Merry Christmas 2013

DSC_2916

Hey y’all! Sometimes I feel so guilty for not being the active blogger that I once was. Life has changed (mainly for the better) and I’m finding more purpose in enjoying life’s moments than blogging about them. But that doesn’t mean that I’ve lost my passion for blogging. Even after blogging for 6 years, I am still trying to find my voice in this industry.

But some days (like today), I’d rather soak up my baby’s awesomeness than write about cosmetics. I’m enjoying the holidays and hope to do some restructuring in the new year. Thanks for standing by me through my many absences.

Much love to the Clumps of Mascara family and for those that celebrate it…Merry Christmas!

I Hosted A Care Cards Party!

A few weeks ago, (Grand)Mama Clumps and my sister helped me with a very awesome project. As a Johnson Baby ambassador, I not only get the opportunity to introduce some of their newest and innovative products, but I also get to be a part of showing love to mamas by having a Care Cards party.

DSC_1881

A ginormous box of products landed on my doorstop and the task was simple. Organize said boxes and write sweet letters to expectant mothers. As a new Mom, I was all over this project because I know what it’s like to be a pregnant mama and be absolutely clueless. Sometimes the smallest bit of confirmation can make such a huge difference. And pregnant mamas need this kind of support.

Plus, any day that I get the chance to play with markers is a GOOD day.

So, it was quite the honor to be able to write little words of encouragement to so many mamas. We did this over Thanksgiving and chit-chatted away. It took a few hours to decorate the cards, write the sweet words and pack everything up.

There are so many charities that I know would love passing these out to expectant mamas but I thought that the Beta House here in Orlando would be a great fit. The Beta House shows support to teenage mothers through residential programs, educational opportunities and just making sure that younger parents have as much support as possible. Charities like the Beta House work so hard to provide so much and I know that they are thankful for anything that they can get.

Esposo Reviews: A watch made out of…wood?

JORD watch on wrist

If you ask the wife, she’ll tell you I have an obsession with watches. If you ask me, I’ll simply inform you that I have a distinct appreciation for quality time pieces that are affordable (usually), functional (always), and just look damn good. So when she asked me if I was interested in reviewing a wooden watch brand, I jumped at it.

You see, in the past year or two wooden watches have become a “thing”. Whether it’s a trendy thing, an “eco-friendly-let’s-save-the-world” thing, or a “let’s be more hip than the hipsters” thing I couldn’t tell you, but it’s definitely a “thing”. I tend to lean more towards the chunky, big faced stainless steel styles, but after discovering there are more than a few brands venturing into the wood market I’ve become curious.

JORD watches

To begin with, the folks at Jord get kudos for making the packaging so appealing. Being a fashion focused brand rather than an eco-friendly brand (according to their website), this should be expected, but in researching their competition I’ve found not everyone remembers that the packaging is part of the experience.

JORD packaging

In addition to the nicely detailed box you also get a monogrammed pillow for the watch to wrap around. It was a nice surprise and a first for me, as I can’t recall having seen that in other luxury watch brands. Another point in Jord’s favor.

The model we were sent, the Sully, is a mid-sized watch made from cherry & maple wood with a 41mm case/bezel, 3 hand Citizen Miyota movement, “scratch proof” glass and a single action locking clasp. It looks just as good in person as on the Jord website and is very comfortable on the wrist (no splinters!). The design of the bezel and links in the bracelet are reminiscent of many stainless steel watches on the market, so the look will be familiar to many, but having it done up in these classy wooden tones does add something different to the experience. Being made out of wood, the watch is also extremely light weight, and I found myself forgetting I had it on. That could be a good or a bad thing depending on your personal taste.

Jord

I was really impressed with how smooth and crisp the details of the watch are, as I had some doubts about how well such a product could be executed. Sizing the watch wasn’t difficult at all (I own a set of watch tools), but I was surprised that I only had to removed one link to fit the watch to my wrist. My wrist is somewhere between 7 to 7 1/2 inches in circumference and I usually have to remove 4-6 links to fit my wrist with other brands. This may leave customers with bigger wrists needing to order parts. The articulation of the band is pretty good, however there were a few links whose movement was a little stiff, but unless you’re a watch snob like me, this probably won’t matter to you.

This is a beautiful piece and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it, but I think Jord does need to be a little more focused on their quality control. Upon close examination, there was speck of paint or fragment of wood on the inside of the watch glass.

JORD case

It’s not very noticeable, but it might make some folks nervous about the inner workings of the watch. Was it assembled in a clean environment? Is there going to be a bunch of saw dust or wood chips gumming up the gears? These are questions that hard core watch buyers may ask.

Another mark against them was the fact that there were a couple of faint scratches on the clasp of the watch.

JORD clasp

I noticed these as soon as I removed the watch from the packaging and had to wonder how this happened even though the clasp was wrapped in a protective layer of plastic?

With an asking price of $139, the Sully is not the most expensive of Jord’s models or wood watches in general, but the level of craftsmanship displayed is stunning and should be a winner with both flower children and the fashion forward.

The Sweetest Blushes ever…by Too Faced

Too Faced's Sweethearts blush

So a few weeks ago Too Faced put out some hints about their Haute Chocolate collection and the beauty blogosphere went crazy. Especially over their Chocolate Bar Eyeshadow Palette. Granted I need more palettes like I need more nail polish (which means I REALLLLY need) but honey, this palette gives me life. I don’t have my hands on it yet but I like to be a big tease so when these landed in my mailbox, I couldn’t help but share ‘em with y’all.

Too Faced Sweethearts blush

These Sweethearts Perfect Flush Blushes are the newest shades of the Flush Blush line. And they’re fantastic.

Too Faced Something About Berry

But of course, I would say that. That’s because I love blushes. I mean, LOVE. And the fact that these blushes are housed in cardboard-y heart containers, well…that’s just too cute. Remember when I first featured one here?

Something About Berry

Something About Berry is a deep fuchsia that places the perfect amount of pink on my cheeks. This is my favorite of the two because I find that it’s not only work appropriate but does well for date nights too. Not that Esposo and I regularly go on date nights but I digress.

Sweet and unassuming, huh?

Too Faced Peach Beach

Peach Beach, as it sounds, is more of a bronze-y blush and yeah, I know we’re not technically in Spring 2014, but hey…who says you can’t rock glow-y skin year round. Yes, girl. Whoever said that you can’t is lyin’ to you.

Both are fitting and sweet additions to the Sweethearts Perfect Flush Blush lineup. They each run for $30 and you can scoop ‘em up at TooFaced.com.

Mascara Monday: Hard Candy Ginormous Lash mascara

It’s been a minute since I’ve reviewed a mascara from Hard Candy. I received this for review quite some time ago and I’ve been testing this baby for a good 2 weeks. Which, is now, starting to become my standard. I used to review a mascara for at least a week, but I don’t know…a lot of good (and bad) can happen in 2 weeks.

Hard Candy Ginormous Lash mascara wand

Such was the case with this mascara.

Hard Candy Ginormous Lash mascara

Price: $6 from Walmart and Walmart.com
Packaging (brush wand): 3 out of 5
Overall: 3 out of 5

What It Claims: “Ginormous Volumizing Mascara infused with Growth Serum helps promote long-term lash growth, strength and vitality. Apply and watch as Ginormous plus Growth Serum stimulates your lashes to appear longer, fuller and stronger with regular use.” (source)

The Truth: Meh.

What I Loved About It: The wand works beautifully at really bringing out the lashes.

What I Didn’t Like: It didn’t volumize my lashes enough.

Overall: Well. I like Hard Candy. I really do. I think some of their polishes are freaking awesome and when it comes to budget makeup, you can always depend on them to step outside of the box and give us bold color and whatnot. They’ve got a slew of mascaras to pick from and any brand that gives me several mascaras to buy is alright with me.

This mascara not only promises to give crazy voluminous lashes but it is also supposed to help grow the lashes. I only reviewed this for 2 weeks, so I can’t speak much to that claim but the volumizing. It’s just okay. Really, it’s nothing monumental. And neither is the wand.

Mascara wand

I’m starting to prefer the plush brush wands over the plastic ones because you can really build up volume with them. So yes, for helping plump those lashes up, this wand works great. The formula is just so so. It wasn’t overly thick or thin but I felt like I had to apply a ton of coats for it to really show a lil’ somethin’. And said somethin’ was very minimal. Even after 3 coats, I didn’t feel as if I had much on my lashes. Some mascara lovers love the lightweight mascara feel and I do too, but only if my lashes look coated! And they just didn’t with this mascara. Boo. And double boo. But on a good note, I didn’t experience any smudging or flaking. Which is always a good thing. It’s an average mascara at best.

Do I recommend it?: I wouldn’t break my neck running to Walmart to get it but if you’re a lightweight mascara lover, you may appreciate it. However, if you’re like me and love those drag queen lashes, you may find this one a wee bit disappointing.umph!

Are you a fan of mascara with growth serums dumped in them?
