, “What’s the point of this mascara? And does it really make a difference?” Truth is…it does! Watch this…

Lashes without mascara
(did not curl lashes)

Lashes with 3 coats of mascara

First the primer…

…and then viola!

Left eye: mascara WITH primer

Right eye: just mascara

Quite the difference, uh? So while it seems like an unnecessary step, the primer actually works. But I’m not all that impressed with the volume I got. Because I didn’t get much. Lengthening was good but come on…where’s the cream filling?
I also found this baby to be a tad bit flaky. Could it be because my lashes were coated too much? Maybe.
Ah well…I hope the other XXL Pro mascaras don’t let me down as much

Would I recommend it?: It’s not a must have. Snag it if it’s on sale.

Has anyone tried this mascara yet? Whatcha think?

FOTD Friday: Coppering eyes and red like fiyah lips

Happy Friday, darlings! Gosh, I still can’t believe that it’s February already. I love the month of February. You’ve got Black History Month, Valentine’s Day and for us Floridians the weather starts hitting around the 80’s and 90’s and it’s practically summer time. Someone out there just shoveled snow this morning and is giving me “the look” but don’t hate me. Visit Florida! LOL!
Anywhoovers…so despite the fact that I’m Valentine-less this year (*pops collar* So, I still really like Valentine-y stuffs. I love the pink and red and it’s just so cheesy and over the top and right up my alley. My original FOTD was going to be something on the lines of…

Click the jump to see what the final look looked like!

But I’ve done that before. Remember when I used that NARS Caravaggio duo? Loved it! But for some reason I was feeling like sportin’ a red lip. But when doing so I wanted to do a pretty soft eye.

So I pulled out MAC’s Coppering eyeshadow. Man, I forgot how much I loved that color. It’s just so warm yet un-boring. See!
Go ‘head, Coppering! You rock and you know it. And then I had fun with a bright red lip.

What I used…

MAC Studio Finish concealer in NW45
MAC Sweet As Cocoa blush

Too Faced Shadow Insurance
L’Oreal HIP cream paint in Witty (lid)
MAC Coppering eyeshadow (outer-V)
MAC Embark and Handwritten (crease

NARS Edie eyeshadow (between crease and brow)
Urban Decay 24/7 liner in Zero
Stila’s waterproof liquid eye liner
L’Oreal Voluminous <—such a staple!

Milani Bonfire lip pencil
MAC Port Red lipstick
MAC 3D Lipglass in Wondershine <—throwback!

…and this one is for my girl Afrobella who LOVES bananas!

Actually, I’m kidding. She hates everything banana-related except banana bread and I love everything banana-related except banana bread. HA!

So what do you think? About bananas, I mean? Love ’em? Hate ’em?

I am going to have a pretty busy weekend. I am headed to Miami to crash a Superbowl celebrity styling lounge (no…seriously. I’ll tweet pics!) and then I am throwing my friend a baby shower in Tampa on Saturday. And let’s hope that I manage to finish up my 5K training for the week.

Okay, my loves….see y’all next week!

Have a fabulous weekend,

50 million pound challenge: Fat and Fit??

Look at that….I’ve been doing a whole bunch of writing about healthy foods and smoothies but I have yet to talk about fitness! And that’s crazy considering fitness takes up a great chunk of my life.

The title of this post was inspired by A Black Girl’s Guide To Weight Loss. It was there where I saw this video.

So yeah…the Wii Fit STILL says I’m overweight. My BMI is 30.1. I work out 5-7 times a week and have a diet that is 50% raw vegetables. Could it be that I am too fat and fit? Er uh…where do I begin with this?

Working out is important. And it’s one of those things that I always knew but ignored. For most of my life, I always made excuses for why I didn’t want to work out.

Hit the jump to continue…

“I don’t have time.”

I don’t want to mess up my hair.”

“I hate sweating.”

“But I fell down on my knee when I was 6 and it still hurts.”

All excuses for why I didn’t want to work-out. I was never an athlete. I was the typical kid in that I spent a lot of time outside running around, swimming and riding my bike but I was never on any team. In 10th grade I tried out for the volleyball team and gave up the 2nd day of conditioning. What a punk, right?

But now you can’t stop me from working out. And I’m tellin’ y’all…if I can do it, anyone can. Many ask what my motivation was. What finally got me to be a regular in the gym. It’s very simple.

High blood pressure.

While I don’t have the latter, people in my family do. My blood pressure was in the 140’s when I was only 22 years old. The thought of being put on medication scared the devil out of me. I knew changes had to be made. Changes that I probably wouldn’t like. Here’s how to do it…

1. Set a goal for yourself. Be it a dress size, weight or a challenge. Find  a realistic goal to look forward to. It was always easier for me to work-out when I knew I was working towards something I really wanted. I continue to do this every time I work-out too. If I am running outside, I always look at a marker (be it a tree or sign) and I push myself until I get to that marker. It is never easy but congratulating yourself on that little accomplishment does wonders for your self-esteem.

2. Have a support system. This is SO important. And they don’t always have to be people in your immediate life. Join social networking sites for those in the same position as you. Follow your favorite nutritionists or work-out folx on Twitter. Having the support of others really kept me going on those days when I felt like giving up.

3. Realize that it takes time. If you aren’t used to working out, don’t expect for it to be easy the first two weeks that you do it. It takes time for your body to adjust. And it is really more mental than anything. I FORCED myself to work-out every day for a month. After that month, going 4-5 times a week seemed easier.

4. Do not let yourself make excuses. I know, easier said than done, right? Personally, I feel awful on days that I don’t work out when I know I’m supposed to. Even if I can’t make it to the gym, I try to jump on the Wii Fit, jump rope, do some yoga or at least eat lighter that day. If being active is what you seek, make time for it. We make time for everything else, right? If you are a TV watcher, do lunges and squats during commercials. If you work at a desk all day, do mini-ab work-outs. The more conscious you are of working out, the fewer excuses you will make.

5. Tell yourself you can do it! This sound super lame but it really works. Positive thinking goes a long way. Especially when being conscious about health and fitness. Stop obsessing over what you used to look like. Stop fantasizing over having a body like your favorite celebrity. You are already beautiful. Tell yourself this and keeping reminding yourself that being healthy is way more important than how you look on the outside.

I’m no professional. I just want to be healthy. Not skinny. But healthy. Some confuse my active working out for wanting to be small. I have long accepted the fact that I will not be a size 2. Or 6. It is not in my genetic make-up. Where I’m from women are “thick”. Thick is fine but healthy is better.

I challenge you all to work-out to the best of your ability.  Work it out! If you have any tips or ideas, please share them!

Celeb Spotlight: Keri Hilson’s Grammy look

Soooo chicas, did anyone catch the Grammy’s? Or was I the only loser that didn’t? I know…I’m so bad. I actually forgot to watch it. It wasn’t a terrible lost though because the next morning I woke up to a ton of Grammy related blog posts in my Google Reader.

One of my favorite looks of the night was by Ms. Keri Hilson….

Now don’t ask me what song she sings. Y’all know I live under a pop culture rock and don’t know these things. But the lady is killing it with the dark purple eye. Keri’s make-up was done by make-up artist Ashunta Sheriff (whose hair I am obsessed with) and she used one of CoverGirl’s Smoky Shadow Blast Shadow Stick in Purple Plum as her base. You’ve seen them in your drugstores, right? They look like this…

I will definitely be trying these babies out with the quickness. I loved how Ashunta kept the purple right on the lid without blending too much. It really makes the look pop out more. Oh…and I would be remiss if I didn’t show Ms. Hilson’s mermaid-style dress.

*faints* Goodbye. I know of nothing else to say. There is just an overbundance of fabulousness in this post.

Okay, but seriously….what do you think about her look? Has anyone tried those CoverGirl Shadow Sticks? I’m thinking of posting some more of my favorite Grammy looks. Hmm…

Stay tuned!
