Acne Sucks: Pimple Poppin’

It wouldn’t be an efficient “acne” series if I didn’t talk about poppin’ pimples.

That’s right, I said it. I know dermatologists and estheticians would tell you NOT to pop pimples but I do it anyway.

I’m such a rebel, right?

But don’t call me stupid just yet. There are methods to pimple popping. And they don’t work for ALL pimples. Shoot…they don’t even work for all skin types. Having said that, don’t let this post motivate you to go around popping pimples aimlessly. I am simply showing you what I do. It has been successful for me for quite some time but I don’t want any of y’all sending me hate mail if you end up with scars because my method didn’t work for you.

Meet the pimples’ best friend….

This is a pimple extractor. And while it may look harmless, it really is a dangerous tool. If not used carefully, this extractor can cause scarring. It is really only supposed to be used by professionals. But I saw it at Sephora one fateful evening and decided to give it a whirl.

I’ll tell you one thing, this baby really should come with instructions because the first few times I used it, I scarred my skin. It was bad. It took months for those dark spots to go away.

But desperation will make you rather persistent. The next time around, I decided to do my research. I learned about the type of pimples I had. That gave me a better idea of how to treat them. This article gave me amazing insight. I learned that I had a type of pimple called papules. Despite ALWAYS having so many on my cheeks, they aren’t so difficult to get rid of since they have a whitehead.

And so the extractor came in handy.

The extractor gets out all of the nasty stuff out and I am left with the aftermath. Differin gel (prescribed by my dermatologist) overnight diminishes that and I am rarely left with a scar.

The extractor has changed my skin, y’all. I also use Q-Tips. They are better than the extractor because scarring almost never happens. By taking 2 Q-Tips, I’ll squeeze a pimple and watch the nasty nasty ooze on out.

Sounds gross, I know. But it works!

Remember my skin a few months ago? Inflammation was out of control. Every day I was popping a new pimple, healing a former pimple and trying to get rid of the scarring.

Now it’s lookin’ like this….

I’m rocking a little concealer and bronzer here but the pimples are under control. I still have some scarring but with the Origins Skin Tone Corrector I’m using (review coming soon!), I am confident that those will be disappearing soon.

Before popping pimples, I am always sure to steam my face (thanks Kelly!) and thoroughly wash my hands. I was hesitant about even doing a post on pimple poppin’ because I know that a lot of people are against it. But tell that to a person who has a dozen of them just chillin’ on their face. I think it’s best to inform yourself about how to take care of your skin and then do what you can to alleviate it. My dermatologist is cool and all but I don’t want to HAVE to go.

….not to mention, a lot of people don’t have health insurance to even be able to visit a derm so I think it’s best to learn how to take care of our skin the best way that we can.

With that said, if you are going to pop pimples, be careful. Be careful. Be careful.

If you have any tips on how to pop them, please share!

Amor de Lacquer: Zoya’s Dare Collection, Fall 2009

Welcome to another post of Amor de Lacquer….the series all about nail polish and nail care! Send me your requests, suggestions and ideas to

Soooo, remember when I reviewed Zoya’s Truth Collection? I’m a little late but here’s the Dare collection. And between you and me…I LOVE this one a lot more than Truth. What can I say? I am definitely a Dare kinda girl. Holla!

Ciara is another berry. We’ve seen a lot of these Zoya. They do them beautifully. Ciara is no exception. Loves it!

Vanessa is described as a red blue cream. I totally love it. The application was flawless and it makes a wonderful pedicure color.

Pinta is a purple cream so you know that I’m in love, right? This purple makes my heart flutter. Isn’t it gorgeous?

Demi is one of those colors that you look at and just go “Eh”. But then when you apply it…you love it! This purple mauve is super unique. I don’t think I’ve seen anything like it.

Envy is such a fabulous army green. And it’s a green cream. What’s not to love?

Iziba is like…wow. I LOVE it! While it is super vampy, it looks blue….not black.

….it rocks when it comes to konading too!

Well, what can I say? This is one of my favorite Zoya collections ever. I love every single one. Definitely an amazing fall color.

I used two coats for each and didn’t have any application problems.

Buy these and more for $7/bottle at

So who has ’em? See any you like?

Mascara Monday: Victoria Secret’s Beauty Rush mascara

Well, look at that! Who would have thought that I would be reviewing a mascara from Vicky S? Totally unexpcted, right? The next time you’re strolling your local VS, check out their beauty section. It’s not so bad! I received a gift set for Christmas one year and was quite surprised!

Let’s see how this mascara holds up…

Victoria Secret’s
Beauty Rush mascara

Price: 5 out of 5 (2 for $12 or 5 for $20)

Packaging (Brush Wand): 3 out of 5
Overall: 3 out of 5

What it claims: FA lush stroke of lash-enhancing color. Pigment-rich formula defines lashes in wearable color for look-at-me eyes. (source)

The truth:
They are just okay. It’s really the packaging that has me doing cartwheels. How cute is that?

What I loved about it: The purple is REALLY purple. Loves that!!

What I didn’t like: The black mascara fell way too flat. And neither provided much volume.

Overall: This wasn’t a highly requested mascara or anything but I thought they would be pretty cool to add to the Mascara Bin. Yana from My Own Judge snagged the black (Blacktastic) one for me and of course after seeing the purple (Violight), I had to run out and get that one.

Let’s take a look at the wands:

Pretty average, uh? Not BAD but they look a little cheap-y. I don’t have many problems with wands like this but they are soooo….2001, ya know? And they aren’t the best with separation. They kind of suck at it, actually.

Sooo….I don’t know. I had different experiences with both mascaras. Violight turned out to be pretty decent. I didn’t get much volume but I was pretty satisfied with the lengthening aspect. It wasn’t AMAZING. But it was good. That the purple really is purple on black lashes. Now that surprised me!

Blacktastic, on the other hand, was just….phooey. It was total disappointment. It weighed down my lashes and didn’t provide any kind of volume. Interesting considering these babies come from the same color. Why is Violight SO much better?

Both were a tad bit smudge-y but I didn’t experience any flaking throughout the day But I will tell you one thing about these mascaras–they are build-able! I applied a good 4 coats one application and it refused to clump. But applying coat after coat didn’t do much…I was still volume-less. Boo! On to the photos!

Lashes without mascara
(curled lashes)

Lashes with 2 coats of mascara

Would I recommend it?: I suppose they are okay ladies who aren’t looking for much when it comes to mascara application. It is perfect for my 16-year old cousin who just wants a little POP.

Anyone try any of these mascaras? What do you think?

A crazed mascara reviewer,

FOTD Friday: Purples Eyes and Purple Nails

Purples have struck me again! Can you believe this? It’s out of control really. I think my last few FOTDs have been surrounded around purples. There is clearly something in the water. I’m hoping that I can break this streak and dabble into more colors. But for right now purples are rocking my world.

Remember when I showed ya’ll the fabulousness that is Stila’s Barbie Smudge pot in Purple Pumps? I decided to use it as a base. I find that it’s a little tricky because it is super glittery. It takes quite a bit of packing on.

But I managed to crank out a little somethin’-somethin’…

MAC Studio Finish concealer in NW45

MAC blush in Sweet As Cocoa

Too Faced Shadow Insurance
MAC Nocturnelle e/s

MAC Vibrant Grape e/s
MAC fluidline in Blacktrack
NARS Albatross highlighter
Urban Decay 24/7 liner in Zero
Lancome Oscillation mascara
Inglot lipstick in #204

I am lovin’ that lipstick!

….and then there are the nails. I used Essie’s Matte About You over Diamond Cosmetics’ Crushed Velvet. Whoa!

And I’ve fallen in love with Color Club’s Wild at Heart.

Seriously the best polish I have seen in my entire life. But I say that about everything right?

Purples are amazing. On the eyes, on the nails, on the lips, in the hair….I’ve done it all. And I hearby retire purples for at least a good 2 months!

Okay….NOW I’m done. :)

Happy weekend, y’all!

Stay beautiful,

Iman Cosmetics overload!

If there is one brand of cosmetics Clumps readers demand more coverage of, it’s Iman Cosmetics. I dabbled in some of the foundations here but this is my first time playing around with the shadows and blushes.

Dude, what took me so long?

Thanks to the incredible prices of (definitely check ’em out…shadows are only $3.99 and blushes are $4.99!!) I was able to do a major haul with minor spending.

Check out the shadows….

Chili, Twigs, Mahogany

Can you believe I DON’T own colors like these? I guess because I always assumed that colors like this were a little too “safe” and predictable on brown skin. Don’t know what I was thinking because I find that all three of these babies are uniquely versatile.

And then there are the blushes…

Fressia, Website, Bark

You fainted, didn’t you? I know I did when I first saw them. I can’t wait to swatch them and incorporate them in looks to share with y’all.

I was really anxious to see how Chili eyeshadow would look on the lid. It is a matte so I packed it on and used Mahogany in my crease for a quick “off to work” look.

Not bad at ‘tal, uh? Stay tuned for a complete review of all of the shadows and blushes. In the meantime, head on over to Beauty Ticket and get your Iman Cosmetics haul on!

Amor de Lacquer: Halloween nail art

Welcome to another post of Amor de Lacquer….the series all about nail polish and nail care! Send me your requests, suggestions and ideas to

It’s Halloween time, y’all! I don’t really get into the whole dressing up thing–although this year my girls want to go to Miami. In which case if I DO go, I’m dressin’ up as a cop. Or a “sexy cop” since most Halloween costumes for ladies are nothing more than baring more. HA!

I got a little inspired and wanted to play around with some new konad plates I got.

I finally ordered from I HIGHLY recommend them. Kathleen is a pleasure to work with and shipping was fast. Gotta love it.

The plates I got…

I knew that I wanted to use China Glaze’s new Fortune Teller.

How amaziiiing is this color? It is black with orange glittery chunks. It looks SO good on its own. It really is a fabulous Halloween color. I got mine from Sally’s Beauty Supply.

I used a design on Konad plate m57.

I fudged up the pointer. My konad-ing skills STILL need some work.

Then I took China Glaze’s Style Wars and used a design on plate m61.

Can you believe I don’t have a black polish? 100-somethin’ polishes and not one is black? The horror! I ended up using Man Glaze’s The Death Tar. See my review here. A black polish would really make the art POP. So I guess I need to buy one.

I am really loving konad!

I was trying to do a fancy nail + face photo and look what happened?

I so messed up. HA!! I’m a mess, y’all.

Check out my konad tutorial here. Anyone doin’ any funky nail art for Halloween?

Or even dressing up for Halloween?

Tell meez!
